Abstract:In this study, we report the preparation and electrochemical evaluation of LiFePO4-carbon nanocomposites with carbon aerogels of varied pore size and distribution. In these composites, LiFePO4 nanoparticles smaller than 50nm are confined to a three-dimensional (3D) microporous network that functions as the electronic and ionic conductor. The pore size of carbon aerogel is adjusted to achieve smaller LiFePO4 nanoparticles. The KOH activation treatment of carbon aerogels is used to increase micropores that act as electrolyte reservoirs and is beneficial for ionic conductivity. Additional carbon coating of LiFePO4 particles using glucose further enhances the electrode performance. The resultant composite electrodes exhibit superior rate performance and good cyclic stability due to the optimized nanostructure. The nanocomposites of LiFePO4 and carbon areogels provide good examples of material nano-engineering owing to their tunable nanostructures.

Abstract:Silica aerogels are the lightest materials with a typical interconnected nanostructure. They have received much attention due to their extraordinary properties and their potential applications in many fields. Conventionally silica aerogels have been made by supercritical drying process which is complicated, expensive and unsafe to a certain extent. In order to promote the production of silica aerogels on a large scale and for commercial applications, it is urgently necessary to probe the preparing technique of silica aerogels via ambient pressure drying at a reasonable cost. In recent years, significant developments in the ambient pressure drying technique have been achieved. This article gives an overview of the recent research progresses in preparation methods of silica aerogels via ambient pressure drying technique and the most updated information in preparation of silica aerogel composite materials. Silica aerogel composite materials reinforced by fiber and polymer improve the mechanical properties and further widen the application areas of silica aerogels.

Abstract:Dispersion of graphite in water was achieved using clay as dispersing aid. In the absence of polymer, the clay/graphite suspensions were sufficiently stable to produce aerogels composed of very thin layers of uniformly dispersed nanoparticles. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVOH) aerogels containing binary nanofillers (clay plus graphite) were then fabricated and tested. These composites were found to maintain low thermal and electrical conductivities even with high loading of graphite. A unique compressive stress-strain behavior was observed for the aerogel, exhibiting a plateau in the densification region, likely due to sliding between clay and graphite layers within the PVOH matrix. The aerogels containing only graphite exhibited higher compressive modulus, yield stress and toughness values than the samples filled with binary nanofillers. X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra for the same composite aerogel before and after compression testing illustrated the compression-induced dispersion changes of nanofillers. Composites containing 50 wt % graphite demonstrated a downshift of its 2D Raman peak implying graphite exfoliation to graphene with less than 5 layers.

Abstract:Fe2O3/Al composite energetic material was prepared by sol-gel method and supercritical fluid drying.Its structure was investigated by means of SEM,XRD and BET.The experimental results showed the structure of Fe2O3/Al composite energetic material was significant fiber network.The average particle size of Al in Fe2O3/Al composite energetic material was 40nm.The specific surface area of Fe2O3/Al composite energetic material was 147.9m2/g,and much smaller than blank Fe2O3 aerogel.Its average pore size was 8nm and the distribution of pore size was more uniform.

Abstract:Al2O3-SiO2 sols were synthesized by using aluminum chloride hex hydrate and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) as precursors, deionized water and ethanol mixture as the solvent, and propylene oxide as the coagulant aids. Alumina coatings were prepared on the surfaces of hollow quartz filament fiber, then a new lightweight and thermal insulating material were successfully prepared by impregnating Al2O3-SiO2 sol into a needle fabric made by coated hollow quartz filament fiber. The coated quartz fiber, aerogels and composites were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR), X-ray diffraction(XRD), energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS), nitrogen adsorption-desorption(BET), scanning electron microscopy(SEM), transmission electron microscopy(TEM), and tensile tests. The effects of different fiber and calcination temperatures on the microstructures and properties of Al2O3-SiO2 composite aerogels were investigated. The test results indicate that the mechanical properties of the aerogels are improved by introducing quartz filament fabrics and the introduction of alumina coating improves the thermal stability of the material. Compared to other fibers, Al2O3-coated hollow quartz fiber has significant advantages as reinforcement for composite, and their tensile strength is well retained after high temperature heat treatment.

Abstract:Hierarchical structural composites were prepared by combining Al2O3–SiO2 aerogel with alumina frameworks. The alumina framework, which acted as matrix, was composed of interlocked hexagonal alumina platelets. The Al2O3–SiO2 aerogel was led into the matrix by vacuum impregnation method. The results of this research demonstrated that the introduction of Al2O3–SiO2 aerogel resulted in an increase of the specific surface area and of the compression strength. The volume density, apparent porosity, specific surface area and compression strength of the Al2O3–SiO2 aerogel/alumina framework composite were 1.29 g/cm3, 63.1%, 57.8 m2/g and ~21 MPa, respectively. The hierarchical porous structure and properties of the proposed composite material demonstrate its suitability for catalyst supporting applications at high reaction temperatures.

Abstract:A magnetic porous aerogel composite was preparedvia a sol–gel method and in–situ synthesis of Ni/Cu ferrite spinel. The microstructure, magnetism and adsorption ability were characterized. The results show that the organic molecular chain of glycollic acid in precursor is combined with inorganic phase to form the skeleton and the doublely-connected pore structure, the porosity of as–synthesized composite aerogels is 73.22%, and the bulk density is 0.36 g/cm3, with an average grading of 16 μm; the magnetic nanoparticles distribute uniformly in the SiO2 matrix. The specific surface area of samples decreases and the saturation magnetization increases with the increase of the calcination temperature. The composite as-prepared presents a maximum capacity of 100.67 mg/g, can adsorb Ce(IV) from aqueous solution at a superior performance of recycle ability , and can be separated by a magnetic field.

Abstract:In order to improve the thermal insulation and mechanical property of silica (SiO2) aerogels, the graphene oxide (GO), as nanofillers, was added into SiO2 matrix to prepare the SiO2/GO composite aerogel monoliths on the basis of sol-gel technology and submitted to supercritical drying. The results showed that the monoliths were maintained and GO was well-distributed in the aerogel, due to the interfacial interaction between GO nanosheets and SiO2 matrix. The thermal insulation property of composite aerogels was improved in contrast with that of pure aerogel. The experimental results suggested that the thermal conductivity was lowered from 0.0089 W/mK to 0.0072 W/mK. A possible mechanism was analyzed to explain this result in virtue of GO loadings. The mechanical strength of aerogels was enhanced. It was found that with the loading of GO from 0.0 wt% to 5.0 wt%, the compressive modulus was enhanced from 0.238 MPa to 0.394 MPa, which was a significant improvement for low-solid-content silica aerogels. Moreover, the composite aerogels exhibited some toughness compared to the fragility of pure aerogel.

Abstract:Aerogels are three-dimensional nanoporous materials with outstanding properties, especially great thermal insulation. Nevertheless, their extremely high brittleness restricts their practical application. Recently, although the mechanical properties of silica aerogels have been improved by regulating the precursor or introducing a polymer reinforcer, these preparation processes are usually tedious and time-consuming. The purpose of this study was to simplify the preparation process of these composite aerogels. A silicic acid solution treated with cation exchange resin was mixed with agarose (AG) to gel in situ, and then composite aerogels (CAs) with an interpenetrating network (IPN) structure were obtained by aging and supercritical CO2 fluid (SCF) drying. Compared to previous works, the presented CAs preparation process is briefer and more environmentally friendly. Moreover, the CAs exhibit a high specific surface area (420.5 m2/g), low thermal conductivity (28.9 mW m−1 K−1), excellent thermal insulation properties, and thermal stability. These results show that these CAs can be better used in thermal insulation.

Abstract:Silica aerogels with high porosity, low density, and unusual three-dimensional network space structure are interesting for various applications. However, there are easily collapsed structures and poor mechanical qualities, which present a great obstacle to their practical applications. Herein, we reported a universal strategy to realize by combining wet-laid glass fiber felt (80 % glass fiber and 20 % hot melt fiber) with silica aerogel to assemble micro-nanopore structures. The results demonstrated that, compared to glass fiber felt (GF), the silica aerogel/glass fiber/hot melt fiber composites (SGMs) increased 0.33 MPa in tensile strength, and sound transmission loss (STL) could be improved by more than 10 dB when the frequency was above 2000 Hz. Besides, SGMs had good thermal stability (375 °C) and excellent thermal insulation with the optimal thermal conductivity coefficient 0.038 W (m k) -1 . It can be widely used in the field of sound insulation and thermal insulation.

Abstract:The synthesis and characterization of carbon foam supported silica aerogel (SiO2/Carbon foam) and silicon carbide composite (SiC/Carbon foam) are presented in this study. The phase composition, microstructure, thermal and mechanical properties are investigated by XRD, SEM, LFA Laser Flashmeasurements, and Universal Material Testing.The resulting SiO2/Carbon foam composite shows a higher compressive strength (14.95 MPa) and a smaller thermal conductivity (0.44 W .m(-1).K-1) at room temperature, in comparison with the pristine carbon foam. The SiC/Carbon foam composite maintains a compressive strength of 14.66 MPa, and possesses a low high-temperature thermal conductivity (2.18 W.m(-1).K-1 at 1 200 degrees C). Mass loss does not begin until 610 degrees C for the SiC/Carbon foam composite, and complete carbon combustion does not occur until 844 degrees C, indicating a much better thermal stability than the pristine carbon foam in oxidizing atmosphere.

Abstract:Magnetic Fe3O4/graphene/carbon aerogels were prepared by the sol-gel method, followed by supercritical drying and pyrolysis. The microstructures, electrical properties and electromagnetic interference shielding performance of the aerogels were investigated. The aerogels were crushed into a fine powder with a bimodal particle size distribution (~0.1 and 10μm) and released into a chamber to a particle concentration of 1 gm-3 atroom temperature under atmosphere pressure using a dispensing device, where electromagnetic interference shieldingwas tested. Results indicate that the composite aerogels have high conductivity and a hierarchical pore structure with a density as low as 0.015 g cm-3. The concentration of the fine powder in the chamber decreased with time and levelled off above 20 min. The shielding is dominated by the particles that are difficult to settle due to their perturbation by air. The shielding for the visible wave band of the composite aerogels in powder form initially and after the release for 30 min are above 99.90% and 98.77%, respectively. Those for 3-5 μm and 8-12 μm infrared light are respectively 99.55% and 99.35% initially, and 99.05% and 96.79% after the release for 30 min. For the millimeter wave band, the shielding ratios initially and after the release for 30 min are above 83.68% and 82.54%, respectively.

Abstract:Aerogels, as a new type of high-temperature-resistant insulation material, find extensive application in aerospace, high-temperature industrial furnaces, new energy batteries, and various other domains, yet still face some limitations such as inadequate temperature resistance and pronounced brittleness. In this work, SiC/HfC composite aerogels were prepared through a combination of sol-gel method, atmospheric pressure drying technique, and carbothermal reduction reaction. The effects of different molar ratios, calcination time, and temperatures on the microstructural features and physicochemical properties of the resulting SiC/HfC composite aerogels were investigated. The aerogel exhibited an elevated BET-specific surface area of 279.75 m2/g, while the sample displayed an extraordinarily low thermal conductivity of 0.052 W/(m·K). Most notably, the compressive strength reached an outstanding 5.93 MPa after a carbonization temperature of 1500 °C, far exceeding the values reported in prior aerogel studies. This research provided an innovative approach for advancing the development of carbide aerogels in the realm of high-temperature applications.

Abstract:Ultrasound‐assisted freeze‐drying strategy to enhance nanoparticle dispersion in aerogels. Thermal protection materials should possess light weight, excellent thermal insulation, flame retardant and hydrophobic properties. Aerogel are considered a promising thermal protection material due to its high porosity and low density. Among them, nano‐silica/polyimide composite aerogel has been intensively studied as they can solve the problem of fragility of nano‐silica aerogel while ensuring thermal insulation and flame retardant performance. However, the problems of nanoparticle agglomeration and the tedious preparation process remain unsolved. The ultrasound‐assisted freeze‐drying (UAFD) strategy presented in this paper avoids the tedious silica solution preparation process by hydrolyzing silica precursors to achieve good dispersion of silica. This strategy replaces the traditional approach of functionalized modification of silica nanoparticles to inhibit their agglomeration with a new method of nanoparticle dispersion by ultrasound and rapid freezing to lock the dispersed state. The UAFD strategy enables the rapid and efficient preparation of well‐dispersed nano‐silica/polyimide composite aerogels, and the hierarchical pore structure of the composite aerogels is imparted by this facile preparation strategy that cooperates with the co‐regulation capability of the tert‐butanol on the morphology of the ice template. The aerogels have substantially improved thermal insulation, flame retardant, and hydrophobic properties when compared with those prepared by conventional freeze‐drying methods. Highlights Ultrasound‐assisted freeze‐drying (UAFD) enhances nanoparticles dispersion. UAFD and tert‐butanol synergistically prepared hierarchically pore structure. Thermal protection performance of aerogels prepared by UAFD is improved.

Preparation of superhydrophobic and flexible polysiloxane aerogel

Abstract:Silica aerogels, which consist of nano-particles and abundant nano-pores, have many outstanding properties. However, poor mechanical performances dramatically limit the practical applications of aerogel. Herein, we reported the preparation of novel superhydrophobic and flexible silica aerogel with several kinds of polysiloxane. The aerogel was formed with the polysiloxane and multimethoxy-POSS, the POSS was efficiently synthesized by thio-ene reaction and used as a crosslinking agent to strengthen the structure. The obtained data revealed all aerogels had the mesoporous structure (19–27 nm), high specific surface area (476.3–632.9 m2 g−1) and fine heat resistance. The different ratio of side groups on polysiloxane and the content of POSS led to the different mechanical properties, the ultimate compression strain was up to 50%. Moreover, the further oil-water separation application has also been demonstrated.

Abstract:Carbon aerogels and their precursory polymer aerogels are an important class of porous materials, because they have a unique three-dimensional interconnected nanonetwork structure that can minimize diffusive resistance to mass transport. However, production of conventional aerogels in a monolithic form remains problematic, because of risk of explosive polymerization, tedious supercritical/freeze drying steps, extra ball milling, and difficulty in controlling micro/nanostructures. Here we show that novel powdery carbon aerogels and their polymer aerogel precursors have been developed by utilizing shape-persistent nanoparticles as building blocks, followed by hypercrosslinking for forming a well-defined 3D interconnected nanonetwork with numerous interstitial nanopores and intraparticle micropores. The resulting aerogels are in a microscale powdery form. The preparation route is much more feasible for scaling up, due to avoidance of explosive polymerization and facile drying at ambient pressure. By simple carbonization, powdery carbon aerogels can be obtained with a high surface area of 2052m2 g−1. Benefiting from structural advantages, the aerogels demonstrate excellent electrochemical performances in supercapacitors and lithium-sulfur batteries.

Abstract:Chitosan, a semi-crystalline biomolecule, has attracted wide attention due to its high synthesis flexibility. In this study, to improve the mechanical properties of chitosan aerogels (CSAs), graphene oxide (GO) was extracted and introduced into chitosan aerogels as fillers. The porous CSAs/GO composite aerogels were fabricated by an environmentally friendly freeze-drying process with different GO contents (0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, wt.%). The characteristics of the CSAs/GO were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), mechanical measurements and mercury porosimeter. The crystallinity of samples was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The mechanism of the effect of graphene oxide on chitosan was studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results show that the microstructure of the samples is developed in the network structure. The porosity of CSAs/GO aerogels is as high as 87.6%, and the tensile strength of the films increased from 6.60 MPa to 10.56 MPa with the recombination of graphene oxide. The crystallinity (CrI) of composite aerogels increased from 27% to 81%, which indicates that graphene oxide improves the mechanical properties of chitosan by chemical crosslinking.

Abstract:Carbon/alumina (C/Al2O3) composite aerogel with high compressive strength and low thermal conductivity has been successfully synthesized by sol–gel method, followed by CO2 supercritical drying and carbonization. SEM images and compressive Young’s modulus measurements show that the C/Al2O3 aerogel with a molar ratio of Resorcinol/Alumina (R/Al) of 1.0 presents homogeneous pore structures and obtains excellent compressive Young’s modulus up to 90 MPa. Three weight losses regions are observed during heat treatment process, confirmed by TG/DSC measurements. XRD patterns and TEM images indicate that α-Al2O3 phase transition occurs only when heat treatment temperature reaches up to 1500 °C with the adding of carbon source, 200 °C higher than pure Al2O3 aerogel. The as-dried RF/Al2O3 aerogel possesses thermal conductivity as low as 0.025 W m−1 K−1. The thermal conductivities of C/Al2O3 aerogels increase gradually with the increase of heat treatment temperatures, caused by increasing solid thermal conductivity. The thermal conductivities range from 0.033 to 0.049 W m−1 K−1, suitable for efficient thermal insulations uses.
