Abstract:This paper elaborates and analyzes the phenomenon of power loss measurement error,and concludes that the error is caused by current transformers running within non-linear range.Therefore,the threshold detection method is formulated for current transformer to guarantee accuracy-class primary current,and the factors influencing threshold is analyzed.Finally,some suggestions are proposed for the development of current transformers.

Abstract:In order to reduce the interference from stray flux of adjacent bus bars on the error of heavy current transformer (HCT) which always has a large diameter, the interference mechanism was investigated theoretically in details based on magnetic circuit. It was concluded that there were mainly two interference ways that the stray flux affected the error of HCT, and then it was further verified by experiments and finite element method (FEM). A formula was derived to calculate the error of HCT due to the interference. It was found that leakage flux around the core performed an important role in the error of HCT with a large diameter. Some methods were suggested to reduce the interference on HCT, especially when considering the nonuniform leakage flux along the large circumference of iron core.

Abstract:In this paper, a correction method is introduced to make a more accurate calculation of winding eddy-current losses of high-voltage direct current (HVDC) converter transformer. The assumption that winding eddy-current losses of HVDC converter transformers follow the frequency with the exponent 2 proposed by IEC 61378-2 Std. is thought to be inappropriate and the skin effect should be taken into consideration. The frequency characteristic of winding eddy-current losses is proposed by analysing the distribution of magnetic flux in conductors, in which skin effect is taken into consideration. The correction method with a correction factor is then introduced to correct the assumption. To verify the validity of the correction method, a two-dimension axisymmetric finite element analysis of a HVDC converter transformer is conducted. The geometrical complexity of windings and electrical connection are fully taken into account, it is shown that the correction method shows a significant advantage. Influence of different methods is revealed by applying the actual non-sinusoidal load current and it is shown that the error of correction method is the least. At last, harmonic losses measurements are conducted on three coils to investigate the limits of the correction method.

Abstract:Electronic current transformers, with excellent properties of simple insulation, small volume, light weight, wide dynamic range, and no magnetic saturation, have been widely used in substations. With the fast improvement of substation voltage grade, the electromagnetic interference (EMI) problem of switching operation overvoltage, especially very fast transient overvoltage (VFTO), on electronic transformers in substations has gotten more and more attention. In this paper, the physical process of VFTO in high voltage substations is analyzed. The high frequency model of Rogowski coil in electronic transformers under VFTO is built, the simulated waveform of the signals at the output ports of Rogowski coil is obtained. It is proved that the distribution parameters model can reflect the high frequency characteristics better by comparing the waveform of distribution parameter model, lumped parameter model and the measured signal waveform.

Abstract:The non uniformly-distributed equal ampere-turns test,which concentrates the primary turns on one part of the current transformer's core,was presented to measure the error of current transformer in actual working environment.However,there's few or no special research on this method of test at home and abroad up to now.In this paper,3D non-working magnetic field and resultant magnetic field of current transformer's core under non uniformly-distributed equal ampere-turns test are solved with 3D finite element method to reveal the principle of this method of test.The trends of these magnetic fields about primary turns' concentrated angle on current transformer's core are also analyzed.It has indicated that the magnetic field of current transformer's core caused from the change of primary turns' concentrated angle on the core could simulate the stray magnetic field of the core caused from the external currents and short circuit fault.

Abstract:Through digital simulation tests with ATP, this paper studies the variation of the measured impedances in the Fourier algorithm-based distance protection, under the saturation of current transformer (CT). Research results show that the saturation of CT may probably result in the transcendence of the distance relays employed in the transmission lines. When the CT undergoes different saturation, the starting time, duration time and severe degree of the transcendence are also discussed in detail.

Abstract:The error detection platform for current transformers (CTs) typically measures CT error by using the comparison method provided by International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 61869-2. It uses a more accurate standard CT as reference and the error of tested CT is obtained through comparison. This paper proposes an alternative approach of determining CT error by measuring the turns correction factor and magnetizing impedance. The measurement of magnetizing impedance is essentially equivalent to the excitation current measurement method. Therefore, high current sources are not required. More importantly, the measurement process requires only an impedance measurement instrument and a millivoltmeter, eliminating the need for constructing a complex system, and on-site CT error measurement can be realized. This method has engineering practical value. This paper firstly derives formulas for CT error in terms of turns correction factor and impedance. The turns correction factor is measured through the proposed differential voltage method, while the impedance is measured by using an impedance measurement instrument. Additionally, the measurement uncertainty introduced by the nonlinearity and impedance measurement instrument is analyzed. The final CT error results indicate that the proposed method yields comparable accuracy to the comparison method.

Abstract:Reliability analysis is the key procedure during the development of electronic current transformer (ECT). On the basis of the contrastive analysis on reliability of electromagnetic current transformers, by means of failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA) as well as fault tree analysis (FTA) the reliability of a kind of electronic current transformer is researched, and perfect worksheets of both FMEA and FTA are established. All of minimum cut sets of fault trees are found out and the qualitative analysis on the reliability of the ECT is conducted. The effectiveness of the presented reliability analysis method is verified by the results of the analysis on two practical examples during the development and test process of the ECT.

Abstract:In view of the problem that the SF6 current transformer is prone to condensation,this paper studies the influence of ambient temperature on the performance of the current transformer from two aspects of simulation and measurement.First,the finite element analysis software is used to construct the current transformer model and the temperature field inside the transformer is analyzed under different temperature environments.Furthermore,the effect of the ambient temperature on the transformer is tested with the 110 kV SF6 current transformer with and without charge,with focus on impacts on the current transformer when the environmental temperature is drastically reduced.The experimental results show that the uneven temperature distribution inside and sudden decrease of the ambient temperatures may lead to local condensation inside the SF6 current transformer,causing malfunction of the transformer.

Abstract:The Electronic Current Transformer based on Rogowski coils (ECT) has many advantages, such as simple insulation structure, immunity to electromagnetic interference, no saturation effect, no flammable materials such as oil, and lightweight, etc. As a result, ECT has been considered as the appropriate substitute of the traditional electromagnetic current transformer. But the ECT is new equipment in power system, so the interfacing technology between ECT and relay protection is still immature, even the reliability of the relay protection system is decreased by the application of ECT. Based on the dynamic simulations that was carried out by Zhejiang Electric Power Corporation, the paper investigated the effect of application of ECT on relay protection equipment, such as the inconsistency between data from the duplicate analog-to-digital converters (AD), error output data of ECT at certain condition, error resynchronization of Merging Unit (MU), etc. An analysis of those problems is presented, the improvement of relay protections and ECT are proposed. Those improvements are verified by simulation.

Abstract:Exciting current is the root cause of electric energy measurement error. In this paper, a method for measuring the exciting current of current transformers by using an auxiliary winding is proposed. This method utilizes an auxiliary winding attached to current transformers as a key component for obtaining the operating data of the exciting current. By measuring the open circuit voltage of the auxiliary winding port and the voltages when the port is connected to different resistances, the equations can be established to calculate the exciting current from the measured voltages. This enables the on-line measurement of the exciting current, thereby obtaining the current working state of the core. Additionally, according to the proposed exciting current measurement method, a measurement system for the exciting current using the auxiliary winding is designed. The corresponding measurement implementation plan is provided and some measurements are conducted. The results confirm the feasibility of the proposed auxiliary winding method.

Abstract:Ansoft Maxwell software was used to compute the electromagnetic properties of power supply current transformer with different iron-core structure.According to the simulation results, it can be found that slotted iron-core saturation began in the smaller primary current.As the current increases, when the iron core fully saturated, output voltage wave of current transformer with slotted core was distored more lightly, which means the acquiring-energy time was increased.Experiments have been carried out to analyze the output characteristics of power supply current transformer with 100 Ω resistor load, whose results are consistent with the simulation results.

Abstract:Purpose This paper aims to develop a model that reflects the current transformer (CT) core materials nonlinearity. The model enables simulation and analysis of the CT excitation current that includes the inductive magnetizing current and the resistive excitation current. Design/methodology/approach A nonlinear CT model is established with the magnetizing current as the solution variable. This model presents the form of a nonlinear differential equation and can be solved discretely using the Runge–Kutta method. Findings By simulating variations in the excitation current for different primary currents, loads and core materials, the results demonstrate that enhancing the permeability of the B–H curve leads to a more significant improvement in the CT ratio error at low primary currents. Originality/value The proposed model has three obvious advantages over the previous models with the secondary current as the solution variable: (1) The differential equation is simpler and easier to solve. Previous models contain the time differential terms of the secondary current and excitation flux or the integral term of the flux, making the iterative solution complicated. The proposed model only contains the time differential of the magnetizing current. (2) The accuracy of the excitation current obtained by the proposed model is higher. Previous models calculate the excitation current by subtracting the secondary current from the converted primary current. Because these two currents are much greater than the excitation current, the error of calculating the small excitation current by subtracting two large numbers is greatly enlarged. (3) The proposed model can calculate the distorted waveform of the excitation current and error for any form of time-domain primary current, while previous models can only obtain the effective value.

Abstract:Abstract Compared with conventional electromagnetic current transformers, electronic current transformers have potential transfer advantages to transient current. This paper establishes the equivalent circuits of typical electronic current transformers and constructs transfer functions to analyze their frequency response characteristics. The PSCAD simulation model is established based on the transfer functions to simulate and analyze the transfer characteristics of typical electronic current transformers, and compare them with conventional current transformers in terms of steady-state response, transient response, impulse response, and step response. The analysis results demonstrate that electronic current transformers exhibit superior frequency response and transient response characteristics compared to conventional current transformers. The magnet-optic transformer and fiber-optic current transformer show better performance and are ideal for wide-band current sensing. However, low-power current transformers and Rogowski electronic transformers can only be used for AC measurement as they cannot transfer DC or non-periodic components. The transfer characteristics of fiber-optic current transformers are influenced by closed-loop control loop parameters and need to be designed according to specific application scenarios. The simulation analysis results in this paper can provide guidance for selecting suitable current transformers for new-type power systems.

Abstract:The wrong signal of electronic transformer resulted from complex strong electromagnetism disturbance can cause the malfunction of relay protection device,reduce the reliability of power system.The test system of separating and combining capacitive small current produces complex electromagnetic environment conditions to detect the output characteristics of electronic current transformer.First of all,the breakdown voltage,the voltage between the two fracture and the breakdown current are used to judge whether the disconnector is broken down or not.The model of the disconnector is built to simulate the electromagnetic transient disturbance.Secondly,the electronic current transformer model of Rogowski coil based on active and passive integrators are simulated under the operating condition of disconnector respectively.Finally,the simulation results show that under the complex electromagnetic environment and the premise of similar sensitivity,the electronic current transformer based on passive integrator is more than 65％ higher than that of the active integrator in high-frequency response.In this way,it can accurately reflect the change of bus current and improve the output characteristic of electronic current transformer under transient electromagnetic environment.

Abstract:The electronic transformer insteads of electro-magnetic transformer is the developing trend. However, it is still difficult to put into practice because the influence of temperature and the stability of long-term operation. In this paper, an electronic current transformer applied in GIS is presented. The mature sensor theory is adopted in order to obtain the steady long-term operation result. And then the testing system of current transformer is designed and realized. The on-site test shows that the error is superior to the standard of 0.2 class transformer. The possible improving measure is discussed at last. This work will be helpful for accumulation of operation experience and improvement of long-term stability.
