Abstract:A facile and scalable process for synthesizing Fe3O4/C composites via a solution combustion technique followed by carbon-coating annealing treatment is developed. The as-prepared Fe3O4/C sample containing about 13.9 wt% carbon displays an attractive cycling performance up to 100 cycles (similar to 470 mA h g(-1) retained at 100 mA g(-1)). In addition, the Fe3O4/C electrode shows good rate capability, a capacity of 530 mA h g(-1) at 92.4 mA g(-1) is still recoverable and sustainable up to 60 cycles after charge/discharge process at high rates. The enhanced electrochemical performance can be attributed to the improved electron transport from the consecutive carbon layer and Li+ diffusion due to the nanoscale nature of the Fe3O4 active materials. The present work represents a successful example of solution combustion technique combined with carbon-coating annealing process for preparing iron oxide-based electrodes in large scale, which can also be extended to prepare other metal oxide/carbon composites. Fe2O3–Ag Porous Film Anodes for Ultrahigh‐Rate Lithium‐Ion Batteries

Abstract:Fe2O3 is a candidate material for anodes in Li-ion batteries due to its high theoretical capacity. However, the practical application of Fe2O3 is still limited by its sluggish conversion reactions. In this work, porous Fe2O3 films with homogeneously dispersed Ag nanoparticles are fabricated using a facile one- step electrostatic spray deposition technique. Both the unique, highly porous structure and the conducting Ag metal contribute to the outstanding electrochemical performance of the anode. The Fe2O3-Ag composite anode retains stable capacities of 1042 (0.1 C), 961 (1 C) and 857 mAhg(-1) (5 C) over 100 cycles. When cycled at even higher rates, competitive capacities of 555 (15 C) and 509 mAhg(-1) (20 C) are still acquired. This work might present opportunities to develop an oxide-metal anode with high capacity, long cycling life and good rate capability for Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:FePS3@C nanocomposites are successfully synthesized by a facile two-step route. The as-synthesized samples show excellent thermal and environmental stability. As a novel anode material for lithium batteries, the FePS3@C nanocomposites exhibit a high capacity of 1000 mA h g(-1) at a current density of 0.2 A g(-1) and excellent reversibility over 100 cycles, indicating their promising applications in lithium storage.

Abstract:In this study, Fe3O4/carbon nanocomposites as anode materials of Li-ion batteries were synthesized through heating hierarchically porous Fe-based xerogels under N2 atmosphere. The pyrolysis of amorphous Fe-xerogel base materials resulted in the simultaneous formation of Fe3O4/C composites, in which Fe3O4 particles of less than 50nm were uniformly dispersed and embedded in a porous carbon matrix. Due to the favorable nanostructure, the synthesized Fe3O4/C composites with a proper carbon content of 18.8wt.% exhibited good electrochemical performance including high capacity and rate capability as well as much enhanced cyclic stability.

Abstract:A plum pudding-like Fe(3)O(4)/Fe/carbon composite was synthesized by a sol-gel polymerization followed by a heat-treatment process and characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopic analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and electrochemical test. In this composite, uniform spherical Fe(3)O(4)/Fe nanoparticles of about 100 nm were embedded into carbon matrix with high monodispersion. As-prepared Fe(3)O(4)/Fe/carbon composite electrode exhibits a stable and reversible capacity of over 600 mA h g(-1) at a current of 50 mA g(-1) between 0.002 V and 3.0 V, as well as excellent rate capability. The plum pudding-like structure, in which trace Fe promotes conductivity and carbon matrix mediates the volume change, can enhance the cycling performance and rate capability of Fe(3)O(4) electrode. This unique structure is valuable for the preparation of other electrode materials.

Abstract:Fe3O4/graphene composites with a conductive, porous three-dimensional (3D) graphene network were synthesized through a facile method. In the preparation process, Fe(OH)3 colloid was formed in situ by adding FeCl3 solution to a boiling graphene oxide (GO) suspension, with Fe(OH)3/GO precipitated because of the electrostatic interaction between the two components. The precipitate was separated and added to a second GO suspension to achieve additional GO encapsulation. This self-assembled Fe(OH)3/GO precursor was then hydrothermally and heat treated, resulting in the formation of Fe3O4/graphene composites. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and Raman spectroscopy results revealed that the Fe3O4/graphene composites possess a favorable 3D porous graphene network embedding 50- to 100-nm-sized Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The Fe3O4/graphene composites exhibit good electrochemical performance as an anode material for Li-ion batteries. The electrode composed of the Fe3O4/graphene composite delivered a capacity of 1390 mAh∙g - 1 for the first lithiation and retained a capacity of 819 mAh∙g - 1 after 50 cycles. The electrodes also exhibited good rate capability. The present results demonstrate that the electrochemical performance of the Fe3O4/graphene composite is highly sensitive to its preparation procedure and to the resulting nanostructure. Each of the four preparation procedures was experimentally shown to be important for achieving the final nanostructure and good electrochemical performance. A formation mechanism for the Fe3O4/graphene composite is also proposed.

Abstract:Fe3O4/C composites are synthesized by ball milling nano-sized Fe2O3 powder with acetylene black (AB) in different ratios followed by a carbothermal reduction at 600 °C for 6 h. Structural evolution of the Fe2O3/AB mixtures during the carbothermal reduction and the electrochemical properties of the Fe3O4/C composites as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries are investigated. The results show that Fe2O3 has been fully reduced to Fe3O4 during the reduction. The Fe3O4 particles inherit the nano-size feature of Fe2O3 and are well dispersed in the composites. The composites with 60 and 70 wt.%AB additions possess a close capacity of ca. 430 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles, showing retentions of 85% and 95%, respectively. The Fe3O4/C composites converted from Fe2O3/AB mixtures show better electrochemical performance than the mixtures. The favorable electrochemical performance of the Fe3O4/C composites is mainly attributed to the homogeneous distribution of the Fe3O4 nanoparticles in the carbon matrix and the comparatively high electronic conductivity of Fe3O4. The synthesis method is suggested to be facile in large-scale production of superior anode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Fe3O4 is a kind of promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries, however, the poor electrical conductivity and serious volume expansion limit their practical application in practice. In this article, the Fe3O4@C composite is prepared by facilely decomposing of the cellulose/ferric tartrate complex system. A ferric tartrate complex aqueous solution has been explored to dissolve cellulose. After a freeze-drying and subsequently carbonization at high temperature, ferric tartrate complex is decomposed to Fe3O4 and deposited homogenously inside the porous carbon derived from cellulose, obtaining the in-situ porous Fe3O4@C composites. The porous carbon can provide good electrical conductivity and adapt to the volume change of the Fe3O4 nanoparticles in electrochemical research. As LIB anode material, The Fe3O4@C anode delivers high initial charging capacity of 864.9 mAh·g-1 at 100 mA·g-1 and excellent cycling stability of 86.4% capacity retention after 300 cycles at 1000 mA·g-1.

Abstract:Carbon coated Fe3O4 composite (Fe3O4@C) with bi-morphological architecture has been prepared via a chemical vapor deposition at 450 degrees C from Fe2O3 nanoparticles by using acetylene as the deposition vapor and carbon source. The Fe2O3 are fully reduced to Fe3O4 in a 10 min of deposition, showing submicronsized octahedral Fe3O4 particles coated partially with a thin carbon layer mainly, and a few nano-sized Fe3O4 particles coated with carbon also. The deposition period of 20 min results in a further growth of the octahedral Fe3O4 particles and a reduction of the number of the nano-sized ones, correlating to a thick and fully coated carbon layer. Impurities of iron carbides generate in the composite with further prolonging the deposition to 30 min. The Fe3O4@C composite from 20 min of deposition shows superior electrochemical property to others. An initial reversible capacity of 570 mAh g(-1) is obtained and the capacity fading is less than 5% after 60 cycles. The fabrication method is facile and time-saving. Such submicron size-predominated Fe3O4@C composite is hopefully not only favorable in alleviating the agglomeration of the iron oxide during cycling, but also helpful in getting high packing density of the anode material. Abstract:Carbon-based nanofibers can be used as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. Both pure carbon nanofiber and C/Fe3O4 composite nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning and subsequent carbonization processes. The composition and structures were characterized by Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The electrochemical properties were evaluated in coin-type cells versus metallic lithium. It is found that after an annealing temperature of 500–700°C, the carbon has disordered structure while Fe3O4 is nanocrystalline with a particle size from 8.5 to 52nm. Compared with the pure carbon nanofiber, the 600°C-carbonized C/Fe3O4 composite nanofiber exhibits much better electrochemical performance with a high reversible capacity of 1007mAhg−1 at the 80th cycle and excellent rate capability. A beneficial powderization phenomenon is discovered during the electrochemical cycling. This study suggests that the optimized C/Fe3O4 composite nanofiber is a promising anode material for high performance lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:A facile and scalable strategy for the synthesis of discrete, homogeneous and small (mostly 5–15 nm) Fe3O4 nanocrystals embedded in a partially graphitized porous carbon matrix was developed, which involved the simple mixing of a metal precursor (Fe(NO3)3·9H2O), a carbon precursor (C6H8O7), and a dispersant (NaCl) in an aqueous solution followed by calcination at 600 °C for 2 h under Ar. As the anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, the Fe3O4/carbon composite with 55.24 wt% Fe3O4 exhibited superior electrochemical performances, such as high reversible lithium storage capacity (834 mA h g−1 at 1 C after 60 cycles, 1 C = 924 mA g−1), high Coulombic efficiency (100%), excellent cycling stability, and superior rate capability (588 mA h g−1 at 5 C and 382 mA h g−1 at 10 C). These excellent electrochemical performances could be attributed to the robust porous carbon matrix with a partially graphitized structure for embedding a mass of small Fe3O4 nanocrystals, which not only provided excellent electronic conductivity, short transportation length for both lithium ions and electrons, and enough elastic buffer space to accommodate volume changes upon lithium insertion/extraction, but also could effectively avoid agglomeration of the Fe3O4 nanocrystals and maintain the structural integrity of the electrode during the charge–discharge process. It is believed that the Fe3O4/carbon composite synthesized by the current method is a promising anode material for high energy and power density lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Attributed to high theoretical capacity and abundant reserves, Si/C anodes have been commercialized in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the shortcomings of poor interfacial compatibility, low rate performance, and bad stability remain to be overcome. In this paper, a facile method for the synthesis of silicon/iron oxide/carbon (Si/Fe3O4/C) composites by ball-milling in a supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) fluid medium is proposed. This method utilizes the diffusion characteristics, extremely low viscosity, and excellent mass transfer properties of supercritical fluids. Under the infiltration of an scCO2 fluid, mesophase carbon microspheres (MCMB) are exfoliated into graphite flakes and achieve good interfacial fusion with silicon and Prussian blue during ball-milling. The Prussian blue is transformed into Fe3O4 by subsequent heat treatment under a nitrogen atmosphere, and Fe3O4 introduced in this way enhances the lithium-storage capacity, cycling stability, and rate performance significantly of Si/C anodes. As an anode for LIBs, the reversible capacity of Si/Fe3O4/C reaches 1363 mA h g–1 after 600 cycles at 1 A g–1. This study provides an idea for the design and fabrication of Si-based anode materials with high capacity and long cycle life.

Abstract:Li2FeSiO4/C composites have been successfully prepared by a combination of solution route and high-temperature solid-state reaction processes. The morphology and crystalline structure were characterized using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Effects of calcination temperature on the electrochemical properties of Li2FeSiO4/C composite cathodes were investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge-discharge and electrochemical impedance measurements. The XRD patterns indicate that high-purity Li2FeSiO4 with well-developed crystallinity are obtained above 600 degrees C. The primary particle size was increased by elevating the calcination temperature from 600 degrees C to 750 degrees C. The Li2FeSiO4/C composite synthesized at 650 degrees C delivers the largest initial discharge capacity of 153.2 mAh g(-1) with a capacity retention of 93.5% after 30 cycles when tested at a current density of C/16 (1C = 166 mAh g(-1)) between 1.5 and 4.8 V (vs. Li+/Li).

Abstract:Fe3C@carbonnanocapsules(*)/expanded graphite composite was successfully prepared by a new and facile method, including mix of starting materials and heat treatment of the precursor. It is featured by unique 3-D structure, where expanded graphite acts as scaffold to ensure a continuous entity, and Fe3C particles coated by carbon nanocapsules are embedded intimately. The Fe3C nanoparticles encased in carbon nanocapsules act as catalyst in the modification of SEI film during the cycles. The interesting 3-D architecture which aligns the conductivity paths in the planar direction with expanded graphite and in the axial direction with carbon nanocapsules minimizes the resistance and enhances the reversible capacity. The prepared composite exhibits a high reversible capacity and excellent rate performance as an anode material for lithium ion batteries. The composite maintains a reversible capacity of 1226.2 mAh/g after 75 cycles at 66 mA/g. When the current density increases to 200 mA/g, the reversible capacity maintains 451.5 mAh/g. The facile synthesis method and excellent electrochemical performances make the composite expected to be one of the most potential anode material for lithium ion batteries. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:At present, it is still challenging to fabricate anode materials for lithium-ion batteries with excellent electrochemical performances by simple process on a large scale. In this paper, by using a conventional solid state reaction technique along with a mechanical ball milling method, an unique Li3Fe(MoO4)3@C composite was synthesized. The amorphous carbon introduction is helpful in mitigating the volume expansion and enhancing the structural stability and electrochemical performance of the composite materials. After 100 cycles at 200 mA g−1, the Li3Fe(MoO4)3@C composite electrode maintained a high reversible capacity of 739 mAh/g with an initial Coulombic efficiency of 82 %. In addition, the rate performances of the composite electrode is also remarkable, and the reversible capacity is up to 740 mAh/g at 1600 mA g−1. This work can provide inspiration for the preparation of molybdenum based transition metal oxide composites with high electrochemical performances for other alkali metal secondary batteries.

Abstract:Utilizing cost-effective raw materials to prepare high-performance silicon-based anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is both challenging and attractive. Herein, a porous SiFe@C (pSiFe@C) composite derived from low-cost ferrosilicon is prepared via a scalable three-step procedure, including ball milling, partial etching, and carbon layer coating. The pSiFe@C material integrates the advantages of the mesoporous structure, the partially retained FeSi2 conductive phase, and a uniform carbon layer (12-16 nm), which can substantially alleviate the huge volume expansion effect in the repeated lithium-ion insertion/extraction processes, effectively stabilizing the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) film and markedly enhancing the overall electronic conductivity of the material. Benefiting from the rational structure, the obtained pSiFe@C hybrid material delivers a reversible capacity of 1162.1 mAh g(-1) after 200 cycles at 500 mA g(-1), with a higher initial coulombic efficiency of 82.30 %. In addition, it shows large discharge capacities of 803.1 and 600.0 mAh g(-1) after 500 cycles at 2 and 4 A g(-1), respectively, manifesting an excellent electrochemical lithium storage. This work provides a good prospect for the commercial production of silicon-based anode materials for LIBs with a high lithium-storage capacity.
