Abstract:The combination of pulsed corona discharges and catalyst was examined for decomposition of pure carbon dioxide in a corona reactor packed with porous γ-Al 2 O 3 pellets. The decomposition of CO 2 was greatly enhanced by packing γ-Al 2 O 3 . In the presence of γ-Al 2 O 3 , the conversion of CO 2 , yield of CO reach 23 and 15%, respectively. The CO 2 conversion increases with increasing applied voltage and decreasing gas flow rate. The maximum energy efficiency for decomposition of CO 2 reaches 318.7 g/kW hr. It was found that high surface area of γ-Al 2 O 3 and strong adsorption capacity of CO 2 on γ-Al 2 O 3 play an important role in CO 2 decomposition under corona discharges. At the same time, the presence of γ-Al 2 O 3 suppresses the reaction of CO and O.

Abstract:In this paper, the effects of C02 injection rate on the flow stabilized positive DC corona discharge in dry air are experimentally investigated. As an example of chemical reactions induced by different corona modes, NO removal is also studied in gaseous mixtures of N2+O2+CO2+NOx at atmospheric pressure and in room temperature. The transition between glow and streamer can be controlled by C02 on and off injection. 95% of NO can be removed under streamer corona discharge with an energy yield of about 12.5–25g(NO)/kWh. However, for glow corona discharge, the NO removal is negligible.

Abstract:This paper presents a two-stage hybrid plasma catalyst system for toluene decomposition in dry air. It consists of a dielectric barrier discharge reactor and a homemade Co-Mn catalyst bed reactor. At room temperature and under a bed gas hourly space velocity of up to 32233 h-1, the decomposition efficiency is about 92.4% when plasma specific energy density is around 100 J/L. With increasing the catalyst bed temperature to about 350 K, almost 100% of the toluene and the plasma generated O3 are decomposed simultaneously. The Fourier transform infrared spectra show that the major reaction byproducts are CO2. By means of X-ray powder diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and N2 physisorption diagnostics, we conclude that both Co3Mn3O4 and the lattice oxygen species play an important role in simultaneous toluene decomposition and ozone utilization.

Abstract:The influence of humidity and oxygen on decomposition of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) was investigated experimentally by a wire-cylinder pulse corona reactor at room temperature. The DMS decomposition efficiency was investigated using varying oxygen concentration (0.6%–21.0%), humidity (0%–1.0%) and different balance gas (air, N2, Ar). DMS conversion in Ar is more efficient than that in N2 and air at a fixed peak voltage. In addition, it is found that 5% oxygen is the optimum concentration in decomposition of DMS, due to higher conversion of DMS and relatively fewer yields of by products, such as O3, NO x and SO2. The highest DMS removal efficiency was achieved with the gas stream containing 0.3% H2O in air.

Abstract:The increasing utilization of CO2 for synthesizing high-value fuels or essential chemicals is a potentially effective approach to mitigating global warming and climate change. Compared to thermal catalytic CO2 conversion under harsh operating conditions (400∼500°C, 10 MPa), non-thermal plasma can overcome kinetic barriers and trigger reactions beyond thermal equilibrium at ambient temperature and pressure. In this study, the effects of operating conditions (discharge frequency, input power, and gas flow rate) and geometrical parameters (discharge length, discharge gap, and dielectric materials) have been extensively analyzed using typical cylindrical dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma. The discharge characteristics changed by operating conditions (including waveforms of applied voltage and current) are compared, indicating higher applied voltage and lower gas flow rate can strengthen the filamentary discharges. The results demonstrate CO2 conversion rate increases with the increase of applied voltage and the decrease of CO2/H2 ratio, achieving its maximum value of 43.0% at 20 mL/min. The highest energy efficiency of 3771.9 μg/kJ for CO generation is obtained at the applied voltage of 5.5 kV and gas flow rate of 40 mL/min, respectively. Besides, the structure of plasma reactor also impacts the performance of CO2 conversion. On the one hand, the discharge gap has a significant role in the variation of CO2 conversion and product selectivity, which is attributed to the electric field density and corresponding electron-induced reaction. On the other hand, the circulating water-cooling jacket was used to find out the influence of reaction temperature, which switched the product from CO to CH4. This work will pave the way for a sustainable alternative towards future CO2 conversion and utilization.

Abstract:The combination of pulsed corona discharges and catalyst was examined for conversion of pure carbon dioxide in a corona reactor packed with porous γ-Al2O3 pellets. The conversion of CO2 was enhanced by addition of γ-Al2O3. In the presence of γ-Al2O3, the conversion of CO2, yield of CO and selectivity of CO reach 23%, 15% and 70.8%. Corresponding conversion in the absence of γ-Al2O3, 3% for CO2 conversion, 2.4% for yield of CO and 66 % for selectivity of CO. The CO2 conversion increases with increasing applied voltage and decreasing gas flow rate. The optimum reactor length and diameter based on the maximum conversion of CO2 and yield of CO exist at L=125mm and 2R=26mm in the present range of experiment. The maximum energy efficiency of CO2 reaches 318.7g/kWh.

Abstract:Decomposition of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) in air was investigated experimentally by using a wire-cylinder dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. A new type of high pulse voltage source with a thyratron switch and a Blumlein pulse-forming network (BPFN) was adopted in our experiments. The maximum power output of the pulse voltage source and the maximum peak voltage were 1 kW and 100 kV, respectively. The important parameters affecting odor decomposition, including peak voltage, pulse frequency, gas flow rate, initial concentration, and humidity, which influenced the removal efficiency, were investigated. The results showed that DMS could be treated effectively and almost a 100% removal efficiency was achieved at the conditions with an initial concentration of 832 mg/m(3) and a gas flow rate of 1000 ml/min. Humidity boosts the removal efficiency and improves the energy yield (EY) greatly. The EY of 832 mg/m(3) DMS was 2.87 mg/kJ when the relative humidity was above 30%. In the case of DMS removal, the ozone and nitrogen oxides were observed in the exhaust gas. The carbon and sulfur elements of DMS were mainly converted to carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and sulfur dioxide. Moreover, sulfur was discovered in the reactor. According to the results, the optimization design for the reactor and the matching of high pulse voltage source can be reckoned.
[Scale-Up Study on Pulse Corona Discharge for the Removal of Toluene].

Abstract:The scale-up experiments of the decomposition of toluene by pulse corona discharge in wire-plate reactor were investigated. The maximum output power of pulse voltage source was 1 kW, and the maximal peak voltage was 100 kV. The experiments were conducted with a gas-flow rate of 4-16 m3 x h(-1). Different parameters which influenced on removal efficiency were investigated, such as peak voltage, pulse frequency, inlet concentration of toluene, gas-flow rate. The results showed that the removal efficiency was improved obviously when the peak field intensity was changed in the range of 9-12 kV x cm(-1); the removal efficiency 88% was obtained when gas-flow rate, peak voltage, inlet concentration of toluene, pulse frequency were 4 m3 x h(-1), 69 kV, 1180 mg x m(-3), 300 pps respectively. The energy yield of toluene was about 16 g x (kW x h)(-1); the main products of decomposition were CO2 and H2O, few of CO. Combining the removal efficiency of toluene with energy density and inlet concentration of toluene, a reaction kinetic mathematic model was developed. By this model, the decomposition rate constant of toluene was 0.00356 L x J(-1). According to the results, the optimization design for the reactor and the matching of pulse voltage source were reckoned.

Abstract:The reduction of CO2 emission is a key method for mitigating climate change. The safety of geologic storage of CO2 is still being valued. Sometimes overmuch electric energy come from clean energy, such as nuclear energy, need to be converted into chemical energy stored in hydrogen, liquid hydrocarbons, etc. CO2 can be used as the carbon resource in the energy conversion, and plasma technology can be applied. During the CO2 reforming of CH4, electric energy was converted into chemical energy stored in H2 and CO. In our experiments, more than 10% electric energy was converted into chemical energy through corona plasma technology. However, it is puzzling that the reactions always had high conversions exceeding the calculated values using equilibrium thermodynamics. Herein, we speculate that there existed a quenching mechanism in the corona plasma reactions, and it is possible to predict the highest efficiency of energy conversion via corona plasma method.

Abstract:Non-equilibrium plasma, which was engendered by dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) was used to analyze the mutual conversion between CO2 and CO. The results showed that the conversion ratio of CO increased monotonously with the increasing voltage. But CO2 was not so. Its conversion ratio reached maximum when the voltage was 3600 V in Ar system. It also showed that the existence of water molecules was more advanageous for the conversion of CO to CO2 in Air system than in oxygen system, and the conversion ratio could reach 75.8% when the relative humidity was 100%. We also discussed the energy yield and energy efficiency, and the result was that high voltage and high concentration of reactant was disadvantageous for energy utilization.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide reforming of methane via plasma reactions has the double advantage of realizing energy conversion and protecting the environment. We studied the characteristics of AC corona plasma CO2-reforming reactions at atmospheric pressure. The effects of the CH4/CO2 ratios in the feeds, discharge power, and flow rates were investigated. The H-2/CO ratios in the products mainly depended upon the CH4/CO2 ratios, and they increased from 0.21 at 0.2 CH4/CO2 to 2.15 at 2.0 CH4/CO2. The conversions of CH4 and CO2 increased with increasing discharge power, whereas they decreased with increasing flow rates. Within the tested range, the conversions of CH4 changed from 67.5 to 90.5% and the conversions of CO2 changed from 45.7 to 78.5%. The conversions obtained in the reactor below 380 K were higher than the calculated data, resulting from equilibrium thermodynamics at 890 K. Comparing the experimental results with the calculated values, we speculate that corona plasma possibly has a high-temperature character and that the plasma reactions possess an inherent quenching mechanism; i.e., the gases were rapidly cooled as they flowed out of the corona plasma area. This quenching mechanism resulted in the corona plasma reactions possessing higher conversions. The H-2/CO ratios in the products could be used to support this hypothesis.
Combination Of Non-Thermal Plasma And Activated Carbon Fibers For Decomposition Of Hydrogen Sulfide

Abstract:The combination of non-thermal plasma and activated carbon fibers for decomposition of H2S was studied. When the peak voltage of the corona reactor was 30 kv, the initial concentration of H2S was 100 mg/cu m, the concentration of H2S from corona reactor decreased to 5 mg/cu m, i.e., the removal efficiency of H2S was 95%. In the activated carbon fibers reactor, the H2S, which was not decomposed, would react with the ozone which generated by corona reactor. Therefore, the concentration of H2S was undetected before the activated carbon fibers were broken through. When H2S was decomposed in the corona reactor, SO2, NOx and ozone generated. In the activated carbon fibers reactor, the SO2 and NOx could react with ozone or be absorbed in the surface of activated carbon fibers. The ozone generated in the corona reactor reacted with H2S, SO2, NOx and reacted as the functions and in the surface of activated carbon fibers; the concentration of ozone from the activated carbon fibers reactor could be decreased very low. Abstract:The decomposition of CO2in fan-type ac glow discharge reactors coated with platinum or rhodium was studied as a function of concentration of CO2in the feed, frequency, and waveform shape. The progress of the reaction was monitored with an ion-quadrupole mass spectrometer coupled with a partial pressure analyzer. CO was the main carbonaceous product with selectivities >80%. Mixtures of 2.5, 10, and 20% CO2in He were studied and the conversion is observed to increase with decreasing CO2concentration, although the power consumed by the reactor remains relatively constant. The reaction efficiency for the reaction (proportional to yield) is observed to increase with increasing CO2concentration. The frequency has little effect on the conversion of CO2in the plasma, but the plasma power consumption is observed to decrease as the frequency is increased at constant applied voltage, resulting in an increase in reaction efficiency with increasing frequency. The conversion of CO2increases with increasing input voltage in the range 411–2050 V root mean square (rms), then levels off up to 10.91 kV rms. The plasma power shows the same trend as conversion, whereas the efficiency and excitation temperature of the plasma are observed to decrease up to 2050 V rms and then level off. The effects of sine, square, and triangular waveforms were examined and found to yield similar conversions, plasma powers, and efficiencies. The order for conversion and power is square > sine>triangular and the order for efficiency is triangular>sine≈square. CO2conversion is maximized for a square waveform and low concentrations of CO2at input voltages near 2 kV rms. Conversion is independent of the ac frequency. Conversely, maximization of reaction efficiency occurs at low input voltages (<2 kV rms) and high concentrations of CO2with a triangular waveform at frequencies in the kiloHertz range. Optimization of conditions has resulted in an efficiency of 11.4% for CO2dissociation to CO and O2.

Abstract:In the context of escalating global efforts to mitigate carbon emissions and explore sustainable energy resources, the transformation of CO2 into valuable chemicals and fuels via plasma technology has garnered significant attention. This study demonstrated a new pathway of CO2 conversion into CO and H2O2 via the bubble-enabled gas-liquid discharge driven by a nanosecond pulse. Results showed that the increased discharge frequency and larger pulse widths could enhance CO2 conversion rates and H2O2 yields, albeit potentially at the cost of reduced energy efficiency. Conversely, the rising time of pulse showed negligible impact on the process, whereas varying gas flow rates significantly altered CO and H2O2 yields, underscoring the nuanced influence of these parameters on the efficiency and selectivity of conversion processes. Through illuminating the dynamics of bubble discharge-assisted CO2 transformation, this study contributes to the broader understanding of gas-liquid discharge driven by nanosecond pulse, underlining its potential for addressing environmental and energy challenges.energy challenges.

DBD Plasma Combined with Different Foam Metal Electrodes for CO2 Decomposition: Experimental Results and DFT Validations

Abstract:In the last few years, due to the large amount of greenhouse gas emissions causing environmental issue like global warming, methods for the full consumption and utilization of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2) have attracted great attention. In this study, a packed-bed dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) coaxial reactor has been developed and applied to split CO2 into industrial fuel carbon monoxide (CO). Different packing materials (foam Fe, Al, and Ti) were placed into the discharge gap of the DBD reactor, and then CO2 conversion was investigated. The effects of power, flow velocity, and other discharge characteristics of CO2 conversion were studied to understand the influence of the filling catalysts on CO2 splitting. Experimental results showed that the filling of foam metals in the reactor caused changes in discharge characteristics and discharge patterns, from the original filamentary discharge to the current filamentary discharge as well as surface discharge. Compared with the maximum CO2 conversion of 21.15% and energy efficiency of 3.92% in the reaction tube without the foam metal materials, a maximum CO2 decomposition rate of 44.84%, 44.02%, and 46.61% and energy efficiency of 6.86%, 6.19%, and 8.85% were obtained in the reaction tubes packed with foam Fe, Al, and Ti, respectively. The CO2 conversion rate for reaction tubes filled with the foam metal materials was clearly enhanced compared to the non-packed tubes. It could be seen that the foam Ti had the best CO2 decomposition rate among the three foam metals. Furthermore, we used density functional theory to further verify the experimental results. The results indicated that CO2 adsorption had a lower activation energy barrier on the foam Ti surface. The theoretical calculation was consistent with the experimental results, which better explain the mechanism of CO2 decomposition.
High-Pressure CO$_2$ Dissociation with Nanosecond Pulsed Discharges

Abstract:The efficiency of the conversion of CO$_2$ into CO with nanosecond repetitively pulsed discharges (NRP) is investigated in a high pressure batch reactor. Stable discharges are obtained at up to 12~bar. By-products of CO$_2$ splitting are measured with gas chromatography. The energy efficiency is determined for a range of processing times, pulse energy, and fill pressures. The energy efficiency is found to be approximately 20% and is only weakly sensitive to the plasma operating parameters, i.e., the extent of CO$_2$ conversion is almost linearly-dependent on the specific energy input. A conversion rate of up to 14% is achieved with an energy efficiency of 23%. For long processing times, a drop in efficiency is observed, due to the increasing significance of recombination reactions, as described by a macroscopic kinetic mechanism. Reaction pathways that are believed to play an important role in nanosecond pulsed discharges are discussed. It appears that vibrational excitation does not play a significant role in CO$_2$ conversion in these types of short-pulse discharge. Results also draw attention to the relative importance of two particular electronic excitation reactions.

Abstract:Capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) and transforming it into valuable fuels offers a dual benefit: the potential to reduce atmospheric CO2 levels and decrease our dependency on fossil fuels. Plasma‐assisted CO2 to carbon monoxide (CO) conversion stands out within the various CO2 recycling methods, with research primarily emphasizing its energy efficiency and conversion efficacy. However, investigations of CO2 conversion under real air conditions are relatively scarce, and the effects of the other atmospheric molecules on the CO2 conversion process require further exploration. We have induced plasma chemical reactions by generating ultrashort pulse laser filaments inside a sealed‐off cavity with variable air pressures. Simultaneously, we applied mid‐infrared laser absorption spectroscopy to monitor the time evolution of the reaction products. The peak CO2‐to‐CO conversion ratio was achieved at an air pressure of 8000 Pa, which resulted in a CO concentration of 82 ppm. The experimental results suggested that nitrogen (N2) plays a promoting role in CO2‐to‐CO conversion, while the presence of oxygen (O2) seems to hinder the process. The hydroxyl radical (OH) arising from water molecules (H2O) limits the accumulation of CO at lower air pressures. However, at higher air pressures, the reduced OH radical concentration shows negligible impact on the CO2‐to‐CO conversion ratios. In addition, the study revealed that atmospheric plasmas produce a high concentration of hydrogen cyanide (HCN), which is directly proportional to the levels of ambient humidity. This research contributes to the development of strategies to mitigate the production of harmful gases like HCN in CO2 conversion, thereby promoting the ecofriendly conversion of atmospheric CO2.

Abstract:The influence of balance gas mixture on decomposition of dimethyl sulfide was investigated experimentally by a wire-cylinder pulse corona reactor at room temperature. A new type of high voltage pulse generator with a thyratron switch and a Blumlein pulse-forming network was used in the experiments. The experiments were conducted at a fixed pulse frequency of 100pps. The DMS decomposition efficiency as well as energy yield was investigated using varying oxygen concentration (0.6–21.0%), humidity (0–1.0%) and different balance gas (air, N2, Ar). Breakdown voltage of DMS in Ar is lower than that of DMS in N2, both of which are proportional to the gas pressures. The conversion of DMS in Ar is more efficient than that in N2 and air at a fixed peak voltage. In addition, it is found that 5% oxygen is the optimum concentration in decomposition of DMS, due to higher conversion of DMS and relatively fewer yields of by products, such as O3, NOx and SO2. The highest DMS removal efficiency where the energy yield was 1.24mgkJ−1 was achieved with the gas stream containing 0.3% H2O in air.

Abstract:CO2 conversion was controlled by the electron‐induced reactions and sensitive to the discharge pattern and the electron density. The type of the carrier gas had a significant effect on the electron density and further the CO2 conversion. In contrast, the formation of the products was governed by the thermo‐induced chemistry. Plasma‐induced CO2 hydrogenation process has received much attention, while the related plasma chemistry has not been profoundly explored. Herein, electron‐induced and thermochemical effects on CO2 hydrogenation in a dielectric barrier discharge reactor were investigated. The temperatures for the discharge pattern transition for CO2/H2, CO2/H2/N2, CO2/H2/Ar, and CO2/H2/He mixtures were 623, 623, 600, and 600 K, respectively. CO2 conversion was controlled by electron‐induced reactions and was sensitive to discharge pattern and electron density but not electron energy. In contrast, product formation was governed by the thermo‐induced chemistry. These results are useful for a better understanding of plasma‐induced CO2 hydrogenation.
