Abstract:In a positive response to the Belt and Road initiative of China, the construction of international civil engineering program is proposed, and this program is urgently needed to train engineers serving for worldwide construction projects. This paper reports the practice of building International Civil Engineering program at the Nanjing Tech University. The background and target of this program are given, along with the organization and management of curriculum. The management of faculty members, establishment of regulations and facilities are introduced in this paper, followed by the discussion of the challenging problems and possible solutions.

Abstract:Professor Guo Lingzhi is one of the most famous Chinese structural geologists, an academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and has been working for about 70 years on teaching and scientific study. In China, he is one of the earliest and outstanding scholars using plate theory to study China geology and tectonics Since the 1960's, he and his research group have been studying geotectonics of South China. They discovered, for the first time, the important evidence of Proterozoic plate movement in the early period of Earth evolution, including ophiolitic melange, CA-type volcanic rock series and island arc-type flysch, proposing the eight geological marks confirming ancient plate boundaries within continental block. In the past 70 years, he loves his motherland, devotes himself to geosciences and has acquired fruitful results in teaching and researching. The author introduced his learning experience, some important results and scholarships, displayed an older scientist's elegant demeanor and successful path.

Abstract:Mr. President, Members of the society, and guests: It is a great honor to be the recipient of this year’s MSA award. It has been a long journey for me from a high school graduate in China who spoke no English to a young scientist recognized by my good friends and colleagues of the MSA. I could not have completed this journey without the help of many distinguished scientists and the opportunities created for me at different times and places. The year I graduated from high school was the second year after the reform of the Chinese education system that allowed students to enter college based solely on the accumulative score of their national entry exams. I was fortunate enough to become a student in the Department of Geology at Zhejiang University, one of the prestigious universities in China. During my last year in college, I was assigned to do a senior thesis at the Institute of Geochemistry, Academia Sinica, where Lin Chuanxian introduced me to geological problems that can be solved by thermodynamic calculations. The following year, I went back to the Institute of Geochemistry as a special graduate student after I received a fellowship from the Chinese Education Ministry that allowed me to pursue a Ph.D. degree abroad. Abstract:Prof.HUANG Wen-xi gained excellent research achievements with creativity in both structural engineering and geotechnical engineering.He,pioneer of FEM,developed the method of fictitious grillage in the analysis of arch dams.He was the first to put forward a 3-D settlement analysis method of soil foundation in which the influence of the stress path was included.He was also the founder of the dynamic triaxial test,which has been well accepted by the geotechnical engineers all over the world.The Tsinghua elastoplastic model of soil founded by him is an original model of soil and has pushed forward the research of constitutive relationship of soil in China.

Abstract:In the last ten years,experimental mineralogy-petrology-geochemistry fields in China have obtained rapid progresses,not only in the experimental equipment and technology,but also in the research team and research level.Main achievements include studies on the crust and mantle rheology,the composition of the outer core,measurements of physical properties of rocks and minerals under high temperature and high pressure,partial melting of the upper mantle,phase equilibrium in the metamorphic basalt system,and mineral/melt trace elements distribution.These achievements lay a solid foundation for our experimental mineralogy-petrology-geochemistry research in the coming years.

Abstract:Professor Lina Zhang (1940–2020), born in Guangze, Fujian, China, was a distinguished expert in polymer chemistry and physics both domestic and international, served as a prestigious faculty member of Wuhan University, and was elected Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2011. In 2011, she won the Anselm Payne Award from the American Chemical Society, and a year later in 2012, the top award of the National Natural Science Prize of China. She was appointed Associated Editor of ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering, as well as Editorial board member of Journal of Applied Polymer Science, Cellulose, and so on. In 2016, the Chemistry World journal of the Royal Society of Chemistry highlighted "Lina Zhang reflects on five decades as part of China's green chemistry vanguard."

Abstract:Under the system of responsibility professor for undergraduate courses,the teaching team's construction scheme and implementing rules were formulated.Lots of practice and exploration were carried out in the team construction,teaching reform and teaching resources' construction.The evaluation criteria of teaching effect of team members were formulated as well.The corresponding evaluation results are an important basis for bonus allocation.The teaching research and discussion activities are regularly held in various forms.The establishment of the responsibility professor system has enhanced the team cohesion,greatly improved the teaching ability and teaching effect.Unanimous praises were received from both supervisors and students in the teaching quality assessment.

Permafrost and Periglacial Processes

Abstract:Permafrost is strongly associated with human well‐being and has become a frontier of cryospheric science. Professor Guodong Cheng is one of the most outstanding geocryologists in China. He was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1993 and served as the president of the International Permafrost Association from 1993–1998. In the early 1980s, Professor Cheng proposed the hypothesis of the repeated‐segregation mechanism for the formation of thick‐layered ground ice near the permafrost table. Subsequently, in the early 2000s, he proposed the "proactive roadbed cooling" concept and led the successful development of a series of specific engineering measures that were fully applied in the Qinghai–Tibet Railway Project. Furthermore, he developed a conceptual model to describe the influences of changing permafrost on the groundwater system and discovered the "sink‐holing effect" (channeling with improved hydraulic conductivity of warming permafrost). Professor Cheng has also developed theories on the three‐dimensional zonation and proposed a classification system and an altitude model for high‐altitude permafrost distribution. On this special occasion of Professor Cheng's 80th birthday, this paper summarizes his outstanding achievements on permafrost science, hoping the permafrost research community will carry forward the momentum to further advance permafrost science worldwide.
