Abstract:Joseph Polchinski (1954-2018), one of the the leading theoretical physicists of the past 50 years, was an exceptionally broad and deep thinker. He made fundamental contributions to quantum field theory, advancing the role of the renormalization group, and to cosmology, addressing the cosmological constant problem. Polchinski's work on D-branes revolutionized string theory and led to the discovery of a nonperturbative quantum theory of gravity. His recent, incisive reformulation of the black hole information paradox presents us with a profound challenge. Joe was deeply devoted to his family, a beloved colleague and advisor, an excellent writer, and an accomplished athlete.

Abstract:Dedicated to the centenary of the Ioffe Institute, the article contains the shortest review of scientific achievements of the theorists of the institute during this time. We concentrate mainly on research in the field of elementary particle physics, astrophysics, nuclear theory and atoms. To obtain very important scientific results became possible because outstanding theoreticians worked at this Institute. The high level of research persisted in spite of several mass moves of theorists - then to Kharkov, then to Moscow, then abroad. The author can testify to the atmosphere that reigned in the FTI in person, since he works at this institute since 1958. The article deals not only with research activity, but also with the famous physics schools and their outstanding cultural programs. We present also examples of extraordinary successful activity of theorists far beyond the field of their narrow specialization.

Abstract:I study a quantum Lifshitz point in a three-dimensional itinerant antiferromagnet, in particular the scaling of the Néel temperature, the correlation length, the staggered susceptibility, the specific heat coefficient and the resistivity. At low temperatures, the model is shown to have the inverse staggered susceptibility and the resistivity varying as T$^{5/4}$, and the specific heat coefficient varying as T$^{1/4}$.

Abstract:In memory of the famous physicist Bruno Pontecorvo, whereof is just occurred the centenary anniversary of the birth and the twentieth anniversary of the death, this paper traces the scientific and human adventure of the italian scientist, from the pioneering studies of nuclear physics together with his master Enrico Fermi, to the excellent results in particle physics, in particular his research and insights about the neutrino. As much attention is paid to the human experience, his relationship with politics and the choice to embrace the Soviet socialist model. A short portrait to commemorate a scientist symbol of the twentieth century.

Abstract:In the realm of physics, a pivotal moment occurred six decades ago when Brian Josephson made a groundbreaking prediction, setting in motion a series of events that would eventually earn him the prestigious Nobel Prize eleven years later. This prediction centered around what is now known as the Josephson effect, a phenomenon with far-reaching implications. At the heart of this effect lies the Josephson junction (JJ), a device that has become a linchpin in various scientific applications. This chapter delves into the foundational principles of the Josephson effect and the remarkable properties of JJs. From their role in metrology to their application in radiation detectors, these junctions have ushered in a new era of electronics. Exploiting the unique features of superconductive devices, such as high speed, low dissipation, and dispersion, JJs find today practical implementation in the development of superconductive qubits and nanotechnology applications.

Abstract:This special feature, dedicated to Michael J. Duff FRS on the occasion of his 70th birthday, concerns topics in 'Quantum gravity, branes and M-theory'. These three intertwining subjects have been central to Duff's work; indeed many of his contributions have come to define significant aspects of what we actually mean by these terms. From the discovery of Weyl anomalies to recognising superstrings in 10 dimensions as a special case of membranes in an 11-dimensional M-theory, Duff's insights have shaped major developments across these themes. So it is an apposite setting for such a celebration and we are delighted to be able to include in this collection contributions from many of the pioneers of quantum gravity, branes and M-theory. The breadth of these topics has placed little constraint on the multiplicity of ideas appearing in these pages, from astrophysical black holes to chaotic condensed matter. Again, this is fitting as Duff's scientific remit spans a remarkable diversity of motifs, from the fundamentals of M-theory to entanglement in quantum information.
