Abstract:To quantitatively analyze the main reasons of common crack in the surface of alloy steel ingot with 5%Cr during production and to propose the direction of improvement, a physical model system, which consisted of steel ingot mold, casting, riser of heat insulation, slag layer, sprue pipe, and runner, was primarily established by three-dimensional CAD software. The joint simulation method concerned with pouring, solidification, temperature field, and cast stress was determined by using ADSTEFAN cast simulation software. The stress distribution of casting and the quantitative effect of shake-out timing were analyzed in detail. An effective plan of decreasing stress was proposed in cooling mode.

Abstract:The cause and influencing factors of transverse corner cracks which occur during the continuous casting process of microalloyed steel as well as the solutions are discussed.First,this paper introduces the formation of transverse corner cracks which originate in the mould and spread in the secondary cooling area.The analysis is made on the effects of factors such as the stress during continuous casting,hot ductility,taper of mould,secondary cooling pattern and etc on the transverse corner cracks of microalloyed slabs,and several existing solutions are summarized.The mechanism of embrittlement of CC microalloyed steel and the influences of microstructure and microalloy elements on the hot ductility of CC slabs are the focus of introduction.Finally,this paper looks forward to the prospect of new solutions to transverse corner cracks in CC slabs.
Experimental studies of the bearing capability of a type of steel-concrete composite slab

Abstract:A kind of steel-concrete composite slab is proposed. Forty-three specimens of this kind of slab with different parameters are studied. Their behaviors during construction and use are analyzed, including the load-defection relationship, the strain distribution and crack development, etc.. The test results show that in the construction period, the steel form has good stability with small strain and deflection, and that in the use period, the composite slab has a similar property to that of RC element under bending, but it has higher load resistance and better ductility. The complete load-deflection curve for the composite slab is also analyzed by using a numeric method. The theoretic calculation results are identical with the test results.

Abstract:To investigate the causes of cracks in wet joints of continuous concrete box girders, we performed in situ analysis of the temperature and strain field of wet-joint concrete for a sea-crossing bridge under construction in China after casting. We developed a numerical model to compare with the field tests. The numerical results agree well with those measured in the field. Thermal stress due to the heat of hydration in concrete is the main factor causing cracks, followed by concrete shrinkage. Furthermore, we investigated some measures to minimize and control the occurrence of cracks, such as optimizing the concrete mix ratio and lowering the casting temperature of wet concrete.

Abstract:In the current article, a method based on analysis of the microstructure combined with numerical simulation of the temperature field of a continuous casting slab is proposed to eliminate the transverse cracks occurred in slab corners. The microstructures near the cracks will be varied as the phase‐transformation conditions change. Thus, the cracking temperature range can be effectively estimated by analyzing the microstructures near the cracks. The different behaviors of microstructures near cracks in three conditions are presented and discussed. These behaviors include the following: the decarburization layer is symmetrically distributed on both sides of the cracks; the microstructures are refined near the cracks; the cracks “open” the ferrite along the austenite grain boundaries, which results in the ferrite being symmetrically distributed on both sides of the cracks. The variation of the slab corner temperature during a continuous casting process is calculated and discussed. Then, a secondary cooling adjustment scheme is proposed to eliminate the occurrence of transverse corner cracks on the slab surface. Results from industrial practice show that the method can effectively avoid the generation of slab surface cracks without damage to the internal quality of the slab. The method can also be applied to other studies of crack control.

Abstract:Taking the AH36 steel as the research object,the cooling system of the continuous casting billet and the tensile test specimen were simulated by Gleeble-3800 thermal simulation machine.The fracture microstructure was characterized by means of metallographic microscope.The hot ductility of the specimen under different cooling conditions was studied.The effect of cooling process on the transverse cracks of casting billet was cleared.The results show that the reduction of area of the sample using traditional cooling process is less than 40％ at 800 ℃,with brittle featured fracture its thermoplastic and anti crack sensitivity are low,which is due to ferrite and pearlite uneven distribution and chainlike distribution coarse grain precipitates along the grain boundaries.Under the condition of thermal cycling cooling process,the reduction of area of the sample is 53.30％ at 800℃ and the microstructure is uniform with fine grain,and no chain-like precipitates.Thermal cycling cooling system can effectively improve the the surface hot ductility of continuous casting billet,reduce crack sensitivity,and eliminate the corner cracks.

Abstract:This paper studies the chemical composition,tensile properties,inclusions,metallogrophic structure,and other such parameters to identify the causes of cracking during the bending of high-strength steel. The results show that the major causes of cracking are the original transverse cracks or holes on the surface of the slab and the presence of scales rolled into the cracks or holes. Cold fracturing from such defects is rare,and can be eleminated by enhancing the control of the steelmaking process and by mechanical clean-up of the surface cracks and holes in the slab.

Abstract:The internal cracks in continuously cast slabs are attributed to the excessive tensile strain occurring at the solidifying front during the continuous casting process. Based on the understanding, a model for diagnosing the formation of the internal cracks was established, in which the strains at the solidifying front caused by bulging, straightening or unbending, and roll misalignment were calculated and compared with a critical strain value to estimate whether the internal cracks form. Moreover, the established model was applied to a real slab easter to reveal the distribution of the strains in casting direction and its effect on the internal cracks. It was proved that the model was reliable and useful for optimizing the operation of continuous casting.

Abstract:The formation of internal cracks in continuously cast slabs is mainly attributed to the strain status and microsegregation near the solidifying front of the slabs. Based on this understanding, the effects of the strain status at solidifying front and the chemical composition of liquid steel on the internal cracks were studied using a strain analysis model and a microsegregation model developed in the present study. The tensilestrains at the solidifying front caused by bulging, unbending, and misalignment of supporting rolls in a four-point-unbending bow caster were calculated. The roll gap in the caster was measured for the calculation of the strains caused by the misalignment of the supporting rolls. The calculated strain status near the solidifying front was used to predict the internal cracks. Critical strains based on some experimental data were adopted as the crack criteria. Sulfur prints of the slab transverse sections were used to verify the model predictions. The enrichment of chemical compositions in the interdendritic liquid and its effect on the freezing temperature of the liquid were studied with the microsegregation model, in which the transition of ferritic/austenitic solidification and the precipitation of MnS were taken into account. S and P were revealed to strongly accumulate at the columnar grain boundaries, and the segregation of P increases significantly when C content increases from 0.1% to 0.2%. With the accumulation of P and S in the interdendritic liquid, the freezing temperature of the liquid decreases obviously, thus the internal crack tendency is greatly increased.

Abstract:To the problem of longitudinal edge cracks on plate surface,the cracks formation mechanism is studied.The effects of heating process,work roll diameter and roll speed matching on edge deformation uniformity of top and bottom surfaces of the plate during rolling process were analyzed.The results show that the deformation uniformity of top and bottom surfaces of the plate is improved by adjusting heating process and work roll speed.The cracks are away from the plate edge within 30mm so that the cracks can be removed after shearing.As a result,the pass rate of plate is higher than 90%.

Abstract:Fe–25Mn–3Si–3Al steels obtained much attention because of their excellent mechanical properties. However, the fracture behavior of the steels remains unclear. In this study, Fe–25Mn–3Si–3Al steels were ex situ tensile strained and tested by a transmission electron microscope to investigate the relationship between crack and twins. The propagation of crack was examined and related to the dislocation slip and twinning. Cracks initiate related to the moving of dislocations and propagate along the slip bands. Twins parallel and inclined to the crack are produced during crack propagating. The inclined twins notably block and blunt the crack, whereas the parallel twins exhibit an insignificant effect.

Abstract:This paper investigated the cracking behaviour and flexural capacity of beams under simultaneous sustained loading and steel corrosion. Chloride ions were electro-migrated into the concrete beams, and then DC current, coupled with wetting and drying cycles, was applied to accelerate the steel corrosion. During the steel corrosion, the beams were subjected to sustained loading at different levels. The cracking maps were drawn and crack width was measured periodically. The flexural capacity and the steel corrosion degree were measured after seven wetting and drying cycles. The results show that simultaneous loading and corrosion lead to more severe and faster cracking damage on the beams and reduce the beams' ductilities. The corrosion of the tension reinforcement occurs more slowly than that of the stirrups, while the tension-reinforcement corrosion at the areas connecting with the stirrups is slighter than the corrosion at the other parts of the tension reinforcement. Abstract:Based on the corner transversal cracks in slab continuous casting , the finite element models of two-dimensional transient thermo-mechanical coupled between mould and slab were set up .The solidification shrink-age behavior of slab in the mould with different chamfers and tapers of the narrow face copper was discussed , and the temperature and stress distribution of slabs were calculated .The effect of mould fluxes and air gap on heat transfer was taken into account comprehensively in the models .The numerical results show when the chamfer of mould narrow face copper is too large or too small , it is disadvantage for the uniform distribution of the slab temperature .For the slab of 230mm thickness, the chamfer 20mm~25mm ×45°and the parabolic taper of the narrow copper plate make the slab surface temperature distribution most uniform and the maximum plane principal stress distribution more rea -sonable , so that the corner transverse cracks will be greatly reduced .

Abstract:In order to study the surface quality of the edge-cracking steel sheet and find out the root causes of defects,microscope,scanning electron microscopy,energy dispersive spectroscopy and other related test equipments were employed.The results showed that there were four fundamental casues of steel edge cracking: inclusions,severe decarburization at the steel edge,uneven cooling along transverse direction and accumulation of blowholes.In response to the above-mentioned causes,improvement measures such as optimization of steelmaking process,continuous casting,heating scheme and transverse cooling process at rolling section were taken to decrease the slab defect rate due to edge cracking from 30% to 5.1%,resulting in reduction of side trimming.The results provide helpful reference to production practice and quality disputes resolution.

Abstract:This paper presents the results of a study on the cracking behaviour of cast in situ reinforced concrete slabs with control joints. Material property tests were conducted to establish time-dependent concrete mechanical properties. Cast in situ reinforced concrete slabs with control joints were tested for up to 6 months to study the distribution of concrete cracks and development of concrete strains. A finite element method based model was developed, verified and used for a parametric study. It was found that using control joints can successfully regulate the concrete cracks. The slabs with longer joints suffered less cracks at the edges. The influence of the joint depth was insignificant; however, the joints cut all the way through the slabs caused higher tensile strains than those of shallower cuts. It was also found that the reinforcement ratio and concrete proportion had a significant effect on the cracking of the jointed concrete slabs. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The difference in the mold flux composition at different points of the surface where the longitudinal cracks were observed indicates that the longitudinal cracks are initially formed within the mold but developed in secondary cooling zone.Based on hot ductility measurement of two typical steels for container,it is known that the steels are quite embrittle in temperature range of 775 ℃ 825 ℃.By means of increasing Cr/Ni plating thickness on upper part of the mold,reducing mold heat flux,adopting new secondary cooling pattern,etc.,the occurrence of the surface longitudinal cracks on CC slabs for container has been significantly reduced.
The Cracks on Slab Corner During Hot Rolling Process

Abstract:The slab corner surface transversal cracks and longitudinal cracks during a multi-pass V-H rolling process with plain-barreled vertical roll and shape vertical roll were simulated by the explicit dynamic finite element method and updating geometric method, and the effects of vertical roll shape during rolling process on crack closure and growth were analyzed. Results show that, when applying plain-barreled vertical roll during multi-pass V-H rolling process, the deformation of slab corner crack is large, and it tends to spread, for slab corner transversal cracks, the nodes on crack tip lines may diffuse outwards, for triangle transversal cracks and longitudinal cracks, one side of crack may be folded; when applying shape vertical roll during multi-pass V-H rolling process, after vertical rolling, the cracks are closed well, after horizontal rolling, the longitudinal cracks and transversal cracks on slab side surface may open again, but the transversal cracks on slab top surface can be closed well, at the same time, only triangle longitudinal cracks show the phenomenon that one side of crack is folded.

Abstract:This paper investigates the formation mechanism of typical hypoeutectoid steel with longitudinal cracks produced on a caster with billet and slab. It was found that the microstructure of the proeutectoid ferrite is the most critical factor affecting the longitudinal crack. The formation conditions of the proeutectoid ferrite and the reasonable control direction were determined through experiments and calculations. High-temperature tensile experiments revealed that enhanced cooling did not cause additional cracks. Therefore, the final plan was to reduce the formation of proeutectoid ferrite by strengthening the cooling process. As a result, the optimized surface temperature quickly passed the phase transition region of the proeutectoid ferrite and no cracks were found in the optimized billet.

Abstract:An analysis on longitudinal crack of 200 mm×1 300 mm casting slab of UNS N08810 alloy(/%:0.06C, 0.45Si,0.92Mn,0.016P,0.001S,30.15Ni,19.80Cr,47.81Fe,0.33Ti,0.23Al,0.0140N) produced by one-strand vertical continuous casting machine has been carried out by optical,scanning electron microscope,energy dispersive spectrometer and Gleeble-3800 thermal simulation machine.Results show that the longitudinal crack extends along grain boundary of coarse columnar crystal towards inner casting slab,the depth of crack is 18～20 mm.Test of high temperature plasticity of allov obtains that as temperature≥1100℃the reduction of area of alloy dramatically decreases.And the analysis indicates that at early period of solidification the connection between columnar dendrites is weak,the boundary of columnar crystal easily cracks,in addition the brittle phase TiC deposits at grain boundary lead to stress concentration,the crack easily extends along grain boundary to form the longitudinal crack finally.

Abstract:Abstract The formation of internal cracks in continuous casting slabs is mainly attributed to the strain status and microsegregation near the solidifying front of the slabs. By analyzing the internal cracks of medium carbon microalloy steel, the obtained conclusions are that C, P, S, etc. enrich in dendrites and exist in grain boundaries, but these are just the internal causes, and the root cracking causes the tensile stress of solidification front. When the slab passes through the straightening segments, the liquid core thickness is large, and the liquid steel in the space of columnar crystals is not completely frozen. Therefore, the reduction effect of rollers results in the strain of solidification front exceeding the critical value. However, the corresponding strain in the arc and horizontal segments does not exceed this critical value, so the solidification front in the straightening segments would be much easy to crack. The statistics analysis shows that after soft reduction and straightening process are separately carried out, the occurrence rate of intermediate cracks is reduced by 41.3%.
