Abstract:In the article we present necessary and sufficient conditions for a function involving the logarithm of the gamma function to be completely monotonic and apply these results to bound the gamma function $\Gamma(x)$, the $n$-th harmonic number $\sum_{k=1}^n\frac1k$, and the factorial $n!$.

Abstract:The note is concerned with the functional equation which is a generalised form of the so-called polynomial-like iterative equation. We investigate the existence of nondecreasing convex (both usual and higher order) solutions to this equation on open intervals using the Schauder fixed point theorem. The results supplement those proved by Trif (Aquat Math, 79:315–327, 2010) for the polynomial-like iterative equation by generalising them to a greater extent. This assertion is supported by some examples illustrating their applicability.

Abstract:In the paper the author provides necessary and sufficient conditions on $a$ for the function $\frac{1}{2}\ln(2\pi)-x+\bigl(x-\frac{1}{2}\bigr)\ln x-\ln\Gamma(x)+\frac1{12}{\psi'(x+a)}$ and its negative to be completely monotonic on $(0,\infty)$, where $a\ge0$ is a real number, $\Gamma(x)$ is the classical gamma function, and $\psi(x)=\frac{\Gamma'(x)}{\Gamma(x)}$ is the di-gamma function. As applications, some known results and new inequalities are derived.
