Abstract:Taking sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate(SDBS)as the template in the water solution,zinc hydroxystannate-coated calcium carbonate(ZHSCC-1)was prepared by biominetic synthesis method,and zinc hydroxystannate-coated calcium carbonate(ZHSCC-2)was also prepared in water solution without SDBS.Both ZHSCC-1 and ZHSCC-2 were studied as the flame retardant of PVC.The results showed that,when ZHSCC at the same addition level,not only the flame retardant and smoke suppressant effects of ZHSCC-1 were better than those of ZHSCC-2,but also the beneficial effects of the former were better than those of the latter.

Abstract:Mechanism of thermal degradation of PVC and the forming and inhibition of smoke during the burning of PVC were introduced.Influences of Al(OH)3,ammonium molybdate/Al(OH)3 and zinc borate/antimonic oxide on the fire-retardant and smoke-inhibition properties and the mechanical properties of PVC were introduced.The results showed that (1)the vertical combustibility of PVC-U could reach FV-0 grade even the adding amount of Al(OH)3 was only 15 parts,but the value had no improvement with the further increasement of Al(OH)3 using amount;(2)when the mass ratio of ammonium molybdate and Al(OH)3 was 30∶70,the maximum smoke density,smoke density and oxygen index were the best;(3)when the ratio of zinc borate and antimonic oxide was 50∶50, the fire-retardant and smoke-inhibition effect of PVC were the best.

Abstract:This review on polyvinylchloride (PVC) and dioxins collects, collates, and compares data from selected sources on the formation of polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), or in brief dioxins, in combustion and fires. In professional spheres, the incineration of PVC as part of municipal solid waste is seldom seen as a problem, since deep flue gas cleaning is required anyhow. Conversely, with its high content of chlorine, PVC is frequently branded as a major chlorine donor and spitefully leads to substantial formation of dioxins during poorly controlled or uncontrolled combustion and open fires. Numerous still ill-documented and diverse factors of influence may affect the formation of dioxins during combustion: on the one hand PVC-compounds represent an array of materials with widely different formulations; on the other hand these may all be exposed to fires of different nature and consequences. Hence, attention should be paid to PVC with respect to the ignition and development of fires, as well as attenuating the emission of objectionable compounds, such as carbon monoxide, hydrogen chloride, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and dioxins. This review summarises available dioxin emissions data, gathers experimental and simulation studies of fires and combustion tests involving PVC, and identifies and analyses the effects of several local factors of influence, affecting the formation of dioxins during PVC combustion.

Abstract:<p>As a versatile star product, poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) keeps active in our daily life all through since it was invented. However, the severe fire hazard and heavy smoke produced during combustion, particularly the extensively used flexible PVC products, have been puzzled manufacturers and researchers for ages. Over the last decade, multifarious flame retardants and smoke suppressants were developed for PVC materials. In this review, combined literature with the results based on the research from our group, recent emerged flame retardants and smoke suppressants for PVC are introduced. Meanwhile, the flame retardant mechanisms and experimental analysis results are described to understand the relationship between characters of flame retardants (including chemical compositions, structures or morphologies) and fire performance of the composites. The potential substitutes for traditional harmful flame retardant antimony trioxide are discussed aiming to the emphasis on increasing prominent environmental concerns. In particular, one section is dedicated to new approaches for the preparation of novel environmental friendly and high‐efficiency flame retardants. It is hoped that this review will not only summarize the new emerged flame retardants and smoke suppressants for PVC, but also provide the new trend to prompt sequent exploration in both academic research and industrial application.</p><p>This article is protected by copyright. The Flame Retardancy and Smoke Suppression Performance of Polyvinyl Chloride Composites with an Efficient Flame Retardant System

Abstract:Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is the most widely used general flame-retardant plastic worldwide; however, the large number of plasticizers added during processing significantly reduces its flame-retardant property. To prepare a new type of PVC material with highly efficient flame retardancy and smoke suppression, antimony trioxide (Sb2O3), talc powder, hydromagnesite, and zinc borate were added in different proportions to PVC to explore the flame-retardant properties, thermal weight, smoke density (Ds), and mechanical properties of the composite materials. Results showed that the limiting oxygen index value of each group was higher than 27% after adding talc powder, magnesite, and zinc borate to replace part of the Sb2O3. This value was within the refractory-grade level and indicated a good flame retardancy performance. The replacement effect was in line with the experimental expectation. The lowest Ds peak value was 656.4 when the flame retardants were added with 10 wt% Sb2O3, 50 wt% hydromagnesite, 20 wt% talc, and 20 wt% Zn3BO6. Compared with pure Sb2O3 as a flame retardant, the Ds peak value decreased by 46.7%. The thermogravimetric decomposition temperature of the composites in each group was generally higher than that of the group with pure Sb2O3 as a flame retardant, increasing by 45.3 °C. The thermal stability of the composites was improved, and the elongation at the break and tensile strength were 234.9% and 25.8 MPa, respectively, indicating good mechanical properties. The results showed that using compound flame retardants to replace most of the Sb2O3 is an effective technique for obtaining good flame retardancy and mechanical properties of PVC. This study, not only reduced the manufacturing cost of flame-retardant PVC, but also effectively reduced its smoke density and the time to reach the highest smoke density, which provided a research reference for the application and promotion of flame-retardant PVC.

Abstract:Poly(vinyl chloride)/hydrotalcite (PVC/HT) nanocomposites were prepared through vinyl chloride suspension polymerization in the presence of HT nanoparticles surface modified with alkyl phosphate (AP). The thermal stability, smoke emission and mechanical properties of PVC/HT nanocomposites were investigated. It was found that AP molecules were effectively absorbed by HT particles with no intercalation into the interlayer of HT. The dispersion morphologies of PVC/HT nanocomposites were observed by transmission electron microscopy showing that the majority of HT particles were dispersed in the PVC matrix in the nanoscale. The Congo Red measurement and thermogravimetric analysis showed that the thermal stability time, and the temperatures at 10% weight loss and at the maximum weight loss rate of PVC resins increased as the weight fraction of HT in the composite resins increased. The well-dispersed nano-sized HT showed an obvious smoke suppression effect on PVC. The maximum smoke density decreased about 1/3 and 1/2 when 2.5wt% and 5.3wt% nano-sized HT were incorporated into PVC, respectively. Furthermore, PVC/HT nanocomposites exhibited greater tensile strength and impact strength than the pristine PVC.

Improving the flame retardancy and smoke suppression of flexible PVC by incorporating zinc borate‐modified diantimony trioxide

Abstract:The properties and structure of flexible PVC by incorporating zinc borate (ZB)‐modified diantimony trioxide (Sb2O3) were investigated. The results of flame retardancy and smoke suppression testing indicate that there was an obvious maximum Limited oxygen index (LOI) value of PVC/20 wt.% ZB–Sb2O3 composites reached 37.5% and passed the UL 94 V‐0 rating. An obvious synergistic effect between ZB and Sb2O3 was observed by LOI, SDR, and TG. Moreover, remarkable decreases in the smoke density were observed when ZB–Sb2O3 was incorporated into PVC. In addition, the tensile strength and elongation at break of PVC/ZB–Sb2O3 composites was higher than PVC/Sb2O3 composites, and this ameliorative effect was mainly arising from the ZB–Sb2O3 nanoparticles, which reduced the degree of fatal defects on PVC. The addition of ZB and Sb2O3 greatly increased the amount of residual char and apparently improved the mechanical properties of PVC composites. According to scanning electron microscopy photographs of residual char, after thermal decomposition, there were many fragments linked to the condensed phase and the compact char layer. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy shows the residues char was composed of benzene ring, the flame retardants occurred and the condensed phase with significant interactions.

Abstract:Influences of nano-sized hydrotalcite (HT) on the thermal stability and smoke density of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) were investigated. PVC/HT nanocomposites were prepared via in-situ polymerization and subsequently melt-processing. HT particles were dispersed homogeneously in PVC matrix and in a nanometer scale. The thermal decomposition temperature and thermal stability time measured using Congo red method increases as the weight fraction of HT in composites increases. The well distributed nano-sized HT particles exhibites excellent smoke-suppression effect on PVC. Compared with the pure PVC, the maximum smoke densities of PVC/nano-HT decreases by 40% and 60% when the weight fraction of n-HT is 1.25% and 2.5% respectively.

Abstract:A series of chitosan-modified inorganic oxyacid salt flame retardants (IOS-CS) were synthesized and used as flame retardants to improve the fire resistance of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) composites while improving the mechanical properties of the materials. The thermal stability of the material was analyzed by TG test; the flame-retardant and smoke suppression properties were evaluated by limiting oxygen index (LOI) and cone calorimeter test, and the mechanical properties were analyzed by tensile test and impact test. The TG results showed that the addition of flame retardant can promote the early cross-linking decomposition of PVC composites, not only advance the decomposition temperature of the material but also promote the formation of char layer and increase the char residual content. LOI and cone calorimeter test results showed that stannate chitosan (Sn-CS) can improve flame retardant and smoke suppression more effectively than other samples. Compared with pure PVC, the addition of Sn-CS increased its LOI from 26.6 to 30.5% and reduced the total heat release value and total smoke release by 18.23% and 52.55%, respectively. At the same time, the addition of the flame retardants had no large deterioration effect on the mechanical properties of the material. The tensile properties of flame-retardant PVC were slightly reduced compared with pure PVC, and the impact resistance was even improved to some extent.

Abstract:Abstract The output of bio-based polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) has been growing rapidly with a substantial increase of developments both in academic and industrial research areas in the past decade, which is due to its water solubility, plasticity, and degradability. However, PVA is highly flammable with a limiting oxygen index of only 19% owning to its inherent macromolecular structure composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms. The demand for flame retardancy of PVA has been increased rapidly and is generally satisfied by introducing flame retardants via chemical grafting, physical blending, and coating. This review summarizes the flame retardants applied in PVA and their influence on the flammability and mechanical properties of PVA materials. The type of flame retardant additives and their application technologies for various PVA products are presented in terms of various PVA products, such as films, aerogel, fibers, foams, and bulk composites. The films dominate the whole research of flame retardant PVA materials owing to their widespread application. The fire performance and flame retardant mechanism are compared and discussed. Additionally, PVA acted as an assistant agent in some polymeric flame-retardant formulations is also discussed and reviewed.

Abstract:Research on fire retardant–treated wood and wood-based composites has been conducted in China for over two decades. Although many kinds of fire retardants for wood and wood-based composites have been studied, the focus is still mainly on compounds or mixtures containing phosphorus, nitrogen, and boron, which can be used in a water solution for solid wood impregnation. Fire-retardant treatment methods for wood-based panels are either pretreatment of veneers, fibers, particles, or strands before hot pressing or impregnation of waterproof panels with fire-retardant solutions. Though attempts have been made in laboratories and factories to mix the fire retardants with glues, it has proven very difficult to spray the glue smoothly and to deliver effective amounts of fire retardants during the manufacture of panels. The mechanisms of phosphorus–nitrogen–boron fire retardants have been investigated systematically. The results indicate that the phosphorus–nitrogen compounds and the boron compounds are highly synergistic in effective fire-retardant formulations. The catalytic charring effect of a fire retardant on wood is a key factor in its efficacy. A chemical fire-retardant mechanism for boric acid is also proposed.Research on fire retardants for wood–plastic composites has been attracting more attention in recent years; however, most results are preliminary because of the difficulty in identifying or formulating a fire-retardant system that is effective for both wood and plastics.Only preliminary research has been conducted on smoke suppression for wood; innovative efforts will be needed to conduct further research.

Abstract:Polylactide (PLA) derived from renewable resources has drawn great interests in packaging, electronics, and automotive fields because of its biodegradability, high mechanical strength, high transparency, and ease of processing. However, inherent flammability and heavy melt dripping exceedingly impede its real-world applications in the forgoing fields. The last decade has witnessed the development of a variety of eco-benign fire retardants for PLA, but to date there has been an urgent lack of a comprehensive yet critical review on this topic. Herein, three major categories of fire retardants, organic, inorganic, and inorganic/organic FRs are reviewed, and fire retardant and mechanical properties of their PLA materials are discussed. This review highlights some representative fire retardants and their modes of actions in PLA followed by performance comparisons. Some important practical applications of fire-retardant PLA also are reviewed. Finally, key challenges with current fire-retardant PLA materials are discussed and some design principles are proposed for creating fire-retardant and mechanically robust PLA materials.

Abstract:High flammability and dense smoke constitute the two major issues limiting the extensive application of flexible polyvinyl chloride (PVC) materials. Facing these issues, the anti-flammability and smoke suppression performances of flexible PVC materials with magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH) 2 ), antimony trioxide (Sb 2 O 3 ), and their mixtures were investigated, accompanied with the surface modification of Mg(OH) 2 using stearic acid. With 50 phr loading, modified Mg(OH) 2 endowed PVC matrix with better flame retardancy, smoke suppression, and mechanical properties compared to unmodified Mg(OH) 2 . The combination use of modified Mg(OH) 2 and Sb 2 O 3 can significantly enhance the flame retardancy and smoke suppression of PVC at the same time, unlike the standalone use of modified Mg(OH) 2 and Sb 2 O 3 . When PVC blended with 50 phr modified Mg(OH) 2 and 1 phr Sb 2 O 3 , the limiting oxygen index increased from 28.1% to 31.7%, the smoke density rating, peak heat release rate, and total smoke production decreased by 33%, 41%, and 40%, respectively. Moreover, the quality and compactness of char residues were noticeably improved compared with those of pure flexible PVC. Meanwhile, the flame retardants didn't obviously diminish the mechanical properties of PVC which benefited the practical applications of PVC material.

Abstract:Waterborne polyurethane (PU) flame retarding gum (I) was synthesized with a special technology by use of waterborne PU as the base material and the added flame-retardants and auxiliary agents. Zeta potential and TEM tests stated the waterborne PU gum absorbed and partially occluded the flame retardants, and the resulted I had good stability. The flame retarding finishing technology was optimized by the orthogonal experiments, and the piloting experiments were carried out in Hongshan Coating Factory, Xiaoshan. The results showed that the finished fabrics attained the high level of the standard fort flame retardancy and other properties.

Abstract:Due to the enhancement of people's environmental awareness, flame-retardant epoxy resin (EP) tends to be non-toxic, efficient, and multi-functional, and its development is systematic. At present, many new flame retardants or intrinsic modification methods reported in studies can effectively improve the flame retardability and thermal stability of EP. However, many aspects still need to be further improved. In this review, the flame-retardant mechanism and method of flame-retardant epoxy resins are briefly analyzed. The research progress of the flame-retardant modification of epoxy resin by physical addition and chemical reaction is summarized and discussed. Furthermore, the research trend of flame-retardant epoxy resin in the field of fire-protective coatings is discussed, and future problems in this field are put forward. This work may provide some new insights for the design of multi-functional integrated epoxy resin fireproof coatings.

Abstract:The amplified employment of rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) has accentuated the importance of its flame-retardant properties in stimulating demand. Thus, a compelling research report is essential to scrutinize the recent progression in the field of the flame retardancy and smoke toxicity reduction of RPUF. This comprehensive analysis delves into the conventional and innovative trends in flame-retardant (FR) systems, comprising reactive-type FRs, additive-type FRs, inorganic nanoparticles, and protective coatings for flame resistance, and summarizes their impacts on the thermal stability, mechanical properties, and smoke toxicity suppression of the resultant foams. Nevertheless, there are still several challenges that require attention, such as the migration of additives, the insufficient interfacial compatibility between flame-retardant polyols or flame retardants and the RPUF matrix, and the complexity of achieving both flame retardancy and mechanical properties simultaneously. Moreover, future research should focus on utilizing functionalized precursors and developing biodegradable RPUF to promote sustainability and to expand the applications of polyurethane foam.
