Abstract:Based on a Jeffcott rotor system with rigid support, the math models of flexural and torsional vibration were built, and their vibration characteristics were concluded. A simulation experiment in this paper was designed about the flexural and torsional vibration of shafts on a simulated turbine generator during network impacts. By analysis, flexural and torsional vibration characteristics were obtained, and the results showed the shafts flexural vibration and torsional vibration were interacted with each other. It was provided that torsional vibration could inhibit the complex shafts exercise. A new idea was suggested that the characteristics of torsion vibration should be considered as the symptom of faults diagnosis.

Abstract:Abnormal vibration may be induced at steam turbine HP rotor-bearing system when power control mode switches between throttle control and nozzle control. The data of a power plant unit is analyzed and the correlation between the abnormal vibration and the oscillation of governing valve position is found. By mechanism analysis and numerical simulation,the cause is inferred to be steam forces which change suddenly to impact the rotor. The inference is demonstrated by a verification test on the unit,where the abnormal problem is eliminated by optimizing valve flow characteristic to reduce the valve oscillation.
Research of Unsteady Aerodynamic Force and Oscillating Flow Field Around Cascade on Shafting Torsional Vibration

Abstract:Along with the development of heavy duty turbogenerator set, the problem on shafting torsional vibration becomes more significant, the interaction of oscillating flow field and cascade may be a reason which leads to shafting unstable. On the basis of theoretical research and experiment, this paper researches the relationship between shafting torsional vibration and fluid exciting vibration, derives 3 D compressible inviscid flow amplitude equations and its integrating equations using parameter polynomial method, calculates oscillating flow field and unsteady aerodynamic force around last stage of a heavy duty steam turbine. The research results indicates that the size of work done by unsteady aerodynamic force depends on vibration amplitude, the sign of work is concerned with the vibration frequency, thus a criterion, which determines if the unsteady aerodynamic force leads to shafting unstable, is given. It provides a useful means for analysis and judgement on aerodynamic safety of heavy duty turbogenerator set.

Abstract:The types of shock impulse of ship shafting systems were introduced.Shock dynamic model of a ship shafting system was built with finite element method,and a software(SHAFTFE) for ship shafting system dynamics and shock response simulation was developed with MATLAB.Dynamic characteristics of a ship power shafting system including propulsion shafting,propulsion electric motor and its vibration isolator were analyzed using SHAFTFE with different shock forces and parameters,and effects of the structural design parameters of the ship shafting system on the shock response were analyzed.The results showed that the ship power shafting system has a larger displacement under the action of the base shock,so more attention must be paid to the shock character of ship power shafting systems during design in order to increase reliability and survival performance of a whole ship.

Abstract:The theoretical calculation about unbalanced steam force in governing stage and the static and dynamic characteristics of the bearings was carried out according to the actual problems occurred in the operating of the existing steam turbine.The influencing mechanism of the steam distribution method to the temperature and vibration of bushes and the position of axes and etc was found.The effect of the steam distribution method on shaft system security was elaborated.The method of the comprehensive optimization design for the steam distribution of the steam turbine was proposed.Combined with practical operating on spot,the effect of the steam optimum distribution on the security and economics and etc was thoroughly and systematically analyzed.Figs 10,table 1 and refs 7.

Abstract:Subsynchronous oscillation (SSO) or torsional vibration may cause shaft of steam turbine generator hurt heavily. This phenomenon has destroyed two generator shafts in one of China’s power plant in 2008. Detailed analysis and several measurements have been taken to identify the reason of the accident. First, the operational data is analyzed, including field torsional vibration dada. Then, the modal of the shaft system is calculated. Each torsional vibration frequency is gotten with corresponding modal shape. Dangerous location of the shaft system is obtained. Third, torque value of different operation condition is calculated based on two different models: one is traditional multiple mass element rotor dynamic model and the other is an four mass element electromechanical model of rotor oscillation. Following, the maximum stress on the dangerous location is calculated using finite element method. Finally, the root cause of shaft destruction is analyzed and identified.

Abstract:In order to investigate the cause of the typical bush rupture and wear damages in the journal bearing of the steam turbine generator set, the lubrication turbulence and thermo-hydrodynamic effects were studied. The generalized Reynolds equation, energy equation and heat conduction equations were solved with the finite difference method, and the pressure, temperature, thickness distribution of the oil film were obtained. Analysis results can be well explains the bearing bush burst in bearings maximum pressure place because of heavy load running. The bearing bush burst made friction intensified that caused oil temperature increasing and the viscosity reduce, which led to the rotor eccentricity increase, the minimum film thickness smaller and bearing static working point down, thus causing the wear damages until shutdown.

Abstract:Steam turbine operation in the partial admission mode is prone to vibration instability .In this paper, the experimental study on the vibration instability of the regulation stage of the steam turbine regulating stage is carried out ,built the partial admission simulation test platform ,launched the turbine part steam shafting bearing damage research test .In the normal operation of the experimental unit , the vibration signal of the bearing is considered as the normal signal .After overworked phenomenon vibration signal of Shafting Vibration Instability is considered to be the fault signal .Through the analysis of fault signals and normal signals by time domain analysis to get the fault discrimination .The test data is spectrum analyzed by Fast Fourier transform to find out the general location which is fits well with real unit .
Dynamic Response of Rub Caused by a Shedding Annular Component Happening in a Steam Turbine

Abstract:Rub caused by a shedding annular component is a severe fault happening in a steam turbine, which could result in a long-term wearing effect on the shaft. The shafting abrasion defects shortened the service life and damaged the unit. To identify the fault in time, the dynamic response of rub caused by a shedding annular component was studied as follows: (I) a rotor-bearing model was established based on the structural features of certain steam turbines; node-to-node contact constraint and penalty method were utilized to analyze the impact and friction; (II) dynamic response of the rotor-bearing system and the shedding component was simulated with the development of rub after the component was dropping; (III) fault features were extracted from the vibration near the bearing position by time-domain and frequency-domain analysis. The results indicate that the shedding annular component would not only rotate pivoting its axis but also revolve around the shaft after a period of time. Under the excitation of the contact force, the peak-peak vibration fluctuates greatly. The frequency spectrum contains two main components, that is, the working rotating frequency and revolving frequency. The same phenomenon was observed from the historical data in the field.
A Study of Response Characteristics of a Steam Turbine Governing System in the Presence of Friction and Clearance

Abstract:Due to component wear, working oil-related pollution and ingress of foreign matter there may emerge cases of friction and an enlarged clearance in the governing system of a steam turbine. The foregoing can lead to a system limit-ring oscillation. When the friction resistance increased to a certain degree, seizure of moving parts may take place, posing a serious threat to the safety of the turbine unit. From the perspective of time-domain response and the analysis of frequency spectrum the authors have studied the response characteristics of the steam turbine governing system in the presence of friction and clearance. With the response characteristics of the friction and clearance being identified the present paper can serve some useful purpose for system status monitoring and failure diagnosis.

Abstract:The Francis turbine shaft-system consists of a hydraulic-turbine runner, generator-rotor, hydraulic-turbine shaft andgenerator shaft, which is the key component of the hydraulic-turbine unit, and the status of the shaft-systeminstallationaffects the safety and reliability of the hydraulic-turbine unit directly. The rotor-dynamic characteristics of a large-scaleFrancis turbine shaft-system under different rotating speeds were calculated with the finite-element method (FEM) inthis paper. The results show that the vibration motion of the studied shaft-system is a bending mode. The rotatingspeedof the unit has significant influences on the rotor-dynamic characteristics of the Francis turbine shaft-system, includingits natural-frequencies, vibration modes and critical-speed. By comparing the critical-speed with the rated and runawayspeed of the Francis turbine shaft-system, the evaluation shows that the shaft-system operates in safe conditions. Theresearch provides theoretical support and practical reference for on-site assembly, safe production and operationofprototype hydroelectric units. The conclusions can be extended to the high-quality installation and operation of other large hydroelectric generating units, pumps and pump-turbine units.

Abstract:From data collected by an online condition monitoring and fault diagnosis system, a higher pad temperature at the upper guide bearing in a pumped storage power generator unit installed in Guangdong province(GPSPS), China, was found. And also a relatively intensive shaft vibration occurred at the lower guide bearing. By calculating the Reynolds equation and viscosity-temperature equation of the lubricant, a curve between the pre-load coefficient and the increment of pad temperature is obtained, which shows that the larger, the pre-load coefficient, the bigger, the increment of pad temperature. For a practical unit in GPSPS, by employing Transfer matrix method and Wilson-theta method to analyze shaft vibration at different pre-load coefficients of the whole bearing or "pad pair" bearings, the results show that the larger the pre-load coefficient is, the smaller the vibration amplitude is, the shorter the time for vibration to become steady is. And an uneven pre-load coefficient of the "pad pair" bearings will cause shaft orbit from a circle to an ellipse whose long axes is at the direction of the "pad pair" with the lowest pre-load coefficient. Finally, reasons of higher pad temperature of the upper guide bearing and larger shaft vibration at the lower guide bearing are due to the inconsistent relation of bearing assembling clearance or pre-load coefficient of the upper and lower guide bearing, and also due to the too small, uneven pre-load coefficient of "pad pair" bearings. After a scheme for adjusting the bearing clearance is given, data measured show that the analysis and simulation methods are correct and the adjustment scheme to the assembling clearance of the upper and lower guide bearings is feasible and can be used to guide the field maintenance conveniently.
Effect of Steam Distribution Method on Large Steam Turbine Rotor Stability

Abstract:Peak shaving operation of more and more large power steam turbines become necessary due to the load fluctuations. The characteristics of steam distribution system of a steam turbine under part-load conditions will affect not only the economy but also the rotor system stability of the unit. A fluid structure interaction method was used in this paper. The rotor system stability of a subcritical 600 MW steam turbine was studied under part-load conditions where unbalanced fluid force was considered. The mechanism of worsen stability of rotor system after turning to sequence valve mode was analyzed. An optimum mode of steam distribution system was proposed. The mode had been used for some practical turbine units and improved their stability of rotor systems. The research may help to improve the performance of the steam distribution system of a large power steam turbine.

Abstract:The novel transient dynamic vibration model of pump-turbine's shaft system considers nonlinear seal fluid forces, in addition to the coupled effects of unbalanced magnetic pull (UMP), guide bearing force, unbalanced mass force and hydraulic force. The calculations are based on the finite element method (FEM) and Lagrange equation. Node automation division method (NADM) is developed in-house for quick and accurate node division. The differential equations of motion and the dynamic response of the unit are resolved by implicit Newmark method. The nonlinear dynamic characteristics of crown seal force and UMP are researched. The transient and steady lateral vibrations of three bearings are also analyzed using the periodic response diagrams, steady axis orbits and waterfall diagrams. The calculated results demonstrate that the mounted eccentricity, crown seal channel clearance and air-gap length have significant effects on the dynamic vibration of the shaft system. When the mounted eccentricity is 0mm, clearance of crown seal is 3mm, air-gap length is 35mm, the stability of the system is the highest. Both quantitative and qualitative results are relevant for engineering use in pump-turbine's shaft system design.

Abstract:Recently, the low-frequency vibrations of high-pressure turbine rotors have become an important problem to be overcome in China. The latest investigation shows that there are many closedown accidents in power plants of China are due to the high vibration in high-pressure turbine rotor. Most of these faults is excited by steam disturbing force. The cause of steam whirl is deeply discussed in the paper and the measures of suppressing the malfunction are also suggested.

Engineering Failure Analysis

Abstract:Defects may be induced by the degradation in long-term service of the equipment, where its components experience complicated conditions such as alternating loads, wearing or fretting conditions and creep. To repair the defects, cutting is the traditional approach to smooth the local profile, reduce the stress concentration and elongate the service life. This paper compared two plans to repair the shafting abrasion defects as the long-term wearing effect of foreign objects, observed in a 660. MW steam turbine. The first plan introduces relatively smaller cutting, compared with the second plan which takes a larger cutting volume with smoother profile. The analysis is following: (I) the local stress concentration at the abrasion location has been presented in contrast of the variation of the stress; (II) torsional vibration features are studied in detail with the shafting model, to determine the influence of the abrasion defects and to analyze the variation caused by the repairing cutting; the torsional vibration responses under four types of fault conditions are compared through the static, transient and steady responses; (III) local stress responses in weak locations of the shafting are acquired, and then the fatigue damage in these locations are further evaluated. The results indicate that, the second plan presents lower stress concentration, on the contrary, the first plan brings higher stress concentration, however it introduces less variation in the torsional vibration corresponding to smaller stress amplitude, and further causes less fatigue damage at the spot of fault. The first plan with relatively smaller cutting volume is therefore suggested as the primary repair plan. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:This paper presents a seismic analysis on steam turbine within a Nuclear Power Plant. Firstly, considering that steam turbine is a kind of large equipment with complex structure, high precision and tightly connected with other equipments and structure, this paper coupled together the steam turbine, condenser and its spring foundation as a whole structure for analysis, and created detailed finite analysis models for almost each part. Secondly, the detailed model of steam turbine, condenser and spring foundation was analyzed separately to obtain their dynamic properties (inertia, eigenvalues etc.) to verify whether the detailed finite analysis models were correct and proper. Thirdly, with seismic analysis on the whole structure with time-history method, relative displacement time history curves of some places, as well as stress response of LP ( low pressure) outer and inner case, was extracted. Finally, the anti-seismic performance of steam turbine, such as rotor gaps using those relative displacement and stress response results, was analyzed and evaluated.
Effects of the steam excitation force to the vibration behaviours of the turbomachinery

Abstract:In turbomachinery, steam excitation forces may result from non-idealised operation conditions and may sometimes cause excessive vibrations and unsteady rotor motions. The goal of this paper is to investigate the effects of such excitation. This unsteady steam excitation force is caused by the variation of inlet steam speed and state blade trailing wake. By applying lateral vibration models of a simple Jeffcott rotor bearing system and a 600 MW steam turbine generator (consisting of one HP/IP rotor, two LP rotors and one generator rotor) into the in-house 'transient' analysis software, numerical simulations are carried out by comparing the system response orbits and corresponding spectra with varying rotating speeds and steam inlet speeds. The dynamic behaviour of the rotor is approached by the finite element method. Each shaft segment is modelled as a massless beam with two lumped masses at the ends. There are four degrees of freedom associated with such an element, two translations at each end point of the element. The cross section of the element is considered circular and uniform for each segment in this study. The results show that for the Jeffcott rotor, due to the unrealistic parameters chosen, the steam force stabilises the system. However, for the real machine rotors, the excitations cause unsteady motion when the power of the steam excitation forces reach certain limits depending on the inlet steam speeds as well as the running speed. More power is needed to cause additional vibrations of the system at low speeds than at high speeds.

Abstract:As an important component of a wind turbine drive chain, the high failure rate of the gearbox can have a serious impact on the operation of wind turbine units. The fault diagnosis of the gearbox is therefore important for the safety of wind turbine units. In this paper, a gearbox experiment rig was built, experiments on the gear surface spalling fault were held on the rig under laboratory conditions, the shaft vibration displacement signals were collected, related vibration signals were analyzed by time domain, amplitude domain, frequency domain and wavelet analysis, and the results of different analysis methods were compared. The results show that the waveform of normal and fault signals are similar, the amplitude of the signals will change while the fault happens, and the wavelet analysis is more effective than frequency domain analysis on gearbox fault features extraction. © 2010 IEEE.

Abstract:The parts of hydro-turbine and its stability is often damaged and affected by the vibration and this often results in great loss. The reason of vibration is various. Based on a real machine in laboratory, this paper uses ANSYS finite element software to model the main shaft system in the hydro-turbine generating unit. On this basis, it takes the modal analysis and calculates the critical speed of rotation. The results can provide a reference for dynamic analysis and a foundation for the design or improvement.
