Abstract:Calcium carbonate was surface treated by acrylic acid monomer, its polymerization with varied mean molecular weight and PS/PAA copolymer. Coating efficiencies for these four series of surface-treated calcium carbonate were investigated. They differ from each other in many aspects. We hypothesize that the treating molecules bond to and align on the particle surface in different ways before and after monolayer coverage was reached. NIR spectra of surface-treated samples studied not only reflected the amount of bonded treating agents by means of the value of absorbance, but also gave rich structural information of surface layer. This gave us a powerful means to investigate the interface of particle surface.
In Situ Polymerization of Poly(methyl Methacrylate)/clay Nanocomposites in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide

Abstract:Poly(methyl methacrylate)/clay nanocomposites have been prepared using a pseudo-dispersion polymerization of MMA monomer in the presence of fluorinated surfactant-modified clay (10F-clay) in supercritical carbon dioxide. The nanocomposites are characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermal gravimetric analysis, and dynamic mechanical analysis and show partially exfoliated/interealated structures as well as enhanced thermal stabilities, glass transition temperatures, and mechanical properties. It is also found that 10F-clay served not only as an inorganic filler but also as an effective stabilizer for PMMA polymerization in CO2. The nature of the stabilizing mechanisms is inferred from FTIR studies. This CO2-mediated route allows for a clean synthesis of nanocomposites with high yields without the need for extra surfactant to stabilize the system.

Abstract:The in-situ suspension polymerization of vinyl chloride with nano-calcium carbonate was performed in 5 L autoclave to study the influences of nano-calcium carbonate on polymerization reaction and properties of product.It was observed that,with the addition of nano-calcium carbonate,the pressure of reaction system started to decrease earlier,and molecular weight and its distribution index of the obtained resin increased slightly.It was also found that the nano-filler didn′t affect the glass transition temperature of the resin,but increased its thermal stability.Influences of nano-filler on the mean particle size and its distrbution of resin are not significant ,but the oil absorption of filled resin increased.The mechanic properties of filled resin were also studied and the resutls showed that the impact strength of composites prepared by in -situ polymerization was twice as much as that of pure resin,and its tensile strength and break elongation ratio were better than that of blended resin.
Study on Surface Modification of Nano-Calcium Carbonate in Ethanol and Its In-situ Composite

Abstract:Nano-calcium carbonate (nano-CaCO_3) particle was surface modified with methacrylic acid (MAA) in a medium of ethanol. The carboxyl groups of MMA were anchored on the surface of nano- CaCO_3 particle and the double bonds were preserved for further reactions. The effects of the dosage of MMA, the pH of the medium, treating time and temperature on the morphology of the modified parti- cles and the stability of the dispersion were investigated in order to optimize modification process. Polystyrene/nano-CaCO_3 composites were prepared via in-situ bulk polymerization. TEM showed that nano-CaCO_3 particles with diameters less than 100 nm were distributed homogeneously in polymer matrix. When the content of nano-CaCO_3 was between 7 % and 8 %, the toughness and tensile strength of the composites reached their maxima, which were 258 % and 311% that of neat polystyrene, respectively.

Abstract:In this paper, particulate calcium carbonate is surface treated by PS(polystyrene)-b-PAA ( polyacrylic acid) with varied amount. By measuring the dissolve curve, coating efficiency, NIR and XPS spectra, the way PS-b-PAA molecules align around and react on the surface of calcium carbonate are deduced. We suppose that surface PS-b-PAA reaches 0. 92% at the stage of monolayer coverage and that surface carboxyl reacts with PS-b-PAA according to the equation CaCO3 + [-C-CCOO-] n- Ca[-OOCC-C-]n + CO32-. Initially, PS-b-PAA chains bond vertically to the calcite surface with PAA block down when PS-b-PAA concentration in the solution is low. With the increase of PS-b-PAA concentration, PS block forms islandlike micelles and gradually the formerly bonded together with the newly bonded PS-b-PAA will change their shape and wrap around the particle surface.

Abstract:Methyl methacrylate (MMA) emulsion polymerization in the presence of nanometer calcium carbonate (nano-CaCO3) surface modified with γ-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS) was carried out to prepare poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/nano-CaCO3 composite. The reaction between nano-CaCO3 and MPTMS, and the grafting of PMMA onto nano-CaCO3 were confirmed by infrared spectrum. The grafting ratio and grafting efficiency of PMMA on nano-CaCO3 modified with MPTMS were much higher than that on nano-CaCO3 modified with stearic acid. The grafting ratio of PMMA increased as the weight ratio between MMA and nano-CaCO3 increased, while the grafting efficiency of PMMA decreased. Transmission electron micrograph showed that nano-CaCO3 covered with PMMA was formed by in-situ emulsion polymerization.

Abstract:4,4'-azobis (4-cyanopentanoic acid) (ACPA) initiator chelated onto the surface of nanometer calcium carbonate was used to initiate the polymerization of methyl methacrylate in water. The kinetics of polymerization and grafting of PMMA on the surface of nano-CaCO 3 were investigated. The results of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed that the decomposition temperature of ACPA decreased when it was chelated onto the particles. The polymerization rate of methyl methacrylate (MMA) decreased when CaCO 3 particles was added, while it increased as the initiator concentration and polymerization temperature increased. The grafting efficiency of PMMA decreased as the conversion increased. The agglomerates of nanometer calcium carbonate particles were separated into small ones during polymerizing process and the size of aggregates covered with poly(methyl methacrylate) decreased as polymerization proceeded.

Abstract:Nano-sized calcium carbonate, as a multifunctional material, is widely used in various industrial fields. The morphology, particle size, surface property of CaCO3 particles have great impact on the application effect. This study presents an energy-saving and efficient approach to controllably prepare CaCO3 nanoparticles and conduct surface modification simultaneously. Ca(OH)(2)/CO2 carbonation method was adopted to prepare CaCO3 nanoparticles using a membrane dispersion microreactor in the presence of calcium stearate (CaSt(2)) surfactant. The effects of gas and liquid flow rates, temperature and the dosage of surfactant were systematically investigated. The effect of surface modification was evaluated by contact angle and active ratio. The as-prepared hydrophobic CaCO3 nanoparticles were of good dispersity, with an average particle size of 34 nm, a specific surface area of above 30 m(2)/g and a contact angle of 107.8 degrees. In this work, the effect of surfactant on the carbonation reaction was greatly diminished by adding CaSt(2) surfactant to a portion of Ca(OH)(2) slurry. Additionally, the modification process was carried out without organic solvents and high temperature. As compared to post-modification method, the in-situ modification process is of significant practical importance because of high production efficiency, excellent process stability, and high product quality. Multi-scale Structure of In-Situ Polymerized Cementitious Composites with Improved Flowability, Strength, Deformability and Anti-Permeability

Abstract:In-situ polymerization of polymers with cement can greatly improve the engineering performances of cementitious composites, the structural mechanisms, however, remain still not fully established. Herein in-situ polymerization modified cementitious composites (iPMCC) with sodium acrylate (SA) in different dosages (0%, 4% and 8%) were fabricated. Flowability, strength, deformability, and water sorptivity of the iPMCCs were tested, and the multi-scale structures in terms of pore size distribution, microscopic morphology, chemical characteristics, and solid structure of calcium-silicate (-aluminate)-hydrates were characterized. Results demonstrate that, compared with neat cement paste, the iPMCC with 4% SA showed the improvement of flowability by 35.1%, the increases of flexural and compressive strength by 109.0% and 11.8%, the rises of flexural and compressive deformation energy by 458.8% and 161.0%, and the decrease of water sorptivity by 19.1%. The in-situ SA polymerizations lead to substantial pore refinement, but macro defects in the iPMCC with 8% SA. Cross-linked sodium polyacrylate networks formed in the cement matrix and interacted with the cement hydrates, accounting for the improved strength, deformability, and water resistance. Cement hydration depression by polymers was evidently supported by the NMR data. The findings would deepen the understandings of multi-scale structure of cementitious composites with polymers, enabling development of highly ductile and durable construction materials.
Preparation of Poly(methyl Methacrylate)/ultrafine CaCO3 Composite Particles by In-Situ Dispersion Polymerization

Abstract:In order to improve the grafting and coating of polymer on ultrafine CaCO3 particles, the anchoring of 4,4’-azobis(4-cyanopentanoic acid) (ACPA) onto ultrafine CaCO3, and dispersion polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in the presence of CaCO3 anchored with azo initiator were investigated. CaCO3 was treated with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane at first, followed by the condensation reaction with the hydroxy group of ACPA. The coupling and anchoring reactions are confirmed by infrared spectrum and element analysis. The rate of MMA dispersion polymerization increases with the amount of ACPA anchored on CaCO3, but the initiation efficiency of anchored ACPA is lower than that of free ACPA in polymerization. The grafting of PMMA on CaCO3 is also confirmed by infrared spectrum. It shows that the grafting ratio of PMMA increases with the polymerization conversion, while the grafting efficiency of PMMA decreases. The amount of anchored ACPA has no significant influence on the grafting efficiency of PMMA. PMMA/CaCO3 composite particles with higher PMMA grafting degree could be prepared by in-situ dispersion polymerization initiated by ACPA anchored on CaCO3. The dispersion stability of CaCO3 grafted with PMMA in MMA and tetrahydrofuran is significantly improved in comparison with that of unmodified CaCO3.
Encapsulation of Carboxyl Polymer on the Surface of Nanometer Calcium Carbonate

Abstract:Nanometer calcium carbonate has important applications in the field of polymer modification.However,its hydrophilic nature leads to poor compatibility with polymer,for which,surface modification is often necessary.In this study,nanometer calcium carbonate was encapsulated with carboxyl styrene-butadiene rubber latex or carboxyl terminated polybutadiene by direct mixing with the dilution of polymer.Obtained particles were characterized by Soxhlet extraction,FT-IR,TEM and sedimentation experiment.The results show that the encapsulation of either polymer on the surface of nanometer calcium carbonate was successfully achieved.Optimum loading amount of polymer is 13%,corresponding to encapsulation ratio of 11% and 6.8%,and encapsulation efficiency of 85% and 52%,respectively.After the encapsulation,the shape of nanometer calcium carbonate particles changes from polyhedral to approximately round.Surface character of particles becomes from hydrophilic to hydrophobic,and the dispersibility of particles in hydrophobic solvent gets improved.

Abstract:Calcium carbonate, which is widely employed as a filler added into the polymer matrix, has large numbers of applications owing to the excellent properties such as low cost, non-toxicity, high natural reserves and biocompatibility. Nevertheless, in order to obtain the good filling effect, calcium carbonate needs to be surface modified by organic molecules so as to enhance the dispersion and compatibility within the composites. This review paper systematically introduces the theory, methods, and applications progress of calcium carbonate with surface modification. Additionally, the key factors that affect the properties of the composites as well as the current difficulties and challenges are highlighted. The current research progress and potential application prospects of calcium carbonate in the fields of plastics, rubber, paper, medicine and environmental protection are discussed as well. Generally, this review can provide valuable reference for the modification and comprehensive utilization of calcium carbonate.

In Situ Preparation of Hydrophobic CaCO3 Nanoparticles in a Gas–liquid Microdispersion Process

Abstract:This study presents a novel process of in situ surface modification of CaCO3 nanoparticles using a multiple-orifice dispersion microreactor. CO2/Ca(OH)2 precipitation reaction was employed to prepare CaCO3 nanoparticles with sodium stearate surfactant. Synthesized CaCO3 products were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), infra-red (IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Brunauer–Emmet–Teller analysis (BET). The effect of various operation parameters on nanoparticles and the dosage of sodium stearate were determined. The results showed that the preparation process could be precisely controlled with efficient mass transfer process. The particles were highly hydrophobic with a contact angle of 117° and monodisperse with an average size of 30nm. The adsorptions of sodium stearate and calcium ion on solid particles during the in situ surface modification process were investigated.

Abstract:Si3N4 powder was coated by polymer through ultrasonic-assisted emulsion polymerization. The-influencing factors of conversion of monomer were analyzed by TGA. The extent of surface coating was studied by particle size analysis and XPS surface analysis. The powders, which are well-dispersed and good compatible with organic binder, are expected to acquire through surface polymerization. Abstract:The nano-CaCO3 was dispersed into vinyl acelate(VAc),then the VAc solution was polymerized and the nano-CaCO3/PVAc composite material was obtained eventualy.The optimum dispersion conditions of nano-CaCO3 in VAc and optimum conditions for the polymerization of VAc were studied.The FT-IR and TEM were used to characterized the structure of nano-CaCO3/PVAc composite material.The break strength and rupture elongation of composite material were tested.The result show that there exist chemical bends between CaCO3 and PVAc.The CaCO3 particles were dispersed in PVAc in nano scale.The Nano-CaCO3/PVAc composite material shows best performance when the mass fraction of nano-CaCO3 in PVAc is 0.2%~0.3%.

Abstract:Nano-calcium carbonate was modified with composite modifier by carbonization method.Activation index,oil absorption value and average particle size of nano-CaCO3 prepared were measured,and its physical properties were confirmed by means of TGA,IR and TEM etc.The optimum modification conditions were attained: 1.5%(mass fraction) composite modifier,consisting of lauric acid and glyceryl di-caprylate polyoxyethylene ether with ratio of 1:1.Results showed that the activation index of modified nano-CaCO3 prepared through this technique was 100%,the oil absorption value was 31.5,and the average particle size was 70nm.The hydrophobicity of modified nano-CaCO3 was strong.

Abstract:CaCO3 nano-particles transferred from water phase into ethanol were treated by methacrylic acid to form reactive interface by ionic bonding. Well dispersed CaCO3 nano-particles in styrene obtained from the filtermass of treated CaCO3 nano-particles with solids content more than 80% at a temperature slightly higher than 100℃ were polymerized via in-situ bulk polymerization to produce nano-CaCO3/polystyrene composite. TEM images show that CaCO3 nano-particles with the sizes less than 100 nm were distributed homogeneously in polymer matrix. CaCO3 nano-particles can play a positive role to increase the toughness of composite material matrix, and the toughness of the composite with 7%～8% CaCO3 nano-particles can be improved up to 258% of pure polystyrene. The structure model of pool dispersion was proposed and used to explain the relationship between toughness and structure of the composite.

Abstract:Nano‐CaCO3 is a potential nanomaterial at present. In this paper, the preparation process (physical and chemical methods), modification methods (physical and chemical modification), and application fields (chemical, energy, food, biomedicine, and environment industries) of nano‐CaCO3 are introduced and discussed. This provides theoretical guidance for people who understand the field. Nano‐calcium carbonate (nano‐CaCO3) is a tiny inorganic filler created in the 1980s. It boasts a high specific surface area, excellent biocompatibility, and nontoxicity. As a result, it finds extensive applications in the rubber, plastic, and paper industries. This paper intends to give a general overview of the preparation process, surface modification, and application of nano‐CaCO3. In particular, the preparation process conditions, the characteristics of the prepared nano‐CaCO3, the method and mechanism of surface modification, and also the main application research progress of nano‐CaCO3 are described comprehensively. This paper has a good guiding effect for the researchers and related staff engaged in the study of nano‐CaCO3.

Abstract:The microstructure,thermal properties,and molecule weight and its distribution of PMMA coated on the surface CaCO_3 nanoparticles by in-situ emulsion polymerization were studied by FTIR,(()~1H-NMR),TG and GPC.The results indicate that the main tacticity of PMMA which coated on the surface of CaCO_3 nanoparticles is syndiotactic(rr),and its content is about(52.8%).The thermal decomposition(temperature) of coated PMMA is between that of PMMA prepared by emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization and PMMA by emulsion polymerization with emulsifier,and is higher about 50 °C than that by emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization.The molecular weight of coated PMMA is higher than that of PMMA(homopolymerized),and its polydispersity is wider than that of PMMA homopolymerized.The presence of CaCO_3 nanoparticles affects only on the thermal properties and its molecular weight distribution but not on the microstructure of PMMA.
