Abstract:The scale factor, which the output of the fiber optic gyroscope (FOG) is proportional to, is sensitive to many factors in engineering. When the scale factor fluctuates during the measurement process, it will bring an error to the angle measurement results if the scale factor is not calibrated in time. A scale factor real-time calibration and angle measurement scheme based on self-collimator is proposed to eliminate the error caused by the fluctuation of the scale factor. The experimental results show that the error between the FOG and the rotary table is decreased to nearly 1 '' after adopting the scheme at low angular velocities. Although the error is become larger when the angular velocity is increasing, the angle measurement results can still has a good stability.

Abstract:The fiber optic gyroscope (FOG) has been widely used in the field of dynamic angle measurement due to its characteristics of wide dynamic range and high precision. Considering the change of the installation state of the FOG and the inconvenience of the calibration of the scale factor in engineering, an error compensation of the angle measurement using FOG, which is based on the tilt sensor, is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the principle of the angle measurement based on the FOG and the principle of the tilt sensor are introduced and the error compensation model based on tilt sensor is established. Secondly, simulation analysis and error analysis are performed and the compensation scheme is designed. Finally, according to the compensation scheme, the instrument prototype is built and the experiments are carried out. The experimental results show that although the error is not completely eliminated after adopting compensation scheme, the angle measurement deviation of the FOG can be greatly reduced and limited within 5 '' when the tilt state changes within a small range (the output of the tilt sensor is less than 0.3 degrees). It indicates that the compensation scheme is effective and feasible. More importantly, it is easier to realize in engineering in contrast with other compensation methods.

Abstract:As the angle measuring error of fiber optic gyroscope increases cumulatively under the condition of long-term operation,a new error calibration method is proposed for fiber optic sensor.The method is based on the principle of optical triangulation distance measurement,using data acquired by two laser displacement sensors to realize the real-time angular measurement,and the experimental verification of the measurement system is carried out on the high-precision turntable.Experimental results show that the range of angle measurement can be up to ± 10°,while the error is about ±0.005° through compensating the error by least square fitting method,which provides the basis for exact estimate of angle measuring precision of gyro.The non-contact optical measurement method used has no damage to the sur face to be measured.

Abstract:The feedback parameter of closed-loop fiber optic gyroscope (FOG) in various engineering applications is discussed. It has been proved that unreasonable feedback parameter will cause great interference and serious distortion to the output signal. Therefore, we build a concise feedback control mode and obtain optimal range of feedback parameter. For different input signals concerned which nearly include all of the application scenarios in practice, detailed simulations and experiments are completed. The results show that the feedback parameter should be small in static applications and moderate for high response requirements. What is more, it should be relatively small when used in low-bandwidth measurement fields to ensure the response performance of low frequency signal and suppress high frequency noise and vice versa. This work plays an important guiding role for related parameter setting in the feedback control system of sensors, especially for gyroscope.

Abstract:The scale factor (SF) of a gyroscope is the ratio of the detection output rotational rate and the input, and is expected to be a constant. However, for open-loop interferometric fiber optic gyroscopes (IFOGs) with sinusoidal modulation, harmonic amplitudes are inevitably affected by detection defects, such as nonuniform frequency response of the photodetector or unequal gain of amplification circuits. As a result, harmonic distortion leads to SF nonlinearity, which seriously hinders the accuracy of high-precision gyroscopes. In this Letter, the theoretical form of the SF error introduced by harmonic distortion of open-loop gyroscopes is analyzed, and an effective and simple compensation method is proposed. Instead of traversing the whole dynamic range, the proposed method simplifies the calibration pretest, where only a section of the dynamic range needs to be tested. Experimental results on an open-loop IFOG prototype show that, with our proposed method, the SF nonlinear error is suppressed to 2.5 ppm within the range -300 to +300∘/s, which is 33 times less than that before compensation.

Abstract:The calibration accuracy of the inertial navigation system (INS) has a non-negligible effect on its actual navigation performance. As the core component of the INS, the scale factor error of the fiber optical gyroscope (FOG) is one of the main error sources of the INS, which has a vital impact on the navigation accuracy. Generally, the scale factor of FOG is considered to be a constant value, but with the increasing demand for the accuracy of FOG, the scale factor error can not be ignored, how to calibration the FOG scale factor at different input velocity rates and temperature has attracted people's attention. The traditional calibration methods usually select several fixed temperature points and input velocity points, then the scale factor error is compensated by linear fitting or piecewise fitting. In order to improve the calibration accuracy, our paper considers the coupling effect of input velocity rate and temperature and designs a calibration experiment at continuous input velocity rates and temperature, the calibration time is shortened by 30%, then we propose a nonlinear error compensation method based on the LSTM. The experimental result shows that the std error of the FOG scale factor is reduced from 280 ppm to 13 ppm and the angle measurement error is reduced by 70%, which verify the effectiveness of our method.

Abstract:In this paper, the spectrum characteristics of the closed-loop RFOG, modulated by the digital sine and bipolar serrodyne wave, is analyzed under the dynamic condition. It is verified that the serious spectrum overlapping between the CCW and CW loops would be induced within a certain rotation rate range, which would increase the backscatter noise. Experimental tests indicate that the serious spectrum overlapping could more than double the standard deviation of gyro output signal, which badly deteriorates the gyro’s performance. According to the spectrum characteristics analysis result, to reduce the spectrum overlapping induced backscatter noise under the dynamic condition, a noise suppressing algorithm is proposed. This algorithm is realized by switching the initial reset frequency of the bipolar serrodyne wave at a crucial rotation rate to keep an enough frequency difference between the two modulation spectrums’ main harmonic components. Experimental test shows that when this algorithm is used, the decreased ratio of the standard deviation for gyro output signal can reach to about 70.5% at the rotation rates corresponding to the serious spectrum overlapping.

Abstract:The resonant fiber-optic gyroscope (RFOG) based on the Sagnac effect is a high-accuracy rotation sensor. The intermodulation error due to the laser noise at even harmonics of the modulation frequency deteriorates the performance of the RFOG. Aiming at the suppression of high-frequency laser noise, a phase-modulated feedback loop is developed and analyzed. The parameters of the servo loop is optimized to enhance the performance of the gyroscope.

Abstract:The nonlinear error of scale factor of depolarized fiber gyroscope(D-FOG)with closed-loop has been investigated theoretically and experimentally for the first time.Our results show that the nonlinear error of depolarized FOG with standard single-mode fiber coil,which is larger than that of polarization-maintaining FOG,is caused by the different modulated depths of serrodyne for the two states of polarization.Practical methods to reduce nonlinear error of depolarized FOG are suggested in this paper.

Abstract:A harmonic division technique is proposed for an open-loop resonator fiber optic gyro (RFOG) to suppress semiconductor laser diode's (LD's) intensity modulation noise. The theoretical study indicates the RFOG with this technique is immune to the intensity noise. The simulation and experimental results show this technique would lead to a diminished linear region, which still could be acceptable for an RFOG applied to low rotation rate detection. The tests for the gyro output signal are carried out with/without noise suppressing methods, including the harmonic division technique and previously proposed signal compensation technique. With the harmonic division technique at the rotation rate of 10deg/s, the stability of gyro output signal is improved from 1.07deg/s to 0.0361deg/s, whose noise suppressing ratio is more than 3 times as that of the signal compensation technique. And especially, a 3.12deg/s signal jump is significantly removed with the harmonic division technique; in contrast, a residual 0.36deg/s signal jump still exists with the signal compensation technique. It is concluded the harmonic division technique does work in intensity noise suppressing under dynamic condition, and it is superior to the signal compensation technique.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel method for detecting and tracking the half-wave voltage of the phase modulator in a resonant fiber-optic gyroscope (RFOG) is proposed and demonstrated. A theoretical model is first developed to illustrate the effect of phase modulator half-wave voltage fluctuations on the stability of the RFOG scale factor. A novel method for detecting the half-wave voltage fluctuations is then proposed by applying an additional sawtooth modulation signal. Based on this, a double closed-loop RFOG system scheme employing a half-wave voltage servo loop is designed to simultaneously eliminate the sawtooth wave reset voltage error during the RFOG operation. The performance of the RFOG was tested under variable temperature conditions. The experimental results indicated that the reset voltage errors could be controlled within 1 mV, and the scale factor thermal stability was improved from 95.97 ppm/°C to 9.39 ppm/°C.

Abstract:The usual scheme of fiber-optic gyroscope(FOG) is digital single closed-loop, but the scale factor stability is affected by the variation of half-wave voltage of LiNbO3 integrated optic phase modulator. The half-wave voltage changes with the variation of the integrated optic phase modulator performance dependence on temperature and the bias voltage applied to the phase modulator. In order to improve the scale factor stability, double closed-loop scheme FOG with square wave biasbias modulation is used to compensate the the variation of half-wave voltage, but it is inefficient at low rates. The double closed-loop scheme FOG with ldquofour-bias-staterdquo bias modulation is used to improve the compensation efficiency and SNR, and the bias modulation equations are presented here. The scale factor stability of the new scheme is improved about by one time than the usual scheme.

Abstract:Resonator fiber optical gyroscope (R-FOG) uses ring resonator to enhance the Sagnac effect, the detecting methods have open-loop and closed-loop, the phase modulator′s controlling signal has analogous and digital in circuit. Compared with analogous modulation, the method of digital closed-loop detection has a big dynamic range and high sensitivity. In resonator fiber optic gyroscopes by digital modulation, imperfect serrodyne′s reset amplitude V_ 2π has influence on the rotation sensing errors and the scale factor non-linearity. The effects of imperfect V_ 2π on the system are analyzed theoretically. If the amplitude is not exactly V_ 2π, two electric fields, E_ cross and E_ bar cannot result in optimum destructive interference, thus the resulting waveform has errors. Based on the sum of electric fields expression in detector, numerical calculations of rotation sensing errors associated with imperfect serrodyne amplitude are given for resonator fiber optical gyro using two frequencies modulation. At last, some solutions for substantially reducing errors are presented.

Abstract:Fiber Optic Gyro (FOG) is a new kind of inertial sensor. It has many theoretic advantages over traditional gyros and other optic gyros. This paper presents an all-digital close-loop operation based on DSP circuits, which uses the two-frequency serrodyne modulation to modulate and demodulate the optic route. Considering the white noise mixed in optical signal and the quantization noise from limited bits of A/D, we propose to over-sample the raw signal with the rate of sample which is much higher than its bandwidth. Combined with digital signal processing followed, the detection using A/D with lower bits has nearly the same results as that using A/D with higher bits. The resolution of digital modulation limits the precision of the whole system. Using the average method applied to the D/A,a large dynamic range of modulation can be obtained with lower bits. By the experiment based on the designed digital system, a demodulation curve resembling theoretic simulation is obtained, and the feasibility of this scheme of digital close-loop is proved.

Abstract:Fiber optic gyroscope (FOG) has the advantages of small size, light weight, large dynamic range, fast start up and long life. It can be widely used in military fields and civil fields. As the performance of the optoelectronic devices in the FOG varies with the temperature, the performance of the FOG will be affected. In the use of the carrier high speed, the scaling factor error caused by temperature change is the main error of the FOG, its effect on accuracy is much greater than random drift. FOG often needs to work in a wide temperature range, so the scaling factor needs to be modeled and compensated. Because of the temperature error of the scaling factor is very non-linear, the accuracy of using the traditional polynomial fitting method to compensate the scaling factor is poor. The neural network can approximate any continuous function with any desired accuracy, so this paper uses the BP neural network method to compensate the temperature error of the FOG scaling factor. First, this paper analyzes the error mechanism of the scaling factor, and establishes a theoretical model of the temperature error of the scaling factor. Then the FOG scaling factor in the full temperature range is measured, and the temperature error of the scaling factor is modeled and compensated by using the above two methods. It can be seen from the compensation results that the neural network model can get a good compensation effect, and the accuracy is better than the polynomial fitting method.

Abstract:Based on closed-loop fiber optical gyroscopes, research work on the temperature stability of the scale-factor has been performed. The mathematical expression of the scale-factor has been established. The mechanism of temperature influence on the stability of scale-factor was analyzed. The coefficient of some parameters was given. An experiment on the temperature stability of the scale-factor has been performed in closed-loop fiber optical gyroscopes. It can be seen from the experimental results that the temperature sensitivity of the scale-factor has been changed from 8.08 × 10-4/°C to 1.70 × 10-5/°C.
