Effect of pacemaker parameter on quality of life in patients

Abstract:Aim: To evaluate the effect of modified parameter of pacemaker on the quality of life(QOL) in patients with pacemaker by investigation of QOL before and after the modification of parameter. Methods: Totally 98 patients were selected, including 24 cases with biventricular pacing, 15 with anti-atrial fibrillation pacemaker, 20 with dual-chamber pacing systems with sensor-based rate-adaptive capability (DDPR pacemakers), 28 with fully automatic dual chamber pacing(DDD Pacemaker) and 11 with ventricular demand pacemaker (VVI pacemaker). The 36-item short-form health survey scale(SF-36) was finished during the follow-up after operation, and the patients were evaluated by the SF-36 before and after the modification of parameters respectively by themselves every time in 30 minutes. Measuring scales were adopted by standard marks, and all data statistically analyzed. Results: After modification of pacemaker parameters, scores of SF-36 increased from 102.31 ± 7.54 to 112 04 ± 6.78 in the 98 patients. The scores of six aspects of SF-36, including physical function, physical role, body pain, general health, vitality and social function, were better than those before modification(t = 1.993 - 2.448, P < 0.05). However, the scores of emotional role and mental health had no significant difference compared with those before modification(P > 0.05). Conclusion: Postoperative follow-up of pacemaker should be regarded highly in order to improve the QOL in pacemaker patients, and reasonably and effectively utilizing programmed parameters of pacemaker will bring the best therapeutic efficiency.
