Abstract:We demonstrated a 100-MHz Er-doped fiber laser mode locked by nonlinear amplifying loop mirror with low timing jitter on the “optical cubes” structure. The laser employed an all polarization-maintaining configuration. To guide the experimental construction, a numerical simulation of the laser was implemented via the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation and Jones matrices. The laser configuration with the optimal output performance was adopted in the experiment. With the contribution of the “optical cubes” structure, the laser exhibited a good repetition frequency $(f_r)$ stability. The root-mean-square (RMS) free-running $f_r$ drift was 106.72 Hz without temperature control over 20 hours. In free-running operation, the short-term overlapping Allan deviation of $f_r$ at 1 s reached the level of $4.47 \times 10^{-10}$ . Furthermore, utilizing the balanced optical cross-correlator method, we measured the timing jitter for the direct output from the laser without amplification and pulse compression. The free-running RMS timing jitter was as low as 99.63 as in the integration range of 10 kHz to 1 MHz. The dominant noise source was analyzed with well-established analytic model.

Abstract:Compact, high repetition rate ( ∼ G H z level) femtosecond fiber lasers are attractive for high-precision, high-speed scientific and engineering fields. However, the noise of such a laser seems far higher than low repetition rate ones, which limits its application. Motivated by this challenge, we combined the solid state and the fiber laser into a novel and highly stable “solid-state fiber laser” operating at 840 MHz repetition rate. Benefitting from the robust architecture of “optical cubes,” the laser shows an ultralow timing jitter (130 as) in free-running operation. This is the first time the timing jitter of a high repetition rate fiber laser has been brought to the attosecond level, to the best of our knowledge. This breakthrough makes an impact on the concept that the high repetition rate is associated with high timing jitter in fiber lasers and opens the way for real-world applications of these lasers.

Abstract:We demonstrate sub-femtosecond timing jitter of ultrashort pulses from a dispersion managed Yb-fiber laser mode-locked by a SESAM. Timing jitters of the mode-locked Yb-laser under different dispersion conditions (when the intra-cavity dispersions are −0.005 ps2, +0.001 ps2, +0.006 ps2) are characterized by the single-crystal balanced optical cross-correlator. In our experiment, an ultra-low timing jitter of 48 attoseconds is achieved when the jitter spectral density is integrated from 3 kHz to 1 MHz offset frequency. We think that the obtained timing jitter level is the lowest for fiber lasers mode-locked by real saturable absorbers. This ultra-low timing-jitter, stably mode-locked fiber laser source is expected to be used for high precision applications outside of the laboratory.

Abstract:Timing stabilization of mode-locked femtosecond laser is reported. Timing fluctuations of mode-locked laser come from the change in gain medium, and the change in cavity length via mechanical vibrations and environmental disturbances. To suppress the gain change, a low noise all-solid-state pump source was used. And the cavity optical length was controlled to be stable with a PZT and a motor driven translation stage. The timing jitter was reduced to be 77fs.

Abstract:Higher sensitivity in timing jitter measurement has great importance in studies related to precise measurements. Timing jitter noise floors contribute one of the main parts in existing measurements. In this article, a phase error signal is obtained by superposition of outputs of two optical heterodyne discrimination apparatus to suppress the noise floor. Excess phase noise of the electrical amplifier is avoided. We demonstrate 2.6 x 10(-14) fs(2)/Hz (similar to 160 ys/root Hz) timing jitter noise floor between two identical 99 MHz repetition-rate mode-locked Ti:sapphire lasers after their repetition rates are tightly synchronized. The performance is extensible to reach an integrated timing jitter resolution of one attosecond.

Abstract:We report on a compact and robust self-referenced optical frequency comb with a tunable repetition rate, generated by an all-polarization-maintaining (PM) mode-locked Er-doped fiber laser. The spacing between comb teeth can be tuned above 300 kHz at a repetition rate of 101 MHz. The repetition rate and the carrier–envelope offset of the laser are stabilized separately, and the relative residual phase noises are determined to be $336~\unicode[STIX]{x03BC}\text{rad}$ and 713 mrad (1 Hz–1 MHz). The accurate frequency characteristics and the stable structure show great potential for the use of such a comb in applications of precision measurements.

Abstract:We synchronize a 8.06-GHz microwave signal from a voltage-controlled oscillator with an optical pulse train from a 77.5- MHz mode-locked Er-fiber laser using a fiber-based optical-microwave phase detector. The residual phase noise between the optical pulse train and the synchronized microwave signal is -133 dBc/Hz (-154 dBc/Hz) at 1 Hz (5 kHz) offset frequency, which results in 838 as integrated rms timing jitter [1 Hz - 1 MHz]. The long-term residual phase drift is 847 as (rms) measured over 2 hours, which reaches 4\times10^{-19} fractional frequency instability at 1800 s averaging time. This method has a potential to provide both sub-fs-level short-term phase noise and long-term phase stability in microwave extraction from mode-locked fiber lasers.

Abstract:We report on a long-term stable 50 fs pulse generation directly from a nonlinear amplified loop mirror based fiber oscillator. The laser cavity with all-polarization-maintaining fiber components can generate pulses with 0.16 nJ pulse energy and 50 fs pulse width under 85 MHz repetition rate. The 0-45 degrees C high-low temperature test, together with the 15 h output power test, shows the excellent stability of the few-cycle pulsed laser.

Abstract:A passively mode-locked fiber laser with a 1.03 GHz fundamental repetition rate and a low noise performance is demonstrated. The compact and robust laser operates at a central wavelength of 1553.9 nm with a 3 dB spectral bandwidth of 7.9 nm and a temporal width of 550 fs. All the fibers and components used in the laser are polarization-maintaining (PM), so the output pulses are linearly polarized. The degree of polarization of the optical pulses is measured to be 0.9994. The phase noise of the seventh harmonic (7.21 GHz) is measured and a low timing jitter of 11.7 fs is obtained by integrating the phase noise from 30 MHz down to 100 Hz. The noise performance is analyzed in detail, and the methods for further optimizing the timing jitter are also proposed. So far, we know this to be the first-reported low-noise all-PM erbium-doped fiber laser with a gigahertz level pulse repetition rate.

Abstract:Synchronous laser-microwave networks delivering attosecond timing precision are highly desirable in many advanced applications, such as geodesy, very-long-baseline interferometry, high-precision navigation and multi-telescope arrays. In particular, rapidly expanding photon science facilities like X-ray free-electron lasers and intense laser beamlines require system-wide attosecond-level synchronization of dozens of optical and microwave signals up to kilometer distances. Once equipped with such precision, these facilities will initiate radically new science by shedding light on molecular and atomic processes happening on the attosecond timescale, such as intramolecular charge transfer, Auger processes and their impact on X-ray imaging. Here, we present for the first time a complete synchronous laser-microwave network with attosecond precision, which is achieved through new metrological devices and careful balancing of fiber nonlinearities and fundamental noise contributions. We demonstrate timing stabilization of a 4.7-km fiber network and remote optical-optical synchronization across a 3.5-km fiber link with an overall timing jitter of 580 and 680 attoseconds RMS, respectively, for over 40 hours. Ultimately we realize a complete laser-microwave network with 950-attosecond timing jitter for 18 hours. This work can enable next-generation attosecond photon-science facilities to revolutionize many research fields from structural biology to material science and chemistry to fundamental physics.

Abstract:High-impact frequency comb applications that are critically dependent on precise pulse timing (i.e., repetition rate) have recently emerged and include the synchronization of X-ray free-electron lasers, photonic analogue-to-digital conversion and photonic radar systems. These applications have used attosecond-level timing jitter of free-running mode-locked lasers on a fast time scale within ~100 μs. Maintaining attosecond-level absolute jitter over a significantly longer time scale can dramatically improve many high-precision comb applications. To date, ultrahigh quality-factor (Q) optical resonators have been used to achieve the highest-level repetition-rate stabilization of mode-locked lasers. However, ultrahigh-Q optical-resonator-based methods are often fragile, alignment sensitive and complex, which limits their widespread use. Here we demonstrate a fibre-delay line-based repetition-rate stabilization method that enables the all-fibre photonic generation of optical pulse trains with 980-as (20-fs) absolute r.m.s. timing jitter accumulated over 0.01 s (1 s). This simple approach is based on standard off-the-shelf fibre components and can therefore be readily used in various comb applications that require ultra-stable microwave frequency and attosecond optical timing.

Abstract:We demonstrate a novel and highly stable femtosecond fiber laser at a repetition rate of 840 MHz. Because the laser components are bonded on a silica glass, the repetition rate of the free running laser drifts within 1 kHz over 12 hrs. The timing jitter of the pulses measured by the balanced optical cross-correlation is 130 as for the integration range of 10 kHz to 1 MHz.

Abstract:Controlling femtosecond optical pulses with temporal precision better than one cycle of the carrier field has a profound impact on measuring and manipulating interactions between light and matter. We explore pulses that are carved from a continuous-wave laser via electro-optic modulation and realize the regime of sub-cycle optical control without a mode-locked resonator. Our ultrafast source, with a repetition rate of 10 GHz, is derived from an optical-cavity-stabilized laser and a microwave-cavity-stabilized electronic oscillator. Sub-cycle timing jitter of the pulse train is achieved by coherently linking the laser and oscillator through carrier-envelope phase stabilization enabled by a photonic-chip supercontinuum that spans up to 1.9 octaves across the near infrared. Moreover, the techniques we report are relevant for other ultrafast lasers with repetition rates up to 30 GHz and may allow stable few-cycle pulses to be produced by a wider range of sources.

Abstract:Wavelength tunable and ultra stable pulse generation at 10GHz is experimentally demonstrated using a non-PM, regeneratively mode-locked fiber ring laser. Less than 2.0 ps, nearly transform-limited, sech2-shaped pulses are directly generated with supermode noise suppression ratio over 70dB and RMS timing jitter value less than 162 fs. Dispersion management has been exploited in order to obtain the shortest pulse duration at 1.1ps. The mechanisms for the super-mode noise suppression are also discussed.
