Abstract:This is a brief account of my career in the Department of Physics of the National Central University and Nanjing University from 1946 to 2006. I describe the courses that I have taught, the influential books that I have read, and the books and monographs that I have written as an educator and research scientist.

Abstract:The history of library science education in Nanjing University could be traced back 1922, from 1922 to 2022, Nanjing University’s library science education has gone through a hundred years. This article summarized its spirits through reviewing the centennial history of Nanjing University’s library science education. It mainly used the historical research method to analyze the Chinese and English archives on this topic. The spirits of Nanjing University’s library science education could be summarized to 5 points: insisting on the humanism as well as technology are both important; encouraging the interdisciplinary; combing the research, teaching and service together; combing the theory and practice together; and focusing on China as well as being with the global view.

Abstract:"Soil Mechanics" is a degree course in Zhejiang University City College of Civil Engineering. The teaching group of this course has thought and practiced the reforms in teacher-student interaction, attendance innovation, materials selection, layout of the homework and the form of practice teaching. Simplifying the derivation of calculation formulas and strengthening the experiment and practice which can develop the students' manipulative ability and innovative spirit. Interacting with students which can make them learn more about the teacher and this course. At the same time, teachers can understand better about the students' thinking, then adapt and improve each other. The reform of teaching material selection and arrangement of work which make students have more examples to refer. The free choice in after-school subject which allow students to sum up the knowledge points and that would enable the consolidation of classroom teaching. At the same time, by consulting reference books, students will find the knowledge points which the teacher did not emphasized.

Abstract:Professor Yitai Qian,a pioneer in nanomaterials,an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and a professor at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC),has committed his entire career to the development of solid-state chemistry and nanoscience in China.Prof.Qian is recognized for his pioneering contributions to the development of emerging high-Tc superconducting materials,and the development of solvothermal methodology for the synthesis of a wide range of low-dimensional nanomaterials.Beyond the landmarking scientific advancements he has made in his own trailblazing research,Prof.Qian has directly mentored more than 100 excellent PhD students,in addition to many more master and undergraduate students,many of them have gone on to become the leading scientists in China and worldwide in the field of nanoscience and beyond.Without exaggeration,the academic offspring and extended family of Prof.Qian have contributed a substantial portion of nanoscience and nanotechnology development over the past several decades.
Forty Years’ Experience in Teaching Fluid Mechanics at Strasbourg University

Abstract:A summary of the personal investment in teaching fluid mechanics over 40 years in a French university is presented. Learning and Teaching Science and Engineering has never been easy, and in recent years it has become a crucial challenge for curriculum developers and teaching staff to offer attractive courses and optimized assessments. One objective is to ensure that students acquire competitive skills in higher science education that enable them to compete in the employment market, as the mechanical field is a privileged sector in industry. During the last decade, classical learning and teaching methods have been coupled with hands-on practice for future schoolteachers in a specific course on subjects including fluid mechanics. The hands-on/minds-on/hearts-on approach has demonstrated its effectiveness in training primary school teachers, and fluids are certainly a nice source of motivation for pupils in science learning. In mechanical engineering, for undergraduate and graduate students, the development of teaching material and the learning and teaching experience covers up to 40 years, mostly on fluid dynamics and related topics. Two periods are identified, those prior to and after the Bologna Process. Most recently, teaching instruction has focused on the Fluid Mechanics Concept Inventory (FMCI). This inventory has been recently introduced in France, with some modifications, and remedial tools have been developed and are proposed to students to remove misconceptions and misunderstandings of key concepts in fluid mechanics. The FMCI has yet to be tested in French higher education institutions, as are the innovative teaching methods that are emerging in fluid mechanics.

Abstract:The Year 2013 is probably as much remarkable for the development of modern physical science in China as it is for School of Physics at Peking University. One hundred years ago, the physics division was born in Peking University, as the very first physics higher education unit having appeared in modern national universities of China. In the first one hundred years, the School has made distinguished contributions to the nation and to the world in both education and academia. As we celebrate the birthday of its first century and set our sights on the next, it is my great pleasure to invite you to this special issue of Frontier of Physics on “Centennial Physics at Peking University”. In 1913, the “WuLi Men” (Physics Division) was established at Peking University, and was later renamed the Department of Physics in 1919. With the reorganization of the Chinese system of higher education in 1952, the new Physics Department of Peking University was created from the merger of the physics departments of Peking University, Tsinghua University and Yenching University. This became the premier center for physics in China. The School of Physics was established in 2001, and includes not only the traditional fields of study in physics, but also related physical sciences. Throughout its history, the School has educated and hosted many prominent physicists, including figures such as Ta-You Wu, C. N. Yang, T. D. Lee, and Kun Huang. Today, the School of Physics includes Physics, Astronomy, Atmospheric & Oceanic Sciences, and Nuclear Science & Technology. Research is devoted not only to the frontiers of fundamental physics but also to the innovation of advanced technology. Major research fields include high energy physics, astrophysics and cosmology, radioactive nuclear physics, high energy-density physics, key technologies for advanced light sources and particle beams, the interaction of particle beams with materials, mesoscopic semiconductor light emission and laser physics, ultrafast physics, optical properties of artificial microstructures and mesoscopic devices, electro-magnetic properties of mesoscopic functional systems, mesoscopic theory and material computation, high-temperature superconductivity physics and devices, nano-material and devices, near-field optics, quantum materials and quantum manipulation, soft condensed matter physics, biophysics, medical physics and imaging, atmospheric physics and the environment, meteorology and climate change, physical oceanography, and many others. The School consists of eleven divisions and seven related research institutes as follows, especially in which Daniel Chee Tsui Laboratory at Peking University was established in 2012, as Prof. Tsui, 1988 Nobel Prize Laureate, became a member of the School.

The Three Versions of Teaching Materials of Meng Sen's Lectures at Peking University

Abstract:Meng Sen taught “The History of Manchuria” in Peking University four times,the first three times for undergraduates,and the fourth time for graduate students.The History of Manchuria we see now were the teaching materials for lectures taught for undergraduates。 Meng Sen taught “History of the Ming and Qing Dynasties” three times in Peking University.For the first two times,the course was completed in one year.For the third time,he started to teach it in two years.There is process of gradual revision and supplement of Teaching Materials of the History ofthe Ming and Qing Dynasties.Teaching Materials on the History ofthe Ming Dynasty we see now is the final version that was printed and published in 1936.While the part after Qianglong in Teaching Materials of the Qing Dynasty was supplemented by Meng Sen after 1935 and the supplements had not been taught in the course “History of the Ming and Qing Dynasties” Besides,Meng Seng was not quite satisfied with his works such as History of Manchuria.He planned to write a more systematic work o the history of Manchuria or a teaching book.It is a pity that he did not fulfill his wish.

Abstract:Teaching is a challenging job. It requires mentoring and helping students to grasp the meaning and understand the message the subject delivers. A teacher is one who inspires guides, enlightens and motivates the learner. It is lifelong process. This article is based on narrative inquiry research on the lived experience of a recently retired English teacher from Tribhuvan University who contributed a lot in English education. It explores how a master degree holder in English education joined at university and constructed and reconstructed his identity in his teaching profession unless he retired. Data were collected from face to face in depth interviews and telephone conversation then analyzed through narrative case analysis. The findings show that a university English teacher develops and modifies his identity through engaging himself in different professional development activities, interacting with different socializing factors and experiencing various emotions in university activities. He also works as curriculum developer, examiner, and invigilator, external and internal examiner in practical examinations. He has to labour hard in his whole professional period and has to balance his emotional behaviours, that is, happy moments as well as frustrated moments. The paper concludes with some implications for language teachers in context of education campuses under faculty of education in T.U.

Abstract:This study is an investigation into Chinese EFL teachers’ knowledge and understanding of teaching English as a foreign language within the context of a time of tremendous social change in China. In a medium-sized city, biographical narrative interviews and observation were used to three Chinese secondary EFL teachers, of three successive generations. An in-depth narrative analysis interpreting their metaphors, and constructing their life stories is employed to understand the biographical narrative data. It indicates how individual teacher’s knowledge is both constrained and enabled by themselves and by the wider society they live in, and how change and continuity are intertwined in the teaching and learning practices of the three generations. This paper also addresses certain key issues in biographical narrative studies, namely subjectivity, representation, and cultural bearings, and teachers’ knowledge, all of which constitute a form of pedagogy in educational research.

Abstract:Special class secondary school physics teachers represent outstanding secondary school physics teachers in China. This paper analyzes the personal life histories of 13 outstanding secondary school physics teachers. We coded and analyzed the sample materials and summarized the laws of professional development of outstanding secondary school physics teachers. The study shows that cultivating outstanding secondary school physics teachers takes a relatively long time. Their professional development can be divided into five stages: the pre-service learning period, the initial adaptation period, the exploration and skill-developing period, the maturing innovation period, and the excellence and advancement period. Individuals’ own efforts and continuous learning, guidance from master teachers and experts, and support from family and school play an important role in the professional growth of outstanding secondary school physics teachers. Outstanding secondary school physics teachers can apply lifelong learning, do educational research, and develop their own distinctive physics teaching styles.

Abstract:There has so far been no comprehensive study of the relationship between Yan Fu and Fudan College (复旦公学) due to lack of materials. A scrutiny of four newly discovered essays by Yan Fu and of newspaper reports shows that Yan made a great contribution to Fudan College’s early development, from its first years, when he was Chairman of the Board, to his later position as Superintendent. His contribution to Fudan’s shift from being a private to a public institution was particularly great. However, as he was concurrently Superintendent of Anhui Higher School, and as his reputation grew, he became too busy with outside activities to take care of business at Fudan. As a result, he entrusted Fudan’s business to his private connections and ran its affairs from a distance, a situation which led to sharp conflicts with a Fudan staff member, Ye Zhongyu, and ended with Yan’s resignation. A re-examination of Yan Fu’s relations with Fudan may correct errors in previous studies, fill gaps in the history of the Fudan University, and show one facet of the prism of scholarly life and thought in early modern China.
