Abstract:Due to the interactions between mechanics and chemistry, Mg alloys are inevitably subjected to the combined effect of corrosion attack and cyclic loading, which eventually leads to corrosion fatigue failure. In this paper, fundamental aspects regarding the fatigue behavior of Mg alloys have been reviewed, including: (1) fatigue behavior of Mg alloys in air and aqueous media; and (2) the influence of microstructure, anodic dissolution, hydrogen embrittlement (HE), heat treatment and surface protection on fatigue behavior of Mg alloys. Moreover, some remaining unresolved issues and future targets to deeply understand the failure mechanism of corrosion fatigue have been described.

Abstract:Magnesium alloys are advanced light structural and functional materials being increasingly used in the automotive, aerospace, electronic, and energy industries. However, their corrosion performance at the current stage of development is still not good enough for increasingly diverse practical applications. The Cooperative Research Centre for Cast Metals Manufacturing (CAST) in Australia is one of the most active research organizations in the world established to cope with the problems associated with the development and application of advanced light metals. Corrosion and prevention of magnesium and its alloys is an important part of CAST's research program. This paper presents a brief summary of recent research achievements by CAST and relevant research work in this area in the world. This overview covers “anodic hydrogen evolution”, estimation of corrosion rate, corrosion of aluminum‐ and non‐aluminum‐containing magnesium alloys, influences of composition and microstructure on corrosion, corrosion of a die‐cast magnesium alloy, galvanic corrosion, coolant corrosion, and an aluminum‐alloyed coating. The aim of this overview is to deepen the current understanding of corrosion and protection of magnesium and its alloys and to provide a base for future research work in this field. Although corrosion performance is currently a severe problem with magnesium alloys, the prospect for magnesium alloys is promising because of their attractive advantages and potential applications. How to solve the corrosion problem has now become an important issue in the application of magnesium alloys. The aim of this overview is to deepen the current understanding of corrosion and protection of magnesium and its alloys and to provide a base for future research work in this field.

Abstract:This review provided some recent progress of the research on corrosion mechanisms of magnesium and its alloys and a basis for follow-on research. Galvanic corrosion, pitting corrosion, intergranular corrosion (IGC), filiform corrosion, crevice corrosion, stress corrosion cracking (SCC), and corrosion fatigue (CF) were discussed. The influence of metallurgical factors such as alloying elements, microstructure and secondary phases, processing factors such as heat treatment and weld, and environmental factors including temperature, relative humidity, solution pH values and concentration on corrosion were discussed. In particular, a mechanism of pitting corrosion caused by AIMn particles was proposed. The corrosion properties of AZ91D weld material were investigated.

Abstract:The demand for light-weighting in transport and consumer electronics has seen rapid growth in the commercial usage of magnesium (Mg). The major use of Mg is now in cast Mg products, as opposed to the use of Mg as an alloying element in other alloy systems and there is an emerging market of wrought Mg products and biomedical Mg components – such that the past two decades have seen a significant number of new Mg-alloys reported. None-the-less, the corrosion of Mg alloys continues to be a challenge facing engineers seeking weight reductions by deployment of Mg. Herein, authors review the influence of alloying on the corrosion of Mg-alloys, with particular emphasis on the underlying electrochemical kinetics that dictate the ultimate corrosion rate. Such a review focusing on the chemistry–corrosion link, both in depth and in a holistic approach, is lacking. As such the authors do not describe aspects such as high-temperature oxidation or cracking, but focus on delivering the state-of-the-art with regards to alloying influences on corrosion kinetics. It has been demonstrated that Mg itself will not be thermodynamically passive in environments of pH<11, regardless of the extent and type of alloying and hence corrosion kinetics require unique attention. Authors consolidate the presentation to include essentially all commercially available alloys and in excess of 350 custom alloys with wide variations in composition; in addition to reviewing the range of intermetallic compounds and impurities that form in such alloys systems. An update is also given regarding mechanistic advances and the role of grain size on corrosion of Mg. A wider understanding of the role of chemical effects upon corrosion of Mg is both timely and serves to highlight metallurgical approaches towards kinetically retarding the corrosion problem. The latter is of key relevance to next generation lightweight alloys and rational design of wrought Mg and bio-Mg.

Abstract:Magnesium and its alloys have received wide attention due to their excellent properties. However, magnesium alloy is easy to corrosion, limiting its large‐scale use. This review summarizes several typical anticorrosion methods for magnesium alloys, including anodic oxide film treatment, micro‐arc oxidation treatment, laser surface treatment, and superhydrophobic coating, etc. Magnesium (Mg) and its alloys have received much attention in the aerospace, transportation, automotive industry, and military equipment fields due to their unique chemical and physical properties, such as their low density and high specific strength, particularly as the lightest structural metal materials, with the opportunity to achieve the design of lighter engineering systems. With the continuous improvement of processing technology, the application scope of magnesium alloy is rapidly expanding, and market demand is increasing. However, because of its significant electronegativity (2.37 V) and loose naturally formed oxide coating, magnesium has low corrosion resistance in comparison to other structural metal elements, severely limiting its large‐scale use. This review summarizes several typical anticorrosion methods for magnesium alloys, including chemical conversion coating treatment, anodic oxide film treatment, micro‐arc oxidation treatment, laser surface treatment, ion implantation, physical vapor deposition, and superhydrophobic coating. In most cases, the corrosion resistance of magnesium and its alloys has improved, but it has a certain degree of environmental damage. It is hoped that this review will contribute to further developing magnesium alloy materials in the field of preservative coating.

Abstract:Industrial deployment of magnesium alloys in most instances requires anti-corrosion coatings. Distinct from conversion coatings, the electro/electroless plating techniques are emerging as the common means of coating magnesium; however, more research is needed. A state-of-the-art review was undertaken with respect to aqueous plating systems (including pretreatment, under-coating, and electroplating), electroless plating (being treated individually, though it is used as undercoating for subsequent plating in some cases), non-aqueous plating systems (including high-temperature molten salts and ionic liquids), and novel plating methods. In addition to the performance assessment of various plated coatings on magnesium alloys, merits and demerits of existing plating techniques are discussed. Based on the literature to date, the practical issues faced in magnesium plating are raised, and possible advances discussed, providing some instructive guidelines for future work.

Abstract:Magnesium alloys are of significant importance for lightweight manufacturing and weight-saving applications due to their high weight-to-strength ratio and good mechanical properties. However, the poor corrosion resistance of Mg alloys limits their large-scale practical application. An essential theoretical foundation for the development of corrosion-resistant magnesium alloys and their surface protection technologies can be elucidated via the investigation of the corrosion mechanism of the magnesium surface and the alteration of the corrosion rate after surface conversion and coating. This paper discusses some typical corrosion behaviors by originally describing the corrosion mechanism of magnesium alloys with and without different coatings and surface treatments. In order to predict the future theoretical investigation and research directions for the surface protection of magnesium alloys, some techniques and preventative measures to enhance the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys are reviewed, and these protection techniques are intercompared for better understanding.

Abstract:It is well known that the poor corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys is a key factor limiting their application. Field exposure is the most reliable means to evaluate the atmospheric corrosion performance of magnesium alloys. This article reviews the field exposure corrosion behavior of magnesium alloys in typical atmospheric environments (including the marine atmosphere, industrial atmosphere, etc.) in recent years. According to the literature review, it was found that there are significant regional differences in the atmospheric corrosion behavior of magnesium alloys, which is the result of the coupling of multiple factors in the atmospheric environment. By investigating the corrosion rate and corrosion products of different types of magnesium alloys in different environments, the corrosion mechanism of magnesium alloys in different environments was summarized. Specifically, environmental parameters such as atmospheric temperature, relative humidity, CO2, and chloride ion deposition rates in the marine atmospheric environment can affect the corrosion behavior of magnesium alloys. The corrosion of magnesium alloys in different industrial atmospheric environments is mainly affected by atmospheric temperature and relative humidity, as well as atmospheric pollutants (such as SO2, CO2, NO2) and dust. This review provides assistance to the development of new corrosion-resistant magnesium alloys.

Abstract:Magnesium-lithium(Mg-Li)alloy have attracted considerable interest in automobiles, aerospace,military and nuclear industries because of their super lightweight,high strength,high ductility and good formability. However,the high chemical activity of lithium means the Mg-Li alloys are susceptible to corrode in applied environment and difficult to protect,which limit their widespread practical application. Therefore,it is important to investigate the corrosion mechanism of Mg-Li alloys and develop efficiently anticorrosion technology. In this paper,a review was provided on the current status of corrosion mechanism of Mg-Li alloys in atmosphere,neutral and alkaline NaCl solution and Hank's solution based on recent progress at home and abroad. The corrosion behavior of Mg-Li alloys in different environment was introduced. The research progress of surface protection technologies for Mg-Li alloys were systematically summarized,including anodic oxidation,electroplating and electroless plating,chemical conversion coatings,coating and other surface anticorrosion methods. The advantages and disadvantages of these methods were analyzed. The future developments of the surface protection technology for Mg-Li alloy were also prospected. This paper proposed that anticorrosion and practicability of coatings for Mg-Li alloys could improve by composite,functionalization and self-healing.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to provide a succinct but nevertheless complete mechanistic overview of the various types of magnesium corrosion. The understanding of the corrosion processes of magnesium alloys builds upon our understanding of the corrosion of pure magnesium. This provides an understanding of the types of corrosion exhibited by magnesium alloys, and also of the environmental factors of most importance. This deep understanding is required as a foundation if we are to produce magnesium alloys much more resistant to corrosion than the present alloys. Much has already been achieved, but there is vast scope for improvement. This present analysis can provide a foundation and a theoretical framework for further, much needed research. There is still vast scope both for better fundamental understanding of corrosion processes, engineering usage of magnesium, and also on the corrosion protection of magnesium alloys in service. The purpose of this paper is to provide a succinct but nevertheless complete mechanistic overview of the various types of magnesium corrosion. Abstract:Research on magnesium alloys continues to attract great attention, with more than 3000 papers on magnesium and magnesium alloys published and indexed in SCI in 2020 alone. The results of bibliometric analyses show that microstructure control and mechanical properties of Mg alloys are continuously the main research focus, and the corrosion and protection of Mg alloys are still widely concerned. The emerging research hot spots are mainly on functional magnesium materials, such as Mg ion batteries, hydrogen storage Mg materials, and bio-magnesium alloys. Great contributions to the research and development of magnesium alloys in 2020 have been made by Chongqing University, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Central South University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Northeastern University, Helmholtz Zentrum Geesthacht, etc. The directions for future research are suggested, including: 1) the synergistic control of microstructures to achieve high-performance magnesium alloys with concurrent high strength and superior plasticity along with high corrosion resistance and low cost; 2) further development of functional magnesium materials such as Mg batteries, hydrogen storage Mg materials, structural-functional materials and bio-magnesium materials; 3) studies on the effective corrosion protection and control of degradation rate of magnesium alloys; 4) further improvement of advanced processing technology on Mg alloys.

Abstract:Magnesium-based amorphous alloys have aroused broad interest in being applied in marine use due to their merits of lightweight and high strength. Yet, the poor corrosion resistance to chloride-containing seawater has hindered their practical applications. Herein, we propose a new strategy to improve the chloride corrosion resistance of amorphous Mg65Cu15Ag10Gd10 alloys by engineering atomic-to-nano scale structural homogeneity, which is implemented by heating the material to the critical temperature of the liquid–liquid transition. By using various electrochemical, microscopic, and spectroscopic characterization methods, we reveal that the liquid–liquid transition can rearrange the local structural units in the amorphous structure, slightly decreasing the alloy structure's homogeneity, accelerate the formation of protective passivation film, and, therefore, increase the corrosion resistance. Our study has demonstrated the strong coupling between an amorphous structure and corrosion behavior, which is available for optimizing corrosion-resistant alloys.
