Abstract:Poly(ethylene glycol) terminated with xanthate (X-PEG-X) was synthesized and used as the reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agent for controlling vinyl chloride (VC) solution and suspension polymerizations to synthesize poly(vinyl chloride)-b-poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC-b-PEG-b-PVC) triblock copolymers. Results show that the molecular weights (MW) of block copolymers prepared by the solution polymerization are increased with the polymerization conversion, and the molecular weight distribution (MWD) index is lower than 1.65. X-PEG-X is amphiphilic and can effectively reduce the interfacial tension between water and oil. Thus, a novel VC RAFT suspension polymerization method was proposed to prepare PVC-b-PEG-b-PVC copolymers using X-PEG-X as the RAFT agent and a suspending agent. The block copolymer particles have no surface membranes, and MW of copolymer is increased with conversion. However, the block copolymers prepared by suspension polymerization exhibit wider MWD than the block copolymers prepared by solution polymerization, due to the two-phase mechanism of VC suspension polymerization. The chain extension of PVC-b-PEG-b-PVC with vinyl acetate (VAc) further prove the "living" nature of PVC-b-PEG-b-PVC copolymers and result the formation of PVAc-b-PVC-b-PEG-b-PVC-b-PVAc copolymer. PVC-b-PEG-b-PVC copolymers exhibit better hydrophilicity than PVC.

Abstract:Two kinds of acrylate-modified polyesters were synthesized, one of the two is semi-crystalline while the other is amorphous, and the UV-curable powder coatings with two components can be made up by mixing these two kinds of polyesters in different ratios. Experiments show that the introduction of semi-crystalline polyester into the coating will substantially improve the direct and reverse impact resistance and the crosshatch adhesion of the cured film while the other general properties of the UV-curable powder coatings remain excellent.
Preparation and Properties of in Situ Polymerization of Poly (vinyl Chloride)

Abstract:The in situ suspension polymerization of vinyl chloride was carried out in a system containing chlorinated polyethylene (CPE, the impact modifier), CaCO 3 (the filler), lubricants and thermal stabilizers to generate ready-to-processing PVC resins (RTUPVC). The effects of the various additives on the polymerization and the properties of the resins were investigated. The polymerization time until certain pressure drop was reduced with the addition of CPE and CaCO 3, however, the lubricant and thermal stabilizer retarded the polymerization. CPE improved the plasticity and both impact and tensile strengths. RTUPVC resin exhibited higher impact and tensile strengths than PVC/CPE blends with the same CPE content. The particle size of the resin was increased with increasing content of CPE, but not affected by other additives.

Abstract:Incorporating carboxyl group into the poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) resin can endow PVC with reactivity in some applications. In this work, poly(vinyl chloride)-co-poly(acrylic acid) random copolymer (PVCA) with low average number molecular weight (M (n), similar to 10 k) is synthesized by precipitation polymerization. By tuning acrylic acid dropping rate, the PVCA copolymer with much more uniform copolymer composition is obtained in comparison to all monomer-in process. Subsequently, the PVCA is utilized as a novel polymer modifier for the surface treatment of CaCO3 particles and its effect on the mechanical properties of obtained rigid PVC composites are evaluated systematically. As a result, the PVAC modified CaCO3 particles exhibit uniform dispersibility and excellent compatibility in PVC matrix. Additionally, the thermal stability is improved significantly owing to the calcium ions on the surface of CaCO3 particles, which scavenge the hydrogen chloride and retard the autocatalytic dehydrochlorination process. Impressively, it also has an enhancement both in tensile strength (ca. 46.4 MPa, and 119.8% elongation at break) and in impact strength (2.7 kJ m(-2)) in comparison to those modified by commercialized agents such as stearic acid and titanate ester. This work provides valuable insights for the preparation of vinyl chloride copolymers and opens a new application.
Study on the fusion properties of extruded foaming rigid PVC

Abstract:Melting fusion properites of extruded foaming PVC compounds under constant temperature and programmed increasing temperature conditions were studied using a Haake torque rheometer.The results showed that the fusion time and melt torque increased with the polymerization degree of PVC increasing;with the using amount of ACR processing aid and its molecular weight increasing,the fusion time decreased while the melt torque increased;ACR impact modifier could improve the fusion properties,which was similiar to that of ACR processing aid;the fusion properties was improved after CaCO 3 was added;the foaming agent ADC would slow down the fusion speed of PVC compound and increase melt viscosity,while foaming agent NaHCO 3 would sharply decrease its fusion speed.

Abstract:Poly(vinyl chloride)-g-poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PVC-g-PHEMA) copolymers were prepared by the aqueous suspension-swelling graft copolymerization process. The grafting of HEMA on PVC was confirmed by the infrared spectrum. The grafting degree increased with the increase of feeding mass fraction of HEMA, and a maximum grafting efficiency appeared at 10% mass fraction of HEMA in feed. The grafting degree and efficiency increased as partially dehydrochlorinated PVC was used. The intrinsic viscosity of graft copolymers increased slowly with the increase of the grafting degree of HEMA, and decreased at high grafting degrees. PVC-g-PHEMA copolymers exhibited a higher glass transition temperature (Tg) in the first DSC run than that in the second run, and Tg of graft copolymers increased as the grafting degree increased.

Abstract:In this communication, we report an easy method for introducing functional groups into polymer structures by successively reacting two different activated ester functionalities (pentafluorophenyl (PFP) ester and azlactone (AZ)) with different functional amine compounds. By exploiting the difference in reactivity of the two activated esters (PFP and AZ) toward different amino compounds, we demonstrate, for the first time, a selective modification of the different activated ester groups, thereby introducing functional groups to the polymer backbone in a controlled manner. Statistical and block copolymers of vinyl dimethyl azlactone (VDM) and pentafluorophenyl acrylate (PFPA), i.e.,(p(VDM-stat-PFPA)) and (p(VDM-block-PFPA)), were prepared using reversible addition-fragmentation transfer (RAFT) polymerization and subsequently modified using a library of amino compounds, yielding macromolecules with bespoke functionality. In additional work, the functional macromolecules were self-assembled into nanoparticles.

Abstract:PMMA/Poly(MMA-co-St-co-AN),PMSN,with core-shell structured copolymer was prepared by seeded emulsion polymerization.The monomer conversion is high and the particle diameter distribution monitored by dynamic light scattering is narrow.This results show that the particles grow without significantly secondary nucleation occurring and the latex particle size can be designed.Meanwhile,the intrinsic viscosity [η] for the soluble polymer of PMSN in butanone increases with the addition of allyl methacrylate (AMA).When PMSN is blended with low molecular weight poly(vinyl chloride)(PVC) resin,the melt equilibrium torque is increased with the increase of intrinsic viscosity of PMSN.Extrusion of rigid foam is the most demanding PVC process in terms of melt strength.Since the final targeted density can typically be a third of that of compact PVC,high melt strength is essential to retain gas bubbles in the melt and to avoid a collapse of the cells.Finally,the PMSN process aid synthesized meets the industrial requirements of rigid PVC foam.

Abstract:Ethylene propylene random copolymer (PP-R) is a thermoplastic with many desirable properties including low cost, good processability and balanced mechanical properties. However, some shortages, namely poor impact property, particularly at low temperature, and large thermal expansion coefficient at higher temperatures, limit its wide application. The polymerization and post-polymerization modification are two main categories in which its performance is improved. Recently, more attention was paid to the latter due to its cheapness, effectiveness, being handy and environmentally friendly in features. In this paper, current situation in research and development for post-polymerization modification, including blending, nano-composite filling, crystal-modification, etc., were reviewed in detail. Current problems in this field were also introduced.

Abstract:A series of 2-methyl-1,3-propanediol (MPO) modified azelaic acid and hexylene glycol copolyester (PHMAZ) plasticizers with varying contents were synthesized using a direct esterification melt polycondensation method, and their structures were characterized systematically. Analysis using infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy confirmed the synthesis of the designed copolyester structure. Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) tests indicated that the number average molecular weight of each copolyester sample ranged between 2000 and 3000. These copolyesters were used to plasticize polyvinyl chloride (PVC) resin, and the glass transition temperature of the plasticized PVC samples was tested using a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). Further characterization of the plasticizing effects was conducted using an electronic universal testing machine. The research results showed that as the content of MPO increased, the plasticizing effect of the copolyester initially increased and then decreased. Specifically, the copolyester containing 45% MPO, PHMAZ-45, demonstrated the best plasticizing effect on PVC, with the glass transition temperature of the plasticized PVC system around -35 °C, elongation at break at 908.4%, and a plasticizing efficiency of 254.5%. Additionally, this new type of copolyester plasticizer uses bio-based raw materials, exhibits excellent plasticizing effects, and the preparation process is stable and controllable. It holds promising potential to replace traditional volatile and toxic phthalate esters, presenting significant industrial application value.

Abstract:With PBA as the internal core,PMMA,PVC,PMMA/PVC as shell,ACR and PVC modified ACR were synthesized through seeded emulsion polymerization.TEM photographs clearly showed that neat ACR latex particles exhibited two layers core-shell structure,and after coated by PVC exhibited loose out layer.The phase structure,impact property,and fracture surface of different ACR and PVC blends were studied.It was found that when part or all of the PMMA in the shell were replaced by PVC,the ACR still dispersed well,the modified ACR still showed THE toughening efficiency.The broken surface of ACR modified PVC species exhibited a typical ductile fracture morphology.

Abstract:Acrylate(MeAA) was in situ prepared in chlorinated polyethylene(CPE) matrix through neutralization of hydroxide(oxide) and acrylic acid(AA) during mixing.The obtained CPE/MeAA compound was vulcanized with dicumyl peroxide(DCP).The in situ preparation and polymerization of MeAA were characterized and confirmed by the Fourier transform infrared(FTIR) analysis.The water-swelling properties and mechanical properties of the CPE/MeAA vulcanizates were studied.

Abstract:In this review, the developments achieved in the field of the acrylic ester resin with moderate polarity over the last few years were presented. Special attention is paid to the preparation techniques of resin network by changing the variable of the network synthesis. The internal structure of the resin beads can be controlled by parameters in the polymerization recipe such as mole fraction of cross-linker as well as the type and volume of diluent/ porogen/ pore generating solvent, an inert organic solvent, added to the monomer phase. In common, the pore size as well as surface area increases with the volume of porogen when the crosslink density is maintained constant. Increasing crosslink density increases the surface area and decreases the pore size at a given type and volume of porogen. Many applications of resin are offered.

Abstract:This review focused on the recent research progress in the modification of poly(lactic acid).The modification methods included direct polycondensation method,ring-opening polymerization,and chain-extending method.The molecular weight of poly(lactic acid) copolymers obtained by ring-opening polymerization was higher than that by direct polycondensation method.The chain-extending method could be used together with others.The application of modified poly(lactic acid) was reviewed,particularly in medical and packaging area.
Preparation and Properties of Glycerin Branched Polyesters as Plasticizer for PVC

Abstract:Polyesters with a branched structure were synthesized from adipic acid,aglycol and glycerin,and used in PVC as plasticizers.Using FTIR,TG,and GPC,the tensile properties,thermal stability,and extraction resistance,the PVC/polyester systems were studied.When triethylene glycol was used as the dibasic alcohol,the molecular weight,dispersion coefficient,and viscosity of the products were 4900g/mol,2.26,and 11.198Pa·s,respectively.The plasticized PVC samples showed low water absorbing capacity,high thermal stability,and good extraction resistance.

Influence of AA content, mass ratio, polymerization method and reaction temperature was investigated to optimize the polymerization process. The structure and composition of resin were analyzed by FT-IR and TGA.
