Abstract:This editorial summarizes selected key contributions of Prof. Stephen Grossberg and describes the papers in this 80th birthday special issue in his honor. His productivity, creativity, and vision would each be enough to mark a scientist of the first caliber. In combination, they have resulted in contributions that have changed the entire discipline of neural networks. Grossberg has been tremendously influential in engineering, dynamical systems, and artificial intelligence as well. Indeed, he has been one of the most important mentors and role models in my career, and has done so with extraordinary generosity and encouragement. All authors in this special issue have taken great pleasure in hereby commemorating his extraordinary career and contributions.

Academician Guodong Cheng's Contributions to Permafrost Science

Permafrost and Periglacial Processes

Abstract:Permafrost is strongly associated with human well‐being and has become a frontier of cryospheric science. Professor Guodong Cheng is one of the most outstanding geocryologists in China. He was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1993 and served as the president of the International Permafrost Association from 1993–1998. In the early 1980s, Professor Cheng proposed the hypothesis of the repeated‐segregation mechanism for the formation of thick‐layered ground ice near the permafrost table. Subsequently, in the early 2000s, he proposed the "proactive roadbed cooling" concept and led the successful development of a series of specific engineering measures that were fully applied in the Qinghai–Tibet Railway Project. Furthermore, he developed a conceptual model to describe the influences of changing permafrost on the groundwater system and discovered the "sink‐holing effect" (channeling with improved hydraulic conductivity of warming permafrost). Professor Cheng has also developed theories on the three‐dimensional zonation and proposed a classification system and an altitude model for high‐altitude permafrost distribution. On this special occasion of Professor Cheng's 80th birthday, this paper summarizes his outstanding achievements on permafrost science, hoping the permafrost research community will carry forward the momentum to further advance permafrost science worldwide.

Abstract:This special issue of Mesozoic is dedicated to the memory of a great specialist in carbonate sedimentology, Dr Juan Li, who passed away on July 19th, 2023. Juan Li sadly left us while logging the Paleocene-Eocene thermal maximum (PETM) interval in the Tibetan Himalaya. This special issue has collected contributions to Mesozoic–Cenozoic geological studies from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau from colleagues, friends, and fellow scientists to express our remembrance and regret.

Abstract:Yanda Li was born in October 1936 in Dongguan,Guangdong,China.His childhood was in war time.He had to move with his parents across several counties and cities,but he managed to accomplish his high-school study in Guangzhou(Fig.1).He showed deep interest in physics in high school and was admitted to the Depart-ment of Electrical Engineering of Tsinghua University in 1954.Because of his excellent performance in college study,he joined the faculty in 1958 before he finished his college study in 1959.Throughout the 60 years from his joining the faculty to his retirement in 2018,Prof.Li has pioneered in a broad range of academic fields and is a founder of several new research fields in Tsinghua University.

Abstract:To commemorate the 90th birthday of Mr.Jiang Kong-yang,this article makes a relatively deep exposition on Mr.Jiang's theory about aesthetic relations and its generative from three aspects: aesthetic relations as the object of the aesthetic study,logical thinking of the theory of aesthetic relations and their generative,and a contemporary reading of Marx's ontology.It is pointed out that it is the aesthetics leading to the future and having a significant enlightenment to the construction and development of Chinese contemporary aesthetics.
