Abstract:Discovery rates of new plant species need to be accelerated because many species will be extinct before they are formally described. Current studies have focused on where new species may occur and their characteristics. However, who will actually discover and describe these new species has received limited attention. Here, we used 31 576 vascular plant species distributed and described in China as a case study to explore the temporal patterns of the nationalities of the taxonomists. We found that most recently described species are endemic species, and there has been an increasing proportion of species descriptions by resident Chinese taxonomists over time. The proportion of species described by resident taxonomists reached an average of 80.8% between 1977 and 2018. By contrast, species discoveries by non-resident experts, often non-endemic species, showed signs of levelling off. Our study underscores an urgent need for training of, support for and collaboration with resident taxonomists in megadiverse countries with a high potential of discovering undescribed plant species.
Perennials Selection and Planting Design for Flower Borders in City Landscape of Hangzhou, China

Abstract:Flower borders originated from the West were introduced to China in the 70's. These have been widely recognized and used in city landscape of Hangzhou in recent years. Based on the definition of flower border, the difference in concepts between flower border and bedding plants are discussed. It simulates natural landscapes of various kinds of flowering perennials by artistic design, which made the landscaping more pleasant and showed difference between the traditional bedding style. Flower borders for ten scenic spots in Hangzhou City have been investigated. The selection of ornamental perennials and their landscape use were studied. The results showed that 89 species of perennials are used typically in spring flower borders. The list of 40 commonly used perennials is shown in detail both for characteristics and growth behavior in Hangzhou city. Concerned about the investigation and analysis, 10 kinds of newly introduced perennials were recommended for further utilization. The iconography and comments of three spots were coordinated with the landscape design, so as to achieve the main principles for planting design of flower border. The valuable significance, prospective future, and the existing problems of the perennials utilizations in modern landscape were also discussed.

Abstract:Flower border is a new application style for landscape planting in recent years.To aim at the status of flower borders used in the urban greenland of Shanghai,a field investigation was carried out for more than one years.40 species of perennials suitable for flower borders were recommended based on the investigation of the all kinds of plants used in the flower borders in Shanghai,as well as the analysis on their growth and appearance in landscape use.The overall evaluation and characteristics of current status for flower borders used in Shanghai were summarized.The exited problems and further development were also indicated.

Our work revisits Rock's botanical expeditions within the broader context of botanical diversity conservation. It outlines his historical experiences in collecting plants in China and enumerates the species composition and phenotypic traits of the plants he collected. Additionally, it also analyzes the spatial distribution of the species, the completeness of his collection and the alpha- and beta-diversity of the plants he collected. Our findings reveal that Rock led four major botanical expeditions in China between 1922 and 1933, amassing a total of 28 184 sheets and 16 608 numbers across 204 families, 1081 genera and 4231 species. His focus was predominantly on ornamental species, which exhibit a variety of flower colors and inflorescences. His collection work spanned 5 provinces, 35 cities and 72 counties, with a notable concentration in the Hengduan Mountains, a current biodiversity hotspot. This study not only reconstructs Rock's botanical legacy but also offers valuable historical data and fresh analytical insights for understanding contemporary plant diversity. It contributes to the ongoing discourse on the importance of preserving plant diversity as a cornerstone of environmental sustainability.

Abstract:It has been approved that life path and discipline tree techniques developed by time geographers are an effective method to examine academic thoughts and related activity characteristics for scientists, especially for those geographers who have rich time space path and traveling experiences in their lives. The author of this paper considered the technique suitable to observe personal experiences of Professor CHEN Chuan kang (1931～1997), the former vice president of the Geographical Society of China and a faculty of Department of Urban and Environmental Sciences, Peking University who had rich travel records, wide territories of research interests, and plenty of academic writings in his life span of 66 years. On the statistical basis of all his 1212 papers and books, the author firstly analyzed distributions of all works from the temporary dimension, which not only reflected changes of the number of Chenu0027s works with fluctuant evolutions of modern Chinese society, but also reflected the changes of the academic disciplines themselves. This kind of disciplinary shifts demonstrated both transformation of personal research interests of Professor Chen and transformation of the whole geographical development in China for about fifty years from the 1950s to 1990s. Secondly, using the concept of "discipline tree", the author checked Chenu0027s personal academic system, from both perspectives of disciplinary territories Chen had touched and evolutional process of these disciplines during Chenu0027s time, which could figure out an entire landscape of the professional experience of Chenu0027s creations to scientific knowledge.

Abstract:Zhi-Hong Xu is a plant physiologist who studied botany at Peking University (1959-1965). He joined the Shanghai Institute of Plant Physiology (SIPP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), as a graduate student in 1965. He recalls what has happened for the institute, during the Cultural Revolution, and he witnessed the spring of science eventually coming to China. Xu was a visiting scholar at the John Innes Institute and in the Department of Botany at Nottingham University in the United Kingdom (1979-1981). He became deputy director of SIPP in 1983 and director in 1991; he also chaired the State Key Laboratory of Plant Molecular Genetics SIPP (1988-1996). He worked as a visiting scientist in the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology, National University of Singapore, for three months each year (1989-1992). He served as vice president of CAS (1992-2002) and as president of Peking University (1999-2008). Over these periods he was heavily involved in the design and implementation of major scientific projects in life sciences and agriculture in China. He is an academician of CAS and member of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World. His scientific contributions mainly cover plant tissue culture, hormone mechanism in development, as well as plant developmental response to environment. Xu, as a scientist and leader who has made an impact in the community, called up a lot of excellent young scientists returning to China. His efforts have promoted the fast development of China's plant and agricultural sciences.

Abstract:Professor Guo Lingzhi is one of the most famous Chinese structural geologists, an academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and has been working for about 70 years on teaching and scientific study. In China, he is one of the earliest and outstanding scholars using plate theory to study China geology and tectonics Since the 1960's, he and his research group have been studying geotectonics of South China. They discovered, for the first time, the important evidence of Proterozoic plate movement in the early period of Earth evolution, including ophiolitic melange, CA-type volcanic rock series and island arc-type flysch, proposing the eight geological marks confirming ancient plate boundaries within continental block. In the past 70 years, he loves his motherland, devotes himself to geosciences and has acquired fruitful results in teaching and researching. The author introduced his learning experience, some important results and scholarships, displayed an older scientist's elegant demeanor and successful path.

Abstract:Abstract Sung Shu Chien (钱崇澍, 1883–1965) (Fig. 1) was a famous botanist and educator in China, one of the founders of Chinese plant taxonomy, plant physiology, geobotany, and floristics. He devoted his whole life to scientific research and education, and was a founder of modern Chinese botany. Sung Shu Chien pioneered several research fields in modern Chinese botany. In 1916, he published the first literature in Latin on the naming and classification of plants. In the following year, he published the earliest thesis on the application of modern scientific methods of plant physiology in China. He wrote the first paper in the area of plant ecology and geobotany in China. He was a pioneer in the systematic study of the families Orchidaceae, Urticaceae, Fabaceae, and Ranunculaceae in China. From 1959 to 1965, he was the chief editor of “Flora of China” and was responsible for the section on Urticaceae (Yu, 1983). Sung Shu Chien initiated the research of plant taxonomy, plant physiology and plant ecology in China, and laid a solid foundation for the extensive research of vegetation, plant zoning and plant specialties in China (Chien et al., 1956). By skillfully combining research and education, he cultivated Chinese scientific and technological talents in botany.

Abstract:The winter plant landscape was evaluated with questionnaire and site investigation in winter.The investigation result showed only 11.7% respondents agreed that winter plant arrangement was well done.They believed the current problems were mainly focusing on the few species and numbers of winter-flowering plants,poor color layers,absent open area for a quiet rest and deficient tree species with ornamental trunks and fruits.The application status of winter ornamental plants in Hangzhou were investigated and the results showed there were 42(22 ornamental flowers,10 ornamental fruits,9 ornamental trunks,1 ornamental bud) ornamental species in Hangzhou.Mains problems were deficient in plant species application of new plant resources and local plants.Consequently,increasing different selections of ornamental plants' color and species and create rational resting space,was an effective way to escalate winter plant landscape in Hangzhou's gardens.

Abstract:On the early February to May in 2012 ,Zhejiang agriculture and Forestry University spring flowering plant species and the change of florescence was investigated by the method of field investigation in spring.The investigation result showed there were about 62 spring flowering plants of leafy 24 after flower first,mosaic with eight species,after the first leaf 30 kinds of flowers picked on campus.On the basis of investigation and research ,from the summary of the three aspects of how to construct spring flowering plant landscape on campus ,including the selection of plant species ,plant combination and plant landscaping forms ,some problems and ad-vices for plant landscape promotion are proposed.This provides reference for similar campus to create spring flowering landscape in the future.

Abstract:Urban biodiversity is strongly correlated with human well-being and is quickly becoming a new research field. Most previous studies in this field focus on patterns of species richness but few consider species and trait compositions and how these are shaped by anthropogenic and environmental drivers. Such information, however, is critical for effective planning and management of urban species. We compiled published species lists from 71 Chinese university campuses. We also collected environmental data for each campus, including anthropogenic (campus age and area) and environmental variables (climate and topography), to explore the distribution patterns and the drivers of species richness, composition and traits. We found that university campuses in China maintain substantial plant diversity, including at least 1565 woody and 1614 herbaceous species. The distribution pattern of campus species richness was mostly driven by anthropogenic variables, being positively correlated with campus age and size. In contrast, campus species composition and leaf traits were mostly driven by climate variables. This was especially true for woody plants of which campus species composition and traits were more constrained by mean annual temperature than herb species. Our study provides a basic but diverse database for the selection of campus plants, which can benefit the management of urban ecosystems. Our results reveal that landscape design can influence urban species richness, species composition is still restricted by the natural environment. Hence, many endangered species can be protected in these human-friendly urban ecosystems if they have suitable traits adapted to local climatic conditions.

Abstract:Based on the investigation of wild ornamental spermatophyte in Guangzhou,648 wild spermatophyte species were ornamental in Guangzhou,including 136 families and 393 genera.This paper evaluated their ornamental characteristics by AHP,and made suggestions that 109 species had high ornamental value which were devided into 4 types.The native plants such as colored leaves trees,ornamental fruit and flower plants,lianes,ground covers,sciophyte and honey plants had great potential in further exploitation and application in horticulture and Lunar New Year Flower market.Through full development,the human-arbor-shrub landscape harmonious development was promoted in deed.

Abstract:Landscape ecology has achieved great progress since its introduction to China in early 1980s. Based on 619 collections of literatures and 14 collections of books, this paper has all the literatures and books classified, arranged in order and counted on different special subject. According to the results of classified statistics, the authors discuss and analyze how landscape ecology research was going in China during 1990s. Moreover, this paper can also provide scientific basis for those who want to grasp and keep abreast of current focus and trend of landscape ecology in China.

Abstract:Analysis and study through quadrat survey on characters of forest community in Gutianshan Nature Reserve of Zhejiang province showed that the forest is dominated by evergreen trees like Fagaceae, Cinnamomum Trew, Camellia L., Ericaceae and Rosaceae with characters such as leaves simple, leathery, small and medium, etc. The vertical structure was complicated with tree, shrub and herb and some interlayer plants.

Abstract:The biogeography research at Peking University commenced in the late 1950s with formation of a Plant Geography Group.It was expanded to the Teaching and Research Section of Landscape Ecology in the late 1980s and further grown into the Department of Ecology at the beginning of the 21st century.As a part of the Department of Geography (Now College of Urban and Environmental Sciences,Peking University),biogeographical and ecological research team of Peking University has greatly improved the research of vegetation structure,function and dynamics with efforts of more than half a century.It has made pioneering achievements on research about plant geography in arid and semiarid areas,timberline and other ecologically important areas.It is among the first institutions in the country to promote macro-ecology including landscape ecology and urban ecology.In recent years,the Peking University research team has carried out pioneering work on global change studies,including climate change and ecological response,carbon cycle,biodiversity conservation,plant stoichiometry,serving the country's policy of mitigating and adapting climate change and conserving biodiversity.Research facilities of Peking University biogeography and ecology team have renewed and built over the last years.The construction of observation facilities in Saihanba Ecological Station,the platforms of forest fertilization experiment,and timberline monitoring strongly enhance the ability of biogeographical and ecological studies.The National Natural Science Foundation Innovation Research Team "Structure and function of terrestrial vegetation in China" has played a role of research integration.In the future,the integration of different scales of ecological research will be strengthened and ecological degradation and restoration will be promoted.
