Abstract:A general mechanistic model, involving an ensemble of rate equations, is developed to predict the formation of fly ash during pulverized coal combustion. The most important pathways, including physicochemical mineral vaporizations, dynamic mineral collisions, and statistical mineral fragmentations, are addressed in the model. The coalescence between exposed minerals on the receding char surface is simulated by a three-dimensional hard sphere model, while the coagulation between ash aerosols of all sizes in the flue gas is done by a population balance model. Besides, the fragmentation of both liberated included minerals and isolated excluded minerals is assumed to follow a stochastic Poisson distribution. Numerical results fit well with the fine particulate matter (PM10) data measured by the electrical low pressure impactor and the bulk ash (PM10+) data measured by the Malvern particle sizer in our 25 kW one-dimensional furnace experiments. The model reproduces several features of the experimental data for coals in different ranks, including the shape of particle size distributions (PSDs) and the yield of fine particles (PM0.26, PM1, and PM2.5). For instance, it indicates that the fly ash from Zhundong coal in fractions of PM0.4, PM0.4-2.5, PM2.5-33.2, and PM33.2+ are mainly contributed by mineral precursors, mineral fragmentations, included minerals, and excluded minerals, respectively. With the validated model, the effects of particle coagulation, coal PSD, and ambient conditions on the fly ash formation are intensively examined.

Abstract:In order to understand the effect of blended coal combustion on the emission of fly ash especially fine particles,combustion test was done for three bituminous coals and their blends in a drop tube furnace.Collected fly ash particles size distributions were measured by particle sizer MS2000.The computed and measured values of average volume size and the proportion of fine particulate matter(PM_(10),PM_(2.5)) were compared.The results indicat that reasonable combustion of blended coal can increase fly ash particle size and reduce fine particulate matter(PM_(10),PM_(2.5)) release;the particle size distributions of the blended coals are influenced by constituting individual coals,ash content and ash composition.

Abstract:Oxy-fuel combustion is one of the most promising technologies to isolate efficiently and economically CO2 emissions in coal combustion for the ready carbon sequestration. The high proportions of both H2O and CO2 in the furnace have complex impacts on flame characteristics (ignition, burnout, and heat transfer), pollutant emissions (NOx, SOx, and particulate matter), and operational concerns (ash deposition, fouling/slagging). In contrast to the existing literature, this review focuses on fundamental studies on both diagnostics and modelling aspects of bench- or lab-scale oxy-fuel combustion and, particularly, gives attention to the correlations among combustion characteristics, pollutant formation, and operational ash concerns. First, the influences of temperature and species concentrations (e.g., O2, H2O) on coal ignition, volatile combustion and char burning processes, for air- and oxy-firing, are comparatively evaluated and modelled, on the basis of data from optically-accessible set-ups including flat-flame burner, drop-tube furnace, and down-fired furnace. Then, the correlations of combustion-generated particulate/NOx emissions with changes of combustion characteristics in both air and oxy-fuel firing modes are summarized. Additionally, ash deposition propensity, as well as its relation to the formation of fine particulates (i.e. PM0.2, PM1 and PM10), for both modes are overviewed. Finally, future research topics are discussed. Fundamental oxy-fuel combustion research may provide an ideal alternative for validating CFD simulations toward industrial applications.

Abstract:The properties of fuel coal are important factors affecting the unburned carbon content in fly ash of boilers.Eight typical coal sorts used for electric power generation have been selected,and test of thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) being carried out,and trial combustion in one boiler of supercritical 600 MW unit being conducted,the relationship between characteristic parameters of TGA and unburned carbon content in fly ash being obtained by using the correlation analysis and the regression analysis.Trial combustion and TGA show that the changing tendency of unburned carbon content in fly ash of new coal sort burned in the boiler can be premarily judged through TGA test and using the regression model.

Abstract:In this paper, the correlations between coal/char fragmentation and fly ash formation during pulverized coal combustion are investigated. We observed an explosion-like fragmentation of Zhundong coal in the early devolatilization stage by means of high-speed photography in the Hencken flat-flame burner. While high ash-fusion (HAF) bituminous and coal-derived char samples only undergo gentle perimeter fragmentation in the char burning stage. Simultaneously, combustion experiments of two kinds of coals were conducted in a 25 kW down-fired combustor. The particle size distributions (PSDs) of both fine particulates (PM1-10) and bulk fly ash (PM10+) were measured by Electrical Low Pressure Impactor (ELPI) and Malvern Mastersizer 2000, respectively. The results show that the mass PSD of residual fly ash (PM1+) from Zhundong coal exhibits a bi-modal shape with two peaks located at 14 mu m and 102 mu m, whereas that from HAF coal only possesses a single peak at 74 mu m. A hybrid model accounting for multiple-route ash formation processes is developed to predict the PSD of fly ash during coal combustion. By incorporating coal/char fragmentation sub-models, the simulation can quantitatively reproduce the measured PM1+ PSDs for different kinds of coals. The sensitivity analysis further reveals that the bi-modal mass distribution of PK1+ intrinsically results from the coal fragmentation during devolatilization. (C) 2018 The Combustion Institute. Abstract:Due to the current qualitative method of the unburned carbon in fly ash for tangentially pulverized coal-fired boiler, the factor analysis was applied creatively to estimate quantitatively every influence on the unburned carbon in fly ash, considering the actual operations of 300MWe boiler. This study established the factor model to analysis the influences of unburned carbon in fly ash, and listed their weights in numerical form. The results of this study suggested the sequence of these influences is the boiler loading (coal-consumption), the angle of the tilting burner, the primary air pressure, the hot-primary air temperature, furnace air total volume and the hot-secondary air temperature, which is benefit to optimize the control of the boiler actual operation.

Abstract:Unburned carbon content in the fly ash is a main factor that has great impacts on the boiler efficiency.It was affected by many factors and complicated.Building a model to predict unburned carbon content in the fly ash is a good way to optimize the coal combustion and then reduce unburned carbon content.In this work,a support vector machine model predicting the unburned carbon content in the fly ash of a high capacity boiler was developed and verified.Good predicting performance was achieved with the proper learning parameters.The modeling results show that support vector machine is a good tool for building combustion models and has better generalization ability and higher calculation speed comparing with other modeling approaches.

Abstract:The carbon content in the fly ash from most Chinese circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boilers is much higher than expected, which directly influences the combustion efficiency. In the present paper, carbon burnout was investigated in both field tests and laboratory experiments. The effect of coal property, operation condition, gas-solid mixing, char deactivation, residence time, and cyclone performance are analyzed seriatim based on a large amount of experimental results. A coal index is proposed to describe the coal rank, having a strong effect on the char burnout. Bad gas-solid mixing in the furnace is another important reason of the higher carbon content in the fly ash. Some chars in the fly ash are deactivated during combustion of large coal particles and have very low carbon reactivity. Several suggestions are made about design, operation, and modification to reduce the carbon content in the fly ash.
The Investigation of Carbon Content in Fly Ash for a BP Neural Network-based Pulverized Coal-fired Boiler

Abstract:Carbon content in fly ash is a major index, which reflects the combustion efficiency of a pulverized coal-fired utility boiler. On the basis of a BP (inverse propagation of error) neural network method set up was a 11-23-1 type BP neural network model. In accordance with the specific features of a four-corner tangentially fired pulverized- coal utility boiler 11 parameters which can influence combustion have been selected to serve as input factors of the neural network. The parameters include: pulverized coal fineness, burner tilting angle, oxygen content in flue gas, parameters of 5 ranks of coal, operation combination of burner spray nozzles, etc. A training course was conducted for the established model and model parameters were obtained. The error predicted by using the model is less than 6% when compared with actual values. On this basis the authors have also proposed a simplified method for analyzing the carbon content in fly ash, which may be affected by a single parameter. This makes it possible to attain under certain conditions a concise and intuitive reflection of multi-dimensional non-linear law contained in the network. The results of the calculation and analysis indicate that the model- based method can effectively identify the mechanism of various parameters in influencing the carbon content in fly ash and may be employed to conduct the analysis, prediction and optimized regulation of carbon content in boiler fly ash.
Unburned Carbon Loss in Fly Ash of CFB Boilers Burning Hard Coal

Abstract:The unburned carbon loss in fly ash of circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boilers, most of which are burning active fuels such as lignite or peat, is normally very low. However, most CFB boilers in China usually burn hard coals such as anthracite and bituminous coal and coal wastes, so the carbon content in the fly ash from these boilers is higher than expected. This paper investigates the source of unburned carbon in the fly ash of CFB boilers burning hard coal through a series of field tests and laboratory investigations. The char behavior during combustion, including fragmentation and deactivation, which is related to the parent coal, has an important impact on the carbon burnout in CFB boilers. The research shows that char deactivation occurs during char burnout in fluidized bed combustion, especially for large particles of low rank coal. The uneven mixing of solids and air in the core region of the furnace also causes poor burnout of carbon in CFB fly ash. An index describing the volatile content (as dry ash free basis) over the heating value is proposed to present the coal rank. The coal combustion efficiency is shown to be strongly connected with this coal index. Several changes in the CFB boiler design are suggested to reduce the unburned carbon loss in the fly ash.

Abstract:Fly ashes,obtained from three commercial CFB boilers with burning Fujian anthracites,were studied in this paper.By using standard dry-sieving techniques and LOI method,the size distributions of fly ashes and the carbon contents of different size fractions were measured.With the help of SEM and EDX technique,the particle superficial property of fly ash was examined and divided into carbon(soot,or graphite),char,and slag.The residual carbon was enriched from fly ash by the floating-separation technique,and its reactivity was then measured via a non-isothermal TGA experiment.The results was compared with that of its corresponding parent coal.Furthermore,in a laboratory pilot scale fluidized bed furnace,the source of the unburned carbon in the fly ash was explored.It is shown that for CFB boilers using a single cyclone separator,the largest amount of fly ash particles lies in the particle size range from 0.0385mm to 0.0500mm,and so does the unburned carbon fraction;and for CFB boiler equipped with two separators,the largest amount of fly ash particles and unburned carbon fraction lies in a particle size range of 0.0500mm~0.0750mm.There are three kinds of particles existing in fly ashes,which are granular unburned carbon,flocculent slag and char.The reactivity of the unburned carbon in fly ashes is relatively higher than that of its parent feeding coal.It can be induced from this study that the unburned carbon in fly ashes comes primarily from the fines existed in the fed coal and produced by the attrition and fragmentation of coal particles,which cannot be totally burned in the earlier stage of combustion.The clarain,which is of high reactivity and frangible,may be the main originations of unburned carbon in fly ash.

Abstract:In order to obtain optimum operation of boilers and then ensure timely ignition and completely burnout of pulverized coal, pulverized coal combustion processes in a 350MW boiler were numerically calculated under different primary air ratios and pulverized coal fineness. The Inter Phase Slip Algorithm model was employed for the two-phase flow simulation. The comprehensive coal combustion models were used to simulate combustion process. The numerical results showed the temperature field and the combustion species' concentration distributions in the combustion zone and at furnace exit. The effects of primary air ratio and pulverized coal fineness on pulverized coal ignition and unburned carbon content in fly ash were studied and optimum operation parameters were given. The results illustrate that primary air ratio has a major effect on pulverized coal ignition and minor effects on gas temperature, oxygen concentration and unburned carbon at furnace exit. Pulverized coal fineness has significant effects on pulverized coal ignition, combustion and burnout. Figs 8, tables 2 and refs 9.

Abstract:It is well known that the unburned carbon content in fly ash in a coal-fired circulating fluidized bed boiler has been a major problem. It contributes to a loss of combustion and boiler efficiency. The combustion of six kinds of coal was investigated in a bench scale circulating fluidized bed rig, which results were compared with that in circulating fluidized bed boiler burnt the same coal, and also correlated with the TAG dates. The results shows that the unburned carbon content in fly ash is affected not only by operation parameters, such as bed temperaure, excess air ratio, combustion air supply, bed inventory and its quality,but also by the coal characteristics, which is believed the key fact. With the TGA data, it is possible to predict the e unburned carbon content in fly ash when the coal is burnt in a circulating fluidized bed boiler.

Abstract:The use of Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) based numerical models has an important role in the design of new boiler furnaces or in retrofitting situations. This paper presented the effects of coal ash deposition on the results of CFD simulation. To assess the influence of fouling and slagging on the heat transfer in utility boilers, a model for predicting the heat transfer process with ash deposition was developed by introducing heat resistance to represent fouling and slagging on boiler walls. The evaluation of this model was performed using the plant heat flux reading data together with a CFD code. The comparison of the prediction results with plant data is encouraging and shows that this strategy can satisfy engineering need.

Abstract:The combustion efficiency is paid more attention on under the condition of circulating fluidized bed (CFB). Combustion in CFB is a complicated process which is connected with the gas-solid flow and its heat and mass transfer. A simplified model of single char particle combustion was suggested in this paper, where the particle was assumed shrank. The collection efficiency of cyclone, Oxygen concentration distribution, and mass transfer resistance were all considered. The numerical simulation results of carbon content in fly ash for different particle size for varies char agreed well the measurement from the CFB boiler for the same coal, which proves the reliability of the model. This model can explain the peak in carbon content in fly ash distribution vs. particle size. With this model, it can be indicated that there was a peak in the carbon content in fly ash distribution for varies particle size, where the diameter ranges from 20 to 50 micron, increasing the bed temperature or excess air ratio in the outlet of the furnace, the carbon content in fly ash could be decreased. While increasing the collection efficiency of the cyclone, the carbon content increases very little. This proposed us the limitation of the fly ash recirculation.

Abstract:Most utility boiler is Pulverized Coal(PC) fired in China.It is necessary for the coal particles and their combustion products to reside enough time in the high temperature furnace in order to reach higher combustion efficiency.The resident time of coal particles and their combustion products is seldom considered directly in a PC boiler design.While the furnace structure is determined according to the volumetric heat load combining the sectional heat load of the furnace.The structure data and operation performance of 55 real boilers are investigated in this paper.The capacities of these boilers range from 35 t/h to 3 035 t/h,the pressure covers from medium pressure to advanced supercritical.The relationship between the boiler capacity and the resident time of coal combustion products is collected and discussed.

Abstract:Through combustion experiments in an electricheated laboratoryscale fluidized bed combustor by using flyash slurry with high carbon content and coalwater mixture as fuels, the inflence of some factors, such as moisture content, mixed ratio of coal, bed temperature, and retention time etc., upon agglomeration behavior of flyash slurry and coalwater mixture has been studied, and the fluidized bed agglomeration combustion effects being investigated. Results of experiments show that the fluidized bed agglomeration combustion using abovementioned fuels is able to effectively decrease the carbon content in fly ash, providing a practical way for beneficially using unburnt combustibles in fly ash as a resourse.

Abstract:The reactivity of fly ash carbon and its corresponding parent coal was measured and compared by TGA experiment, the effect of fly ash reburn on the combustion efficiency of CFB boiler is analysis theoretically, and an industrial experiment was conducted to test the effect of fly ash reburn on the running temperature of cyclone recycle, on the fly ash particle distribution, on the fly ash carbon content, and on the boiler's combustion efficiency. It was shown that the reactivity of carbon enriched from fly ash of CFB boiler burning Fujian anthracite was higher than its corresponding parent feeding coal, the parameters such as the carbon content in fly ash itself and the ratio of the quantity of reburning fly ash to the mass of feeding coal have an important effect on the boiler's combustion efficiency. Fly ash reborn can bring beneficial to reduce the carbon content in fly ash, to reduce the running temperature of cyclone recycle, and to enhance the boiler's combustion efficiency, but when the amount of reburn fly ash is too large, it would cause the running of boiler unsteadily.
Non-linear Characteristics on Carbon Content of Fly Ash for Different Size Particles in Pulverized Coal Boiler

Abstract:The amount of residual carbon in fly ash is important for thermal efficiency and safe operation of the boilers, performance of generator unit and utilization of fly ash. The experimental investigation on the relationship between residual carbon content of fly ash and particle size was carried out. A non-linear relationship between unburned carbon content and particle size was observed. It is shown as a typical variety tendency that the carbon content decreases and then increases with the decrease of particle size. The validation works, which concluded comparing with the exiting researches, instances for different sampling conditions, power plants and coals were performed to confirm the present variety tendency. The rationality of the phenomenon reported was affirmed according to exiting experimental data on respects of coal-related factors and boiler-related factors. Moreover, the possible reasons for this non-linear variation trend were obtained by mechanism analysis. © 2009 Chin. Soc. for Elec. Eng.

Abstract:With the developing demand for high efficiency of the utility boilers, more attention is paid to the unburned carbon content in the fly ash from the high capacity tangential firing boiler, but the unburned carbon content in the fly ash is complicated and it is affected by many factors, such as coal character, boiler's load, air distribution, boiler style, burner style, furnace temperature, excess air ratio, pulverized coal fin-eness and the uniformity of the air and coal distribution, etc. In this paper, the unburned carbon content in the fly ash of a 300MW utility tangentially firing coal burned boiler is experi-mental investigated, and taking advantage of the nonlinear dy-namics characteristics and self-learning characteristics of artifi-cial neural network, an artificial neural network model on un-burned property of the high capacity boiler is developed and verified.
