Abstract:The publication characterizes autobiographies of the historian, ethnographer, linguist, “father” of the Russian school of Mayanism Yuri Valentinovich Knorozov (1922–99), that have been identified in the fonds of various institutions and departments: (State Archive of the Russian Federation (GARF), Scientific Archive of the Russian Ethnographic Museum (REM), Scientific Archive of the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography of the Russian Academy of Sciences (MAE RAN). Autobiography is a “free” author's presentation (with fixed semantic accents, sometimes duplicating the data of personnel sheet) and a mandatory formal element of Soviet personnel management. The text of the autobiography was influenced by the document’s purpose: individual facts unfit for socially and ideologically correct biography were “hushed up” or otherwise carefully explained by the author. Drawing on Yu. V. Knorozov’s autobiographies written in different years and for different reasons (admission to graduate school, employment, dissertation defense, promotion to honorary titles), the article assesses how explanatory statements were changing textually. “Corrections” are considered using the example of specific facts: during the Great Patriotic War (from 1941 to February 1943), Yuri Knorozov, a student of the Kharkiv Pedagogical University, unfit for military service for health reasons, was in the territory occupied by the enemy. The article is accompanied by the publication of a detailed autobiography of Yuri Knorozov (1981) compiled on the occasion of his nomination as corresponding member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences in “General history” (ethnography). The autobiography text contains information on most important facts of Yuri Knorozov’s scientific biography, including his expeditions (field research), reports at foreign scientific events and participation in international scientific associations. The author concludes that it is more important to analyze not the content of the autobiography, but the socio-political circumstances and practices that determined its semantic framework.

Abstract:Joseph Polchinski (1954-2018), one of the the leading theoretical physicists of the past 50 years, was an exceptionally broad and deep thinker. He made fundamental contributions to quantum field theory, advancing the role of the renormalization group, and to cosmology, addressing the cosmological constant problem. Polchinski's work on D-branes revolutionized string theory and led to the discovery of a nonperturbative quantum theory of gravity. His recent, incisive reformulation of the black hole information paradox presents us with a profound challenge. Joe was deeply devoted to his family, a beloved colleague and advisor, an excellent writer, and an accomplished athlete.

Abstract:The paper is dedicated to the 90-th anniversary of Rujero Sergeevich Gilyarevsky, one of the most prominent and respected scholars in the national book, library and information studies. The main stages of his professional career are characterized in brief: his working for All-Union State Library for Foreign Literature, Moscow Library Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences All-Russia Institute for Sci-tech Information (VINITI) and Moscow State University. Special attention is given to his theses researches (1958 and 1989), and his scholarly works – among them, the most popular monograph “The basics of the information science” (“Osnovy informatiki”, in Russian), all of them contributed a lot to our professional knowledge. His areas of expertise are: science information and communication, computer technologies (in particular, the problems of hypertext and e-books), and information management. The author discusses the most important vectors of Gilyarevsky’s professional work, i. e. teaching at the Journalism Department of Moscow State University, supervising post-graduates and doctoral students, and editing and publishing journals in the information science (“Sci-tech Information”, series 1 and 2, International Forum on Information). The width and depth of Gilyarevsky’s academic interests are emphasized.

Abstract:The activities of the outstanding representative of Russian book culture Nikolai Mikhailovich Lisovsky, whose 170th anniversary is celebrated in 2024, have received high praise and recognition not only in Russia, but also abroad. The article examines the process of spreading the bibliographer’s international fame in the period from the late 19th century to the 1920s. Critic reviews of N.M. Lisovsky’s works, published at this time in France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, the USA, and Poland, are analyzed. Archival materials of N.M. Lisovsky’s correspondence with foreign figures, stored at the Manuscript Department of the Institute of Russian Literature of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Sci entific and Bibliographic Archive of the Russian Book Chamber, are also used. It is shown that during this period in foreign literature the main bibliographic works of N.M. Lisovsky were characterized, his biography, work in bibliographic societies, the system of scientific views in the field of bibliology were covered.

Abstract:The study of personal libraries (book collections) is timely due to the implementation of the state policy to expose library collections and study regional book (documentary) heritage. One can note an increasing interest of book historians, specialists in the field of library and book study activities in private book collections of famous people, outstanding cultural and scientific figures, as well as personal libraries of scientists. A holistic look at the book collections of scientists through the prism of the scientist’s book environment complements and enriches the idea of the researcher’s creative laboratory, and provides additional material on the history of science and book culture. The scientist’s personal library acquires a memorial status and contributes to preservation of his memory. The article is dedicated to the memory of Bogdan Vyacheslavovich Voitsekhovsky, a famous scientist, who made a great contribution into the national science and economy, the main years of whose life were associated with the Siberian Branch (SB) of the USSR Academy of Sciences – SB RAS and Novosibirsk Academgorodok. The purpose of this article is to characterize the personal library of Academician B. V. Voitsekhovsky stored in the Central Scientific Library of UrB RAS. The work reveals the composition of the library, characterizes the owner’s records and inscripts; determines the status of the researcher’s book collection as a personal (memorial) library, reflecting the main directions of the scholar’s scientific and inventive activities. This will permit to add to the data on the history of Russian science, with the aim of popularization of historical and cultural heritage.

Using fundamental techniques that are rooted in classical topology, Turaev introduced new ideas and tools that transformed the field of knots and links and invariants of 3-manifolds. He is one of the main founders of the new topic called quantum topology. Abstract:The purpose of this publication is to introduce into scientific circulation the transcript of the meeting of the Directorate of the Marx Engels Lenin Institute (IMEL) dated November 20, 1940. The published source belongs to the problematic field of the history of historical science at the turn of the 1930s-1940s. The meeting reflected in the document became one of the few known to us "exchanges of views" within the institute on the development of the author's team of the biography of V.I. Lenin. The document complements the plots related to the functioning of the cult of personality of I.V. Stalin and its limits in Soviet historical science; gives an understanding of how the image of a professional revolutionary should appear; reflects the technical nuances that imposed objective restrictions on the author's team during the writing of the biography of V.I. Lenin. The creators of the text found themselves in a certain ideological framework: they were obliged to build the reviewed Lenin's works, focusing on the "Short Course of the history of the CPSU (b)". Separate text inserts and quotations of V.I. Lenin in the text of the biography were subject to the same kind of adjustments. The construction of the image of the leader from the point of view of his human qualities posed a large number of questions to the team of authors concerning the image of a professional revolutionary. How should one comprehend the theoretical heritage of the leader and how to combine it with practice? How should the portrait of V.I. Lenin be given? Is it worth showing the personality through everyday details (through a description of his rest, attitude to nature, etc.) or is it quite possible to limit yourself to showing high culture in the work and modesty of the leader? And is it necessary to set such a goal at all? Ultimately, during the discussion that unfolded during the meeting of the IMEL directorate, the team of authors decided to focus mainly on the political activities of V.I. Lenin, limiting themselves to only rare references to the personal life of a professional revolutionary. The source was identified in the Russian State Archive of Socio-Political History (RGASPI) in f. 71. The document is a typewritten original and is published in accordance with modern rules of spelling and punctuation. Obvious shortcomings and a few errors have been corrected in the text. Information about the persons and scientific works mentioned in the source is given in the footnote. An important pre-publication comment updating this source is important. The source is published with banknotes: plots that are insignificant from the point of view of the issues discussed are cut out.
