Abstract:Li-La-Zr-O thin films were successfully fabricated using a sot-gel spin coating method, and the effects of altering the annealing temperature and the number of layers of the films on electrolyte conductivity were studied. Using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the characteristics of these films were investigated as a function of annealing temperature and the numbers of layers of the film. With these methods, an amorphous structure and a smooth surface on the films were revealed. The thin film's ionic conductivity was investigated by impedance analysis. The results show that the ionic conductivity of the films decreases with an increase of the annealing temperature, from 1.67 x 10(-6) S cm(-1) for 600 degrees C annealing to 8.53 x 10(-7) S cm(-1) for 800 degrees C annealing. The influence of film thickness on conductivity was investigated and the conductivity followed an inverse u-shaped curve with increasing film thickness. We propose that Li-La-Zr-O thin films may be promising solid electrolytes for solid-state lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:The electrochemical performance of lithium ion batteries is closely related to the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film formed on anode surface. Despite the widespread commercialization of graphite anodes, SEI still suffers from unsatisfactory stability, leading to gradual loss of active lithium ions and capacity degradation of batteries. Here organic small molecular salts with unsaturated bonds and diverse anions are coated on graphite particles and work as substrates to form a modified SEI. The C=C double bond-containing organic salts, sodium acrylate (SA), sodium vinylsulfonate (SVS) and vinyl sodium phosphate (VSP), possessing carboxylate, sulfonate and phosphate groups, respectively, are rationally selected and their effects on the SEI and electrochemical properties of graphite anodes are systematically investigated. SVS modified graphite generates a SEI film with high flexibility, good compactness and lithium ions conductivity owning to the in-situ polymerization of carbon double bonds and polarity of ionic sulfonate groups. Accordingly, the first coulombic efficiency, rate capability and cycle life of graphite anodes are improved in both half cell and LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2-based full cell testing. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Solvent-mediated routes have emerged as an effective, scalable, and low-temperature method to fabricate sulfide-based solid-state electrolytes. However, tuning the synthesis conditions to optimize the electrolyte's morphology, structure, and electrochemical properties is still underexplored. Here, we report a new class of composite solid electrolytes (SEs) containing amorphous Li3PS4 synthesized in situ with a poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) binder using a one-pot, solvent-mediated route. The solvent and thermal processing conditions have a dramatic impact on the Li3PS4 structure. Conducting the synthesis in tetrahydrofuran resulted in crystalline β-Li3PS4 whereas acetonitrile led to amorphous Li3PS4. Annealing at 140 °C increased the Li+ conductivity of an amorphous composite (Li3PS4 + 1 wt % PEO) by 3 orders of magnitude (e.g., from 4.5 × 10–9 to 8.4 × 10–6 S/cm at room temperature) because of: (i) removal of coordinated solvent and (ii) rearrangement of the polyanionic network to form P2S74– and PS43– moieties. The PEO content in these composites should be limited to 1–5 wt % to ensure reasonable Li+ conductivity (e.g., up to 1.1 × 10–4 S/cm at 80 °C) while providing enough binder to facilitate scalable processing. Abstract:Amorphous Li–La–Zr–O (LLZO) solid-state electrolyte thin films are promising alternatives to the well-established lithium phosphorus oxynitride (LiPON) electrolyte for all-solid-state lithium batteries due to their potentially higher Li-ion conductivity and stability. Herein, the enhancement methodology in the ionic conductivity of amorphous LLZO-based thin films is investigated. By doping with Ta, the conductivity of the amorphous LLZO film at 30 °C (3.9 × 10–7 S cm–1) can be enhanced by up to an order of magnitude (2.6 × 10–6 S cm–1), ascribed to tuning Li conduction in local near-order LLZO nanodomains. On that basis, an isomeric Li–La–Zr–Ta–O (LLZTO) amorphous–crystalline composite thin film is prepared via incorporating cubic LLZTO particles into the amorphous LLZTO matrix. The composite film with 10 wt % cubic LLZTO filler can further achieve an ionic conductivity of 0.8 × 10–5 S cm–1 at 30 °C, which is comparable to the best values obtained for the state-of-art LLZO-based thin films. Abstract:Thin-film solid electrolytes with wide electrochemical stability windows are required to develop solid-state lithium (Li) metal batteries with high energy densities. In this work, free-standing Li3InCl6 (30 μm)|Li6PS5Cl (30 μm) bilayer thin films are prepared by slurry casting, drying, and lamination. This combination of solid electrolytes is stable at both the cathode interface (high voltages) and anode interface (low voltages). The bilayer thin films exhibit >10× lower area-specific resistance than thick (∼1 mm) pellets fabricated by traditional powder pressing. The free-standing bilayer electrolytes are laminated onto electrodeposited LiCoO2 cathodes. Subsequently a Li–In anode is laminated on top of the stack, and stable cycling of all-solid-state batteries is demonstrated. Because of reduced ohmic losses, cells fabricated with thin-film electrolytes exhibit lower cell polarization and improved rate capability compared with cells with a traditional pellet geometry. This study offers a general strategy to fabricate free-standing bilayer thin-film solid electrolytes for high-energy-density solid-state batteries.

Abstract:A new sol-gel route has been applied to prepare Al2O3 dense films using Al(NO3)(3)center dot 9H(2)O as a raw material and acetylacetone (AcAc) as a chelating agent. The research results show that AcAc and aluminium form a complex compound in the solution, which makes the sol very stable. A small amount of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is added to the mixture solution as an anticracking agent. PVA not only decreases effectively the surface tension of the sol but also mitigates the decomposition of the gel films during calcination. The thin films fabricated by spin coating method after sintering at 650 degrees C for 2 h are amorphous. Atomic force microscope and field emission scanning electron microscope images of the films reveal a crack free surface and a dense cross-section. The dielectric films have a low leakage current density in an electric field. To sum up, this new sol-gel route provides a great promising method using cheap inorganic salt Al(NO3)(3)center dot 9H(2)O to synthesise the dense alumina thin films.
Solvent-Mediated Synthesis and Characterization of Li3InCl6 Electrolytes for All-Solid-State Li-Ion Battery Applications

Abstract:Superionic halides have attracted widespread attention as solid electrolytes due to their excellent ionic conductivity, soft texture, and stability toward high-voltage electrode materials. Among them, Li3InCl6 has aroused interest since it can be easily synthesized in water or ethanol. However, investigations into the influence of solvents on both the crystal structure and properties remain unexplored. In this work, Li3InCl6 is synthesized by three different solvents: water, ethanol, and water-ethanol mixture, and the difference in properties has been studied. The results show that the product obtained by the ethanol solvent demonstrates the largest unit cell parameters with more vacancies, which tend to crystallize on the (131) plane and provide the 3D isotropic network migration for lithium-ions. Thus, it exhibits the highest ionic conductivity (1.06 mS cm-1) at room temperature and the lowest binding energy (0.272 eV). The assembled all-solid-state lithium metal batteries (ASSLMBs) employing Li3InCl6 electrolytes demonstrate a high initial discharge capacity of 153.9 mA h g-1 at 0.1 C (1 C = 170 mA h g-1) and the reversible capacity retention rate can reach 82.83% after 50 cycles. This work studies the difference in ionic conductivity between Li3InCl6 electrolytes synthesized by different solvents, which can provide a reference for the future synthesis of halide electrolytes and enable their practical application in halide-based ASSLMBs with a high energy density.

Abstract:The host structure of polymers significantly influences ion transport and interfacial stability of electrolytes, dictating battery cycle life and safety for solid-state lithium metal batteries. Despite promising properties of ethylene oxide-based electrolytes, their typical clamp-like coordination geometry leads to crowd solvation sheath and overly strong interactions between Li + and electrolytes, rendering difficult dissociation of Li + and unfavorable solid electrolyte interface（SEI）. Herein, we explore weakly solvating characteristics of polyacetal electrolytes owing to their alternately changing intervals between –O– coordinating sites in the main chain. Such structural asymmetry leads to unique distorted helical solvation sheath, and can effectively reduce Li + -electrolyte binding and tune Li + desolvation kinetics in the insitu formed polymer electrolytes, yielding anion-derived SEI and dendrite-free Li electrodeposition.Combining with photoinitiated cationic ring-opening polymerization, polyacetal electrolytes can be instantly formed within 5 min at the surface of electrode, with high segmental chain motion and well adapted interfaces. Such in-situ polyacetal electrolytes enabled more than 1300-h of stable lithium electrodeposition and prolonged cyclability over 200 cycles in solid-state batteries at ambient temperatures,demonstrating the vital role of molecular structure in changing solvating behavior and Li deposition stability for high-performance electrolytes.

Abstract:Amorphous LiCo1/3Mn1/3Ni1/3O2 thin films were deposited on the NASICON-type Li-ion conducting glass ceramics, Li1+x+yAlxTi2−xSiyP3−yO12 (LATSP), by radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering below 130°C. The amorphous films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The Li/PEO18–Li(CF3SO2)2N/LATSP/LiCo1/3Mn1/3Ni1/3O2/Au all-solid-state cells were fabricated to investigate the electrochemical performance of the amorphous films. It was found that the low-temperature deposited amorphous cathode film shows a high discharge voltage and a high discharge capacity of around 130mAhg−1.

Abstract:"Medium-entropy" amorphous Li garnets, with ≥4 local bonding units (LBUs), exhibit potential as solid-state electrolytes in hybrid or all-solid-state batteries owing to their grain-boundary-free nature and low-temperature synthesis requirement. Investigation of the local structure reveals edge- and face-sharing LBUs, deviating from the classic Zachariasen rules. In these structures, Li and Zr act as the network formers and La as network modifier, with enhanced Li dynamics observed for smaller Li–O and Zr–O coordination.

Abstract:Amorphous B(2)O(3) thin films fabricated by pulsed laser deposition were investigated as lithium storage electrode materials for the first time. A high reversible capacity of 1100 mAh g(-1) could be obtained. By using ex-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy, a new mechanism of lithium insertion/extraction into/from an amorphous structure was revealed. Large reversible capacity and good rate performance of B(2)O(3) electrode made it potential application as lithium storage material for rechargeable ion batteries. Abstract:The electrolyte has been considered as a key factor toward higher energy density for Li-ion and Li-metal batteries. However, conventional electrolytes suffer from uncontrolled interfacial reactions and irreversible decomposition causing performance deterioration and potential safety hazard. Organosilicon compounds have attracted great interest as promising electrolyte components due to facile chemical modifications, low glass transition temperatures (Tg), superior chemical, and thermal stabilities. Considerable investigation efforts have been devoted to developing better overall performance of organosilicon-based electrolytes in the past few years. Herein, the recent research progress of organosilicon-based functional electrolytes for the development of liquid, gel, and solid state electrolytes in Li-ion and Li-metal batteries is summarized. Attention is devoted to various types of organosilicon such as silane, siloxane, polysiloxane, and polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes in terms of molecular design, ionic conductivity, functions shown in batteries, thermal, chemical, electrochemical stability, safety, etc. The feasible strategies are also discussed that may promote the comprehensive electrochemical performances of organosilicon-based electrolytes in different types of electrolytes and batteries. Finally, the challenges facing organosilicon-based electrolytes and proposed their possible solutions are presented alongside promising development directions.

Abstract:Lithium metal battery has been regarded as promising next-generation battery system aiming for higher energy density. However, the lithium metal anode suffers severe side-reaction and dendrite issues. Its electrochemical performance is significantly depended on the electrolyte components and solvation structure. Herein, a series of fluorinated ethers are synthesized with weak-solvation ability owing to the duple steric effect derived from the designed longer carbon chain and methine group. The electrolyte solvation structure rich in AGGs (97.76%) enables remarkable CE of 99.71% (25 °C) as well as high CE of 98.56% even at -20 °C. Moreover, the lithium-sulfur battery exhibits excellent performance in a wide temperature range (-20 to 50 °C) ascribed to the modified interphase rich in LiF/LiO2. Furthermore, the pouch cell delivers superior energy density of 344.4 Wh kg-1 and maintains 80% capacity retention after 50 cycles. The novel solvent design via molecule chemistry provides alternative strategy to adjust solvation structure and thus favors high-energy density lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:We prepared a series of lithium lanthanum titanate (LLTO) thin film electrolytes by radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering using LLTO targets in a N2 atmosphere. We also deposited the LLTO thin films in an Ar atmosphere under a same condition as references for comparison. The microstructure morphology and the composition of the thin films were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), respectively. Results show that the thin film has an amorphous structure with a uniform surface and it is free of pinholes and cracks. Impedance measurements reveal that the ionic conductivity of the electrolytes is beneficial for all solid lithium batteries dependent on the lithium content at room temperature. We found that the amorphous LLTO thin film performs well and it has potential application in microbatteries for use in microelectronic devices.

Abstract:All solid-state lithium metal batteries are viewed as a potential next-generation energy storage technology due to their high energy density and better safety performance. The study on solid-state electrolytes (SSE) is of crucial importance for the development of technology in this field. Here, we develop a solvent-free preparation and matrix modification process for all-solid-state composite electrolytes (CSEs) based on the blended PVDF-HFP/PEO polymer matrix, and systematically study the effects of the solvent-free process on their properties. The results show that the solvent-free PVDF-HFP/PEO/10 wt % LLZTO solid-state electrolytes (1:1 mass ratio blended polymer matrix) combine the electrochemical and mechanical advantages of both polymers, thus-prepared electrolytes perform excellent tensile strength and ductility (over 500% strain for polymer matrix as well as 170% strain and 4.78 MPa strength for CSEs), and the ionic conductivity can reach ∼6.2 × 10–4 S·cm–1 at 80 °C. At the same time, the electrochemical stability and cycle stability of the electrolytes are enhanced due to the optimized process. The discoloration reaction of PVDF-HFP in composite electrolytes is further studied in this work as well.
