Abstract:Due to the interactions between mechanics and chemistry, Mg alloys are inevitably subjected to the combined effect of corrosion attack and cyclic loading, which eventually leads to corrosion fatigue failure. In this paper, fundamental aspects regarding the fatigue behavior of Mg alloys have been reviewed, including: (1) fatigue behavior of Mg alloys in air and aqueous media; and (2) the influence of microstructure, anodic dissolution, hydrogen embrittlement (HE), heat treatment and surface protection on fatigue behavior of Mg alloys. Moreover, some remaining unresolved issues and future targets to deeply understand the failure mechanism of corrosion fatigue have been described.

Abstract:Oxidation coatings were produced on AM60B Mg alloy substrates using the Microarc oxidation(MAO) technique in order to improve the anti-corrosion property of Mg alloy.The morphology,structure and composition of oxidation coatings were investigated by SEM and XRD.The results show that there are two layers in microarc oxidation coating,of which outer layer is loose and porous,inner layer is dense in structure.The coating is mainly composed of MgO,Mg2SiO4 and little MgAl2O4.The content of Mg2SiO4 decreases while MgO increases from outer layer to inner layer.The surface microhardness of MAO coatings is 7～8 times higher than Mg alloy substrate.The potentiodynamic polarization test in 3.5wt% NaCl solution indicates that the oxidation coating enhanced evidently the anti-corrosion of the magnesium alloy.

Abstract:Microarc oxidation coatings on AM60B magnesium alloy were prepared in phosphate–KOH electrolytes with and without NaAlO2 addition. The effect of NaAlO2 on the characteristic of breakdown voltage in different concentrations of NaAlO2 has been studied. The compositions, structure and morphologies of the oxide coatings formed in different concentrations of NaAlO2 were determined by energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The corrosion resistance of the oxide coatings was evaluated in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution using potentiodynamic polarization tests. The results showed that the solution conductivity increased while the values of breakdown voltage decreased with the increase of concentration of NaAlO2. In both cases the coatings contained Mg, Al, O and P as well as a trace amount of Na and K, and were mainly composed of MgO and spinel MgAl2O4. The addition of NaAlO2 into the base electrolyte resulted in the increase of spinel MgAl2O4 in the oxide coating. Furthermore, the number and size of micropores on top of the surface decreased with the increasing concentration of NaAlO2, though the surface roughness increased with the NaAlO2 addition. The coating formed in the electrolyte containing 8.0 g/L NaAlO2 exhibited the highest corrosion resistance in NaCl solution.

Abstract:The influence of Cl- concentration on the corrosion behavior of AM60 magnesium alloy has been investigated by hydrogen evolution and electrochemical tests, such as open-circuit potential (OCP) curves, polarization curves, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results indicate that corrosion resistance decreased with increasing Cl- concentration. There are diffusion tail and inductive arc at low frequencies in different sodium chloride (NaCl) solutions in EIS plots. The more concentrated NaCl solution promotes initiation of localized corrosion and the breakdown of surface film as shown in corrosion morphology and corrosion product. A corrosion model is proposed to explain the influence of chloride ion concentration on the corrosion behavior of magnesium alloy.

Abstract:The effect of pH value on the corrosion behavior and microstructural evolution of carbon fiber reinforced magnesium matrix (Cf/Mg) composites in NaCl solution were investigated. The results of the electrochemical test revealed that the corrosion current density of Cf/Mg composites in pH = 13 solution achieved 3.4 × 10−5 Am/cm2, which was one order and two orders of magnitude lower than that of pH = 7 solution (2.6 × 10−4 Am/cm2) and pH = 1 solution (1.1 × 10−3 Am/cm2), respectively. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) curves implied that the corrosion resistance of Cf/Mg composites was enhanced when the pH value increased. The microstructure of the Cf/Mg composites after corrosion in the solution with pH = 13 first appeared as some point-like bumps, and then gradually grew into a lamellar structure. The corrosion mechanisms and microstructural evolution of the Cf/Mg composites were systematically discussed.

Abstract:Corrosion behavior of AZ31 magnesium alloy in NH4 +-bearing chloride solution with controlled pH was investigated by weight loss experiment, hydrogen collection, and electrochemical test combined with surface morphology and topography observation. The results show that NH4 + and pH of the solution can affect the corrosion of AZ31 magnesium alloy. The existence of NH4 + affects the formation and dissolution of corrosion products, which makes the protective effect of the corrosion product layer weaker. The change of pH value not only affects the corrosion mechanism of AZ31, but also alters the concentration of NH4 + ions in the solution, which further influences the corrosion product layer of AZ31, and finally makes the corrosion of AZ31 change significantly.

Abstract:New AM60-RE (RE=Ce or La) alloy was prepared and its corrosion behavior was evaluated by hydrogen evolution and electrochemical methods. New γ phase containing higher content of RE and Al elements has been found. The corrosion resistance of AM60 alloy improved with addition of RE, and this improvement could attribute to depression of the micro-galvanic couples, because the fraction of β was decreased, as well as the deposited RE-containing phases were less cathodic. Moreover, RE and Al enrichment in the corrosion product films on the RE-containing alloy surface was also a key factor to the inhibition of further corrosion.

Abstract:As a post-treatment method of MAO coating, layered doubled hydroxides (LDHs) can improve the corrosion/degradation resistance of magnesium (Mg) alloys. This study innovatively prepared Co-Fe LDHs coatings on MAO treated Mg alloy AZ31, and investigated the effect of pH value on the corrosion/degradation resistance of the coatings. The results indicate that the corrosion/degradation resistance of LDHs coatings first increase and then decrease with the increase of pH. The best corrosion/degradation resistance occurred for pH = 12, with a corrosion current density ( i corr ) of 5.18×10 –8 A∙cm –2 . The i corr after immersing in NaCl solution for 14 days was 1.65×10 –6 A∙cm –2 . The Co-Fe LDHs nanosheets (pH = 12) effectively sealed the pores of the MAO coating, resulting in increased coating density and hindering the diffusion of corrosive media, thereby effectively protecting the Mg alloy. This study is of great significance for the corrosion protection and rapid degradation prevention of Mg alloys and other alloys.

Abstract:AMg61 (Al‐6.2% Mg), a novel form of high‐strength, high‐magnesium‐content aluminum alloy, has been developed for specific maritime engineering in recent years, while its corrosion behavior in seawater is still unknown. Therefore, the corrosion behavior of AMg61 in the simulated seawater was investigated herein, using a weight‐loss test and different electrochemical measurements. In addition, corrosion morphology and chemical contents were characterized by metallography, scanning electron microscopy, and energy‐dispersive spectroscopy. The results demonstrated that intergranular corrosion and microcracks developed first in the second phase of AMg61, followed by pitting corrosion. The matrix of AMg61, on the other hand, exhibited a uniform and exfoliation corrosion. The corrosion rate gradually decreased over time. Abstract:The corrosion behaviours of four kinds of rolled magnesium alloys of AZ31, AZ91, AM60 and ZK60 were studied in 1 mol/L sodium chloride solution. The results of EIS and potentiodynamic polarization show that the corrosion resistance of the four materials is ranked as ZK60>AM60>AZ31>AZ91. The corrosion processes of the four magnesium alloys were also analyzed by SEM and energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS). The results show that the corrosion patterns of the four alloys are localized corrosion and the galvanic couples formed by the second phase particles and the matrix are the main source of the localized corrosion of magnesium alloys. The corrosion resistance of the different magnesium alloys has direct relationship with the concentration of alloying elements and microstructure of magnesium alloys. The ratio of the β phase in AZ91 is higher than that in AZ31 and the β phase can form micro-galvanic cell with the alloy matrix, as a result, the corrosion resistance of AZ31 will be higher than AZ91. The manganese element in AM60 magnesium alloy can form the second phase particle of AlMnFe, which can reduce the Fe content in magnesium alloy matrix, purifying the microstructure of alloy, as a result, the corrosion resistance of AM60 is improved. However, due to the more noble galvanic couples of AlMnFe and matrix, the microscopic corrosion morphology of AM60 is more localized. The zirconium element in ZK60 magnesium alloy can refine grain, form stable compounds with Fe and Si, and purify the composition of alloy, which results in the good corrosion resistance of ZK60 magnesium alloy.
Electrochemical Impedance Fractal Study of AM60 Magnesium Alloy in Aggressive Solution

Abstract:Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS)was carried out on AM60 magnesium alloy specimens during 96 hour exposure periods into aerated 0.1mol/L NaCl,0.1mol/L Na2 SO4 and saturated Mg(0H)2 solutions.In the solutions containing C1-ions,the impedance spectroscopy takes on two capacitive loops in high frequency and middle frequency domain respedtively,while one inductive loop appears in first 36 hour immersion.The similar EIS behavior for AM60 in Na2 S04 solution had been observed,while the low frequency relaxation behavior is different.Comparing to the C1-ions,the S042-ions presented relatively weak corrosive ability.In the saturated Mg(OH)2 solution,due tO the anodic and cathodic reaction were restrained from the polarization curves by weak hydrolyzation of Mg(OH)2,the EIS behavior of AM60 differs from that in the other two aggressive ions solution.A relatively new method was applied to research the corrosion process with detail.Fractal dimension was calculated from the high frequency capacitive arc which was corresponding to the origin surface double electronic layer of AM60 magnesium in three kind solutions.The curves of fraetal dimension vs immersion time indicated that C1-ions presented the strongest corrosive attack,also shown the best self-repassivation behavior to recover the pits which.were produced by the existefiee of C1-ions.The SO42-ions attacked the surface of AM60,while the repassivation could be ignored.The increase of fractal dimension in Mg(OH)2 was mainly due to the adsorption of infusibility Mg(OH)2 on the surface increasing surface roughness.

Abstract:Recently, magnesium (Mg) alloys have attracted extensive attention as biodegradable implant materials. However, cyclic loading and the corrosive environment of the body are significant challenges for the practical use of alloys, and there are few studies on this topic. In this study, we conducted a four-point bending fatigue test for 86,400 cycles (12 h) in simulated body fluid (SBF), plasma, and whole blood with an AZ series alloy Mg-9Al-0.5Zn-0.27Mn-0.12Ag, to examine the effects of inorganic ions, organic particles, blood cells, and cyclic loading on Mg alloy corrosion. The Mg2+ concentration and solution pH were measured before and after experimentation, and the sample surfaces were characterized by 3D digital microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).
Impact of Corrosion in Simulated Body Fluid on Fatigue Characteristics of 3D-Printed Polylactic Acid-Coated AM60 Magnesium Alloys

Abstract:In this research, the pure fatigue behaviors of AM60 magnesium alloy with polylactic acid (PLA) coating (PF-AM60-PLA) and the corrosion fatigue behaviors of magnesium alloy with PLA coating (CF-AM60-PLA) were evaluated. Polymer coating was made by fused deposition modeling (FDM) with a 3D printer and attached to standard fatigue test specimens with glue. Then, after 27 days of immersion in the simulated body fluid (SBF), the high-cycle bending fatigue test was performed on samples. Due to corrosion, the weight of the specimens was reduced by an average of 35%. The corrosion rate decreased in the first 7 days and then increased. PF samples with a coating had an average 49% increase in fatigue lifetime. Regarding the CF samples, despite the use of a 10-times stronger solution, the fatigue lifetime of these samples decreased by only 35%. The field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) results also showed cleavage plates and striations. In addition, the separation of the glue from the coating and Mg was observed. Corrosion products, in addition to microcracks and holes, were seen on the fracture surface of CF specimens, which caused the stress concentration and the crack initiation. Holes caused by the release of gases were also observed in polymer coatings, which were fabricated by 3D printing.
Effect of Precipitate Characteristics on the Corrosion Behavior of a AZ80 Magnesium Alloy

Abstract:In this study, a systematic investigation on the effect of both aging temperature (250 °C and 330 °C) and time (chosen based on aging curves) on the distribution and volume fraction of the Mg17Al12 precipitates and subsequently on the corrosion behavior of the AZ80 magnesium alloy was carried out by conducting both immersion and dynamic polarization test in a freely aerated 3.5% NaCl solution. The analysis of corrosion products using Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction and investigation of corrosion morphologies using scanning electron microscopy suggested galvanic corrosion of the anodic α-Mg matrix in contact with the cathodic Mg17Al12 precipitates. The higher corrosion resistance of the alloy aged at lower temperature (250 °C) was attributed to the higher number density of the Mg17Al12 precipitates than that at higher temperature (330 °C). In the peak aged condition, the average number densities of precipitates (1/µm2) were measured to be ~ 0.74 and ~ 0.32 and average corrosion rates (mm/y) were measured to be ~ 3.0 and ~ 5.0 at the aging temperatures of 250 °C and 330 °C, respectively. At a particular aging temperature, the corrosion resistance increased to a maximum at peak-aged condition followed by a decline in the over-aged condition and further increase with prolong aging, which was correlated with the number density, size and distribution of the Mg17Al12 precipitates.<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Graphic </h3>

Abstract:Magnesium alloys have been recently developed as biodegradable implant materials, yet there has been no study concerning their corrosion fatigue properties under cyclic loading. In this study the die-cast AZ91D (A for aluminum 9%, Z for zinc 1% and D for a fourth phase) and extruded WE43 (W for yttrium 4%, E for rare earth mischmetal 3%) alloys were chosen to evaluate their fatigue and corrosion fatigue behaviors in simulated body fluid (SBF). The die-cast AZ91D alloy indicated a fatigue limit of 50MPa at 107 cycles in air compared to 20MPa at 106 cycles tested in SBF at 37°C. A fatigue limit of 110MPa at 107 cycles in air was observed for extruded WE43 alloy compared to 40MPa at 107 cycles tested in SBF at 37°C. The fatigue cracks initiated from the micropores when tested in air and from corrosion pits when tested in SBF, respectively. The overload zone of the extruded WE43 alloy exhibited a ductile fracture mode with deep dimples, in comparison to a brittle fracture mode for the die-cast AZ91D. The corrosion rate of the two experimental alloys increased under cyclic loading compared to that in the static immersion test.

Abstract:In order to investigate the effect of solution pH on stress corrosion and electrochemical behavior of aluminum alloy with micro-arc oxidation (MAO) coating, the constant load test and in situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) had been carried out on 7050-T6 aluminum alloys (AA7050-T6) with MAO coating in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution at pH 3, pH 7 and pH 13. EIS was used to evaluate corrosion process of MAO coating and the corresponding equivalent circuit model was established. The results of EIS and mechanical properties of MAO specimens after constant load test exhibited that pH have a significant effect on the corrosion resistance and plasticity of the aluminum alloy with MAO coating. The corrosion resistance was as follows: pH 7 > pH 3 > pH 13. The loss of plasticity was as follows: pH 7 < pH 3 < pH 13. The EIS and the corroded surface morphology demonstrated that the corrosion damage was dominated by pitting corrosion in 3.5%wt NaCl solution at pH 3 and 7. General corrosion was dominant in 3.5%wt NaCl solution at pH 13. In 3.5 wt% NaCl solution at pH 3 and 7, the corrosion resistance decreased at first and then increased at the beginning of corrosion. In the middle stage, the corrosion resistance decreased at first and then stabilized. The corrosion resistance decreased again in the final stage of corrosion. In 3.5 wt% NaCl solution at pH 13, the corrosion resistance decreased at the beginning of corrosion and then increased, and the MAO coating exfoliated completely in the middle stage of corrosion.

Abstract:To improve the mechanical properties of magnesium alloys,Sr as well as rare earth Y and Nd were introduced into AM60B.The chemical components and phase composition were analyzed using fluorescent X-ray and XRD.The influence of the additives on the mechanical properties of AM60B was studied.Also,the fracture surface of the specimens was investigated by SEM and the fracture behavior was discussed.The results showed that the mechanical properties of AM60B magnesium alloy were improved by the addition of Sr and rare earth elements Y and Nd.The highest values of the tensile strength and the elongation percentage reached 224.57 MPa and 9.25% respectively for AM60B magnesium alloy with the addition of Sr and Nd,which were enhanced 32% and 38% respectively than those of AM60B magnesium alloy.The yield strength of the alloy was also improved.Therefore,this alloy was optimized to be used for high temperature creep resistance test.

Abstract:Aluminium alloys are widely used in the fields of automobile, machinery and naval construction. To investigate the effect of non-proportional loadings and corrosive environment on the fatigue resistance of 6061-T6 aluminum alloy, a set of uniaxial and multiaxial low cycle fatigue tests were carried out. Firstly, the results of uniaxial tests showed that the alloy exhibited cyclic hardening then cyclic softening. With the increase of stress amplitude the cyclic softening became pronounced. The increasing of plastic deformation was basically cyclically stable with small plastic strain amplitude accumulation when the stress amplitude was lower than 200MPa ,while it was increasing rapidly when the stress amplitude was higher than 220MPa. Secondly, it was observed that non-proportional cycle additional hardening of 6061-T6 aluminum alloy was little. While the fatigue life was badly affected by the loading paths. Thirdly ,the fatigue corrosion interactions were also talked about in details by performing the tests under the same loading conditions with corrosive environment. The experiment proved that the seawater corrosion has huge impact on fatigue life under pH 3. Finally, a multi-axial fatigue life prediction model was used to predict the fatigue life with or without the corrosive environment which showed a good agreement with experimental data.

Abstract:Anodic coatings were obtained by micro-arc oxidation on AZ91HP magnesium alloys in a solution containing 10 g/L NaOH and 8 g/L phytic acid. The effects of electric parameters including frequency, final voltage, duty cycle and current density on the corrosion resistance of anodic coatings formed on the magnesium alloys were investigated by using an orthogonal experiment of four factors with three levels. The results show that the final voltage plays a main role on the coating properties. The orders of affecting corrosion resistance and coating thickness are separately ranked from high to low as, final voltage>duty cycle>current density>frequency and final voltage>current density>frequency>duty cycle. The final voltage influences the corrosion resistance of the anodized samples mainly by changing the surface morphology and coating thickness.
