Abstract:After the three towers of a wet flue-gas desulfurization system was grouped into one, there emerged the problem of a decrease in desulfurization efficiency and gypsum quality. To cope with this problem, an improved scheme was put forward, which consists in dividing the circulation oxidation tank at the bottom of the absorption tower into an oxidation tank and a material-feed tank. Moreover, tests were conducted on a parallel-flow falling-film wet desulfurization plant before and after the implementation of the improved scheme. The results of the tests indicate that the improved desulfurization plant has alleviated the contradiction between the desulfurizaton efficiency and the gypsum quality. The high pH value of the material-feed tank makes it possible to maintain a high desulfurization efficiency in the tower, while the low pH value of the oxidation tank is favorable to the dissolution of limestone and the oxidation of SIV, thereby enhancing the quality of gypsum.

Abstract:The removal of chlorides from washing leachate of MSWI fly ash is investigated in this study.A preliminary removal of chloride ions from washing leachate proceeds by adding calcium hydroxide and sodium aluminate and then reverse osmosis is used for further membrane separation.The effect on the removal of chlorine ion,such aswashing liquid to solid ratio,operating pressure and pH,were explored.The results show that the preliminary treatment removes about 50％ of the chloride ion from the washing leachate by chemical precipitation and then attains 93.5％ by membrane separation.The combined process resulted in a total chloride removal efficiency of 96.74％,resulting in the effluents meeting the standards of the wastewater treatment.

Abstract:A/O-two-stage Fenton/BAF process was used to reconstruct the leachate treatment system of a waste incineration power plant in Guangdong Province.The results indicated that the treatment efficiency and stability of A/O unit could be improved by aerobic reflux.When the total reflux radio was 1 ∶ 2,the average concentrations of the effluent COD and ammonia nitrogen were about 1 100 mg/L and 50 mg/L respectively,and the corresponding removal rates were all over 95%.The dosages of H2O2(27.5%) in two-stage Fenton unit were 4 mL/L and 1 mL/L respectively,while the dosages of FeSO4 were 8 g/L and 2 g/L respectively.When the HRTs of two-stage BAF were 8 h and 5 h respectively,the effluent COD,ammonia nitrogen,color and SS were less than 90 mg/L,3 mg/L,25 times and 15 mg/L respectively,meeting the first class criteria(the second period) of the Guangdong Province local standard Discharge Limits of Water Pollutants(DB 44/26-2001).

Abstract:A large amount of saturated Ca(OH) 2,CaCl2 and high strength of organic chlorides existed in the wastewater from conventional chlorohydrin propylene epoxide production process in a chemical company in Shandong.As a result,the treatment performance of the first stage of this wastewater with the capacity 30 000 m3/d was poor and unstable.Even though a number of treatment modules including primary sedimentation tank/activated sludge aeration tank/secondary settling tank/contact oxidation tank/coagulation sedimentation tank were combined in the first stage of the project.Therefore,it was necessary to upgrade this treatment process to a high level.After rebuilding a middle tank/ABR/aerobic tank between secondary settling tank and contact oxidation tank,setting up anoxic HRT ∶ aerobic HRT as 3 ∶ 2,and controlling MLSS over 15 g/L,the treatment performance of the upgraded process was stable and the effluent reached the Integrated Wastewater Discharge Standard in Xiaoqing River Basin of Shandong Prvince(DB 37/656-2006).

Abstract:A novel combined process of Fenton oxidation, submerged membrane bioreactor (SMBR) and reverse osmosis (RO) was applied as an appropriate option for old municipal landfill leachate treatment. Fenton process was designed to intensively solve the problem of non-biodegradable organic pollutant removal and low biodegradability of leachate, although the removal of ammonia-nitrogen was similar to 10%. After SMBR treatment, it not only presented a higher removal efficiency of organics, but also exhibited high ammonia-nitrogen removal of 80% on average. The variation of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) content, zeta potential, and particle size of flocs after Fenton effluent continually fed in SMBR was found to be benefit for alleviating membrane fouling. Finally, three kinds of RO membranes (RE. CPA, and BW) were applied to treat SMBR effluents and successfully met wastewater re-utilization requirement. Compared with simple RO process, the troublesome membrane fouling can be effectively reduced in the combined process. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Dechlorination of coal-fired flue gas is a novel approach for realizing zero discharge of desulfurization wastewater. The core principle is to convert the HCl in the flue gas into chloride salt, which will migrate into the fly ash. Pilot-scale experiments were conducted to research the migration and agglomeration of chlorine in actual coal-fired flue gas in a power plant. The results indicate that the HCl removal efficiency in flue gas can rise to 70% at a Na/Cl molar ratio of 7.58 when using NaOH solution with clean water or a ratio of 8.93 when using NaOH solution with desulfurization wastewater. XPS shows that the characteristic peak of chloride in the dechlorinated ash is much more pronounced than that in the original ash. The content of inorganic chloride increases significantly with increasing Na/Cl or the utilization of desulfurization wastewater. SEM–EDS indicates that the various salts agglomerated on the fly ash surface notably increase after dechlorination. The contents of Na, Ca, Mg, Fe and S in the ash increase remarkably, especially with desulfurization wastewater. The chloride salts generated by flue gas dechlorination and the pollutants in the desulfurization wastewater are effectively agglomerated with the fly ash.

Abstract:Removal efficiency of chlorine in waste incineration fly ash was studied through washing process. Factors influencing removal of chlorine and chlorides such as liquid-to-solid ratio (L/S),quality of process water,chemical addition and dissolution time were investigated. Also high temperature volatilization of residual chloride in the treated fly ash was tested. The results showed that more than 85% of total chlorine in fly ash was washed out with L/S=3,and increased L/S value would increase removal efficiency of chlorine. Residual chlorine in treated fly ash had evident volatility at high temperature,and residual chlorine was kept at 0. 9%-1. 7%.

Abstract:Due to the expanded production and the design problem existing in the original wastewater treatment process in Shuangcheng Chrysanthemum Monosodium Glutamate Factory,the effluent quality could't meet the standards.After some technological transformations applying in the original wastewater treatment process,the system could run stably and reliably during the two-month trial operation.The removal rates of COD_ Cr , TN, TOC and NH_3-N in the system were over 99.5%,98.8%,99.9% and 99%,respectively. The effluent was superior to the first level standard stipulated in "Wastewater Drainage Comprehensive Standards" (GB8978-1996).

Abstract:The upgrading and retrofitting project of Chongzhou WWTP required the effluent quality to meet the first level A criteria specified in Discharge Standard of Pollutants for Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant(GB 18918-2002).After comparison of various schemes,hydraulic transformation for the oxidation ditch and sludge reservoir basins was performed,and rotary fibre disk filtration process was added on the basis of retaining the existing A2/C oxidation ditch system.The project had characteristics of low civil engineering investment and short construction cycle.The operation monitoring showed that the SS was significantly reduced,and the BOD5 and TP were decreased.The effluent quality was better than the first level A criteria.

Abstract:The existing wastewater treatment plant for removing nitrogen and phosphorus by traditional AAO process in Xi'an Province was modified and upgraded. This modification was conducted without requisition of land,no new reaction tanks,and no changes of the main structures and pipe network. On the premise of keeping the wastewater treatment plant in normal operation condition,and taking advantage of the existing treatment equipment fully,the moving bed bio-membrane reactor (MBBR)technology was applied into the anoxic and anaerobic tanks. Hydraulic retention time (HRT)of the anoxic tank was extended to improve nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiencies,meanwhile,super fine grille was applied to remove suspended solids (SS). The results show that final TP,TN and SS of the effluent are 0. 32,8. 0,7 mg/L respectively,which meet A level requirement of Discharge Standard of Pollutants for Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant (GB 18918—2002).

Abstract:In southern China, the inflow of water to wastewater treatment plants has a lower concentration of organic matter. This causes treatment plants to face issues in the denitrification and phosphorus removal processes such as deficient carbon sources, high energy consumption, and unstable nitrogen removal. To resolve these issues, we propose the reconstruction of the internal reflux port, improvement of the internal reflux ratio to 200%, the addition of carbon source to anoxic zone, and the addition of phosphorus removal agents in secondary settling tank. The results of study show significantly improved efficiency of nitrogen and phosphorus removal, which ensures the stability of subsequent supply of reused water.

Abstract:Waterwashing is an important pretreatment method for the reuse of municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash. However, the presence of high levels of chlorides and small amounts of sulfides in the waterwashing solution makes it difficult to treat and reuse. Therefore, in this study, a calcium sulfate- Friedel's salt precipitation method was used to dechlorinate and desulfurize in the MSWI fly ash washing solution. This paper mainly focused on the chloride removal, and the effects of factors such as reagent ratios, temperature, and reaction time on chloride removal rate and the two-stage dechlorination and desulfurization process were optimized. The experimental results indicated that when the ratio in the first stage was n(Ca):n(Al):n(Cl) = 3:1.5:1, and in the second stage, n(Ca):n(Al):n(Cl) = 8:4:1, a chloride removal rate of up to 90.5% and a sulfide removal rate of over 99.88% could be obtained. The deposited particles were analyzed by using FE-SEM, XRD, and FTIR to investigate their size, morphology, phase composition, and functional groups. The study revealed that excessively high or low reagent ratios could reduce the interlayer spacing of Friedel's salt. Additionally, high temperatures led to the decomposition of Friedel's salt, and the dechlorination efficiency was affected.

Abstract:A new type of safe continuous production process of sodium hypochlorite was designed for ensuring the safety of the industrial system.The process featured using the negative pressure of Venturi tube to continuously absorb the chlorine gas generated in electrolysis and continuously produce sodium hypochlorite solution.In order to prevent safe accidents,a safety interlock system was set in the control system and a safe bursting diaphragm was set in the production equipment.The result showed that the production system run stably.

Abstract:The Taxia wastewater treatment plant of nanping City had a treatment capacity of 5×104 m3 ·d-1.The process was designed as SBR initially and then optimized to A2/O in 2006.The technological features,the design and operating parameters were introduced.The total sludge age was around 15～25 d while the mixed-liquid and sludge was recycled to improve the NH3-N and TP removal efficiency.The influent was domestic and industrial mixed sewage(about 12:1).The COD and BOD5 ranged 180～400 mg·L-1 and 30～160 mg·L-1,respectively.After the process optimization,The average removal efficiency of COD、BOD5、SS、NH3-N、TN and TP was achieved to be 90%、96%、95%、90%、64% and 64%,respectively.The effluent quality reached the first level B criteria specified in the discharge standard of pollutants for municipal wastewater treatment plant(GB 18918-2002),proving that A2/O process is feasible and effective in treating combined sewage with high organics concentrations.

Abstract:The HCl emission before and after the precipitator of pulverized coal boiler in a power plant has been measured, and dechlorination test in combustion on flucdized bed of a municipal solid waste(MSW) incinarator and a chaingrate stocker being carried out. Results of study show that: (1) the chlorine contained wastes are the main source of HCl emission from MSW incinerator; (2) the concentration and rate of chloride emission from fluidized bed are lower, the chlorine fixation effect of single lime base absorbents is obviously better than that in chaingrate stocker, the kinds and adding quantity of dechlorination agents have a certain influence upon dechlorination effectiveness; (3) the temperature of combustion is higher and the fuel retaining time is longer in industrial chaingrate stocker, hence hightemperature resisting dechlorination agents must be used in combustion dechlorination to solve the redecomposition problem of dechlorination product CaCl_2; (4) for industrial chaingrate stocker, a twostage dechlorination method of semipremixing and semiinjecting the dechlor ination agents can make the retaining time of dechlorination products in the furnace to be greatly shortened, lowering effectively the decomposition rate of dechlorination products, hence obtaining better effectivenecs of dechlorination.
Chlorine Reuse in UV/Electrochemical Oxidation to Advance Sewage Cotreatment of Landfill Leachate

Abstract:Landfill leachate cotreatment with municipal sewage remains a widespread practice in waste management. However, the quality of the resulting effluent is often compromised by dissolved organic matter (DOM) from leachate, especially when it exhibits high ultraviolet absorbance at 254 nm (UV254). While degrading the DOM through oxidation is a promising approach, substantial chemical dosing is required for landfill leachate. An emerging alternative is electrochemical oxidation with ultraviolet radiation (UV/EO), which generates chlorine and its derived radicals in situ. Yet, prolonged UV/EO introduces concerns of residual chlorine accumulation and consequent toxicity. In response, we adapted UV/EO to reuse the residual chlorine, wherein partially replacing the treated leachate with untreated volumes reduced the UV254 of the subsequent batch. The energy efficiency of the chlorine-reuse process was optimized by using the response surface methodology, adjusting the applied current density and Reynolds number. We incorporated a UV dechlorination unit in sequence, eliminating formulas recalcitrant to UV/EO and resulting in an overall 81% reduction in UV254. Particularly in areas with established cotreatment infrastructures, this approach advances landfill leachate management, having demonstrated minimal risks of acute toxicity and genotoxicity upon discharge with municipal sewage at 3% v/v.

Abstract:The effluent quality from a domestic sewage treatment project in Shenzhen City has reached the first criteria specified in Integrated Wastewater Discharge Standard(GB 8978-1996).To utilize the effluent as the cooling water of air-conditioner,the previous process was reconstructed by a flat-sheet membrane bioreactor,and the functional division of the original treatment structures was conducted.In addition,the coagulation method is used for phosphorus removal to make the effluent phosphorus meet the standard.After the reconstruction,the effluent quality meets the requirement in the Reuse of Urban Recycling Water―Water Quality Standard for Industrial Uses(GB/T 19923-2005).The operation cost is 1.40 yuan/m3.

Abstract:A set of middle-pressure acetylene plant is rebuilt into a low-pressure one with application of a new purification technology.The original middle-pressure generator is changed into a low-pressure equipment.In the purifying process,the acetylene is boosted first through a water-ring pump and purified with sulphuric-acid in stead of sodium hypocholorite and then, is circulated due to its own gravity in stead of the circulating pump. The mixing of acetylene with purification agent is realized with a fluid jet.The operation results show that the purity of acetylene is raised from less than 98% to 99.5%, investment,consumption of raw materials as well as labour intensity are greatly lowered,and the safety is improved.The rebuilding and,especially, the application of the new purification technology make the process one of remarkably comprehensive benefit.
