Abstract:This short note gives an elementary alternative proof for a theorem of Danilov and Koshevoy on Minkowski summation and unimodularity in discrete convex analysis. It is intended to disseminate this fundamental theorem and make its proof accessible to researchers in optimization and operations research.

Abstract:In this short survey we want to present some of the impact of Minkowski's successive minima within Convex and Discrete Geometry. Originally related to the volume of an $o$-symmetric convex body, we point out relations of the successive minima to other functionals, as e.g., the lattice point enumerator or the intrinsic volumes and we present some old and new conjectures about them. Additionally, we discuss an application of successive minima to a version of Siegel's lemma.

Abstract:The Brunn-Minkowski Theorem asserts that $\mu_d(A+B)^{1/d}\geq \mu_d(A)^{1/d}+\mu_d(B)^{1/d}$ for convex bodies $A,\,B\subseteq \R^d$, where $\mu_d$ denotes the $d$-dimensional Lebesgue measure. It is well-known that equality holds if and only if $A$ and $B$ are homothetic, but few characterizations of equality in other related bounds are known. Let $H$ be a hyperplane. Bonnesen later strengthened this bound by showing $$\mu_d(A+B)\geq (M^{1/(d-1)}+N^{1/(d-1)})^{d-1}(\frac{\mu_d(A)}{M}+\frac{\mu_d(B)}{N}),$$ where $M=\sup\{\mu_{d-1}((\mathbf x+H)\cap A)\mid \mathbf x\in \R^d\}$ and $N=\sup\{\mu_{d-1}((\mathbf y+H)\cap B)\mid \mathbf y\in \R^d\}$. Standard compression arguments show that the above bound also holds when $M=\mu_{d-1}(\pi(A))$ and $N=\mu_{d-1}(\pi(B))$, where $\pi$ denotes a projection of $\mathbb R^d$ onto $H$, which gives an alternative generalization of the Brunn-Minkowski bound. In this paper, we characterize the cases of equality in this later bound, showing that equality holds if and only if $A$ and $B$ are obtained from a pair of homothetic convex bodies by `stretching' along the direction of the projection, which is made formal in the paper. When $d=2$, we characterize the case of equality in the former bound as well.

Abstract:We give the structure of discrete two-dimensional finite sets $A,\,B\subseteq \R^2$ which are extremal for the recently obtained inequality $|A+B|\ge (\frac{|A|}{m}+\frac{|B|}{n}-1)(m+n-1)$, where $m$ and $n$ are the minimum number of parallel lines covering $A$ and $B$ respectively. Via compression techniques, the above bound also holds when $m$ is the maximal number of points of $A$ contained in one of the parallel lines covering $A$ and $n$ is the maximal number of points of $B$ contained in one of the parallel lines covering $B$. When $m,\,n\geq 2$, we are able to characterize the case of equality in this bound as well. We also give the structure of extremal sets in the plane for the projection version of Bonnesen's sharpening of the Brunn-Minkowski inequality: $\mu (A+B)\ge (\mu(A)/m+\mu(B)/n)(m+n)$, where $m$ and $n$ are the lengths of the projections of $A$ and $B$ onto a line.

Abstract:In a seminal paper "Volumen und Oberfläche" (1903), Minkowski introduced the basic notion of mixed volumes and the corresponding inequalities that lie at the heart of convex geometry. The fundamental importance of characterizing the extremals of these inequalities was already emphasized by Minkowski himself, but has to date only been resolved in special cases. In this paper, we completely settle the extremals of Minkowski's quadratic inequality, confirming a conjecture of R. Schneider. Our proof is based on the representation of mixed volumes of arbitrary convex bodies as Dirichlet forms associated to certain highly degenerate elliptic operators. A key ingredient of the proof is a quantitative rigidity property associated to these operators.

This paper establishes similar statements for some classes of discrete sets in discrete convex analysis, such as integrally convex sets, L-natural-convex sets, and M-natural-convex sets.

Abstract:In this note, we study Bézout type inequalities for mixed volumes and Minkowski sums of convex bodies in . We first give a new proof and we extend inequalities of Jian Xiao on mixed discriminants. Then, we use the mass transport method to deduce some Bézout type inequalities for mixed volumes. Finally, we apply these inequalities to obtain Bézout type inequalities for Minkowski sums.

Abstract:Sumset estimates, which provide bounds on the cardinality of sumsets of finite sets in a group, form an essential part of the toolkit of additive combinatorics. In recent years, probabilistic or entropic analogs of many of these inequalities were introduced. We study analogues of these sumset estimates in the context of convex geometry and Lebesgue measure on ${\mathbb R}^n$. First, we observe that, with respect to Minkowski summation, volume is supermodular to arbitrary order on the space of convex bodies. Second, we explore sharp constants in the convex geometry analogues of variants of the Pl\"unnecke-Ruzsa inequalities. In the last section of the paper, we provide connections of these inequalities to the classical Rogers-Shephard inequality.

Abstract:In this paper we settle long-standing questions regarding the combinatorial complexity of Minkowski sums of polytopes: We give a tight upper bound for the number of faces of a Minkowski sum, including a characterization of the case of equality. We similarly give a (tight) upper bound theorem for mixed faces of Minkowski sums. This has a wide range of applications and generalizes the classical the Upper Bound Theorems of McMullen and Stanley. Our main tool is relative Stanley--Reisner theory, a powerful generalization of the algebraic theory of simplicial complexes inaugurated by Hochster, Reisner, and Stanley. A key feature of our theory is the ability to accomodate topological as well as combinatorial restrictions. We illustrate this by providing several simplicial isoperimetric and reverse isoperimetric inequalities.

Quotients of M-convex sets and M-convex functions

Abstract:We unify the study of quotients of matroids, polymatroids, valuated matroids and strong maps of submodular functions in the framework of Murota's discrete convex analysis. As a main result, we compile a list of ten equivalent characterizations of quotients for M-convex sets, generalizing existing formulations for (poly)matroids and submodular functions. We also initiate the study of quotients of M-convex functions, constructing a hierarchy of four separate characterizations. Our investigations yield new insights into the fundamental operation of induction, as well as the structure of linking sets and linking functions, which are generalizations of linking systems and bimatroids.

Abstract:The Brunn-Minkowski theory is the heart of quantitative convexity. It had its origins in Minkowski's joining his notion of mixed volumes with the Brunn-Minkowski inequality. One of Minkowski's major contributions to the theory was to show how this theory could be developed from a few basic concepts: support functions, Minkowski combinations, and mixed volumes. Abstract:In this paper, we introduce two moduli of w*-semidenting points and characterise the Mazur Intersection Property (MIP) and the Uniform MIP (UMIP) in terms of these moduli. We show that a property slightly stronger than UMIP already implies uniform convexity of the dual. This may lead to a possible approach towards answering the long standing open question whether the UMIP implies the existence of an equivalent uniformly convex renorming. We also obtain the condition for stability of the UMIP under $\ell_p$-sums.

Abstract:In this paper, we generalize Minkowski's theorem. This theorem is usually stated for a centrally symmetric convex body and a lattice both included in $\mathbb{R}^n$. In some situations, one may replace the lattice by a more general set for which a notion of density exists. In this paper, we prove a Minkowski theorem for Meyer sets, which bounds from below the frequency of differences appearing in the Meyer set and belonging to a centrally symmetric convex body. In the later part of the paper, we develop quite natural applications of this theorem to Diophantine approximation and to discretization of linear maps.

Abstract:Consider a sum of convex functions, where the only information known about each individual summand is the location of a minimizer. In this work, we give an exact characterization of the set of possible minimizers of the sum. Our results cover several types of assumptions on the summands, such as smoothness or strong convexity. Our main tool is the use of necessary and sufficient conditions for interpolating the considered function classes, which leads to shorter and more direct proofs in comparison with previous work. We also address the setting where each summand minimizer is assumed to lie in a unit ball, and prove a tight bound on the norm of any minimizer of the sum.
