Abstract:Based on a Jeffcott rotor system with rigid support, the math models of flexural and torsional vibration were built, and their vibration characteristics were concluded. A simulation experiment in this paper was designed about the flexural and torsional vibration of shafts on a simulated turbine generator during network impacts. By analysis, flexural and torsional vibration characteristics were obtained, and the results showed the shafts flexural vibration and torsional vibration were interacted with each other. It was provided that torsional vibration could inhibit the complex shafts exercise. A new idea was suggested that the characteristics of torsion vibration should be considered as the symptom of faults diagnosis.

Abstract:Based on dynamic simulation system of power grid and torsional vibration simulator of turbo-generator shaft,an experimental test was conducted to study the torsional vibration under typical and disturbed working conditions,after which the non-stationary vibration signals were analyzed using Hilbert-Huang Transform(HHT) method.Results show that under short-circuit fault,when torsional vibration of the electrical-mechanical interaction kind exists,the amplitude of torsional vibration increases greatly while the stimulated frequency changes;the 3D time-frequency graph indicates that the amplitude first rises and then drops,forming a corresponding peak-to-valley curve of bottleneck like.The holding time of torsional vibration caused by electrical-mechanical interaction in the case of 3-phase short-circuit fault is longer than that of 2-phase short-circuit fault.Hilbert spectrum quantitatively describes the rapid process of vibration frequency and amplitude varying with the time under electrical disturbances.

Abstract:Torsional vibration responses of a nonlinear shafting system are studied by a modified Riccati torsional transfer matrix combining with the Newmark-β method. Firstly, the system is modeled as a chain consisting of an elastic spring with concentrated mass points, from which a multi-segment lumped mass model is established. Secondly, accumulated errors are eliminated from the eigenfrequencies and responses of the system's torsional vibration by this newly developed procedure. The incremental transfer matrix method, combining the modified Riccati torsional transfer matrix with Newmark-β method, is further applied to solve the dynamical equations for the torsional vibration of the nonlinear shafting system. Lastly, the shafting system of a turbine-generator is employed as an illustrating example, and simulation analysis has been performed on the transient responses of the shaft's torsional vibrations during typical power network disturbances, such as three-phase short circuit, two-phase short circuit and asynchronous juxtaposition. The results validate the present method and are instructive for the design of a turbo-generator shaft.

Abstract:A simulation experiment was designed to study subsynchronous resonance of turbo generator shafts. The Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT) was used to analyze flexural and torsional vibrations of the generator shafts impacted by subsynchronous resonance (SSR). The Hilbert spectrum quantitatively demonstrated the process of flexural and torsional vibrations and showed the essential characteristics of the vibration signals. The analysis results show that the flexural and torsional vibrations of shafts are interacted with each other, and the torsional vibration can suppress the complex shafts motions. When the torsional vibration of the subsynchronous resonance occurs, the torsional vibration frequencies change and the second frequency multiplication disappear. The Hilbert spectrum of flexural vibration can reflect the frequency variation under the impact, which is helpful to calculation of the torsional vibration duration.

Abstract:Subsynchronous oscillation (SSO) or torsional vibration may cause shaft of steam turbine generator hurt heavily. This phenomenon has destroyed two generator shafts in one of China’s power plant in 2008. Detailed analysis and several measurements have been taken to identify the reason of the accident. First, the operational data is analyzed, including field torsional vibration dada. Then, the modal of the shaft system is calculated. Each torsional vibration frequency is gotten with corresponding modal shape. Dangerous location of the shaft system is obtained. Third, torque value of different operation condition is calculated based on two different models: one is traditional multiple mass element rotor dynamic model and the other is an four mass element electromechanical model of rotor oscillation. Following, the maximum stress on the dangerous location is calculated using finite element method. Finally, the root cause of shaft destruction is analyzed and identified.

Abstract:The shafting for turbogenerator unit has become longer due to its capacity increase,meanwhile,rotor components may have inevitable mass eccentricity with increase of service time,that would bring apparent coupled lateral and torsional vibration of the turbogenerator shaft system.The dynamic characteristics of shafting can be investigated more exactly from the viewpoint of coupled lateral and torsional vibration.The previous study for coupled lateral and torsional vibration of tur- bogenerator rotor and shaft system is reviewed and purpose for further study is provided.It is significant for operation safety and failure diagnose of turbogenerator unit to carry out investigation on the coupled lateral and torsional vibration,and it may be effective to introduce advanced mechanics knowledge in further study.

Abstract:A novel approach based on the Lyapunov decomposition–aggregation method is developed to analyze shaft stability in power systems. The power system including the turbine-generator shaft, flux decay and voltage regulator is decomposed to two isolated subsystems: mechanical subsystem and electrical subsystem. The mechanical subsystem is converted to a standard Lure control system that is analyzed by an improved Lure Lyapunov function. The stability of the power system at the equilibrium points is discussed in detail. The stable operation region of the system is obtained. Case study demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed method. This study has shown the potential benefits and validity of Lyapunov direct method in the shaft torsional oscillation analysis.

Abstract:In order to find the cause of the shaft crack appeared in a 600MW steam turbine generator, several measurements are taken. The shaft assembly consists of three parts: shrink-fitted coupling, shaft and key which are used to transfer torque between coupling and shaft. First, the natural frequency of the shaft system is calculated. The result shows that the vibration signal contains the frequency nears the second natural frequency of the steam turbine shaft system. Second, stress field near the damaged coupling and shaft is analyzed using finite element method. The torque under different operation condition is calculated before stress analysis and applied to the shaft assembly, then. And, local stress concentrations position calculated is proved to be coincident with the place crack initiation. Finally, the cause of the fault is analyzed: at least three causes have found to be having something to do with the crack fault.

Abstract:Abnormal vibration may be induced at steam turbine HP rotor-bearing system when power control mode switches between throttle control and nozzle control. The data of a power plant unit is analyzed and the correlation between the abnormal vibration and the oscillation of governing valve position is found. By mechanism analysis and numerical simulation,the cause is inferred to be steam forces which change suddenly to impact the rotor. The inference is demonstrated by a verification test on the unit,where the abnormal problem is eliminated by optimizing valve flow characteristic to reduce the valve oscillation.

The effectiveness of the proposed Lyapunov function is proven. The stability of the power system at the equilibrium points is discussed in detail. The stable operation region of the system is obtained by use of the proposed Lyapunov function. The validity of the proposed method is also verified by simulation results for an IEEE First benchmark for SSR. This study has shown the potential benefits and validity of Lyapunov direct method in the shaft torsional oscillation analysis.

Abstract:The installed capacity of wind turbines in China increased rapidly in the past 10 years. Against the backdrop of growing wind turbine capacity, the failure of wind turbines is becoming increasingly serious. Based on the three primary configurations and failure statistics analysis of wind turbines in China, this paper summarizes the failures of wind turbine components, such as frequency converters, generators, gearboxes, pitch systems, yaw systems, blades, braking systems and sub-synchronous machines. Although there are many failure types and various causes, we can deduce four primary reasons for these failures: lack of core technologies; inferior quality due to price competition; design standards and wind farm climate differences; and no mandatory quality certification and exterior factors, such as wind farm construction, power grids and maintenance. Finally, while aiming to improve the reliability, a reliability management method with regard to the design, manufacturing and maintenance of wind turbines was proposed.

Abstract:In recent years, the domestic unit commonly support shaft vibration failure occurred sometimes. Therefore, the stability of the shafting is a key issue concerned with the low load operation and flexible transformation of the turbine. Excessive unit vibration not only caused the movement of the unit, speeding up parts wear, resulting in fatigue damage parts, but also reduce the unit economy, more serious is to damage the unit, causing serious accidents. In order to solve the domestic unit commonly support shaft vibration fault multiple, in this paper, the vibration of the commonly shaft system of the domestic unit is classified, and the distribution ratio of the different types of commonly support shaft faults is calculated, and then, the fault type and its vibration characteristics are analyzed. At the same time, the solution of different types of faults is given with the engineering examples. Finally, the difference of vibration characteristics of commonly support shaft is summarized, and the direction of further research is put forward.
Coupled Torsional Vibration and Fatigue Damage of Turbine Generator Due to Grid Disturbance

Abstract:Crack failures continually occur in shafts of turbine generator, where grid disturbance is an important cause. To estimate influences of grid disturbance, coupled torsional vibration and fatigue damage of turbine generator shafts are analyzed in this work, with a case study in a 600MW steam unit in China. The analysis is the following: (i) coupled system is established with generator model and finite element method (FEM)-based shafts model, where the grid disturbance is signified by fluctuation of generator outputs and the shafts model is formed with lumped mass model (LMM) and continuous mass model (CMM), respectively; (ii) fatigue damage is evaluated in the weak location of the shafts through local torque response computation, stress calculation, and fatigue accumulation; and (iii) failure-prevention approach is formed by solving the inverse problem in fatigue evaluation. The results indicate that the proposed scheme with continuous mass model can acquire more detailed and accurate local responses throughout the shafts compared with the scheme without coupled effects or the scheme using lumped mass model. Using the coupled torsional vibration scheme, fatigue damage caused by grid disturbance is evaluated and failure prevention rule is formed.

Abstract:In the light of such problems as abrupt jump of the vibration value and mismatching of the wheel disks caused by any deficiency in design of bolts for the coupling on the rotor of a 600 MW unit low-voltage generator,proposed was an optimized four-boss bolt structure instead of the original three-boss bolt one on the basis of a study of the relationship between the elongation of the bolts and the torque transferred.The three-dimensional non-linear contact finite element method was used to calculate and analyze both bolt structures under different operating conditions.A comparison of the calculated results indicates that the four-boss optimization version can effectively and safely transfer a torque under various operating conditions and ensure safe operation of the unit.

Also the operation conditions of the turbines in a power plant were introduced and according to the bearing vibration data and envelope analysis method, vibration parameters met the requirement of safe operation after twice dynamic balance adjustment. This method provides the theoretical basis for preventing and monitoring turbine’s faults.

Abstract:Aiming at the problem of the high on-line vibration of the nuclear power half-speed turbo-generator, this paper made a step-by-step analysis according to the vibration spectrum, off-line vibration test, electromagnetic interference verification, and natural frequency knock test. Finally a conclusion was made that the natural frequency of the sensor support setting is close to the four times harmonic wave of the generator operating frequency, resulting in sensor support setting resonance, which is the key reason of the high on-line vibration measurement.
