Abstract:Control over porous electrode microstructure is critical for the continued improvement of electrochemical performance of lithium ion batteries. This paper describes a convenient and economical method for controlling electrode porosity, thereby enhancing material loading and stabilizing the cycling performance. Sacrificial NaCl is added to a Si-based electrode, which demonstrates an areal capacity of ∼4 mAh/cm(2) at a C/10 rate (0.51 mA/cm(2)) and an areal capacity of 3 mAh/cm(2) at a C/3 rate (1.7 mA/cm(2)), one of the highest material loadings reported for a Si-based anode at such a high cycling rate. X-ray microtomography confirmed the improved porous architecture of the SiO electrode with NaCl. The method developed here is expected to be compatible with the state-of-the-art lithium ion battery industrial fabrication processes and therefore holds great promise as a practical technique for boosting the electrochemical performance of lithium ion batteries without changing material systems.

Abstract:In lithium-ion batteries, the electrochemical reaction between the electrodes and lithium is a critical process that controls the capacity, cyclability and reliability of the battery. Despite intensive study, the atomistic mechanism of the electrochemical reactions occurring in these solid-state electrodes remains unclear. Here, we show that in situ transmission electron microscopy can be used to study the dynamic lithiation process of single-crystal silicon with atomic resolution. We observe a sharp interface (∼1 nm thick) between the crystalline silicon and an amorphous Li x Si alloy. The lithiation kinetics are controlled by the migration of the interface, which occurs through a ledge mechanism involving the lateral movement of ledges on the close-packed {111} atomic planes. Such ledge flow processes produce the amorphous Li x Si alloy through layer-by-layer peeling of the {111} atomic facets, resulting in the orientation-dependent mobility of the interfaces.
Anion‐modulated Ion Conductor with Chain Conformational Transformation for Enhanced Interfacial Phase Stabilization of High‐Voltage Lithium Metal Batteries

Abstract:In solid-state lithium metal batteries (SSLMBs), the inhomogeneous electrolyte-electrode interphase layer aggravates the interfacial stability, leading to discontinuous interfacial ion/charge transport and continuous degradation of the electrolyte. Herein, we constructed an anion-modulated ionic conductor (AMIC) that enables in-situ construction of electrolyte/electrode interphases for high-voltage SSLMBs by exploiting conformational transitions under multiple interactions between polymer and lithium salt anions. Anions modulate the decomposition behavior of supramolecular poly(vinylidene chloride) (PVC) at the electrode interface by changing the spatial conformation of the polymer chains, which further enhances ion transport and stabilizes the interfacial morphology. In addition, the AMIC weakens the "Li+-solvation" and increases Li+ vehicle sites, thereby enhancing the lithium-ion transport number (tLi+ = ~0.67). Consequently, Li||LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cell maintains about 85% capacity retention and Coulombic efficiency > 99.8% in 200 cycles at a charge cut-off voltage of 4.5V. This study provides a new understanding of lithium salt anions regulating polymer chain segment behavior in the SPE and highlights the importance of the ion environment in participating in the construction of interfacial phases and ionic conduction.

Abstract:No design rules have yet been established for producing solid electrolytes with a lithium-ion conductivity high enough to replace liquid electrolytes and expand the performance and battery configuration limits of current lithium ion batteries. Taking advantage of the properties of high-entropy materials, we have designed a highly ion-conductive solid electrolyte by increasing the compositional complexity of a known lithium superionic conductor to eliminate ion migration barriers while maintaining the structural framework for superionic conduction. The synthesized phase with a compositional complexity showed an improved ion conductivity. We showed that the highly conductive solid electrolyte enables charge and discharge of a thick lithium-ion battery cathode at room temperature and thus has potential to change conventional battery configurations.

Abstract:The lithiation reaction holds immense significance across various branches of chemistry, particularly in the realm of electrochemical energy storage. Here, we report a new method that enables a solvent-free process at room temperature, exhibiting remarkably swift reaction kinetics. Through this process, the chemical integration of Li + into charged materials based on transition metals is achieved using lithium iodide, LiI. An evident application of this method lies in advancing the direct recycling of cathode materials reclaimed from spent batteries. Notably, the process facilitates the efficient and direct recycling of spent Li (1-x) FePO 4 cathode material, sourced from a commercial LIB, without the need for any solvents or heat treatments. The regenerated material exhibits a fully reversible capacity of approximately 168 mAh/g against Li metal, even under high current density conditions, with a consistently stable coulombic efficiency surpassing 99% over 45 cycles. This regenerative approach holds the potential for seamless extension to other LIB cathode materials, including but not limited to LMFP, LMO, LCO and NMC.

Abstract:Chemical solution deposition (CSD)-based thin-film fabrication techniques for solid electrolytes are important for accelerating the commercialization of all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries. Post-treatments, typically heat treatments at high temperatures, are applied to obtain a pure crystal structure with a dense morphology for high electrochemical performance. However, lithium evaporates at high temperatures, leading to changes in the material composition and decrease in performance. In this study, a novel rapid sintering method, namely flash-light sintering (FLS), was applied as a post-treatment for spin-coated lithium lanthanum titanate (LLTO) thin films to prevent lithium evaporation and obtain fully dense thin films with perovskite structures. The flash-light-sintered LLTO thin film exhibited negligible lithium loss with pore-free morphologies and a pure cubic perovskite structure, whereas the thermally sintered LLTO thin film exhibited significant lithium evaporation. The lithium-preserved cubic LLTO dense thin films prepared by FLS showed an outstanding total ionic conductivity of ∼6 × 10 −5 S cm −1 , the highest recorded for CSD-based LLTO thin films. We demonstrated that the FLS method could be successfully applied for LLTO thin-film fabrication while maintaining the lithium stoichiometry and ensuring a highly densified film and cubic structure, which has a higher ionic conductivity than those of structures such as tetragonal or orthorhombic unit cells. The rapid FLS method not only simplifies the fabrication of LLTO thin films but also provides opportunities for its wide application to materials containing lithium or other elements with low melting points.

Abstract:Recently, solid-state lithium batteries (SSLBs) have been considered an ideal solution for the practical application of lithium (Li) metal batteries owing to the excellent safety features of solid-state electrolytes (SSEs). Among various SSEs, Na superionic conductor (NASICON)-type Li1+xAlxTi2-x(PO4)(3) (LATP) holds great potential for its high ionic conductivity, low costs, and high stability. However, LATP tends to be reduced by metallic Li upon contact, posing a major challenge. Herein, a novel coating strategy is proposed to form a nanocomposite protecting layer on Li metal within 30 s. Such a protecting layer not only acts as an artificial solid-electrolyte interface to conduct Li ion transportation that remains stable after repeated cycling but also effectively precludes the interfacial reaction between Li and LATP by inhibiting the interfacial electron transfer. As a result, the Li/LATP/Li symmetric cells exhibit excellent cycling stability for over 300 h of continuous Li plating/stripping. The assembled full-cell using coated Li also shows high capacity retention after 500 cycles. Overall, this study demonstrates a facile and transferable method to reduce the reactivity of Li metal anode toward solid electrolytes with relatively high reduction potentials.

Abstract:Solid electrolytes are highly important materials for improving safety, energy density, and reversibility of electrochemical energy storage batteries. However, it is a challenge to modulate the coordination structure of conducting ions, which limits the improvement of ionic conductivity and hampers further development of practical solid electrolytes. Here, we present a skeleton-retained cationic exchange approach to produce a high-performance solid electrolyte of Li 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 stemming from the NASICON-type superionic conductor of Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 . The introduced lithium ions stabilized in under-coordination structures are facilitated to pass through relatively large conduction bottlenecks inherited from the Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 precursor. The synthesized Li 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 achieves a low activation energy of 0.21 eV and a high ionic conductivity of 3.59 mS cm −1 at room temperature. Li 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 not only inherits the satisfactory air survivability from Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 but also exhibits excellent cyclic stability and rate capability when applied to solid-state batteries. The present study opens an innovative avenue to regulate cationic occupancy and make new materials.

Wet Chemistry Route to Li3InCl6: Microstructural Control Render High Ionic Conductivity and Enhanced All-Solid-State Battery Performance

Abstract:Thanks to superionic conductivity and compatibility with >4 V cathodes, halide solid electrolytes (SEs) have elicited tremendous interest for application in all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs). Many compositions based on groups 3, 13, and divalent metals, and substituted stoichiometries have been explored, some displaying requisite properties, but the Li+ conductivity still falls short of theoretical predictions and appealing sulfide-type SEs. While controlling microstructural characteristics, namely grain boundary effects and microstrain, can boost ionic conductivity, they have rarely been considered. Moving away from the standard solid-state route, here a scalable and facile wet chemical approach for obtaining highly conductive (>2 mS cm-1) Li3InCl6 is presented, and it is shown that aprotic solvents can reduce grain boundaries and microstrain, leading to very high ionic conductivity of over 4 mS cm-1 (at 22 °C). Minimized grain boundary area renders improved moisture stability and enhances solid-solid interfacial contact, leading to excellent LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2-based full-cell performance, exemplified by stable room temperature (22 °C) cycling at a 0.2 C rate with 155 mAh g-1 capacity and 85% retention after 1000 cycles at 60 °C with a high 99.75% Coulombic efficiency. The findings showcase the viability of the aprotic solvent-mediated route for producing high-quality Li3InCl6 for all-solid-state batteries.

Abstract:All solid state batteries are widely investigated as next generation batteries because they do not suffer from leakage, volatilization, and flammability of liquid electrolyte. Both bulk type and thin film solid batteries have attract great attention. LiCoO2 thin film has been commonly used as the cathode material for solid state batteries due to its high capacity, operating voltage and long cycle life. Because of the importance of the solid-solid interface for the performance of the battery and stability during cycling, i.e. its life time, the interface of substrate/LiCoO2 and LiCoO2/solid electrolyte during the preparation of the solid battery and possible intermediate products in the interlayer attract great attention recently. [1] The deposition parameters has a big influence on the film quality in terms of structure, morphology and electrochemical properties. In the case of layered LiCoO2, lithium-ion diffusion rely on vacancy hopping mechanism within the lithium plane, showing a predominant two dimensional path. Therefore, different orientation of lattice could influence the intercalation properties of LiCoO2 thin film deposited. [2] A primary challenge in all solid state battery is the difficulty of rapidly moving charge across solid/solid interface within the electrodes and across the electrode/electrolyte interface. The consecutive study on electrode and/or electrolyte has achieved great progress for the last decades. However, interfaces still dominate the interfacial impedance during electrochemical reaction. The optimization of interface of substrate/LiCoO2 and LiCoO2 /solid electrolyte could direct the further improvement of current all solid state batteries. Both lithium ion mobility and electrochemical reaction of LiCoO2 thin film with the solid electrolyte and the substrate are related to the interfacial resistance, which could be minimized through controlling growth orientation of LiCoO2during deposition.[3] Therefore, the ionic transportation across solid/solid interface and electrode/electrolyte interface are increased, leading to improved electrochemical performance. In this work, we optimize the deposition parameter to get high crystalline HT-LiCoO2 with hexagonal structure and good electrochemical performance firstly. Next, we study on sputtering deposition of LiCoO2 with different orientation in order to study the LiCoO2/substrate and LiCoO2/solid state electrolyte interface. The compositional (XPS), microstructural (XRD, Raman, SEM) and electrochemical properties of the sputtering LiCoO2thin films with different orientation are investigated. Realizing High‐Flux Lithium‐Ion Conduction by LaF3 Doping in Quasi‐Solid‐State Electrolytes

Abstract:In response to the low ionic conductivity of polymer electrolytes at room temperature, a LaF3‐doped PVDF solid‐state electrolyte is developed and the lithium environment is optimized to create a high throughput lithium‐ion channel; the stability of the electrode/electrolyte interface is effectively improved to ensure efficient and stable interfacial lithium conduction. The inherent low ionic conductivity of PVDF‐based electrolytes at room temperature and lithium dendrite penetration hinder its further application. Herein, a LaF3 doped Poly(vinylidene fluoride‐chlorotrifluoroethylene) (P(VDF‐ctfe)) quasi‐solid electrolyte is developed. High‐flux channels are created due to the optimization of the lithium environment that lanthanum preferentially competes coordination with anionic species for relaxing lithium hopping. Lithium carriers are therefore highly free and unbound at the molecular level, resulting in a high ionic conductivity (σ) of 0.7 mS cm−1 and a transfer number (tLi+) of 0.79 at 25 °C. Moreover, the in situ organic–inorganic LiF‐rich dielectric layer effectively improves the stability and compatibility of the electrode/electrolyte interface, ensuring interfacial lithium conduction while facilitating stable Li+ plating/stripping. As a result, the optimized Li/ATCSE‐3%/Li can deliver favorable compatibility at 0.1 and 0.3 mA cm−2 for stable Li+ plating/stripping for 2000 and 1200 h, respectively. The high‐mass loading (6.4 mg cm−2) pouch cell delivers a stable cycling performance over 100 cycles with a capacity retention of 85.8% at 0.3 °C. This work is anticipated to provide considerable insight into the creative design of lithium transport of polymer‐based for practical quasi‐solid‐state lithium metal batteries.

Enhanced Interphase Ion Transport via Charge‐Rich Space Charge Layers for Ultra‐Stable Solid‐State Lithium Metal Batteries

Abstract:This study introduces a simple and scalable method for designing high‐conductive composite polymer electrolytes by forming charge‐rich space charge layers. The conjugated structure polymer (P‐DOL) coated LLZTO (Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12) compositing with PVDF‐HFP modulate Li+ transport pathways and strengthen the electrode/electrolyte interfacial compatibility. With these advantages, the composite electrolyte leads to a superior interfacial stability and lithium stripping/plating kinetics. The significant interfacial resistance between solid electrolyte‐electrode interfaces is a major bottleneck for the practical application of solid‐state lithium batteries. This resistance is primarily caused by the formation of space charge layers (SCLs), resulting from the redistribution of ionic carriers at the interface between dissimilar materials with varying chemical potentials, which lead to insufficient carriers and sluggish lithium‐ion transport. In this study, a conjugated structure polymer is constructed through in situ polymerization onto the oxide electrolyte, forming charge‐rich SCLs on the organic/inorganic interface, and enabling the interfacial layer to maintain superior ion transfer and contact. The Li solid NMR spectra and computational study suggest that optimized SCLs offer effective pathways for Li+ conduction in the electrolyte, thereby enhancing the interfacial conduction. Furthermore, the designed electrolyte induces the formation of an inorganic‐rich interphase layer on the lithium anode, enabling rapid lithium‐ion transport and uniform Li deposition. Consequently, the lithium symmetric cell with this electrolyte operates for more than 5100 h, while LiFePO4/Li solid‐state batteries can stably cycle up to 800 times at 5 C. This interfacial modification strategy provides a new perspective for the rational design of the charge‐rich SCLs and advances the understanding of the SCLs inside the electrolyte.

Abstract:Tuning the solvation structure of lithium ions via electrolyte engineering has proven effective for lithium metal (Li) anode. Further advancement that bypasses the trial-and-error practice relies on the establishment of molecular design principles. Expanding the scope of our previous work on solvent fluorination, we report here an alternative design principle for non-fluorinated solvents, which potentially have reduced cost, environmental impact, and toxicity. By studying non-fluorinated ethers systematically, we found that the short-chain acetals favor the [gauche, gauche] molecular conformation due to hyperconjugation, which leads to weakened monodentate coordination with Li+. The dimethoxymethane electrolyte showed fast activation to >99% Coulombic efficiency (CE) and high ionic conductivity of 8.03 mS cm-1. The electrolyte performance was demonstrated in anode-free Cu||LFP pouch cells at current densities up to 4 mA cm-2 (70 to 100 cycles) and thin-Li||high-loading-LFP coin cells (200-300 cycles). Overall, we demonstrated and rationalized the improvement in Li metal cyclability by the acetal structure compared to ethylene glycol ethers. We expect further improvement in performance by tuning the acetal structure.

In-situ interfacial passivation and self-adaptability synergistically stabilizing all-solid-state lithium metal batteries

Abstract:The function of solid electrolytes and the composition of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) are highly significant for inhibiting the growth of Li dendrites. Herein, we report an in-situ interfacial passivation combined with self-adaptability strategy to reinforce Li 0.33 La 0.557 TiO 3 (LLTO)-based solid-state batteries. Specifically, a functional SEI enriched with LiF/Li 3 PO 4 is formed by in-situ electrochemical conversion, which is greatly beneficial to improving interface compatibility and enhancing ion transport. While the polarized dielectric BaTiO 3 -polyamic acid (BTO-PAA, BP) film greatly improves the Li-ion transport kinetics and homogenizes the Li deposition. As expected, the resulting electrolyte offers considerable ionic conductivity at room temperature (4.3×10 −4 S cm −1 ) and appreciable electrochemical decomposition voltage (5.23 V) after electrochemical passivation. For Li-LiFePO 4 batteries, it shows a high specific capacity of 153 mA h g −1 at 0.2 C after 100 cycles and a long-term durability of 115 mA h g −1 at 1.0 C after 800 cycles. Additionally, a stable Li plating/stripping can be achieved for more than 900 h at 0.5 mA cm −2 . The stabilization mechanisms are elucidated by ex-situ XRD, ex-situ XPS, and ex-situ FTIR techniques, and the corresponding results reveal that the interfacial passivation combined with polarization effect is an effective strategy for improving the electrochemical performance. The present study provides a deeper insight into the dynamic adjustment of electrode-electrolyte interfacial for solid-state lithium batteries.

Abstract:Lithium metal is regarded as one of the most promising anode materials due to its intrinsic superiority including the lowest electrode potential (−3.04 V vs. SHE) and impressive theoretical specific capacity (3860 mAh/g). Even though the study of lithium metal batteries (LMBs) can be traced back to the 1970s, the practical promotion has been hindered by some substantial obstacles, such as the growth of dendrite and the low Coulombic efficiency (CE). During the past decade, extensive investigative approaches have been devoted to stabilizing the deposition of lithium metal as well as inhibiting the undesirable parasitic reactions. Electrolytes play a crucial role in the deposition of lithium, and that explains the reason why a great deal of progress has been attained in this field. This review summarizes the representative work in recent years, including the optimization of conventional electrolyte components, as well as the novel materials in a solvent, Li salt, and additives. Moreover, high-concentration electrolytes and localized high-concentration electrolytes are summarized representing two fruitful fields, based on the emerging theories of lithium-ion coordination and solvation sheath layer. Finally, some prospects are proposed to lead us closer to the large-scale application of LMBs.

Abstract:Solid-state lithium (Li) metal batteries (LMBs) are promising owing to enhanced safety and high energy density. However, the issues of Li dendrite growth and large electrolyte-electrode interfacial resistance still hinder their practical applications in LMBs. Here, a Li anode-electrolyte structure integration has been developed using in-situ chemical reactions between the polyvinylidene fluoride/Li 3x La 2/3−x TiO 3 /N-methyl pyrrolidone (PVDF/LLTO/NMP) solution and the Li metal interphase. After gradually coating the PVDF/LLTO/NMP solution onto Li metal, NMP as catalyst, inducing PVDF reacted with Li spontaneously to form lithium fluorine (LiF), and the accompanying Ti 4+ ions (in LLTO) are reduced to Ti 3+ ions to form a LLTO ionic/electronic conductor (Li x LLTO). After NMP evaporation, an ionic/electronic conductor protective layer of LiF/Li x LLTO is created between the PVDF/LLTO electrolytes and Li metal. When applying the integrated solid-state Li batteries (ISSLBs), the protective layer can reduce interfacial resistance and the formation of Li dendrites by regulating the even Li deposition redistributing the Li-ion transport. As a result, the as-assembled LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 /ISSLBs achieves an initial capacity of 181 mA h g −1 and retains 83% capacity after 200 cycles at 0.5 C. This design can be an effective strategy to tailor the properties of Li-metal anodes for achieving dendrite-free LMBs with high performance and high safety.

Abstract:Enhancing the interphase stability of polymer electrolytes with high-voltage cathodes is crucial for the development of high-energy-density lithium metal batteries (LMBs), especially in wearable devices area. Herein, lithium difluorophosphate (LiDFP) is incorporated into the solid polymer electrolyte of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) to enhance the formation of a robust cathode-electrolyte interphase (CEI) in high-voltage LiCoO2 LMBs. Through combining electrochemical measurements, spectroscopic techniques and theoretical calculations, the underlying modification mechanism is revealed. Due to its stronger anionic coordination with both polymer electrolyte chain and proton, and more oxidation-active resultant anion-coordinated polymer compared with lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI), LiDFP suppresses the formation of the strong acid HTFSI deriving from the deprotonated process of the terminal O-H group thus avoiding the further oxidative attack to the polymeric framework. Furthermore, under the synergetic decomposition of HDFP intermediate, the polymer-derived radical helps to reconstruct a chemo-mechanically stable and Li-conductive CEI layer, which consists of abundant LiF/Li3PO4/LixPOyFz inorganic species distributed in lithiated organic macromolecules. The in-situ constructed CEI effectively passivates catalytic sites on LiCoO2 directly against PEO, resulting in well-maintained layered structure during high-voltage cycling. The proposed interphasial chemistry that regulates CEI formation provides directive knowledge of electrolyte optimization for high-voltage solid-state batteries.
