Abstract:Leon Simon was born in Adelaide, South Australia, Austradia, in 1945, and studied at the University of Adelaide, where he received a B. Sc. in 1967, and Ph. D. in 1971. To celebrate his sixtieth birthday, the editorial board of the Pure and Applied Math Quarterly has decided to publish two special issues in honor of him.Leon has made profound contributions to geometric analysis, in particular to the structure of singular sets for solutions of variational problems. They are summarized in the citation for his Bocher Memorial Prize of Americian Mathematics Society in 1994 as follows: Powerful methods were developed in the 1960s to establish the partial regularity of minima and critical points of the Plateau problem and later extended to other variational problems such as the harmonic mapping problem.
