Abstract:A pulsed laser for laser guide stars with a 100 MHz repetition rate and 1 ns pulse width was achieved by external modulation of a continuous wave (CW) laser with a 70 kHz spectrum width. The laser is amplified first by two fiber pre-amplifiers and then by four solid-state power amplifiers. The laser achieves gains as high as 36 dB in the fiber pre-amplifiers due to the long gain medium length. The output power from the fiber amplifiers is 2.1 W. The laser receives further amplification in the solid-state amplifiers and retains good beam quality by aberration compensation. The final output average power is 102.9 W, and the beam quality factor M-2 is 1.46. The laser reaches high power without spectrum width and pulse width broadening at the 100 MHz repetition rate. The spectrum width of the pulsed laser is less than 0.8 GHz, which is close to the Fourier transform limit. Such a laser with single-frequency, high-repetition, and high-power features along with good beam quality will be valuable for many research areas. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We report an all-normal-dispersion, low-repetition-rate, high-energy, twin-pulse, passively mode locked ytterbium-doped fiber laser. The mode-locking mechanism of the laser is based on nonlinear polarization evolution and strong pulse shaping with a cascade long-period fiber grating bandpass filtering in a highly chirped pulse. The laser generates a highly stable twin-pulse group with 248 ps and 296 ps duration simultaneously and maximum pulse energy of 26.8 nJ-each pulse at a 2.5445 MHz repetition rate. Energy quantization is observed, which demonstrates the nonparabolic nature of these pulses. The laser can also work in third-harmonic mode locking with 17.8 nJ energy (at a repetition rate of 7.65 MHz and pulse width of 780 ps).

Abstract:Mode-locked Yb-doped fiber lasers around 1 μm are attractive for high power applications and low noise pulse train generation. Mode-locked fiber lasers working in soliton and stretched-pulse regime outperform others in terms of the laser noise characteristics, mechanical stability and easy maintenance. However, conventional optical fibers always show a normal group velocity dispersion around 1 μm, leading to the inconvenience for necessary dispersion management. Here we show that optical microfibers having a large anomalous dispersion around 1 μm can be integrated into mode-locked Yb-doped fiber lasers with ultralow insertion loss down to −0.06 dB, enabling convenient dispersion management of the laser cavity. Besides, optical microfibers could also be adopted to spectrally broaden and to dechirp the ultrashort pulses outside the laser cavity, giving rise to a pulse duration of about 110 fs. We believe that this demonstration may facilitate all-fiber format high-performance ultrashort pulse generation at 1 μm and may find applications in precision measurements, large-scale facility synchronization and evanescent-field-based optical sensing.

Abstract:We demonstrate an all-normal-dispersion mode-locked fiber laser based on a piece of large-core Yb-doped multi-mode fiber. High order modes are suppressed by coiling the gain fiber to produce large loss for the high modes but low loss for the fundamental mode. Mode-locking is self-starting by exploiting a combination of a grating-aperture based spectral filter with a nonlinear polarization evolution effect. The laser directly delivers 1.1 ps, 107 nJ pulses at a repetition rate of 76.7 MHz, with an average power of up to 8.2 W. The pulses can be compressed externally to 210 fs with a peak power of up to 350 kW.

Abstract:AbstractA tunable dual- and triple-wavelength passively mode-locked ytterbium-doped fiber laser in the all-normal-dispersion regime is reported and demonstrated. Using a phase-shifted long-period fiber grating as an all-fiber format spectral filter in the laser cavity, a self-starting stabilized multi-wavelength mode-locking operation is achieved by nonlinear polarization evolution. The mode-locked multi-wavelength output can be tuned continuously and smoothly over a spectral range of 10 nm using the phase-shifted long-period fiber grating bandpass filter without re-adjusting any elements in the system. It opens a new possibility to achieve tunable and controllable multi-wavelength mode-locked high-energy laser output in the all-normal-dispersion cavity in an all-fiber format.

Abstract:This paper reports a 100 fs Yb-doped mode-locked fiber laser based on pre-chirp managed nonlinear amplification.The system was first constructed with the mode-locked seed laser by using the nonlinear polarization rotation technology,which could deliver near-linear chirped stable pulse sequence at a repetition rate of 82.3 MHz.After a pre-amplifier and the pre-chirp managed nonlinear amplifier, the average power of the laser output was boosted over 12 W while the pulse width was reduced to less than 100 fs, effectively improved as a comparison to the 180 fs FWHM of the compressed seed pulse.

Abstract:We report on a self-starting mode-locked all-polarization-maintaining fiber laser using a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror. It delivers a 7.81 MHz train of pulses with an average power of 213 mW, corresponding to pulse energy higher than 27 nJ. The output chirped pulses can be recompressed down to ∼114fs with a grating pair compressor. The nonlinear phase shifts accumulated in the long fiber cavity can be used to compensate for the mismatched third order dispersion and increase the compressed pulse quality. The laser shows excellent stability and environmental robustness during the test.

Using a acousto-optic Q-switched Nd:YVO4 laser as the seed source, the 26 W average power of 1064 nm laser was obtained at a repetition rate of 80 kHz from a Yb-doped photonic crystal fiber amplifier, with 4.5 ns duration, polarization extinction ratio 11 dB and M 2 < 1.2.

Abstract:Femtosecond fiber lasers with a high peak power are of great interest due to their various real-world applications. This work uses a double-clad ytterbium-doped fiber (DC-YDF) as the gain medium to successfully generate mode-locked pulses with a high peak power of hundreds of kilowatts at the 1 μm wavelength. The pulse width of the mode-locked pulses was as short as 108 fs, with a fundamental frequency of 1.9 MHz. The highest average power output, energy pulse, and peak power of the mode-locked pulses were 114.5 mW, 58.4 nJ, and 540.7 kW, respectively. The mode-locked fiber laser operates at a center wavelength of 1052 nm with normal net-cavity dispersion, which shows characteristics of a dissipative soliton. The mode-locked pulses exhibit good stability, as demonstrated by the measurement of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 40 dB. It is the very first instance of high-power short pulses mode-locked in the 1 μm range being shown utilizing a DC-YDF with a two-dimensional (2D) material-based saturable absorber (SA) into the laser cavity.

Abstract:A broad Stark splitting of Yb3+-doped fluorophosphate (FP) core glass and phosphate cladding glass with outstanding thermal and mechanical performance were prepared in this work. Yb3+-doped FP core and phosphate cladding heterogeneous fiber with hexagonal-shape inner cladding was fabricated by the stack-and-draw method. A maximum output power of 2W was obtained with slope efficiency of 25.6% from a 35cm fiber. The laser spectrum had a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 1.5nm with the central wavelength at 1013nm. Therefore, FP glass fiber might be a good alternative for gain medium in short-linear-cavity single-frequency fiber laser.

Abstract:We demonstrate an all-polarization-maintaining (PM) ytterbium (Yb)-doped fiber laser with a figure-of-9 structure to generate mode-locked pulses with high single pulse energy and high repetition frequency. By exploiting the nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM), a stably self-started mode-locking is achieved with a spectrum bandwidth of 13 nm and a pulse duration of 4.53 ps. The fundamental frequency is 97.966 MHz at the maximum output power of 143 mW in single pulse mode-locked operation, corresponding to the single pulse energy is 1.46 nJ. The output pulses maintain both high repetition frequency and high single-pulse energy. Moreover, the superior stability of the mode-locked operation was measured in 45 minutes. This laser oscillator can be an ideal seed source for applications such as high-energy amplifiers.

Abstract:We report experimental results on an all-fiberized linearly polarized single-mode pulse Yb-doped fiber laser/amplifier working at 1064 nm. Using a fiberized acousto-optic Q-switched ytterbium fiber laser as the seed source, a double-clad polarization-maintaining fiber as the gain medium, a (6+1)×1 multimode pump combiner to input the seed signal and the pump power, an Yb fiber master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) is demonstrated. It delivers a linearly polarized pulsed laser output working at 1064 nm with an average power of 30 W, a repetition rate of 40 kHz, a pulse duration time about 30 ns, a polarization extinction ratio greater than 10 dB, and a beam quality factor (M2) of 1.36. Our experiments were pump-power limited and considerable scope remains for further power-scaling of such fiber MOPA using this approach.

Abstract:We demonstrate a mode-locked long all-polarization-maintaining fiber laser with a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror. The fiber oscillator directly delivers 221 ps chirped pulses at the repetition rate of 448 kHz. The pulses can be further amplified up to 134 nJ and compressed down to 870 fs by a grating pair.
