Abstract:ABSTRACTSolution and aqueous miniemulsion polymerizations of vinyl chloride (VC) mediated by (3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,8‐tridecafluorooctyl‐2‐((ethoxycarbonothioyl)thio) propanoate) (X1) were studied. The living characters of X1‐mediated solution and miniemulsion polymerizations of VC were confirmed by polymerization kinetics. The miniemulsion polymerization exhibits higher rate than solution polymerization. Final conversions of VC in the reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) miniemulsion polymerization reach as high as 87% and are independent of X1 concentration. Initiation process of X1‐mediated RAFT miniemulsion polymerization is controlled by the diffusion–adsorption process of prime radicals. Due to the heterogeneity of polymerization environments and concentration fluctuation of RAFT agent in droplets or latex particles, PVCs prepared in RAFT miniemulsion exhibit relatively broad molecular weight distribution. Furthermore, chain extensions of living PVC (PVC‐X) with VC, vinyl acetate (VAc), and N‐vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) reveal that PVC‐X can be reinitiated and extended, further confirming the living nature of VC RAFT polymerization. PVC‐b‐PVAc diblock copolymer is successfully synthesized by the chain extension of PVC‐X in RAFT miniemulsion polymerization. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Abstract:Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) has been a fascinating subject for polymer science research. Its characteristics are heightened by its inherent structural faults resulting from direct manufacturing (by free-radical polymerization), which also cause its thermal instability. Some of the fundamental limiting features of PVC have been suggested to be alleviated by improved chemistry during PVC synthesis, in addition to the use of both inorganic and organic thermal stabilizers. The characteristics, characterization, modification, recycling, and various applications of PVC are all examined in this paper along with the past and most recent research discoveries. It has been suggested that some of the fundamental limiting properties of PVC can be lessened by applying both inorganic and organic thermal stabilizers in conjunction with improved chemistry during PVC manufacture. Numerous ongoing studies have expanded this chemistry, primarily through the chemical changes of this polymeric substance. The chemical modification of PVC employing various materials as an active modifying agent is described in this work. The latter comprised grafting polymerizations, nucleophilic radicals, substitutions, PVC modifications, and removal or dehydrochlorination. This perspective addresses the main PVC reactivity trends and provides an overview of PVC functionalization while examining the environmental implications of PVC via the prism of chemical recycling. Through extensive ongoing research, this chemistry has been expanded, primarily through the chemical changes of this polymeric substance. To improve its photo-stability properties, expand the applications of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), and investigate PVC-related phenomena, numerous chemical modifications have been introduced to PVC.

Abstract:One of the polymers with the biggest production volume is poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) considering their versatility, durability, lightweight, as well as low cost of production, plastics have recently become an essential part of everyone's daily life. However, the increased production and usage of plastics poses significant environmental problems because of their incomplete utilization, a lengthy biodegradation period, and detrimental effects on living things. This study examines the latest findings in PVC research, including its properties, polymerization, modification, recycling, and diverse applications. It has been proposed that during PVC production, along with the application of both inorganic and organic thermal stabilizers, can mitigate some of the basic limiting characteristics of PVC. This chemistry has been extended by vast continuous study, mainly by the chemical transformations of this polymeric material. This study describes the chemical modification of PVC using different materials as an active modifying agent. The latter included substitutions, PVC modifications, nucleophilic radicals, removal or dehydrochlorination, and grafting polymerizations. PVC's environmental consequences are examined, and an overview of PVC functionalization is provided in this article, along with a discussion of the main PVC reactivity trends using the lens of chemical recycling.

Abstract:Effects of individual and composed poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) suspending agents on the particle morphology of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) resins were investigated and discussed in the view of PVA absorption at the oil/water interface and interfacial behavior. It was shown that the percentage and surface coverage of PVA at the oil/water interface decreased with the increase of the degree of hydrolysis (DH) of PVA in the DH range of 70-98 mol%, while the interfacial tension of VC/PVA aqueous solution increased linearly with the increase of DH of PVA. PVC resin with more regular particle shape, increased agglomeration and fusion of primary particles, lower porosity and higher bulk density, was prepared by using PVA with a higher DH as a suspending agent. This was caused by the occurrence of drop coalescence at the very early stage of VC polymerization, the increase of particle shrinkage, and the lower colloidal protection to primary particles. It was also shown that the interfacial tension of VC/water in the presence of composed PVA suspending agents varied linearly with the weight composition of the composed PVA suspending agents. The particle properties of PVC resin prepared by using the composed PVC suspending agents were usually situated in between the properties of PVC resins prepared by using the corresponding individual PVA suspending agent. The particle morphology and properties of PVC resin could be controlled by the suitable choice of the composed PVA suspending agents. (C) 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:The in situ suspension polymerization of vinyl chloride was carried out in a system containing chlorinated polyethylene (CPE, the impact modifier), CaCO 3 (the filler), lubricants and thermal stabilizers to generate ready-to-processing PVC resins (RTUPVC). The effects of the various additives on the polymerization and the properties of the resins were investigated. The polymerization time until certain pressure drop was reduced with the addition of CPE and CaCO 3, however, the lubricant and thermal stabilizer retarded the polymerization. CPE improved the plasticity and both impact and tensile strengths. RTUPVC resin exhibited higher impact and tensile strengths than PVC/CPE blends with the same CPE content. The particle size of the resin was increased with increasing content of CPE, but not affected by other additives.

Abstract:Vinyl chloride (VC)/divinyl derivative copolymerization was carried out in the suspension process for preparing chemically crosslinked poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). Effects of the reactivity ratios and concentration of divinyl, polymerization temperature and conversion on the structure of crosslinked PVC (such as the gel fraction, polymerization degree of sol and crosslinking density of gel) were investigated. It showed that the crosslinking behavior of various divinyls was different. The crosslinking efficiency of diallyl maleate (DAM) was higher than that of diallyl phthalate (DAP) and ethyl glycol dimethyl acrylate (EGDMA). The crosslinking efficiency of EGDMA was very low due to its high probability of homopolymerization. The gel fraction and crosslinking density of gel increased as the concentration of DAP increased, and decreased with the increase of polymerization temperature for VC/DAP copolymer. Polymerization degree of sol of VC/DAP copolymer decreased with the increase of concentration of DAP and varied with polymerization temperature. The crosslinking density of gel increased gradually with the increase of the gel fraction at lower gel fraction stage, and increased rapidly at higher gel fraction stage. The concentration of double bonds of VC/DAP copolymerization system increased as polymerization proceeded, which resulted in the increase of gel fraction of VC/DAP copolymer as conversion increased.

Abstract:This review covers recent development of PVC production technologies of the suspension polymerization process, the bulk (mass) polymerization process and the emulsion polymerization process with some historical background. The development of process for the vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) production is also explained briefly. Since the suspension process is regarded to be the most important process with its 80% share of the world total production, this review follows mainly the technology development of the suspension polymerization process. Because of the importance of hygienic problems caused by VCM, the technology development in the field of emission control is also covered.

Abstract:Chemical crosslinked poly(vinyl chloride) (C-PVC) was synthesized by vinyl chloride suspension polymerization in the presence of diallyl phthalate (DAP) and plasticized to prepare poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) materials. The chemical crosslinking and physical crosslinking structure in chemical crosslinked PVC-TPE were investigated. It showed that the gel fraction and the crosslinking density of gel increased as the feed concentration of DAP increased. C-PVC prepared by VC/DAP copolymerization was lightly crosslinked as compared with irradiation crosslinked PVC. Physical entanglements would greatly influence the crosslinking density of gel when the gel fraction was high. Chemical crosslinking had little influence on the recrystallization behavior of PVC. A structure model of chemical crosslinked PVC-TPE was proposed, in which chemical networks acted with physical networks cooperatively. It also showed that chemical crosslinking and physical crosslinking influenced the processability and mechanical properties of chemical crosslinked PVC-TPE cooperatively. Although the processability of PVC-TPE deteriorated with chemical crosslinking, the dimension stability and elasticity of PVC-TPE were improved as the permanent chemical networks were introduced. Abstract:The polymerization of vinyl chloride(VC) in supercritical carbon dioxide(Sc-CO2) was conducted,and the polymerization process and particle feature of the resulting PVC resin were investigated.Experiment and analysis results showed that the VC conversion decreased with increase of polymerization pressure,which due to the gel effect was lessened.Single-feed of initiator and efficient stirring aslo resulted in decrease of VC conversion,which due to the free radicals and the active radical chain were imbedded and quenched by the metal wall of the reaction vessel.The mechanism of particle formation in Sc-CO2 differed from that in aqueous suspension.SEM micrographs showed that PVC powders prepared in Sc-CO2 were composed of aggregates of primary particles with no skin.

Abstract:Plasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC) has been widely used in the world. Petroleum-based plasticizers especially phthalates have been the most common plasticizers used in PVC. However, the global petroleum resources are becoming scarce gradually, and the hygienic requirements for plasticizers are increasing. Owing to the negative impact of petroleum-based plasticizers on human health and the environment, their use has been restricted in the USA, the European and so on. Biomass renewable resources have wide range of sources and low prices, and the chemicals obtained from them have various structures, which can provide a huge platform to design novel PVC plasticizers with the aim of replacing traditional phthalate plasticizers. Many bio-based PVC plasticizers, such as vegetable oil-based plasticizers, cardanol-based plasticizers, lactic acid-based plasticizers, waste cooking oil-based plasticizers, polyester plasticizers, hyperbranched plasticizers and so on, have been extensively studied. We have reviewed recent research progress on different types of novel bio-based PVC plasticizers and assorted them by raw materials and chemical structure. Through in-depth analysis of the relationship between the chemical structure and the plasticizing performance, the efficiency of plasticizers may be predicted before they have been designed. This review will be beneficial for the development of bio-based plasticizers by pointing out the research and application direction.Graphical abstract
