Abstract:Using sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate （SDBS） as a template in the mixed solution of glycol and water, zinc hydroxystannate-coated calcium carbonate （ZHSCC-1） was prepared. Zinc hydroxystannate-coated calcium carbonate （ZHSCC-2） was prepared in an aqueous solution without SDBS/glycol for comparison. Both ZHSCC-1 and ZHSCC-2 were studied as the flame retardant of PVC. XRD, SEM, and TG-DSC showed that zinc stannate was coated on CaCO3 surface and the product was thin hexagonal pieces with the size about 5 um. At the same loading, not only the flame retardancy and smoke suppressant effects, but also the tensile strength, elongation at break, and impact strength of ZHSCC-1 flame retarded PVC were better than those of ZHSCC-2 flame retarded system.

Abstract:Taking sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate(SDBS)as the template in the water solution,zinc hydroxystannate-coated calcium carbonate(ZHSCC-1)was prepared by biominetic synthesis method,and zinc hydroxystannate-coated calcium carbonate(ZHSCC-2)was also prepared in water solution without SDBS.Both ZHSCC-1 and ZHSCC-2 were studied as the flame retardant of PVC.The results showed that,when ZHSCC at the same addition level,not only the flame retardant and smoke suppressant effects of ZHSCC-1 were better than those of ZHSCC-2,but also the beneficial effects of the former were better than those of the latter.

Abstract:Poly(vinyl chloride)/hydrotalcite (PVC/HT) nanocomposites were prepared through vinyl chloride suspension polymerization in the presence of HT nanoparticles surface modified with alkyl phosphate (AP). The thermal stability, smoke emission and mechanical properties of PVC/HT nanocomposites were investigated. It was found that AP molecules were effectively absorbed by HT particles with no intercalation into the interlayer of HT. The dispersion morphologies of PVC/HT nanocomposites were observed by transmission electron microscopy showing that the majority of HT particles were dispersed in the PVC matrix in the nanoscale. The Congo Red measurement and thermogravimetric analysis showed that the thermal stability time, and the temperatures at 10% weight loss and at the maximum weight loss rate of PVC resins increased as the weight fraction of HT in the composite resins increased. The well-dispersed nano-sized HT showed an obvious smoke suppression effect on PVC. The maximum smoke density decreased about 1/3 and 1/2 when 2.5wt% and 5.3wt% nano-sized HT were incorporated into PVC, respectively. Furthermore, PVC/HT nanocomposites exhibited greater tensile strength and impact strength than the pristine PVC.

Abstract:Influences of nano-sized hydrotalcite (HT) on the thermal stability and smoke density of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) were investigated. PVC/HT nanocomposites were prepared via in-situ polymerization and subsequently melt-processing. HT particles were dispersed homogeneously in PVC matrix and in a nanometer scale. The thermal decomposition temperature and thermal stability time measured using Congo red method increases as the weight fraction of HT in composites increases. The well distributed nano-sized HT particles exhibites excellent smoke-suppression effect on PVC. Compared with the pure PVC, the maximum smoke densities of PVC/nano-HT decreases by 40% and 60% when the weight fraction of n-HT is 1.25% and 2.5% respectively.

Abstract:Dodecyl sulfonate-pillared hydrotalcite (HT-SDS) w as prepared through ion-exchange reaction, which was blended with PVC to prepare composites via both melting mixing and in situ suspension polymerization of vinyl chloride. TEM micrographs showed that the sizes of most hydrotalcite particles were greater than 100 nm in the composites prepared via melting mixing, while less than 100 nm and disperse d homogeneously via in situ polymerization, due to being exfoliated. The thermal stability of PVC composites improved with increasing HT-SDS contents. The compo s ites prepared via in situ polymerization possessed higher modulus, tensile and impact strengths than those of via melt mixing.

Abstract:Poly (vinyl chloride) PVC nano-hydrotalcite composites were obtained by processing PVC/nanohydrotalcite composite resins prepared by suspension polymerization of vinyl chloride in the presence of hydrotalcite. The morphology and mechanical properties of PVC/nano-hydrotalcite composites were investigated and compared with those of PVC/nano-hydrotalcite composites prepared by direct melt mixing of PVC and nano-hydrotalcite. It was shown that hydrotalcite particles were dispersed much more homogeneous in PVC composites prepared by the first method. In these composites hydrotalcite particles existed mainly as primary particles of nanoscales with no obvious aggregation. As a result, PVC composites prepared by the first method had better mechanical properties than those prepared by the second method. The tensile strength, Young's modulus and Charpy impact strength of PVC composite increased with increasing the content of nano-hydrotalcite in a range of less than 5 wt%. The thermal stability of PVC composite resin increased as the weight fraction of nano-hydrotalcite increased. The storage modulus and the loss modulus of PVC/nano-hydrotalcite composites were all slightly higher than those of the pristine PVC in the temperature region below and around the glass transition. tan delta and glass transition temperature of PVC/nanohydrotalcite composites were almost as same as those of the pristine PVC.

Abstract:Melting fusion properites of extruded foaming PVC compounds under constant temperature and programmed increasing temperature conditions were studied using a Haake torque rheometer.The results showed that the fusion time and melt torque increased with the polymerization degree of PVC increasing;with the using amount of ACR processing aid and its molecular weight increasing,the fusion time decreased while the melt torque increased;ACR impact modifier could improve the fusion properties,which was similiar to that of ACR processing aid;the fusion properties was improved after CaCO 3 was added;the foaming agent ADC would slow down the fusion speed of PVC compound and increase melt viscosity,while foaming agent NaHCO 3 would sharply decrease its fusion speed.

Abstract:Mechanism of thermal degradation of PVC and the forming and inhibition of smoke during the burning of PVC were introduced.Influences of Al(OH)3,ammonium molybdate/Al(OH)3 and zinc borate/antimonic oxide on the fire-retardant and smoke-inhibition properties and the mechanical properties of PVC were introduced.The results showed that (1)the vertical combustibility of PVC-U could reach FV-0 grade even the adding amount of Al(OH)3 was only 15 parts,but the value had no improvement with the further increasement of Al(OH)3 using amount;(2)when the mass ratio of ammonium molybdate and Al(OH)3 was 30∶70,the maximum smoke density,smoke density and oxygen index were the best;(3)when the ratio of zinc borate and antimonic oxide was 50∶50, the fire-retardant and smoke-inhibition effect of PVC were the best.

Progress in Rubber Plastics Recycling Technology

Abstract:Progress in Rubber, Plastics and Recycling Technology, Ahead of Print. In this study, ZnAlLa-maleate-LDHs was synthesized using the co-precipitation-hydrothermal method. The effects of aluminum-lanthanum ratio, co-precipitation time, hydrothermal time, and hydrothermal temperature on the crystal structure were investigated. As indicated by the result, the optimal condition was n (Al3+): n (La3+) = 10:1, the co-precipitation time reached 24 h, the hydrothermal time was 8 h, and the hydrothermal temperature reached 180°C. The effect of hydrotalcite on the thermal stability properties and plasticizing properties of PVC was analyzed. The result suggested that ZnAlLa-maleate-LDHs enhanced the thermal stability, plasticizing properties, and mechanical properties of PVC compared with ZnAlLa-CO3-LDHs. The layer spacing of hydrotalcite was increased with the introduction of maleic acid, such that the entry of Cl− into the interlayer guest was facilitated, and the decomposition of PVC was inhibited. Moreover, the long-term thermal stability mechanism was analyzed using FTIR before and after hydrochloric acid treatment. As revealed by the above result, the thermal stabilizer ZnAlLa-maleate-LDHs are capable of hindering the breakage of C-Cl bonds in PVC, inhibiting the formation of HCl, and playing a certain role in thermal stabilization.
The Flame Retardancy and Smoke Suppression Performance of Polyvinyl Chloride Composites with an Efficient Flame Retardant System

Abstract:Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is the most widely used general flame-retardant plastic worldwide; however, the large number of plasticizers added during processing significantly reduces its flame-retardant property. To prepare a new type of PVC material with highly efficient flame retardancy and smoke suppression, antimony trioxide (Sb2O3), talc powder, hydromagnesite, and zinc borate were added in different proportions to PVC to explore the flame-retardant properties, thermal weight, smoke density (Ds), and mechanical properties of the composite materials. Results showed that the limiting oxygen index value of each group was higher than 27% after adding talc powder, magnesite, and zinc borate to replace part of the Sb2O3. This value was within the refractory-grade level and indicated a good flame retardancy performance. The replacement effect was in line with the experimental expectation. The lowest Ds peak value was 656.4 when the flame retardants were added with 10 wt% Sb2O3, 50 wt% hydromagnesite, 20 wt% talc, and 20 wt% Zn3BO6. Compared with pure Sb2O3 as a flame retardant, the Ds peak value decreased by 46.7%. The thermogravimetric decomposition temperature of the composites in each group was generally higher than that of the group with pure Sb2O3 as a flame retardant, increasing by 45.3 °C. The thermal stability of the composites was improved, and the elongation at the break and tensile strength were 234.9% and 25.8 MPa, respectively, indicating good mechanical properties. The results showed that using compound flame retardants to replace most of the Sb2O3 is an effective technique for obtaining good flame retardancy and mechanical properties of PVC. This study, not only reduced the manufacturing cost of flame-retardant PVC, but also effectively reduced its smoke density and the time to reach the highest smoke density, which provided a research reference for the application and promotion of flame-retardant PVC.

Abstract:Polyvinyl chloride(PVC) resins modified by hydrotalcite(HT) and zinc stannate(ZnSnO4) were prepared via in-situ suspension polymerization.The dispersion of HT and ZnSnO4 particles in PVC matrix,and influences of HT and ZnSnO4 on the limited oxygen index(LOI) and smoke density of PVC plasticized with DOP were investigated.It showed that HT and ZnSnO4 particles are well dispersed in PVC matrix.The LOI decreases and smoke density of PVC increases as DOP content increases.As the amount of incorporated HT and ZnSnO4 increases,the LOI of plasticized PVC increases and the smoke density of plasticized PVC decreases.

Abstract:10-undecenonate intercalated hydrotalcite (LDH-U) were prepared by co-precipitation method and used to modified poly(vinyl chloride)(PVC). Effect of LDH-U on the thermal stability of PVC/LDH-U composites prepared by in-situ suspension polymerization and melt blending was investigated. The results from Congro red, TGA and dynamic thermal stability measurement showed that the thermal stability of PVC is decreased as LDH-U composed with PVC by direct melt blending, while the thermal stability of PVC/LDH-U composite prepared by in-situ polymerization method is better than unmodified PVC, and increased with the increased weight fraction of LUD-U. This is caused by the copolymerization of 10-undecenonate with vinyl chloride in in-situ polymerization.

Abstract:A series of high molecular weight PVC (HMW-PVC) resin was synthesized by suspenion process at various temperatures and compounded to prepare plasticized HMW-PVC. Plasticized HMW-PVC is physically crosslinked by microcrystallites and chain entanglements. The molecular weight and degree of crystallinity of PVC resin increase with decrease of polymeri-zation temperature. More dense physical crosslinking networks are formed in plasticized PVC with the decrease of polymerization temperature of PVC resin. Plasticized HMW-PVC exhibits thermal reversible processability, but the gelation temperature and melt viscosity increase with increasing physical crosslinking density. Physical crosslinking also has great effects on the mechanical properties of plasticized HMW-PVC. The compression set and deformation decrease as molecular weight and crystallinity of PVC resin increase, but the softening temperature and tensile strength increase. The crosslinking network of plasticized HMW-PVC is more similar to the dissociable network of gels than to the permanent network of crosslinked rubber and is not stable under stretching at high stress.

Abstract:Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to investigate the crystallinity of crude PVC powders and annealed PVC compounds. Crude PVC powder exhibited a broad crystallite fusion endotherm ranged from 100 degrees C to 220 degrees C. High degree of polymerization of PVC showed high degree of crystallinity both for powder and annealed sample under the same annealing conditions. Annealing conditions (time and temperature) had large effects on recrystallization behavior of PVC. The crystallinity of PVC decreased with increasing of DOP plasticizer content in PVC compounds, and lead to decrease of modulus and increase of average molecular weight between physical crosslinks.
Modification Research of Nanometer TiO2 Coating and Its Effect on Properties of PVC

Abstract:The silane coupling agent KH–570 modification process of nanometer TiO2 was discussed. The optimum technological conditions for modification obtained by orthogonal experiment is :pH value of dispersion=7.5,the volume of coupling agent for 7 mL,ultrasonic time 40 min. Sedimentation experiment and granularity analysis results show that the nanometer TiO2 oil-wet performance and agglomeration of particles are significantly improved under the condition of the modification. Modified and unmodified nanometer TiO2 were put into PVC matrix to make PVC/nano TiO2 composite and the ultraviolet shielding performance tests and tensile tests were carried out. The results show that the material UV shielding performance and mechanical properties of adding modified nanometer TiO2 composites are significantly higher than that of adding unmodified nano TiO2. When the adding quantity of modified TiO2 particle is 3%,the UV shielding and mechanical properties of PVC/nano TiO2 composite are optimum.

Abstract:以N1,N3-双(水杨醛)缩二乙烯三胺(H2L)和二水合乙酸锌为原料合成了一种含锌产物Zn-I(Zn3(HL)2Ac4,HAc=乙酸)。静态老化和脱氯化氢实验研究表明:在延缓聚氯乙烯(PVC)试样初期变色和锌烧方面,Zn-I和硬脂酸钙(Ca St2)的复合体系较硬脂酸锌(Zn St2)和Ca St2体系具有明显的优势。并且,在含Ca St2/含锌组分质量比从1.5/0到0/1.5范围内,随着Zn-I在复合体系中的质量份比例升高,PVC试样锌烧时间变短的趋势相比于Zn St2明显较缓。热分析动力学计算结果表明:随着Zn-I质量份比例升高,PVC样品的热分解活化能提高。
Preparation and Property of Silane-crosslinked PVC

Abstract:The hydrolytic crosslinking behavior of vinyl chloride/vinyl triethoxysilane (VC/VTES) copolymers synthesized by suspension copolymerization and the property of crosslinked PVC were investigated in this paper.It was found that VC/VTES copolymers with very low gel content could be prepared by suspension copolymerization in the presence of pH adjustor.VC/VTES copolymers were partially crosslinked after processing,and the gel content increased with the increase of VTES content in the copolymer.The gel contents subsequently increased after the immersion of processed samples in water,indicating the occurrence of the hydrolytic crosslinking.The mechanical properties at high temperature and heat deformation resistance of PVC were improved after silane crosslinking.

Abstract:High flammability and dense smoke constitute the two major issues limiting the extensive application of flexible polyvinyl chloride (PVC) materials. Facing these issues, the anti-flammability and smoke suppression performances of flexible PVC materials with magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH) 2 ), antimony trioxide (Sb 2 O 3 ), and their mixtures were investigated, accompanied with the surface modification of Mg(OH) 2 using stearic acid. With 50 phr loading, modified Mg(OH) 2 endowed PVC matrix with better flame retardancy, smoke suppression, and mechanical properties compared to unmodified Mg(OH) 2 . The combination use of modified Mg(OH) 2 and Sb 2 O 3 can significantly enhance the flame retardancy and smoke suppression of PVC at the same time, unlike the standalone use of modified Mg(OH) 2 and Sb 2 O 3 . When PVC blended with 50 phr modified Mg(OH) 2 and 1 phr Sb 2 O 3 , the limiting oxygen index increased from 28.1% to 31.7%, the smoke density rating, peak heat release rate, and total smoke production decreased by 33%, 41%, and 40%, respectively. Moreover, the quality and compactness of char residues were noticeably improved compared with those of pure flexible PVC. Meanwhile, the flame retardants didn't obviously diminish the mechanical properties of PVC which benefited the practical applications of PVC material.

Abstract:Chemical crosslinked poly(vinyl chloride) (C-PVC) was synthesized by vinyl chloride suspension polymerization in the presence of diallyl phthalate (DAP) and plasticized to prepare poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) materials. The chemical crosslinking and physical crosslinking structure in chemical crosslinked PVC-TPE were investigated. It showed that the gel fraction and the crosslinking density of gel increased as the feed concentration of DAP increased. C-PVC prepared by VC/DAP copolymerization was lightly crosslinked as compared with irradiation crosslinked PVC. Physical entanglements would greatly influence the crosslinking density of gel when the gel fraction was high. Chemical crosslinking had little influence on the recrystallization behavior of PVC. A structure model of chemical crosslinked PVC-TPE was proposed, in which chemical networks acted with physical networks cooperatively. It also showed that chemical crosslinking and physical crosslinking influenced the processability and mechanical properties of chemical crosslinked PVC-TPE cooperatively. Although the processability of PVC-TPE deteriorated with chemical crosslinking, the dimension stability and elasticity of PVC-TPE were improved as the permanent chemical networks were introduced.
