Abstract:The heat resistant properties of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) are very poor, so that PVC resin can not be used in many cases. In order to enhance the heat resistant properties of PVC, N-phenyl maleimide (PMI) and/or acrylonitrile (AN) monomer units were introduced into the PVC chain to prepare heat resistant VC-PMI copolymer and VC-PMI-AN terpolymer by suspension polymerization. The Vicat softening point (VSP), glass transition temperature ( T-g), dynamical mechanical behavior and morphological structure of heat resistant VC-PMI copolymer and VC-PMI-AN terpolymer were studied in detail. The results showed that the VSP and T-g of the heat resistant PVC increased with the content of PMI or AN. When the content of the heat resistant monomer units was high than a critical value, the increasing rate of the heat resistant properties was changed, two tandelta peaks appeared, and a dual phase continuity structure, named as "stiff chain frame work", was formed. On the basis of these experimental phenomena,a new concept that the "stiff chain frame network" can increase the heat resistant properties of the heat resistant PVC was presented. A heat resistant mechanism was discussed and its physical model was proposed also. The results of dynamic mechanical analysis revealed that the polymers had only one tandelta peak in most cases, however, two tandelta peaks appeared with increasing of the content of AN. The miscibility of the heat resistant agent (VC-PMI copolymer or VC-PMI-AN terpolymer) and PVC will influence the formation of the "stiff chain frame network".

Abstract:Vinyl chloride/ N-phenylmaleimide copolymer ( VC/PMI) and vinyl chloride/ N-phenylmaleimide/ acrylonitrile terpolymer (VC/PMI/AN) were synthesized in the suspension copolymerization process for improving the heat resistance of poly( vinyl chloride) PVC) This paper emphasized on the studies on the characterization of the heat resistant properties of these three co) polymers mainly by means of dynamic mechanical experiment with the change of storage modulus ( E'), change rate of E' with temperature and mechanical loss factor ( tandelta) near the glass transition. The Vicat softening point ( VSP) was also tested supplementally for comparison. The lower the change rate of E' with temperature is, the higher the heat resistance of VC/PMI and VC/PMI/AN will be. The effects of the amount of PMI and AN in the recipes of copolymerization on the change rate of E' with temperature, tandelta and VSP were also investigated. The results show that the increase of the amount of PMI will increase the rigidity of the backbone of the copolymer chain so as to improve the heat resistance. On the other hand, the introduction of AN into the copolymer will give more uniform distribution of PMI unit or segment in the backbone, and thus improves the heat resistance of the copolymer further. It is discovered that there are two peaks of mechanical loss or two glass transition temperatures of VC/PMI/AN copolymerization product. It may be interpreted from the higher reactivities of PMI and AN than VC. During the copolymerization process of VC, PMI and AN, the more active PMI and AN will copolymerize more rapidly and will consume entirely at conversion of about 45% similar to 50%. Thereafter, VC continues to homopolymerize to form PVC homopolymer until a final conversion of 85%. Actually, the final product is a mixture of VC/PMI/AN terpolymer and homo-PVC, showing two T(g)s.

Abstract:The in situ suspension polymerization of vinyl chloride was carried out in a system containing chlorinated polyethylene (CPE, the impact modifier), CaCO 3 (the filler), lubricants and thermal stabilizers to generate ready-to-processing PVC resins (RTUPVC). The effects of the various additives on the polymerization and the properties of the resins were investigated. The polymerization time until certain pressure drop was reduced with the addition of CPE and CaCO 3, however, the lubricant and thermal stabilizer retarded the polymerization. CPE improved the plasticity and both impact and tensile strengths. RTUPVC resin exhibited higher impact and tensile strengths than PVC/CPE blends with the same CPE content. The particle size of the resin was increased with increasing content of CPE, but not affected by other additives.

Abstract:A new type of rigid PVC compound with higher toughness and higher heat resistance was prepared by using a new type of PVC modifier, ultrafine full-vulcanized powdered rubber (UFPR). The UFPRs used in this paper were butadiene nitrile UFPR-1 (NBR-UFPR-1) with particle size of about 150nm and butadiene nitrile UFPR-2 (NBR-UFPR-2) with particle size of about 90nm. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) showed that glass transition temperature (Tg) of PVC in compounds increased from 77.52°C of neat PVC to 82.37 and 85.67°C, while the notched impact strengths increased from 3.1kJ/m2 of neat PVC to 5.2, 5.5kJ/m2, respectively. It can be found that both Tg and toughness of PVC have been improved simultaneously, and the smaller the particle size of NBR-UFPRs, the higher the Tg and the impact strength. The property could be attributed to larger interface and more interfacial interaction between NBR-UFPRs and PVC matrix. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that NBR-UFPRs could be well dispersed in PVC matrix.

Study on the fusion properties of extruded foaming rigid PVC

Abstract:Melting fusion properites of extruded foaming PVC compounds under constant temperature and programmed increasing temperature conditions were studied using a Haake torque rheometer.The results showed that the fusion time and melt torque increased with the polymerization degree of PVC increasing;with the using amount of ACR processing aid and its molecular weight increasing,the fusion time decreased while the melt torque increased;ACR impact modifier could improve the fusion properties,which was similiar to that of ACR processing aid;the fusion properties was improved after CaCO 3 was added;the foaming agent ADC would slow down the fusion speed of PVC compound and increase melt viscosity,while foaming agent NaHCO 3 would sharply decrease its fusion speed.

Abstract:Diagrammatic sketch of of impact property and toughening mechanism. Rigid polyvinylchloride (PVC) is widely used in various fields, but its low impact strength at low temperature limits its deep application in some cold regions. This work utilizes polycarbonate‐polydimethylsiloxane block copolymer (PC‐b‐PDMS) to toughen PVC. PDMS segment has extremely low glass transition temperature (−126°C) and PC segment has a good compatibility with PVC, which proved by the Fourier transform infrared and dynamic mechanical thermal results. For verifying toughening effect of PC‐b‐PDMS, the impact behavior at 23°C, 0°C and −30°C of PVC/PC‐b‐PDMS blends is investigated. The impact strength of modified PVC increases from 2.09 to 95.00 kJ·m−2 at 23°C, and the significant brittle‐ductile transition occurs at 10 phr PC‐b‐PDMS. At −30°C, 25 phr PC‐b‐PDMS makes brittle‐ductile transition appear and impact strength increased by 17 times. According to impact‐fractured morphology, PDMS acts as stress concentrator in PVC/PC‐b‐PDMS and produces a lot of cavities, crazes, and shear bands to consume impact energy, exhibiting good toughening effect. Overall, the PC‐b‐PDMS with excellent toughening effect is a promising alternative to traditional toughening agents, showing great promising application prospects in low‐temperature toughening of the rigid PVC products.

Abstract:It is necessary to modify polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) before using it as separation membrane because of its excessive swelling. In this paper,modification methods of PVA are reviewed,including crosslinking, grafting,blending,hybridization and substitution;their advantages and disadvantages are listed;and some comments are given for problems in modification methods. The application of modified PVA membrane is presented in detail. The development and application of PVA pervaporation membrane with excellent hydrophilicity and PVA membrane with high conductivity and low methanol permeability for fuel cell are prospected,respectively.

Abstract:As the second largest plastic in the world, PVC has good performance and wide applications. However, due to the unstable structure, PVC is easy to be thermally degraded during processing. Therefore, PVC thermal stabilizer is very important for PVC production. After decades of development, PVC thermal stabilizers have entered a bottleneck period of slow development. In this perspective paper, we systematically summarized the challenges faced by PVC thermal stabilizers, including common thermal stabilizers, new thermal stabilizers, cost effective additives, and mechanisms of thermal stabilizers. We also made suggestions on the perspective of various types of thermal stabilizers. In particular, the importance of quantum chemical calculation in studying the mechanism of PVC thermal stabilizers is emphasized. Thermal stabilizers are essential for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) processing. It is the emergence of thermal stabilizers that made PVC's applications migrate from laboratory to large‐scale industrial use. Herein we overview the development status of some traditional thermal stabilizers including lead salt, metal soaps, and organotin along with relatively newer thermal stabilizers such as organic thermal stabilizers and metal alkoxides. Taking into consideration the high market demand, opportunities for cost‐effective additives for thermal stabilizers are also briefly discussed. Finally, with the recent shift in focus on thermal stabilizer synthesis and their performance characterization but neglecting mechanical property testing and verification, we put forward application prospect of quantum chemical calculation for the development of PVC thermal stabilizers.

Abstract:Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) resin was filled with unm odified nano-CaCO 3 and nano-CaCO 3 coated with poly(methyl methacrylate) ( PMMA), whose fusion and mechanical properties were investigated. It found that t he equilibrium torque and melt temperature of PVC increased as the fillers intro duced. PVC filled with coated nano-CaCO 3 possessed greater impact and tensile strengths than those with unmodified nano-CaCO 3, with the impact strength of PVC with coated nano-CaCO 3 being 1.94 times higher. SEM micrographs of impac t samples showed that nano-CaCO 3 particles dispersed more homogeneously in PV C matrix without bigger aggregates when coated with PMMA.

Abstract:The silane coupling agent KH–570 modification process of nanometer TiO2 was discussed. The optimum technological conditions for modification obtained by orthogonal experiment is :pH value of dispersion=7.5,the volume of coupling agent for 7 mL,ultrasonic time 40 min. Sedimentation experiment and granularity analysis results show that the nanometer TiO2 oil-wet performance and agglomeration of particles are significantly improved under the condition of the modification. Modified and unmodified nanometer TiO2 were put into PVC matrix to make PVC/nano TiO2 composite and the ultraviolet shielding performance tests and tensile tests were carried out. The results show that the material UV shielding performance and mechanical properties of adding modified nanometer TiO2 composites are significantly higher than that of adding unmodified nano TiO2. When the adding quantity of modified TiO2 particle is 3%,the UV shielding and mechanical properties of PVC/nano TiO2 composite are optimum.
