Abstract:Fe2O3 is a candidate material for anodes in Li-ion batteries due to its high theoretical capacity. However, the practical application of Fe2O3 is still limited by its sluggish conversion reactions. In this work, porous Fe2O3 films with homogeneously dispersed Ag nanoparticles are fabricated using a facile one- step electrostatic spray deposition technique. Both the unique, highly porous structure and the conducting Ag metal contribute to the outstanding electrochemical performance of the anode. The Fe2O3-Ag composite anode retains stable capacities of 1042 (0.1 C), 961 (1 C) and 857 mAhg(-1) (5 C) over 100 cycles. When cycled at even higher rates, competitive capacities of 555 (15 C) and 509 mAhg(-1) (20 C) are still acquired. This work might present opportunities to develop an oxide-metal anode with high capacity, long cycling life and good rate capability for Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:This work introduces an effective, inexpensive, and large-scale production approach to the synthesis of Fe2O3 nanoparticles with a favorable configuration that 5nm iron oxide domains in diameter assembled into a mesoporous network. The phase structure, morphology, and pore nature were characterized systematically. When used as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, the mesoporous Fe2O3 nanoparticles exhibit excellent cycling performance (1009mAhg−1 at 100mAg−1 up to 230cycles) and rate capability (reversible charging capacity of 420mAhg−1 at 1000mAg−1 during 230cycles). This research suggests that the mesoporous Fe2O3 nanoparticles could be suitable as a high rate performance anode material for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:In this study, Fe3O4/carbon nanocomposites as anode materials of Li-ion batteries were synthesized through heating hierarchically porous Fe-based xerogels under N2 atmosphere. The pyrolysis of amorphous Fe-xerogel base materials resulted in the simultaneous formation of Fe3O4/C composites, in which Fe3O4 particles of less than 50nm were uniformly dispersed and embedded in a porous carbon matrix. Due to the favorable nanostructure, the synthesized Fe3O4/C composites with a proper carbon content of 18.8wt.% exhibited good electrochemical performance including high capacity and rate capability as well as much enhanced cyclic stability.

Abstract:In this work, single-crystalline α-FeOOH nanorods with a length of 400–700 nm and a diameter of 20–80 nm were successfully synthesized via a facile template-free hydrothermal method. Single-crystalline mesoporous α-Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 nanorods could be obtained from these α-FeOOH precursors after calcining at 350 °C in air and 500 °C in nitrogen, respectively. The as-prepared single-crystalline mesoporous α-Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 nanorods exhibited a large specific surface area and porosity, effectively enhancing the electrochemical reaction area and accommodate the strain during the charge–discharge cycling process.

Abstract:A facile and scalable strategy for the synthesis of discrete, homogeneous and small (mostly 5–15 nm) Fe3O4 nanocrystals embedded in a partially graphitized porous carbon matrix was developed, which involved the simple mixing of a metal precursor (Fe(NO3)3·9H2O), a carbon precursor (C6H8O7), and a dispersant (NaCl) in an aqueous solution followed by calcination at 600 °C for 2 h under Ar. As the anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, the Fe3O4/carbon composite with 55.24 wt% Fe3O4 exhibited superior electrochemical performances, such as high reversible lithium storage capacity (834 mA h g−1 at 1 C after 60 cycles, 1 C = 924 mA g−1), high Coulombic efficiency (100%), excellent cycling stability, and superior rate capability (588 mA h g−1 at 5 C and 382 mA h g−1 at 10 C). These excellent electrochemical performances could be attributed to the robust porous carbon matrix with a partially graphitized structure for embedding a mass of small Fe3O4 nanocrystals, which not only provided excellent electronic conductivity, short transportation length for both lithium ions and electrons, and enough elastic buffer space to accommodate volume changes upon lithium insertion/extraction, but also could effectively avoid agglomeration of the Fe3O4 nanocrystals and maintain the structural integrity of the electrode during the charge–discharge process. It is believed that the Fe3O4/carbon composite synthesized by the current method is a promising anode material for high energy and power density lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:One-dimensional (1D) transition metal oxides materials with unique mesoporous structure have potential applications in the energy conversion and storage field. In this work, 1D mesoporous Fe2O3 nanowires growth on strain steel substrate were prepared through a two-step solution method and used as anode materials for lithium batteries. The electrode delivers discharge capacity of 1460 mAh·g−1 at 100 mA g−1 density after 200 cycles. Furthermore, the electrode exhibited outstanding rate capability and its reversible capacity reaches to 700 mAh·g−1 at 800 mA g−1 density. Such excellent cycle performance may ascribe to the capacitive effect caused by the unique mesoporous nanowire structure. Abstract:Reticulated mesoporous Fe2O3@C flakes, consisting of nanocrystalline alpha-Fe2O3 encased within a thin carbon skeleton, were synthesized using ferrocene as iron and carbon sources and a novel reaction agent of ammonium sulphate via a facile two-step heating route. Those flakes, which were several nanometers thick and 1-2 mm in diameter, showed high capacity, excellent cyclic stability and rate capability as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). An initial reversible capacity of 910 mA h g(-1) at a discharge/charge current of 0.1 A g(-1) was obtained, and the capacity showed a gradual increase during cycling, reaching a high capacity of 1080 mA h g(-1) after 120 cycles. An in situ lithiation study by transmission electron microscopy showed that the reticulated mesopores and the ultrathin feature of the Fe2O3@C flakes can largely accommodate the mechanical stresses and volume expansion of Fe2O3 during lithiation and hence maintain their integrity and provide excellent properties. The thin carbon skeleton not only facilitates the electronic conduction, but also inhibits the aggregation of nanocrystalline Fe2O3 flakes. The facile fabrication method and the unique structure of the mesoporous Fe2O3@C flakes offer high performance for LIB anodes and great potential for other applications of Fe2O3.

Abstract:To solve the common problems of intrinsically poor electrical conductivity and drastic volume expansion of the Fe2O3 anode in lithium-ion batteries, we synthesized porous Fe2O3 heterostructural nanosheets with β-Fe2O3/α-Fe2O3 by simple pyrolyzing of iron(III) ethylene diamine tetra acetate (Fe-EDTA) precursor and subsequently washing to remove NaCl particles formed in situ. Porous Fe2O3 nanosheets combining the advantages of large-area porous structure and β-Fe2O3/α-Fe2O3 heterostructure as an anode showed improved lithium ion storage performance. The porous nanosheets exhibited a high reversible capacity (1131.1 mA h g−1 at a current density of 1.0 A g−1 after 300 cycles), and a remarkable rate capability of 505 mA h g−1 at 10 A g−1.

Abstract:Iron oxide materials are attractive anode materials for lithium–ion batteries for their high capacity and low cost compared with graphite and most of other transition metal oxides. Porous carbon-free α-Fe2O3 films with two types of pore size distribution were prepared by electrostatic spray deposition, and they were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy. The 200°C-deposited thin film exhibits a high reversible capacity of up to 1080mAhg−1, while the initial capacity loss is at a remarkable low level (19.8%). Besides, the energy efficiency and energy specific average potential (Eav) of the Fe2O3 films during charge/discharge process were also investigated. The results indicate that the porous α-Fe2O3 films have significantly higher energy density than Li4Ti5O12 while it has a similar Eav of about 1.5V. Due to the porous structure that can buffer the volume changes during lithium intercalation/de-intercalation, the films exhibit stable cycling performance. As a potential anode material for high performance lithium–ion batteries that can be applied on electric vehicle and energy storage, rate capability and electrochemical performance under high-low temperatures were also investigated.

Abstract:Mesoporous Li2FeSiO4/C nanocomposite cathode material has been prepared by a sol-gel method based on P123. Effect of calcinations temperature and carbon content on the electrochemical performance was investigated. The structure and morphology of the mesoporous materials were examined by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and N2 adsorption/desorption techniques. The results indicate that the uniform nanometer-sized Li2FeSiO4 particles are embedded in irregular mesoporous amorphous carbon. The mesoporous Li2FeSiO4 with 9.22% carbon coating exhibits the best electrochemical performance especial rate performance. It has a high initial discharge capacity of 178.4 mAh g-1 at 1/16 C and reversible discharge capacity of 100.8 mAh g-1 at 5 C after 100 cycles. The enhanced electrochemical performance can be ascribed to its small size, large specific surface area, uniform carbon-decoration and mesoporous structure. © 2013 by ESG.

Abstract:A magnetite (Fe3O4) powder composed of uniform sub-micrometer spherical particles has been successfully synthesized by a hydrothermal method at low temperature. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and galvanostatic cell cycling are employed to characterize the structure and electrochemical performance of the as-prepared Fe3O4 spheroids. The magnetite shows a stable and reversible capacity of over 900mAhg−1 during up to 60 cycles and good rate capability. The experimental results suggest that the Fe3O4 synthesized by this method is a promising anode material for high energy-density lithium-ion batteries.
Rapid, tunable synthesis of porous carbon xerogels with expanded graphite and their application as anodes for Li-ion batteries

Abstract:The present work reports a rapid, tunable synthesis of resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) carbon xerogels and their potential application as anode materials for lithium-ion battery. An iron-containing deep eutectic solvent (DES) is applied as both reaction medium and catalyst for the polymerization and graphitization. Water at different levels is employed as a co-solvent to mediate the polymerization and phase separation processes to produce a more-developed porous structure. The established binary-solvent synthesis strategy greatly simplifies the RF carbon xerogel preparation processes with a very short sol-gel time and a more acceptable ambient pressure drying. A duplex carbon configuration of rich microporosity (SBET = 566 m2 g-1) and expanded nanographite is achieved in the binary-solvent system with a DES mass fraction of 70%. The integrated structural merit is highly favorable for lithium storage, showing a reversible capacity of 633 mA h g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 and an excellent rate performance (205 mA h g-1 at 5 A g-1) as well as superior cycling stability.

Abstract:The performance of anode materials is critical in further development of Li-ion batteries. However, the reversible capacity and cycling stability of anode materials are still far from satisfying. In this study, a new hollow MnFe2O4-carbon nanospheres (H-MnFe2O4-C) synthesized via an in-situ self-etching method was proposed. The MnFe2O4 served as the structural platform to embed the D-galactose coating layer followed by the in situ carbonization, the composite was then etched to form functional mesoporous H-MnFe2O4-C. The possible formation mechanism were discussed in detail. Based on the advantages of the hollow superstructure, close-packed configuration and uniform carbon coatings, which facilitate lithium-ion and electron transport while simultaneously alleviating the drastic volumetric change during cycling, the H-MnFe2O4-C exhibit high reversible capacity and outstanding cycling stability (with 973 mAh.g(-1) after 500 cycles at the current density of 0.2 A.g(-1), and 603 mAh.g(-1) at a high current density of 1 A.g(-1)), as well as high coulombic efficiency (> 98%). The findings in this study are useful for the engineering design of porous carbon-coated composite, which can be used for Li-ion batteries applications and other fields.

Abstract:The BaFe12O19 nanocrystalline was prepared via a sol-gel process. The structure, morphology and electrochemical properties of the nanocrystallines were detected by means of XRD, TEM, TGA and electrochemical measurements. This BaFe12O19 is firstly used as anode electrode material for lithium-ion batteries. The mechanism of BaFe12O19 with Li will also be discussed. The reversible specific capacity of BaFe12O19 is 959.5 mAh/g. A capacity of 358.3 mAh/g can be retained after 50 cycles which will have a broad space for improvement with modifying.

Abstract:Transition metal oxide magnetite (Fe3O4) is recognized as a potential anode material for lithium-ion batteries owing to its high theoretical specific capacity, modest voltage output, and eco-friendly character. It is a challenging task to engineer high-performance composite materials by effectively dispersing Fe3O4 crystals with limited sizes in a well-designed supporting framework following sustainable approaches. In this work, the naturally abundant plant products sodium lignosulfonate (Lig) and sodium cellulose (CMC) were selected to coprecipitate with Fe3+ ions under mild hydrothermal conditions. The Fe-Lig/CMC intermediate sediment with an optimized microstructure can be directly converted to the Lig/CMC-derived carbon matrix-supported Fe3O4 nanocomposite sample (Fe3O4@LigC/CC). Compared with the controlled Fe3O4@LigC material, the Fe3O4@LigC/CC nanocomposite provides superior electrochemical performance in the anode, which has inspiring specific capacities of 820.6 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles under a current rate of 100 mA·g−1 and 750.5 mAh g−1 after 250 cycles, as well as more exciting rate capabilities. The biomimetic sample design and synthesis protocol closely follow the criteria of green chemistry and can be further developed in wider scenarios.

Abstract:This paper describes the synthesis of three-dimensionally porous Fe3O4 via template-assisted and subsequent electrochemical deposition methods. When used as anode materials of lithium–ion batteries, the porous Fe3O4 electrodes show better cyclability and enhanced rate capabilities compared to planar Fe3O4 electrodes. The superior performance can be attributed to improved electrical contact, fast electron transport and good strain accommodation of the porous electrodes. The effect of the thickness of the porous Fe3O4 electrodes on the lithium–ion battery performance has also been investigated.

Abstract:Fe2O3 has been widely investigated as an anode material for its high theoretical capacity and natural abundance, but the low conductivity, large volume variation, and slow kinetics seriously hinder its commercialization. Here, we propose the in situ growth of ultra-fine Maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) NPs on the 3D rGO aerogel with abundant pores by a facile freeze-drying process followed by thermal annealing, which is confirmed by X-ray diffraction and high-resolution-tunneling electron microscopy. This novel 3D porous structure ensures fast electron and ion diffusion within the electrode, which effectively mitigates the volume expansion of Fe2O3 during cycling. Benefiting from these advantages, an excellent cycling performance of 668 mAh g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 over 100 cycles as well as outstanding rate performance are achieved. These results provide a promising approach of advanced anode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:A facile strategy of electrospinning has been employed to fabricate freestanding anodes of gamma-Fe2O3/porous carbon fibers (gamma-Fe2O3/PCF) for both lithium and sodium ion batteries, in which gamma- Fe2O3 nanoparticles ranging from 50 to 150 nm were in-situ formed and embedded in the porous carbon fibers. The thus obtained composite delivers highly reversible discharge capacities of 980 mAh g(-1) in lithium ion batteries and 291 mAh g(-1) in sodium ion batteries, corresponding to high capacity retentions of 97 and 78%, respectively. The superior electrochemical performance of the binder-free anodes can be attributed to the unique composite structure with gamma-Fe2O3 nanoparticles homogenously dispersed in the porous carbon fibers, which should help alleviate the volumetric fluctuation, promote the wettability of electrolyte, and enhance the electronic conductivity, demonstrating a promising candidate as the flexible anode material for high-performance energy storage devices.
