Abstract:Polymeric positive temperature coefficient(PTC)composites have been widely used in making serf-regulating heater,current protection devices and microswitches sensors.The objective of this paper is to provide an all-around re- search progress on the conduction mechanism of the PTC effect for conducting polymeric composites.The key factors that influence the properties of the PTC composite,such as matrix material,kinds of conductive fillers and processing technol- ogy are also discussed.Some new insights in this field are put forward simultaneously.It is believed that the research of high switch temperature and amorphous polymeric PTC composites should be stressed in the future.In addition,the tech- nology with more effective surface modification to fillers is expected to be developed for the purpose of improving the mi- erostructure of filler-matrix interaction in the composites.

Abstract:<p>Conductive polymer composites with positive temperature coefficient (PTC) effect have gained intensive attention for the potential application in the smart heating field. The PTC reproducibility is significantly essential to guarantee the security and utility of PTC composites. Regrettably, during the repeated temperature cycles, the irreversible self‐aggregation of conductive filler and the random reconstruction of conductive network lead to unsatisfactory performance of PTC reproducibility. Extensive efforts have been conducted to address this issue by strategies, including modification of fillers, cross‐linking of a polymer matrix, hybrids of fillers, and application of binary polymer matrix. Nevertheless, there are very limited reviews about this issue. In this review, the recent advances in fabricating PTC composites with the enhanced PTC reproducibility have been systematically summarized. Meanwhile, the current challenges and future prospects of PTC composite are also presented. We hope that this review will provide some inspirations for designing PTC materials of long‐term performance for commercial applications.</p>

Abstract:The latest research developments in polymer-based PTC composites filled with carbon series dispersion as a conductive filler agent are reviewed. Modification of polymer basal body and carbon series conductive filler by grafting and blending is the main direction of current research. We believe that adding suitable metal series conductive filler to composites of carbon series/polymer may help improve PTC strength and stability of composites.

Abstract:Conductive polymer composites (CPCs) with a positive temperature coefficient (PTC) have received considerable attention in the intelligent electric heating field due to their low cost, chemical stability, flexibility, and formability compared to conventional inorganic ceramic PTC composites. To fabricate high-performance PTC composites for application, considerable efforts have been made to improve the overall PTC performance of CPCs in both academia and industry. However, few reviews are focusing on the systematic summary and discussion regarding the research strategies to improve the PTC performance of CPCs. In this review, the conductive mechanism and PTC effect mechanism of CPCs with the PTC effect are first summarized. Then, the research strategies to regulate the PTC performance of CPCs are systematically reviewed in terms of the polymer matrix, conductive fillers, and preparation processes. CPCs with a crystalline polymer and an amorphous polymer as the matrix are reviewed separately, especially for the former due to their current widespread application in PTC composites. Meanwhile, the various research strategies for improving the PTC performance are analyzed and summarized. The current challenges and future outlook in this field are also discussed. The research strategies reviewed here for improving the PTC performance of CPCs can provide a comprehensive guide for researchers seeking high-performance PTC composites.

Abstract:Pyroresistive polymer composites are smart materials with great promise in numerous fields of electronic devices, including temperature and strain sensors, self-regulating heating, and over-current/over-temperature protective devices. However, the operational window of these materials is limited by the phase transition temperatures of the polymer matrix and the brittleness of the composites. Herein, a conductive polymer composite based on a co-polyester thermoplastic elastomer reinforced with graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) was developed, which exhibits a positive temperature coefficient (PTC) switching temperature of 200 °C. This system shows a more gradual increase in resistivity with temperature and a less pronounced drop in resistivity past the critical transition temperature than other PTC composites. Moreover, Joule heating experiments revealed the ability to regulate at a predefined maximum temperature (within 150 – 200 °C), tuneable through parameters such as filler concentration, applied voltage and thermal boundary conditions, as also demonstrated by multiphysics simulations. Due to the more gradual PTC curve, this composite can produce steady state heating far below the PTC peak, unlike almost all other PTC materials: a unique advantage for self-regulating heating devices as the polymer is not in a melt state; reducing polymer degradation, filler mobility and increasing safety margin before onset of NTC behaviour.

Abstract:Polymer based PTC (positive temperature coefficient) composites are of special interest since they have great potential in temperature sensitive devices. In order to obtain a reproducible PTC composite with acceptable PTC intensity, the effects of processing conditions and filler treatment with nitric acid and titanate coupling agents on room temperature resistivity, PTC intensity, and melt viscosity of carbon black filled low density polyethylene composites have been described and discussed in the present paper. The results show that interfacial effect is a key factor influencing the processability and ultimate material performance, which can be tailored in various ways.

Abstract:Polymer PTC (positive temperature coefficient) materials with low switching temperature point are important for many electronic devices since the electronic devices usually work under room temperature range (0-40 degrees C). The desired polymer PTC materials for the application in thermal control of flexible electronics should also include room-temperature switching temperature, low room-temperature resistivity, good mechanical flexibility and adaptive thermal control performances. This work designed two new types of PTC materials with roomtemperature switching temperature and excellent mechanical properties. They are prepared by mixing the semi-crystalline polymer EVA with low melting temperature (Tm) with the amorphous polymer (PS or PVAc) with low glass transition temperature (Tg), while the low-cost graphite is selected as conductive filler. The PTC materials were obtained with low switching temperature point (<30 degrees C) and low room temperature resistivity (102 omega m), high PTC repeatability and flexibility, short heating response time and good adaptive thermal control performances.

Abstract:This study provides a concise overview of the latest developments in multifunctional thermally conductive polymer composites (TCPCs). Drawing from the current state of research, the study elucidates the mechanisms that underpin thermal conductivity in polymers and their composites. It further delineates the structure-property relationships of TCPCs, focusing on their modulus, resilience, and orientation. Concurrently, this work delves into the principles and structural design of TCPCs endowed with self-healing capabilities, electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, and electrical insulation characteristics. In particular, it outlines design strategies for imparting self-healing features to TCPCs and explores the interplay between thermal conductivity and self-healing efficacy. The principles of EMI shielding are clarified, along with the primary structural variants of TCPCs possessing EMI shielding attributes. Additionally, the paper addresses the insulative treatments applied to fillers within composites to enhance their electrical insulation. It concludes with a brief exposition of applications spanning electronic packaging, batteries, aerospace, LEDs, and flexible&stretchable electronics, to sensors. The aim of this review is to provide fresh insights for researchers intent on devising TCPCs with integrated self-healing, electromagnetic shielding, and electrical insulation functionalities, and to articulate strategies for optimizing the thermal conductivity coefficient (λ) alongside these attributes.

Abstract:Thermal transport performance of polymers and polymer composites has been widely studied as electrical insulating encapsulations for the many applications in microelectronics, power electronic devices, and high voltage power equipment. In fact, high-temperature stability for insulating materials is also an essential parameter for some certain fields such as high-power insulated gate bipolar translator (IGBT) etc.. This paper reviews the mechanism, influencing factors and major methods to enhance thermal conductivity of polymers and polymer composites based on two different polymer types (including thermoplastics and thermosetting), due to their different application scenarios and heat-resistant temperature. At the same time, the advantages of these methods, as well as the existing problems and limitations for practical application are comprehensively sum-marized. In addition, major challenges and opportunities for further developments are also discussed.
PVDF/CF Conductive Composites with High Sensitivity and Stable Reproducibility of Positive Temperature Coefficient Effect

Abstract:Application of polymer based composites with positive temperature coefficient (PTC) effect is greatly limited because of the drawbacks such as slow change of the resistivity in the transition temperature range, low PTC intensity, poor PTC reproducibility. In this work, the composite composed of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as matrix and carbon fiber (CF) as conductive filler was prepared by melt mixing to obtain high PTC intensity and stable reproducibility of PTC effect. The resulted PVDF/CF composites, with CF content from 13.1 vol% to 18.2 vol%, which was above the percolation threshold of 3.93 vol%, showed remarkable PTC effect without significant negative temperature coefficient (NTC) effect during heating processed. A fast transition from conductor to insulator was obtained when the temperature was close to the melting point of PVDF matrix, namely, the increase rate of volume resistivity was 1.3 x 10(5) Omega cm K-1 in the transition temperature range (155.5 - 171.0 degrees C). To our knowledge, this study is the first to report such phenomena in CF filled composites. The transition temperature ranges for all composites, determined by the melt temperature range and melting point of PVDF matrix, were almost the same owing to the presence of CF, and showed no effect on the crystallization behaviour of PVDF matrix. The room temperature resistivity and PTC intensity of composites with low CF content showed dependences on the thermal-cooling cycles, but they showed almost the same pattern and PTC intensity for the composites with high CF content. Desired reconstruction of CF network in the PVDF melt during cooling process and the excellent PTC reproducibility were observed even after 9 thermal-cooling cycles.

Abstract:With carbon black(CB),including low structure CB(F101) or high structure CB(XE2),as conductive filler,epoxy resin(EP),including E-54,E-51 or E-44,as matrix resin,a CB/EP composite was prepared by ultrasonic dispersion and solution blending.The influences of CB structure,CB content and EP matrix resin on PTC(positive temperature coefficient) effect of composite were investigated.The results showed that the F101/EP composite had obvious PTC effect,but the XE2/EP composite had weaker PTC effect.The PTC intensity of F101/EP composite was increased with increasing F101 content,which was opposite for the traditional thermoplastic composite conductive macromolecule material.The composite with E-54 as matrix resin had higher PTC intensity,but the composite with E-44 as matrix resin had reversely lower PTC intensity.

Abstract:Conductive polymer composites with positive temperature coefficient (PTC) effect have been widely utilized in electronic industry due to their low density, excellent processibility and abundant adjustability. At the melting temperature, the phase transition of crystalline region results in volume expansion, which leads to a dramatic increase in volume resistivity of the composite. Therefore, the PTC performances are highly correlated with the melting process and melt properties of polymer matrix, which means the motion ability of molecules chain during matrix melting affects the performances of the composite such as PTC intensity and reproducibility. Making a thorough inquiry of the effects of polymer molecular motility on PTC behavior is helpful for the design and fabrication of polymer based PTC materials with highly sensitive response to temperature and stable reproducibility in heating-cooling cycles. In this study, the resistance-temperature characteristic of carbon fibers (CF) filled poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) composites with varied melt viscosity of PVDF was investigated. All the samples showed significant PTC effect during heating processes without negative temperature coefficient (NTC) effect even at temperatures much higher than the melting point of polymer matrix. It can be found that the PTC transition temperature range depended only on the chemical structure and crystallinity of PVDF, while the cyclic stability of PTC behavior was significantly affected by the motion ability of the matrix molecules. For the PVDF(710)/CF composite with matrix of stronger molecular motion, during the heating cycles, the molecular chains possibly stuck to the fillers surface to form an insulating layer, which resulted in wider gaps between fillers and thus reduced tunneling current. After cooling, the reconstruction of conductive paths in composites was impeded, resulting in higher resistivity at room temperature, lower PTC intensity and worse reproducibility. On the contrary, in the PVDF(5130)/CF composites with higher matrix viscosity, the molecular chains with weaker motion ability would not cover CF particles. The composite could almost rebuild the conductive paths to the initial condition after heating-cooling cycles, thus stabilizing a better PTC reproducibility and stable resistivity at room temperature. When applied in the circuit overheat protection device, the PVDF(5130)/CF composite shut off the current timely at 167 degrees C and recovered the circuit when cooled down, exhibiting excellent sensitivity and reproducibility as thermal responsive switch.

Abstract:With the development of electronic appliances and electronic equipment towards miniaturization, lightweight and high-power density, the heat generated and accumulated by devices during high-speed operation seriously reduces the working efficiency and service life of the equipment. The key to solving this problem is to develop high-performance thermal management materials and improve the heat dissipation efficiency of the equipment. This paper mainly summarizes the research progress of polymer composites with high thermal conductivity and electrical insulation, including the thermal conductivity mechanism of composites, the factors affecting the thermal conductivity of composites, and the research status of thermally conductive and electrical insulation polymer composites in recent years. Finally, we look forward to the research focus and urgent problems that should be addressed of high-performance thermal conductive composites, which will provide strategies for further development and application of advanced thermal and electrical insulation composites.
