Abstract:Production of electricity using solar collectors is determined to a large extent by the price and energy required to produce pure silicon. Inexpensive metallurgical-grade silicon is produced from sand by an established technology. It can be converted to solar grade using a closed loop design. Thus, there is a need to design better deposition reactors. One such design presented here has the potential to be easily scaled up to obtain high rates of silicon production (electrically heated silicon deposition reactors cannot be scaled up due to heat transfer limitations). The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) reactor simulation presented in this chapter operates at higher velocities with no bubble and has no size limitation because the energy needed for trichlorosilane decomposition and preheating is supplied by high voltage silicon rods.
