Abstract:Through digital simulation tests with ATP, this paper studies the variation of the measured impedances in the Fourier algorithm-based distance protection, under the saturation of current transformer (CT). Research results show that the saturation of CT may probably result in the transcendence of the distance relays employed in the transmission lines. When the CT undergoes different saturation, the starting time, duration time and severe degree of the transcendence are also discussed in detail.

Abstract:Saturation of Current Transformer (CT) is the major problem of Bus Protect in power system.Many measures have been adopted to prevent CT from error operation after saturation,but until now this problem has not been satisfactorily solved for various reasons.On the basis of the physical principle of CT saturation,this paper present a new saturated criterion depending on the flux of CT,and find out a dependable measure to solve the error operation of Differential Bus Protect Coursed by CT saturation theoretically.Furthermore,a Differential Bus Protect technique based on the linear section of CT is presented.

Abstract:The mal-operation of the transformer differential protection will occasionally take place after the removal of external faults. The physical phenomenon of partial transient saturation for current transformer was studied in this paper. Through model emulation, the experiment of small CT and the waveform of field fault record for mal-operation, it is pointed out that the main cause of the malfunction in differential protection is partial transient saturation of current transformer while transferring small load AC current at large remnant flux. The differential protection is very sensitivity to malfunction since the restrained current is small. At the same time, partial transient saturation phenomenon will also occur while CT transferring small AC current combined with long time decaying current (such as sympathetic inrush or through inrush). In order to solve this problem, an inverses time current differential protection scheme based on detecting external faults removal are proposed. This scheme could avoid the maloperation of the different protection due to CT partial transient saturation during the removal of external fault. It has great perspective if the method is realized for transformer protection.

Abstract:Droop controlled voltage source converters (VSCs) are very sensitive to overloading due to the low current capacity of switching devices, which implies that VSCs must switch from normal voltage control mode to current control mode at faults or load disturbance and therefore occur transient instability. This paper reviews current saturation phenomenon and reason of droop controlled VSCs. In particular, the boundary conditions between current saturation mode and normal mode are analyzed to express VSC’s static active power critical value at normal mode. Then, the influence of grid parameters and control parameters for current saturation is analyzed. Finally, the effectiveness of theoretical analysis is verified in MATLAB/Simulink and hardware-in-the-loop experiments based on RTLAB. The normal unsaturated VSC’s static active power critical value of theoretical calculation is basically consistent with the simulation.

Abstract:A new countermeasure to current transformer (TA) saturation, namely, current polarity comparison method, for differential current protection of transmission line is proposed. It compares the polarity of the saturated current of TA and that of the differential current during internal faults and external faults with a special analysis method. EMTP simulation results show that the proposed method is able to successfully block the differential current protection during external faults even when TA saturates, and also quickly unblock it during internal faults, especially when an evolving fault occurs. © 2009 State Grid Electric Power Research Institute Press.

Abstract:Saturation of current transformer may cause mal-operation of differential protection during the period of fault removal, sympathetic inrush or recovery inrush. The paper analyzed the character of relative accumulation of flux linkage of current transformer, and proposed an algorithm to diagnose phase-shift saturation of current transformer while the current transformer transferred a small power frequency current under the condition that large remanent flux and DC flux linkage accumulation was produced in current transformer. Assuming that one current transformer used for differential protection did not saturate and the other one saturated, the paper proposed an algorithm to diagnose phase-shift saturation of current transformer according to the characteristic of flux linkage accumulation. The variance of relative flux linkage accumulation and the number of inflexion point in the enabled zone was calculated. The dynamic experiments and field data verified that the algorithm had good performance in detecting phase-shift saturation of current transformer. © 2012 Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering.

Abstract:The principle of sympathetic interaction is analyzed firstly, which indicates that the bias flux is the primary factor in the produce process of sympathetic inrush. Then based on the simulation and combined with the characteristics of sympathetic interaction, we make a systematic study on the infection to the differential protection, back-up protection and other relative protection in the parallel connection and the series connection. The analysis shows that the saturation of current transformer caused by sympathetic inrush would bring some difficult in identifying the inrush in series connection; Moreover, it has great effect on the zero-sequence over-current protection of transformer and the back-up protection of the element in high level, such as over-current protection. The unit to identify inrush base on the harmonic restraint should be added to the protection.

Abstract:Distinguishing the current transformer saturation is one of difficulties for current differential protection.Therefore,many methods have been proposed to detect CT saturation based on one or more current transformer saturation characteristics,but some may not work reliably when the primary current is the load current,which does not result in current transformer saturation due to its small value.Based on the load current characteristics,a new anti-CT-saturation method for distinguishing load current is put forward in this paper,and it can be used as an assistant criterion for distinguishing current transformer saturation with clear characteristics and simple logic.

Abstract:An improved criterion using the magnetic restraint principle for detecting current transformer (TA) saturation combined with some characteristics of the second current is proposed for the equivalent circuit of TA. Hence the problem of obtaining the initial remanence is resolved in the core when the flux linkage is calculated using an integral algorithm. Simulation results with EMTP show that the improved criterion can accurately detect nearly all kinds of TA saturation and avoid mal-operation due to the remanence. In addition, the method is easy to implement and its validity and stability are satisfactory.

Abstract:To avoid the influence of the current transformer transient saturation, this paper studies a bus protection based on the transient current traveling-waves. On the basis of analyzing the fault feature of the differential traveling-wave in each phase of the transmission lines connected to the protected bus, the restraint traveling-wave in each phase is introduced to improve the sensitivity of distinguishing bus internal faults from external faults. Accordingly this paper presents the bus protection of differential traveling-waves with the percentage bias restraint characteristic, and proposes the bus protection practicable criterion using the wavelet transform. The theoretical analysis and EMTP simulation show that the bus protection operates rapidly, sensitively and reliably, and its performance can endure the influences of various fault types, fault path resistances, fault positions and fault inception angles.

Abstract:Based on the sudden decline of the secondary current after current transformer saturation, a new saturation criterion called current-dropping method is presented. It can be concluded from the simulation results on EMTP that the differential protection can be effectively blocked during the external fault, while they are quickly opened during the internal fault due to the current-dropping method. Meanwhile the problem of opening the differential protection during the transitional fault of the same phase with current transformer saturation is also solved. The proposed method is a promising current transformer saturation criterion with predominant performance, clear characteristics and simple logic.

Abstract:Current transformer (CT) saturation can cause the malfunction of the relay protection devices, which may destroy the stability of the power system under certain circumstances. In this paper, a hybrid physical model-driven and data- driven approach is proposed for the saturation correction of CT. On the premise of constructing the physical model of the undistorted fault current, the data- driven LSTM network is applied to identifying the key parameters of the model. Benefitting from the excellent performance of the LSTM network in processing timing series signals, this method has the advantages of flexible valid data window and low sampling rate, etc. In addition, it is worth mentioning that the attention mechanism is introduced and provides a visual explanation for the results. Finally, abundant simulation results verify the effectiveness of the method proposed in this paper.

Abstract:It proposes a method of detecting the secondary resistance R of CT on real time based on the principle of magnetic restraint differential protection for busbar. The simulation result shows that with this method, the initial saturation point of CT can be found correctly in despite of the influence from current transient and harmonics. It also can protect the magnetic restraint busbar protection from mal-operation possibly caused by variation of the secondary load of CT.

Abstract:By analyzing a case in practice, this paper discusses the mechanism of sympathetic inrush and the relationship between sympathetic inrush and transient saturation in transformer. The characteristics of initial inrush current waveform, sympathetic inrush waveform and transient saturation of a three-phase transformer are analyzed. By studying the effects of sympathetic inrush and transient saturation on the differential protection of transformer, a new method is proposed to prevent the differential protection from mal-operation.

Abstract:Current transformer (TA) saturation may cause great errors of fault location based on power frequency quantities. A method using an artificial neural network (ANN) is presented to correct the distortion of current transformer secondary current caused by the TA saturation. Moreover, a forward BP network is developed through MATLAB program. So the ANN can be trained to achieve an inverse transfer function of iron-core toroidal current transformers widely used in protection system. Consequently the compensated currents are suitable for fault location. The simulation results of EMTP show that the compensation of saturated current by ANN can significantly improve the accuracy of fault location.

Abstract:At present, current differential protection is widely applied to electrical equipment main protection. With the wide use of digital protection in power systems, it has been found that current transformer transient saturation can easily result in protection mal-operation. Linear strategy of current transformer anti-saturation for digital differential protection is based on the fact that linear data always exist per cycle during current transformer transient saturation. This specific strategy is to make full use of linear data to prevent ratio restraint differential protection from mal-operating during external faults. Exactly operating current phasor is calculated by half-cycle Fourier algorithm and the only minimum one is selected while restraining current phasor is calculated by full-cycle Fourier algorithm. Dynamic simulation data indicate that the strategy will eliminate the mal-operation caused by current transformer transient saturation during external faults. Finally the prospective application of transformer, generator-transformer and busbar differential protection with linear strategy of current transformer anti-saturation principle is described.

Abstract:In this paper, the principles of the three-phase saturated transformer coupling new-type solid state fault current limiter (SSFCL) are studied using the equivalent circuit method; in addition, considering the nonlinearity of the iron core material in the saturated transformer, the circuit field-coupled 3-D finite-element analysis is employed to investigate the transient performance of the proposed SSFCL. The analysis and simulation results show that the novel SSFCL has negligible impact on the power system during the normal operating stage, automatic response to the short-circuit fault, and especially low secondary voltage level during the current-limiting stage, which are of great significance to the reduction of the thyristor voltage level, the DC reactance, as well as the volume and cost of the whole SSFCL. The current-limiting effect is also tested in the simulation of a multi-machine power system with the protection of SSFCL. Last, the comparison of the simulation and experimental results proves the feasibility of the proposed SSFCL. Copyright (c) 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:Current transformer is prone to get into transient saturated during the fault in the power system. Operation performance of relay protection will be influenced severely due to serious distortion in the secondary side. An improved ESPRIT algorithm that can be applied in relay protection for anti-saturation is presented in this paper. The improved ESPRIT can accurately obtain the frequency, magnitude and phase angle of the fault current with unsaturated data segment of CTs' distorted secondary current in a relatively short time window. In order to reduce the calculation amount, singular value decomposition (SVD) is employed to determine the valid order of the signal. Moreover, the improved ESPRIT algorithm could reduce the computational load with little influence on calculative result through the dimension reduction of singular value decomposition. In order to obtain the magnitude and phase angle more accurate, AR model and least square method are employed to improve the robustness of algorithm. Finally, the accuracy of the improved ESPRIT is verified by CT's transient experiment data. The improved SEPRIT algorithm could be applied in the difference protection to avoid the malfunction by CTs' transient saturation and ensure the validity of protection.
