Abstract:Most existing turbo-generators have only three terminals on the neutral side.Complete longitudinal differential protection, the most common protection system for turbo-generators,can only detect phase-to-phase faults, while longitudinal zero-sequence overvoltage protection and negative-sequence power directional protection of the fault components do not work well when a large number of turn-to-turn faults occur. Thus, new protection methods are needed for stator turn-to-turn faults for turbo-generators.The terminal negative-sequence equivalent impedances for internal asymmetry and external asymmetry generator faults were analyzed to develop a negative-sequence impedance direction criterion based on the phase-angle range.A negative-sequence impedance directional protection triggered by the negative-sequence current was developed to respond to internal asymmetry generator faults with precautions against triggering misoperation. The multi-loop method was used to calculate all possible internal short-circuit faults for two typical turbo-generators to obtain the protection sensitivities. The results show that the protection is superior to other methods in terms of the sensitivity and protection range, especially for turn-to-turn faults. The protection protects against internal faults in turbo-generators with only three terminals on the neutral side.
