Abstract:A 1.2 GHz, 106 fs stretched-pulse mode-locked laser was demonstrated, with > 700 mW output power. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest repetition rate from NPE mode locked Yb: fiber lasers.

Abstract:A pulsed laser for laser guide stars with a 100 MHz repetition rate and 1 ns pulse width was achieved by external modulation of a continuous wave (CW) laser with a 70 kHz spectrum width. The laser is amplified first by two fiber pre-amplifiers and then by four solid-state power amplifiers. The laser achieves gains as high as 36 dB in the fiber pre-amplifiers due to the long gain medium length. The output power from the fiber amplifiers is 2.1 W. The laser receives further amplification in the solid-state amplifiers and retains good beam quality by aberration compensation. The final output average power is 102.9 W, and the beam quality factor M-2 is 1.46. The laser reaches high power without spectrum width and pulse width broadening at the 100 MHz repetition rate. The spectrum width of the pulsed laser is less than 0.8 GHz, which is close to the Fourier transform limit. Such a laser with single-frequency, high-repetition, and high-power features along with good beam quality will be valuable for many research areas. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We demonstrated the first 1.2 GHz nonlinear polarization rotation stretched-pulse mode-locked Yb laser with a compact design and innovative components. With a compact Faraday rotation angle has been used in NPR mode-locked lasers, and we find that incomplete isolation of backward light does not hinder self-starting. This laser directly outputs sub-40 fs pulses with a spectral bandwidth exceeding 70 nm, achieving over 1 W of average output power. The laser serves as a seed source, generating a supercontinuum over one octave-spanning range without external amplification or compression.

Abstract:Mode-locked Yb-doped fiber lasers around 1 μm are attractive for high power applications and low noise pulse train generation. Mode-locked fiber lasers working in soliton and stretched-pulse regime outperform others in terms of the laser noise characteristics, mechanical stability and easy maintenance. However, conventional optical fibers always show a normal group velocity dispersion around 1 μm, leading to the inconvenience for necessary dispersion management. Here we show that optical microfibers having a large anomalous dispersion around 1 μm can be integrated into mode-locked Yb-doped fiber lasers with ultralow insertion loss down to −0.06 dB, enabling convenient dispersion management of the laser cavity. Besides, optical microfibers could also be adopted to spectrally broaden and to dechirp the ultrashort pulses outside the laser cavity, giving rise to a pulse duration of about 110 fs. We believe that this demonstration may facilitate all-fiber format high-performance ultrashort pulse generation at 1 μm and may find applications in precision measurements, large-scale facility synchronization and evanescent-field-based optical sensing.

Abstract:We demonstrate the first 1 GHz femtosecond erbium-doped fiber ring laser mode locked by nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE). The laser delivers a maximum average output power of 228 mW, correspondingly to single pulse energy of 0.228 nJ. The pulse spectral bandwidth is 32 nm, and the direct output pulse duration is 81.8 fs without extra-cavity compression. The integrated relative intensity noise (RIN) and the residual root mean square phase noise are measured to be 0.059% and 35 mrad (ranging from 10 Hz to 1 MHz), respectively. The result indicates that the high repetition rate lasers can operate without a significant increase in noise. This laser is an ideal source as a compact and relatively high pulse energy and short pulse at this repetition rate and shows great potential for optical frequency combs and other applications around 1560 nm wavelength.

Abstract:We report on the formation of the nanosecond pulse in an erbium-doped fiber laser mode-locked with a molybdenum diselenide (MoSe2)-deposited microfiber. The evolution of the pulse states from slightly chirped picosecond pulse to highly chirped nanosecond pulse was observed. As the pump power increases to a certain value, the picosecond pulse abruptly transforms into nanosecond pulse with the pulse duration of 70 ns and the maximum pulse energy of 21 nJ at the fundamental repetition rate of 3.54 MHz. With the advantages of high pulse energy, large pulse duration, and low peak power, the nanosecond pulse could be destined for amplification and compression to achieve high-power applications promisingly.

Abstract:We reported a 26 W linearly polarized single-mode Yb-doped photonic crystal fiber amplifier, working at 80 kHz repetition rate with 4.5 ns duration, corresponding 72 kW peak power. Using a acousto-optic Q-switched Nd:YVO4 laser as the seed source, the 26 W average power of 1064 nm laser was obtained at a repetition rate of 80 kHz from a Yb-doped photonic crystal fiber amplifier, with 4.5 ns duration, polarization extinction ratio 11 dB and M 2 < 1.2.

Abstract:Pulse bursts with a controllable number of pulses per burst have been produced directly from a mode-locked Yb-doped fiber laser for the first time. Each output burst contained numerous pulses with a high pulse repetition rate of 29.4 MHz. The duration of a single pulse was 680 ps. The pulse burst had a repetition rate of 251.6 kHz. The pulse burst could easily be further amplified to a total pulse burst energy of similar to 795 nJ, corresponding to a total average power of 200 mW. (c) 2014 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We report on an environmentally stable mode-locked all polarization maintaining fiber laser with a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM) at a ultralow repetition rate. Experimentally, using different cavity lengths we have achieved stable mode-locking at different repetition rates. By carefully adjusting the length of the total fiber of NALM, we achieve stable broadband pulse trains with a repetition rate as low as 140 kHz. The pulses can be further amplified up to 27 mu J and compressed down to 1.16 ps. The laser system has potential application for industrial application.

Abstract:In this paper, we reported an Yb-doped, femtosecond, chirped pulse amplification laser based on strictly all-fiber structure. It operated at a low repetition rate of 1 kHz and adopted the synchronously pumping technology to suppress ASE and heat accumulation. A chirped fiber Bragg grating providing adjustable dispersion is used as the pulse stretcher. High order dispersion induced by fiber, grating pair in the system was compensated accurately. Laser pulse with duration of 180 fs and energy of 112 μJ has been obtained. In addition, it has a high long-term stability of energy and a good beam quality, corresponding to energy fluctuation of 0.62% in an hour and M2 factor of 1.15, respectively.

Abstract:We report a mode-locked fiber laser working at a 1 GHz fundamental repetition rate. The laser delivers a 600 mW average power at a pump power of 1800 mW. The pulse spectrum bandwidth was 23 nm to support 64 fs near-transform-limited pulses. An octave-spanning supercontinuum from 590 to 1350 nm was generated in a tapered photonic crystal fiber solely with the mode-locked fiber-laser output, without amplifiers. A 30 dB f(ceo) beat signal was detected via f-to-2f interferometer.

Abstract:We demonstrate a broadband fiber amplifier system emitting 10nm pulses with 33mJ pulse energy at repetition rates between 1 and 20Hz. In combination with a pulse width of 10ns, a corresponding peak output power over than 3MW was achieved. This record performance was enabled by fiber with core diameter of 200μm. Furthermore, in order to suppress amplified spontaneous emission (ASE), multi-stage pulse pump technology was applied and different pumping characteristics had been measured. Finally, 15% extraction efficiency was obtained when output energy reached 33mJ. Output capability of the amplifier was not limited by SBS and ASE but the pump peak power.
