Abstract:This paper presents a review on the sources of failures of transformer in the substation. Different investigations and test analyses have been conducted to identify the root causes of failure of the transformer in the power system, and to identify the preventive measures to avoid these breakdowns. The review work has been presented with the focus on bushing-failure, which has been identified as one of the major causes of transformer breakdown in different reported studies. In determining the lifespan of the insulation of the high voltage bushing, along with different factors, moisture effect has also been considered in presenting the degradation analysis. On-line measurement has been preferred over off-line measurements due to its benefits measuring the reliability and uninterrupted functioning of the future generation, transmission and distribution systems. Post fire-outbreak, external inspection of the damaged bushing along with analytical results, obtained with the aid of Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) analysis, have also been included in this study. In the analysis, electric field and equipotential lines with different oil levels have been simulated using COMSOL Multiphysics software.
An Advanced Method for Detection of Partial Discharge in Oil-Paper Insulated Transformer Bushings and Current Transformers

Abstract:Partial discharge (PD) detection is an important method to detect the defects in high-voltage bushings. Existing PD detection methods for bushings still have some problems related to the sensitivity and the anti-interference capacity. In this paper, an advanced method for the detection of PD in capacitor bushings is proposed to overcome the disadvantages of the conventional PD detection methods. The PD signal is captured by an inductor attached to the tap of the bushing, and all pulses that appear in a certain period are recorded by the oscilloscope. This method is considered to be more sensitive compared to conventional methods, and with the available information such as the frequency spectrum and phase distribution, the interference signal can be eliminated. Experiments on PD due to typical defects in capacitor bushings are carried out to validate the proposed method, and the results show that this method is effective in detecting some typical defects in bushing.

Abstract:<p>The insulation failure mechanism of the resin impregnated paper (RIP) valve-side bushings of HVDC converter transformer under high ambient temperature and strong electromagnetic field conditions is explored in this study via a novel electro-thermal comprehensive analysis method. Considering that the bushings are operating under Multiple-Frequency Voltage and Current Harmonics, a superposition analysis method is established for voltage and current with five frequencies based on a Fourier spectrum analysis of the rated voltage waveform and full-load current waveform. Calculation methods for the heat loss, temperature field, and electric field of RIP bushings at the converter transformer valve-side are then established under two defect conditions: <a class="workspace-trigger" href="#e0005">(1)</a> overheating defect caused by an abnormal spring contact at the copper-aluminium conductive tube transition joint and <a class="workspace-trigger" href="#e0010">(2)</a> electric potential suspension caused by disconnection between the outmost condenser's foil layer and grounded flange. An overheating defect in a valve-side bushing with spring contact at the conductive tube is successfully identified by the proposed method to prove its effectiveness. This method can be used to optimize bushing insulation and current-carrying structures as well as to diagnose insulation failures in RIP valve-side bushings.</p>

Abstract:Power transformer bushings withstand great electrical and mechanical stress during high voltage and high current working conditions. Sealing failure poses a great threat to the long-term and reliable operation of the bushing and power transformer; however, the criterion to evaluate the sealing status of a bushing caused by mechanical problems is still lacking. In this paper, a transformer bushing model is established to gain theoretical insight into the relationship between temperature and pressure of a compact multilayer bushing. To evaluate the bushing mechanical status, different sealing conditions are tested based on the temperature and pressure monitoring within the physical 110 kV bushing. The results show that mechanical sealing failure can be diagnosed when the fluctuation of the oil pressure value exceeds the theoretical curve in steady state by 3 kPa. With different reliability coefficients, gas leakage and oil leakage are available to be further determined. The primary and auxiliary criteria based on oil pressure and its gradient are proposed to evaluate comprehensively the actual sealing condition of the bushing, and a wireless oil pressure module is developed at the bottom valve, which is quite beneficial to field online application. It is promising to extend the online mechanical monitoring and diagnosis to oil-immersed power equipment.

Abstract:The health status of main transformer bushing is directly related to the safe and stable operation of power grid. This paper introduces an abnormal dielectric loss factor of glass fiber reinforced plastic dry bushing of 220 kV main transformer. Firstly, the casing defects were determined based on the frequency domain dielectric spectrum. Then, the causes of the casing defects were analyzed by the partial discharge test, the casing disintegration inspection, the final screen dielectric loss test and the electromagnetic field simulation calculation. Finally, the diagnosis method and the preventive measures of the glass fiber reinforced dry casing defects were proposed. The research results of this paper have certain reference and guiding significance for the safe operation of this type of main transformer bushing.

Abstract:There exists a complicated mapping relationship between the types of transformer faults and the compositions and concentrations of dissolved gases in transformer oil. A methodology based on multi-objective optimization and case-based reasoning (CBR) is proposed to diagnose transformer faults by analyzing the dissolved gas analysis data. Considering the characteristics of the features used in the transformer diagnosis model, the targeted improvements are made in the preprocessing phase of the features to protect the diversities of samples. The quality of the feature subset is quantified by the internal cross-validation based on the CBR, and the feature subset is optimized by NSGA-II, considering both the classification performance and the size of the feature subset. The effect of the algorithm parameters on the performance is investigated, and the results validate the robustness of the proposed methodology. The proposed methodology is applied to diagnose cases from the IEC TC 10 database, achieving a 100% fault type recognition accuracy and a 92.6% severity evaluation accuracy.

Abstract:Abstract In order to reasonably evaluate the effectiveness of UHF sensor arrangement in online monitoring of partial discharge of bushing, it is necessary to study the electromagnetic wave propagation characteristics of partial discharge UHF in the bushing. In this paper, a three-dimensional model of a real transformer bushing is established, the XFDTD software is used to simulate the raised seat defects and internal capacitive core defects of the bushing, field strength sensors are arranged at different locations inside and outside the bushing, and the propagation process of partial discharge UHF signals leaking from the oil-paper insulated bushing to the external free space is simulated and analyzed. The results show that the time difference between the signals received by the field strength sensors at different locations is not significant and can be neglected in practice. The partial discharge electromagnetic wave signal generated by the bushing elevated seat defect leaks from the upper porcelain sleeve to the external space, and the leaked electromagnetic wave energy is mainly gathered at the upper and lower ends of the upper porcelain sleeve. The partially discharged electromagnetic signal at the capacitor core inside the bushing will propagate along the coaxial waveguide structure formed between the capacitor screens towards the two ends of the capacitor core, the downward propagating electromagnetic wave energy is confined within the elevated seat, the upward propagating electromagnetic wave energy propagates from the top of the upper porcelain bushing to the external space, the leaked electromagnetic wave energy is mainly concentrated at the top of the upper porcelain bushing. The simulation results provide ideas for optimizing the arrangement of external antenna sensors for UHF detection of partial discharges in transformer oil-paper insulated bushings.

Abstract:In this paper, the vibration of power transformer windings is studied with the aim of identifying the winding structural condition. A winding vibration model coupled with electromagnetic force analysis is proposed to obtain the steady-state vibration distribution along the axial direction. During the experiment, the model was validated on a full size, 50MVA, three phase power transformer. Good agreement was found between the measured vibrations and the vibrations that were calculated from the model developed in this study for a healthy winding. The effect of the winding clamping force on vibration is studied to assess the winding clamping state, and different types of winding deformations were simulated to extract diagnostic information. The preliminary study shows that it is feasible to predict the mechanical faults of transformer windings with the vibration method.
A Feasibility Study on Bushing Tap UHF Sensing Method for Partial Discharge in Transformer

Abstract:the paper proposes a new detection method for partial discharge in transformer. Different from conventional UHF method, which mainly detects electromagnetic wave motivated by discharge, the proposed method detects current pulse signal excited by discharge in UHF band from bushing tap grounding wire. An experiment is performed to study feasibility of the proposed method and to make a contrast with conventional UHF method. It is concluded that, though the sensitivity of proposed method is a little lower compared to internal antenna UHF method, it is still enough to detect partial discharge effectively, and the proposed method is easy to operate and out of problems such as seal which internal UHF method owns. The proposed method offers a relatively practical solution to on-site detection for partial discharge in transformer.

Abstract:HFCT method is a common detection technology for partial discharge (PD) in transformer. However, it suffers a lot from electromagnetic interference in field applications because conventional detection band of it is relatively low, usually in HF band. In this paper, a HFCT, which frequency response includes the whole of the VHF band and extends up to 500 MHz in the UHF band, is adopted to improve the anti-interference capacity of HFCT method. And we make a full investigation on the detection characteristics of HFCT method in UHF band based on an actual 220 kV transformer with complete internal structures. Four typical defects model is established as PD sources, additionally, conventional methods are also adopted in the experiment to make comparison with HFCT method in UHF band. The experiment results indicate that HFCT method can detect PD effectively in UHF band, and the detection sensitivity of it is no less than that of conventional methods. The results confirm the effectiveness of HFCT method in UHF band, therefore, the problem of low anti-interference capacity of conventional HFCT method that detects PD in HF band can be overcome. It offers a new effective and practical solution for transformer field monitoring of PD, especially for the transformers to which internal antenna UHF method can't be applied due to the lack of dielectric window.

Abstract:The compact design is suitable for the urban areas with intensive loads. The flexible multistate switch (FMS) can effectively reduce the footprint by removing transformers, which is the development trend of the flexible AC distribution equipment. In PSCAD/EMTDC, a simulation model containing two supply areas embedded in a transformerless FMS is built. Through the single-phase grounding fault simulation under the arc suppression coil grounding, the characteristics of zero-sequence component of FMS are analysed. By means of circuit analysis and sequence component decomposition, the intrinsic mechanism of AC/DC voltage fluctuation in the non-fault supply area caused by the zero-sequence component at the fault area is analysed, and the simulation result is explained. Based on the feeder transformation, a new protection and control scheme is proposed to overcome the problem of the zero-sequence ride through among different supply areas.

Abstract:Abstract The bushing is one of the most important components of power transformer, and it is very important to find the internal defects of bushings as soon as possible, effectively and accurately diagnose its insulation state information. In this paper, the active power loss of 500kV transformer bushings have been analyzed, and the insulation state evaluation method based on active power loss is proposed. To verify the feasibility of evaluation method, one abnormal 500kV transformer bushing was selected to analyze its insulation state. The result shows that this method can be used as a powerful complement to tarδ.

Abstract:Bushing plays a significant role in insulation and mechanical support for power transformers. Its working state is closely related to the reliable operation of power transformers. To overcome the electromagnetic interference and security risks during sensor installation, a Sagnac interference optical technique for partial discharge (PD) detection is proposed in this paper. By establishing a simulation model of the sensing structure, it is verified that output signal amplitude varies periodically with the length of sensing and delay fibers. Moreover, the output value decreases with increasing probe radius. The results show that a delay fiber of 1.5 km, a sensing fiber of 3 m, and a bending radius of 5 mm are optimal parameter combinations to detect PD in a 72.5 kV defective bushing. In addition, consistent detection waveforms induced by both internal and external defects are obtained by the optical sensor and high frequency current transformer (HFCT) simultaneously, then the effectiveness of the optical sensor on detecting PD signals for bushing is verified. It is of great help to carry out online monitoring of bushing insulation defects through optical non-destructive installation.

Abstract:局部放电测量技术作为检验电气设备内部绝缘好坏的有效手段得到越来越普遍的应用。采用“多端测量 ,多端校正”及电气一超声联合测试 ,可准确发现并确定现场安装后的电力变压器内部存在的缺陷及其位置。试验结果表明 ,在现场进行电力变压器的局部放电试验 ,对提高安装质量 ,防止设备损坏及保证电网的安全运行将会起到积极的作用。

Abstract:Transformer is the core equipment in power plant and substation. Its safety problem directly affects the normal operation of the whole power plant or substation. In the event of fire, it not only affects the normal operation and system load of the system, but also affects the normal operation and load of the system. In this paper, the main causes of transformer fire, fire pre-warning technology and fire extinguishing technology are introduced comprehensively. A on-line detection fire warning technology without blackout is proposed by analyzing transformer operating noise. Finally, the substation fire protection technology from the aspect of civil engineering design is introduced briefly.

Abstract:As one of the most important electrical equipment in power system, the stable operation of transformer is the key factor to ensure the safety of power grid system. Winding deformation is the most common fault of transformer, which will seriously affect the reliable operation of the whole power system. Therefore, the detection of transformer winding deformation is of great significance to prevent transformer accidents. In order to further improve the reliability of transformer winding deformation detection, this paper proposes a transformer winding deformation detection method based on oscillation wave method. Firstly, the equivalent circuit model of transformer winding is established, and the transformer winding fault is simulated by changing the inductance and capacitance parameters in the model, and the law between the change of oscillation wave curve and the change of related performance indexes and equivalent parameters is obtained. Finally, the field test verification is carried out on a 10 kV transformer in the laboratory. The results show that the oscillation wave method can diagnose the transformer winding deformation and can be used for the actual transformer winding deformation detection.

Abstract:Partial discharge of a 500 kV power transformer seriously exceed under 680 kV in routine ACSD test. After the accident, phased oil sampling analysis is taken to the transformer, the diagnostic tests are carried out after check wiring and test equipment. The oil sample test and analysis results indicated the fault of transformer is internal fault. Subsequently , the high-voltage head hanging core examination reveals the outermost insulation and regulated lead insulation wood screws and other parts have traces of discharge. Through the discharge site and the surrounding electric field simulation analysis , clear the discharge path, combined with experimental phenomena, determines that the failure is caused by a design flaw of the transformer and low dielectric strength of the insulation member caused. The corresponding maintenance treatment program is proposed. The accident analysis and processing programs can provide proposals for improving the follow-up of power transformer design and production process.
