Abstract:A general theory of measuring multiport networks is presented. In order to measure microwave multiport networks conveniently a method involving the stepwise reduction of the order of the network under test is suggested. All formulas for calibrating and measuring the triple six-port network analyzer, which is a universal six-port network analyzer, are given without any ambiguity. The procedures for calibration and measurement are very simple. No standard three-port network is needed to calibrate the six-port system. Finally, the error caused by nonideal isolation is discussed.<>

Abstract:Nowadays, more and more MMICs (Microwave Monolithic Integrated Circuit), such as limiters and switches, are designed to have balanced and unbalanced test pad structures to solve the challenging size restrictions and integration requirements for MMICs. Hybrid balanced and unbalanced RF (Radio Frequency) probes are adopted for an on-wafer test of the heteromorphy structures. The thru standard based on single balanced or unbalanced structures cannot meet the impedance matching requirements of the hybrid RF probes at the same time, which leads to a dramatic decreasing of the calibration accuracy and cannot satisfy the requirement of MMIC test. Therefore, in this paper, the calibration error estimating of hybrid RF probes based on traditional SOLR (Short Open Load Reciprocal) calibration method is performed, and an on-wafer test approach of MMIC based on hybrid balanced and unbalanced RF probes is proposed which combines the OSL (Open Short Load) second-order de-embedding technique with vector error correction and the matrix transformation technique. The calibration reference plane can be accurately shifted to the probe tip with this method, which greatly improves the test accuracy, and an automatic test system is built for this method based on the object-oriented C# language.

Abstract:It is well known that experimental errors are inevitable,while if different experiment parameters are adopted,different experiment accuracies are to be derived at last,though based on the same experimental principle.An experiment that tests the equivalent parameters of a passive one-port network based on triangular voltage measurement method is put forward.By analyzing the final experimental error of this test,certain experiment strategy can be obtained as well as some effective methods to reduce the experimental error.

Abstract:This article presents a novel four-port symmetric probe calibration method for on-wafer S-parameter measurement, where by using the symmetric property of the probes, the four-port calibration process is greatly simplified while maintaining a high calibration accuracy. Only four measurements with four different calibration standards are needed in the proposed calibration process, including open, short, load, and thru. Furthermore, only the phase sign is needed for the thru standard rather than its precise S-parameters. The proposed calibration method coupled with an optimization approach is developed to obtain the parasitic parameters of the open, short, and load standards. The proposed method can consider the crosstalk between the probes and move the calibration reference planes to the probe tips. The accuracy of the proposed method is validated in an on-wafer S-parameter measurement system with both ground–signal–signal–ground (GSSG) and ground–signal–ground–signal–ground (GSGSG) probes up to 50 GHz.

Abstract:In this paper, a multiport network S-parameter restoration and calibration procedure is proposed. Taking advantages of the analysis method for multiport network with arbitrary loads in S-parameter domain, the procedure involves no additional standard calibration kit but only a 2-port vector network analyzer (VNA) and a few arbitrary loads. Going through all 2-port combinations for measurement and leaving the remaining ports to be loaded with arbitrary terminations, S-parameters of an N-port device under test (DUT) are reconstructed by no more than N!/(2!(N-2)!) times of measurement. This procedure does not complicate experiment operation and instead decreases cost of multiport measurement. Results of this procedure is compared with standard $\boldsymbol{50 \ \Omega}$ matching calibration for verification.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel four-port calibration method for on-wafer S-parameter measurement. Crosstalk terms can seriously deteriorate the measurement accuracy of high-frequency on-wafer systems. The proposed method can consider all error and crosstalk terms in on-wafer measurement using two ground-signal-signal-ground (GSSG) probes and ensure high calibration accuracy. Only six calibration standards are required to complete the four-port calibration by this method. The proposed method is verified by full-wave simulations up to 100 GHz. The simulation and calibration results are in great agreement, which proves the correctness and reliability of the proposed method.

Abstract:Multitude of antennas are typically used in microwave imaging systems. Here we outline a simple and effective calibration method for multiport imaging systems. By using only one additional component, an electronic calibration module (ECal), one port is calibrated and the calibration plane is thereby moved to the antenna connector. Assuming all antennas interact with the test phantom in the same way, the one-port calibration is transferred to all other antennas. For full calibration including the transmission path between antennas, the unknown thru technique is used. This calibration procedure is simple and it can be fully automated, and no RF components are perturbed.

Abstract:A radio frequency (RF) test system is typically calibrated by a two-port network analyzer in conventional setups. However, the conventional calibration scheme becomes problematic for 5G base station (BS) test system as example due to setup complexity, cost and potential mismatch problems. A cost-effective single-port measurement scheme is presented in this paper. Based on the existing test system, the presented measurement scheme directly utilizes a single-port unit to calibrate the BS test system by three steps, i.e. unit self-calibration, switching matrix measurement and post-processing. The presented single-port measurement scheme is experimentally demonstrated to achieve the equivalent functionality as the conventional network analyzer scheme, reduce the measurement cost, while addressing the measurement inaccuracy introduced by the potential mismatching issue.

Abstract:At least three known standards are normally required for the full two-port test fixture calibration in vector network analyzers (VNA). In this paper, a calibration procedure using only one standard, based on establishing two hypothetical symmetrical fixtures using triple-through method, is shown. The results using the calibrating method to subtract the influence of fixtures are in accord with the directly measured data of the device-under-test (DUT) without the fixtures very well, which shows that the proposed method is very simple and accurate.

Abstract:An efficient microwave network method is proposed for signal and power integrity analysis of a multilayer printed circuit board with multiple vias and decoupling capacitors. The multilayer parallel plate structure is described as a cascaded microwave network. The admittance matrix of a single plate pair with ports defined in via holes both on top and bottom plates is obtained through the intrinsic via circuit model and impedance matrix between two plates. A recursive algorithm is provided to obtain the combined admittance matrix of two layers of plate pair coupled through via holes on a common plate. Decoupling capacitors are naturally treated as impedance loads to the cascaded admittance network. Numerical simulations and measurements have been used to validate the method and good agreements have been observed. While the method is as accurate as full-wave numerical solvers, it achieves much higher efficiencies both in CPU time and memory requirements.

Abstract:A design method of a L/S-band microwave network is introduced in this paper. First the technique of demultiplexer, filter, phase shifter and quadrature device are described in detail, then the scheme that the linear polarization can be adjusted independently in L/S-band is presented and finally the metrical result is given. The test results indicate that the microwave network has such characteristics as broadband, good VSWR and good axial ratio.

Abstract:One-port and two-port calibrations of the microwave vector network analyzer are presented when we take experiment in a vacuum metal chamber.Using the two-port TRM calibration technique to eliminate the system errors is described in detail.The feasibilities of several methods of measurement are discussed,and the results with different calibrations are compared.Using the calibrated system we measured the transmission characteristics of the incident microwave in plasma.

Abstract:In this paper, an accurate calibration and calculation method of six-port circuit is proposed and tested in a microfluidic sensing system. Based on the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm, a nonlinear iteration calibration model with the removal of redundancy equations is employed to calculate the system parameters of the six-port circuit. The reflection coefficient of device under test is calculated by the same iteration algorithm. To confirm the general accuracy of the algorithm, a series of coaxial loads are measured by six-port reflectometer. The maximum error referring to a commercial VNA is 1.2 dB/7 degrees at the lowest measured reflection coefficient magnitude of - 20 dB from 2.4 to 2.9 GHz. The mentioned calculation result of the reflection coefficient for the resonator is accurate enough to show little influence to the judgement of resonant frequency and quality factor. Utilizing the respective linear fitting curve, the real part and imaginary part of permittivity of an unknown microfluidic sample can be obtained by six-port reflectometer. The calculating range of permittivity and the average calculating error is (7.7,77.0) and 4.9 % in real part and (7.3,18.2) and 3.5 % in imaginary part. In general, this approach enhance the accuracy of reflection coefficient calculating by six-port and further improve the application value of six-port in low-cost microfluidic sensing systems.

Abstract:This paper presents a calibration method used to compensate channel amplitude and phase mismatch of the retrodirective antenna array for microwave power transmission. The calibration algorithm of N elements array antenna involves transmission of N time multiplexed orthogonal encoded signals. The received signals are coherently detected, accumulated in vector forms, and a set of correction factors are decoded from the received signal using the inverse of the encoded matrix. A Hadamard matrix is used as the encoding matrix. The demonstration of calibration method is carried out by simulation and analysis.

Abstract:To solve the problem of the traditional stripline power divider,which needs before and after phase compensation,the paper introduces a new method that adding the coupling conductor in the cavity.The designed model uses a coaxial line as input and output port,then a T structure stripline connects with radial line by the quarter-wavelength impedance transformer.A new kind of C-band high phase consistency six-way power splitters is optimized and designed,of which the test results coincide well with CST simulation results.In the working frequency band 5.3 ～ 5.9 GHz,input return loss is less than-18.3 dB,output return loss is less than-15.3 dB,phase consistency is better than ± 1 °,and insertion loss is less then 0.2 dB.

Abstract:This paper develops a novel approach to the calibration of the phase shifter network (PSN) in millimeter wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems under multipath channel scenarios. Specifically, we formulate the core phase deviation estimation problem in the calibration task as an optimization program with uni-modular constraints. Efficient algorithms are then developed to estimate the phase deviations that need to be calibrated. To gauge the performance of the proposed schemes, we derive the Cramer-Rao lower bounds (CRLBs) for the phase estimates. Numerical results validate the effectiveness of our approach by showing that the proposed algorithm yields estimates whose mean squared errors (MSEs) are close to the CRLBs.

Abstract:A miniaturized microwave six-port junction using a newly presented shunt-stub-based meander line was proposed. The structure and theory of the proposed meander line were analyzed, while an effective design procedure was presented. A prototype six-port junction of 2.4 GHz center frequency was designed, fabricated and measured. The circuit size of the proposed six-port junction is just 25.3% of that of the conventional one. Furthermore, the proposed six-port junction doesn’t sacrifice any electrical characteristic and has the similar frequency responses with those of the conventional one.

Abstract:In this letter, a phased array antenna with a self-calibration network and improved scanning performance is proposed. For the online calibration, the phased array antenna requires a self-calibration network, which occupies the space between the antenna elements. Besides, the coupling suppression structure for improving the scanning performance of the phased array also needs to be placed between antenna elements. To place these two structures with different functions at the same time, it is a good method to reuse the self-calibration network as the coupling suppression structure. In this letter, one side of metallic vias of the substrate integrated waveguide cavity to suppress the element coupling is replaced by a coupling microstrip line. Such a hybrid structure can not only realize the online calibration function but also improve the scanning performance of the phased array. Moreover, to reduce the dynamic range of the coupling coefficient between the antenna element and the coupling end of the self-calibration network, reactance regulator blocks are employed on the coupling microstrip line. The coupling coefficient is between 17.2 and 24.5 dB in the operating frequency band from 15 to 17 GHz. With the self-calibration network, the gain of the 8 8 patch antenna is increased by 1.95 dB, and the sidelobe level is decreased by about 4.20 dB when scanning at 50 in the E-plane.
