Abstract:The polymer industry in China has developed rapidly over the past 30 years, which can be greatly attributed to the active R&D conducted by Chinese scholars in polymer reaction engineering (PRE) and their cultivation of high level talents. The research focus on PRE in China has shifted from the application development to both applied and fundamental research at present. The PRE researchers closely collaborate with the enterprises and the world leading scholars. The research objective has been evolved from optimizing efficiency of polymerization processes to precise control of the structures of polymer chains and primary aggregates. This essay summarizes the history, characteristics, and latest progresses of the PRE research in China, with emphasis on the research activities at Zhejiang University.

Abstract:Controlled radical polymerization (CRP) represents an important advancement in polymer chemistry. It allows synthesis of polymers with well-controlled chain microstructures. Reactor engineering is essential in bringing lab-scale chemistry to industrial realization. This paper reviews the research progress in reactor engineering of CRP, namely, atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer radical polymerization (RAFT), and nitroxide-mediated or stable free radical polymerization (NMP or SFRP). Research activities in semi-batch reactors, tubular reactors, and continuous stirred-tank reactors (CSTR) of both homogeneous (bulk and solution) and heterogeneous (emulsion, mini-emulsion, heterogeneous catalyst, etc.) CRP systems are summarized. Typical examples are selected and discussed in detail. Perspectives on the current status and future development are also provided.

Abstract:Ionic liquids(ILs) are non-volatile,non-flammable and easy-to-recycle organic salts and therefore are viewed as potential replacements of volatile organic compounds(VOCs) and used as green solvents and efficient reaction media to reduce/eliminate environmental problems in chemistry and process industries.In recent years,ILs have been successful used in polymerization reactions not only to diminish the problems resulted from VOCs but also to recycle catalysts and purify polymeric products,to more efficiently control polymerization process and the structure and properties of resultant polymers,and even to directly catalyze polymerizations.This article reviews recent advances in polymerization conducted in ionic liquid media.

Abstract:The product from free radical and coordination polymerization generally are homopolymer or random copolymer with broad molecular weight distribution.In the past two decades,the breakthroughs in controlled/living radical and coordination polymerization and shuttling polymerization make it possible to use almost all vinyl monomers,particularly those cheap monomers,to produce more complex chain structures like di-,tri-block copolymer and gradient copolymers.With rational design,these copolymers might be high performance and high added value synthetic materials.The mechanisms and the up-to-date progress of these polymerization methods were introduced,and their possible applications were discussed.

Abstract:Cover: The graft polymerization of vinyl acetate (VAc) from poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) was investigated by both experiments and modeling work. The graph on the left of the cover picture illustrates the graft copolymer molecular weight as determined by definitive calculation, GPC with PVAc or PEG calibration, and the model prediction. Using the correlated Arrhenius expression of the chain transfer constant to PEG(C PEG ), the graft copolymer molecular weights at various temperatures was predicted in the figure on the right. Controlled/Living Radical Polymerization of Acrylonitrile: an Overview

Abstract:Controlled/living radical polymerization is a versatile method,by which the molecular weight,polydispersity and architectures of polymers can be controlled effectively.Polyacrylonitrile(PAN) and its copolymers have been widely used in many fields due to their excellent fiber-and membrane-forming properties.This review highlights the progress in synthesis of PAN and its block copolymers through controlled/living radical polymerization by addressing the mechanisms of nitroxide-mediated polymerization(NMP),iniferter,atom transfer radical polymerization(ATRP) and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer(RAFT) polymerization.It also offers some suggestions as to future development and remaining challenges in this topical area.

Abstract:The chain transfer and termination of vinyl acetate offen occur in polymerizatoin,so living/controlled radical polymerization of vinyl acetate is a large chanllenge.Different controlled radical polymerizations of vinyl acetate were summarized in this paper.Among these methods,RAFT mediated by xanthate and dithiocarbamate,cobalt mediated radical polymerization reallize the living/controlled radical polymerization of vinyl acetate.

Abstract:Technology progress in industrial hydrochlorination of acetylene to vinyl chloride is reviewed,such as fixed bed,fluidized bed and compound reactor.The advantages and disadvantages of these technologies and their catalysts are discussed.The compound reactor technology that combine the advantages of fixed bed and fluidized bed technologies shows good theoretical and practical feasibilities,which will be focused in the future research and industrialization.

Abstract:The effects of monomer ratio, initiator concentration, polymerization temperature and conversion on the composition and molecular weight of vinylidene chloride (VDC)-acrylonitrile (AN) copolymer, and rate of reaction were studied. A kinetic rate model of suspension copolymerization is suggested. The dependency of copolymer composition on AN concentration in the water phase was discussed. A model of molecular weight as a function of polymerization temperature and initiator concentration was proposed.

Abstract:The construction of complex polymer architectures with well-defined topology, composition and functionality has been extensively explored as the molecular basis for the development of modern polymer materials. The unique reaction kinetics of free-radical polymerization leads to the concurrent formation of crosslinks between polymer chains and rings within an individual chain and, thus, free-radical (co)polymerization of multivinyl monomers provides a facile method to manipulate chain topology and functionality. Regulating the relative contribution of these intermolecular and intramolecular chain-propagation reactions is the key to the construction of architecturally complex polymers. This can be achieved through the design of new monomers or by spatially or kinetically controlling crosslinking reactions. These mechanisms enable the synthesis of various polymer architectures, including linear, cyclized, branched and star polymer chains, as well as crosslinked networks. In this Review, we highlight some of the contemporary experimental strategies to prepare complex polymer architectures using radical polymerization of multivinyl monomers. We also examine the recent development of characterization techniques for sub-chain connections in such complex macromolecules. Finally, we discuss how these crosslinking reactions have been engineered to generate advanced polymer materials for use in a variety of biomedical applications.

Abstract:The reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer radical polymerization (RAFT) of vinyl acetate (VAc) were conducted in ethyl acetate using four xanthates with different Z group as the chain transfer agents. Results showed that the chemical structure of xanthate,the ratio of xanthate to initiator,and the monomer mass fraction had prominent effect on the RAFT radical polymerization of VAc. When Z group of the xanthates was 4-methoxyphenoxy,the RAFT polymerization of VAc was completely inhibited in presence of ethyl acetate in 720 minutes. The reason may be that the center is stablized by the electronic transfer complex between VAc chain end and the aromatic group in end of polymer. When Z groups of the xanthates were methoxy,ethoxy,or isopropoxy,the RAFT radical polymerization of VAc can proceed in a living /controlled way. The number-average relative molecular mass of polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) increased linearly with the conversion,and the relative molecular mass distribution index of PVAc was lower than 1.4.

Abstract:Radical polymerization (RP) of multivinyl monomers (MVMs) provides a facile solution for manipulating polymer topology and has received increasing attention due to their industrial and academic significance. Continuous efforts have been made to understand their mechanism, which is the key to regulating materials structure. Modelling techniques have become a powerful tool that can provide detailed information on polymerization kinetics which is inaccessible by experiments. Many publications have reported the combination of experiments and modelling for free radical polymerization (FRP) and reversible-deactivation radical polymerizations (RDRP) of MVMs. Herein, a minireview is presented for the most important modelling techniques and their applications in FRP/RDRP of MVMs. This review hopes to illustrate that the combination of modelling and wet experiments can be a great asset to polymer researchers and inspire new thinking for the future MVMs experiment optimization and product design.

Abstract:Controlled/"Living" radical polymerization (CRP) of vinyl acetate (VAc) via nitroxide-mediated polymerization (NMP), organocobalt-mediated polymerization, iodine degenerative transfer polymerization (DT), reversible radical addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT), and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) is summarized and compared with the ATRP of VAc catalyzed by copper halide/2,2' :6',2 "-terpyridine. The new copper catalyst provides the first example of ATRP of VAc with clear mechanism and the facile synthesis of poly(vinyl acetate) and its block copolymers.
