Abstract:We reported the timing jitter reduction of an 882 MHz mode-locked NPE Yb:fiber lasers through active relative intensity noise suppression. The timing jitter spectra measurements based on balanced optical cross-correlation (BOC) technique show a reduction of ~10 dB in the Fourier frequency range from ~3 kHz to ~30 kHz with a unity-gain crossing point of 80 kHz. The results verify the theoretical prediction that the relative intensity noise (RIN) induced timing jitter by self-steepening effect dominates the jitter performance below ~100 kHz. Further comparison with the analytic model shows that the effect of RIN decays below ~3 kHz. Thus, the timing jitter reduction is not obvious at low frequency. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first experimental report on the timing jitter reduction through active RIN suppression in high-repetition-rate mode-locked fiber lasers.

Abstract:We demonstrate a GHz repetition rate mode-locked Tm3+-doped fiber laser with low noise. Based on a home-made Tm3+-doped barium gallo-germanate fiber with reduced dispersion, a broad optical spectrum of mode-locking is achieved, and its amplified spontaneous emission quantum-limited timing jitter is largely suppressed. Besides, we carefully investigate the influence of the intracavity pump strength on the noise performance of the mode-locked pulses and find that manipulating the intracavity pump power can be an effective method for optimizing the timing jitter and relative intensity noise (RIN). Particularly, RIN, which originated from the relaxation oscillation, can be effectively suppressed by 33 dB at offset frequencies of >1 MHz. The integrated timing jitter and RIN are only 7.9 fs (10 kHz-10 MHz) and 0.05% (10 Hz-10 MHz), respectively.

Abstract:We demonstrate sub-femtosecond timing jitter of ultrashort pulses from a dispersion managed Yb-fiber laser mode-locked by a SESAM. Timing jitters of the mode-locked Yb-laser under different dispersion conditions (when the intra-cavity dispersions are −0.005 ps2, +0.001 ps2, +0.006 ps2) are characterized by the single-crystal balanced optical cross-correlator. In our experiment, an ultra-low timing jitter of 48 attoseconds is achieved when the jitter spectral density is integrated from 3 kHz to 1 MHz offset frequency. We think that the obtained timing jitter level is the lowest for fiber lasers mode-locked by real saturable absorbers. This ultra-low timing-jitter, stably mode-locked fiber laser source is expected to be used for high precision applications outside of the laboratory.

Abstract:Higher sensitivity in timing jitter measurement has great importance in studies related to precise measurements. Timing jitter noise floors contribute one of the main parts in existing measurements. In this article, a phase error signal is obtained by superposition of outputs of two optical heterodyne discrimination apparatus to suppress the noise floor. Excess phase noise of the electrical amplifier is avoided. We demonstrate 2.6 x 10(-14) fs(2)/Hz (similar to 160 ys/root Hz) timing jitter noise floor between two identical 99 MHz repetition-rate mode-locked Ti:sapphire lasers after their repetition rates are tightly synchronized. The performance is extensible to reach an integrated timing jitter resolution of one attosecond.

Abstract:Compact, high repetition rate ( ∼ G H z level) femtosecond fiber lasers are attractive for high-precision, high-speed scientific and engineering fields. However, the noise of such a laser seems far higher than low repetition rate ones, which limits its application. Motivated by this challenge, we combined the solid state and the fiber laser into a novel and highly stable “solid-state fiber laser” operating at 840 MHz repetition rate. Benefitting from the robust architecture of “optical cubes,” the laser shows an ultralow timing jitter (130 as) in free-running operation. This is the first time the timing jitter of a high repetition rate fiber laser has been brought to the attosecond level, to the best of our knowledge. This breakthrough makes an impact on the concept that the high repetition rate is associated with high timing jitter in fiber lasers and opens the way for real-world applications of these lasers.

Abstract:Multi-color ultrashort pulses with GHz repetition rates are promising for spectroscopic and four-wave-mixing-based applications that specifically require both fast transient response and fast refresh rate. Among existing technologies for generating multi-color ultrashort pulses, actively synchronizing multiple lasers operating at different wavelengths advances in the technical simplicity, and shows a high coherence. However, for GHz repetition rates, the short cavity design, on one hand, is sensitive to environmental perturbations that change the cavity length (thus the repetition rate); on the other hand, it challenges the active repetition-rate synchronization by adding extra free-space components. In this work, we demonstrate long-term stable synchronization between a Yb-doped GHz-repetition-rate modelocked fiber laser and an Er-doped GHz-repetition-rate modelocked fiber laser. The stable active synchronization is realized by using the phase-locked-loop technology that is implemented for short fiber cavities. The repetition rates of the two short fiber laser cavities can be stably locked with millihertz precision and a timing jitter of about 20 fs.

Abstract:We demonstrated a 100-MHz Er-doped fiber laser mode locked by nonlinear amplifying loop mirror with low timing jitter on the “optical cubes” structure. The laser employed an all polarization-maintaining configuration. To guide the experimental construction, a numerical simulation of the laser was implemented via the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation and Jones matrices. The laser configuration with the optimal output performance was adopted in the experiment. With the contribution of the “optical cubes” structure, the laser exhibited a good repetition frequency $(f_r)$ stability. The root-mean-square (RMS) free-running $f_r$ drift was 106.72 Hz without temperature control over 20 hours. In free-running operation, the short-term overlapping Allan deviation of $f_r$ at 1 s reached the level of $4.47 \times 10^{-10}$ . Furthermore, utilizing the balanced optical cross-correlator method, we measured the timing jitter for the direct output from the laser without amplification and pulse compression. The free-running RMS timing jitter was as low as 99.63 as in the integration range of 10 kHz to 1 MHz. The dominant noise source was analyzed with well-established analytic model.

Abstract:Mode-locked Yb-doped fiber lasers around 1 μm are attractive for high power applications and low noise pulse train generation. Mode-locked fiber lasers working in soliton and stretched-pulse regime outperform others in terms of the laser noise characteristics, mechanical stability and easy maintenance. However, conventional optical fibers always show a normal group velocity dispersion around 1 μm, leading to the inconvenience for necessary dispersion management. Here we show that optical microfibers having a large anomalous dispersion around 1 μm can be integrated into mode-locked Yb-doped fiber lasers with ultralow insertion loss down to −0.06 dB, enabling convenient dispersion management of the laser cavity. Besides, optical microfibers could also be adopted to spectrally broaden and to dechirp the ultrashort pulses outside the laser cavity, giving rise to a pulse duration of about 110 fs. We believe that this demonstration may facilitate all-fiber format high-performance ultrashort pulse generation at 1 μm and may find applications in precision measurements, large-scale facility synchronization and evanescent-field-based optical sensing.

A phase discrimination signal is obtained using an optical heterodyne technique. Abstract:We report an all-normal-dispersion, low-repetition-rate, high-energy, twin-pulse, passively mode locked ytterbium-doped fiber laser. The mode-locking mechanism of the laser is based on nonlinear polarization evolution and strong pulse shaping with a cascade long-period fiber grating bandpass filtering in a highly chirped pulse. The laser generates a highly stable twin-pulse group with 248 ps and 296 ps duration simultaneously and maximum pulse energy of 26.8 nJ-each pulse at a 2.5445 MHz repetition rate. Energy quantization is observed, which demonstrates the nonparabolic nature of these pulses. The laser can also work in third-harmonic mode locking with 17.8 nJ energy (at a repetition rate of 7.65 MHz and pulse width of 780 ps).

Abstract:We demonstrate a self-starting 313 MHz repetition rate, 77 fs Yb: fiber laser incorporated with a phase-biased nonlinear amplifying loop mirror and intra-cavity dispersion compensation. Although all of the fibers are non-polarization-maintaining, the mode locking is environmentally stable.

Abstract:Timing stabilization of mode-locked femtosecond laser is reported. Timing fluctuations of mode-locked laser come from the change in gain medium, and the change in cavity length via mechanical vibrations and environmental disturbances. To suppress the gain change, a low noise all-solid-state pump source was used. And the cavity optical length was controlled to be stable with a PZT and a motor driven translation stage. The timing jitter was reduced to be 77fs.

Abstract:We demonstrate a novel and highly stable femtosecond fiber laser at a repetition rate of 840 MHz. Because the laser components are bonded on a silica glass, the repetition rate of the free running laser drifts within 1 kHz over 12 hrs. The timing jitter of the pulses measured by the balanced optical cross-correlation is 130 as for the integration range of 10 kHz to 1 MHz.

Abstract:We report on an environmentally stable mode-locked all polarization maintaining fiber laser with a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM) at a ultralow repetition rate. Experimentally, using different cavity lengths we have achieved stable mode-locking at different repetition rates. By carefully adjusting the length of the total fiber of NALM, we achieve stable broadband pulse trains with a repetition rate as low as 140 kHz. The pulses can be further amplified up to 27 mu J and compressed down to 1.16 ps. The laser system has potential application for industrial application.
