Abstract:The demands of next-generation transportation such as electric and hybrid vehicles as well as computing and renewable energy applications require new alloys with high castability, high electrical and thermal conductivity, and moderate strength. Aluminum and Mg alloys offer respectable electrical and thermal conductivity with high specific properties unlike Cu and precious metals. However, traditional light alloy systems rely on significant alloying content for solid solution strengthening and to generate short freezing ranges for high castability that is associated with a large decrease to electrical and thermal conductivity. Aluminum alloys based on transition metal and rare earth additions (Fe, Ni, Co and Ce) as well as Mg alloys with additions of Zn, Ca and Ce are potential highly castable alloys with high electrical and thermal conductivity. These new conductive light alloys rely on alloy additions that have low solid solubility but provide short freezing ranges. Results indicate that these Al and Mg alloys can have electrical conductivities ~ 80% of their pure counterparts and castability similar to traditional cast Al–Si and Mg–Al alloys.
