Abstract:We demonstrate a low-repetition-rate all-fiber all-normal-dispersion Yb-doped mode-locked fiber laser. Abstract:Mode-locked Yb-doped fiber lasers around 1 μm are attractive for high power applications and low noise pulse train generation. Mode-locked fiber lasers working in soliton and stretched-pulse regime outperform others in terms of the laser noise characteristics, mechanical stability and easy maintenance. However, conventional optical fibers always show a normal group velocity dispersion around 1 μm, leading to the inconvenience for necessary dispersion management. Here we show that optical microfibers having a large anomalous dispersion around 1 μm can be integrated into mode-locked Yb-doped fiber lasers with ultralow insertion loss down to −0.06 dB, enabling convenient dispersion management of the laser cavity. Besides, optical microfibers could also be adopted to spectrally broaden and to dechirp the ultrashort pulses outside the laser cavity, giving rise to a pulse duration of about 110 fs. We believe that this demonstration may facilitate all-fiber format high-performance ultrashort pulse generation at 1 μm and may find applications in precision measurements, large-scale facility synchronization and evanescent-field-based optical sensing.

Abstract:Simulation and experimental results for high repetition rate all-normal dispersion Yb:fiber ring lasers are demonstrated for the cavity dispersion from 0.01 to 0.025 ps 2 .The simulation shows that the pulse spectrum has the potential to reach>30 nm for the dispersion of 0.014 ps 2 under practical pump power. This potential is proved by the experiment.Maximum spectral width of 30 nm is achieved at the repetition rate of 285 MHz under the 850-mW pump power.Average output power is 550 mW and dechirped pulse is 78 fs.

Abstract:We report an all-normal-dispersion, low-repetition-rate, high-energy, twin-pulse, passively mode locked ytterbium-doped fiber laser. The mode-locking mechanism of the laser is based on nonlinear polarization evolution and strong pulse shaping with a cascade long-period fiber grating bandpass filtering in a highly chirped pulse. The laser generates a highly stable twin-pulse group with 248 ps and 296 ps duration simultaneously and maximum pulse energy of 26.8 nJ-each pulse at a 2.5445 MHz repetition rate. Energy quantization is observed, which demonstrates the nonparabolic nature of these pulses. The laser can also work in third-harmonic mode locking with 17.8 nJ energy (at a repetition rate of 7.65 MHz and pulse width of 780 ps).

Abstract:We demonstrate an all-normal-dispersion mode-locked fiber laser based on a piece of large-core Yb-doped multi-mode fiber. High order modes are suppressed by coiling the gain fiber to produce large loss for the high modes but low loss for the fundamental mode. Mode-locking is self-starting by exploiting a combination of a grating-aperture based spectral filter with a nonlinear polarization evolution effect. The laser directly delivers 1.1 ps, 107 nJ pulses at a repetition rate of 76.7 MHz, with an average power of up to 8.2 W. The pulses can be compressed externally to 210 fs with a peak power of up to 350 kW.

Spectral filtering of a chirped pulse in the cavity, along with a semiconductor saturable absorber, produce self-starting femtosecond mode-locked operation with large normal dispersion. Abstract:AbstractA tunable dual- and triple-wavelength passively mode-locked ytterbium-doped fiber laser in the all-normal-dispersion regime is reported and demonstrated. Using a phase-shifted long-period fiber grating as an all-fiber format spectral filter in the laser cavity, a self-starting stabilized multi-wavelength mode-locking operation is achieved by nonlinear polarization evolution. The mode-locked multi-wavelength output can be tuned continuously and smoothly over a spectral range of 10 nm using the phase-shifted long-period fiber grating bandpass filter without re-adjusting any elements in the system. It opens a new possibility to achieve tunable and controllable multi-wavelength mode-locked high-energy laser output in the all-normal-dispersion cavity in an all-fiber format.

Abstract:We report on a self-starting mode-locked all-polarization-maintaining fiber laser using a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror. It delivers a 7.81 MHz train of pulses with an average power of 213 mW, corresponding to pulse energy higher than 27 nJ. The output chirped pulses can be recompressed down to ∼114fs with a grating pair compressor. The nonlinear phase shifts accumulated in the long fiber cavity can be used to compensate for the mismatched third order dispersion and increase the compressed pulse quality. The laser shows excellent stability and environmental robustness during the test.

Abstract:In this paper, we reported an Yb-doped, femtosecond, chirped pulse amplification laser based on strictly all-fiber structure. It operated at a low repetition rate of 1 kHz and adopted the synchronously pumping technology to suppress ASE and heat accumulation. A chirped fiber Bragg grating providing adjustable dispersion is used as the pulse stretcher. High order dispersion induced by fiber, grating pair in the system was compensated accurately. Laser pulse with duration of 180 fs and energy of 112 μJ has been obtained. In addition, it has a high long-term stability of energy and a good beam quality, corresponding to energy fluctuation of 0.62% in an hour and M2 factor of 1.15, respectively.

Abstract:We demonstrate an all-fiber mode-locked laser at all-normal dispersion with a saturable absorber, which is based on a section of grade-index multimode fiber with inner microcavity embedded in the splice points. The absorption modulation depth of this nonlinear saturable absorber is 2.2% in the suitable bent state. The fiber laser operates at central wavelength of 1035nm with average power of ~1.26mW, pulse-duration of 17.05 ps, repetition rate of 37.098MHz. This kind of saturable absorber has superiorities of low cost, high stability and high damage threshold, which may facilitate applications in optical sensing, material processing and light detection.

Abstract:We report on high-energy ultrashort pulse generation from a passively mode-locked ytterbium-doped large-mode-area photonic crystal fiber oscillator operating in the anomalous dispersion regime. In the single-pulse regime, the laser directly generates 880 mW of average power of sub-500 fs pulses at a repetition rate of 53.33 MHz, corresponding to a pulse energy of 16.5 nJ. Stable and self-starting operation is obtained by adapting the spot size at the saturable absorber mirror to the pulse evolution in the low-nonlinearity fiber. The approach presented demonstrates the scaling potential of fiber based short pulse oscillators towards the microJ-level.

Abstract:We demonstrate a self-starting tunable all-normal-dispersion (ANDi) ytterbium (Yb):fiber laser basedon the biased nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM), which generates a stable femtoseconddissipative soliton with an average output power of 154 mW at a pump power of 816 mW. It has adechirped pulse duration of 178 fs, a repetition rate of 88.6 MHz. Taking advantage of theintracavity-birefringence induced spectral filtering effect, its center wavelength tunes from 1029to 1039 nm with a spectral bandwidth of 12 nm. The proposed ANDi femtosecond fiber laser provides ahigh-energy short-pulse laser source with strong stability.

Abstract:A tunable high-order harmonic and passively mode-locked Yb-doped fiber laser with all-normal dispersion is demonstrated. Using the mode-locking mechanism of the nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE) effect and a cascade long period fiber grating (C-LPFG) as an all-fiber format spectral filter for the strong pulse shaping, a maximum of 14th-order harmonic mode-locked (HML) Yb-doped fiber laser can be tunably achieved with a repetition rate of 35.497 MHz compared with the fundamental repetition rate of 2.538 MHz, which is the highest harmonic mode-locked laser with all-normal dispersion so far. At the 14th HML output, the cavity supermodes are suppressed to 23 dB, and the pulses duration is 1.23 ns with a maximum pulse energy of 0.97 nJ.

Abstract:We report on a mode-locked high energy fiber laser operating in the dispersion compensation free regime. The sigma cavity is constructed with a saturable absorber mirror and short-length large-mode-area photonic crystal fiber. The laser generates positively-chirped pulses with an energy of 265 nJ at a repetition rate of 10.18 MHz in a stable and self-starting operation. The pulses are compressible down to 400 fs leading to a peak power of 500 kW. Numerical simulations accurately reflect the experimental results and reveal the mechanisms for self consistent intracavity pulse evolution. With this performance mode-locked fiber lasers can compete with state-of-the-art bulk femtosecond oscillators for the first time and pulse energy scaling beyond the muJ-level appears to be feasible.

Abstract:An all-fiber normal-dispersion mode locked laser is presented. No additional spectral filter components are involved in the cavity. Spectral filtering is achieved through gain narrowing by three segments of gain fibers with different lengths. The performances of the fiber lasers with and without gain narrowing are discussed. A stable mode locked pulse train is observed in the cavity with gain filtering with pulse duration of 72 ps. The gain filtering effect is discussed theoretically.

Abstract:A switchable dual-wavelength and passively mode- locked ytterbium-doped fiber laser (YDFL) in the all-normal-dispersion (ANDi) regime is reported and demonstrated for the first time. Using a phase-shifted long-period fiber grating (PS-LPFG) as an all-fiber format spectral filter in the laser cavity, a stable and switchable dual-wavelength mode-locked operation is achieved by nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE). The maximum output energy of the dual-wavelength pulse is 25.76 nJ at a repetition rate of 2.499 MHz. It opens a new possibility to achieve switchable multiwavelength and mode-locked laser output in the ANDi cavity in an all-fiber format.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate an all-normal-dispersion Yb-doped mode-locked fibre laser with no intentional spectral filter inserted. Pulses with 1.1 nJ pulse energy at a repetition rate of 20.4 MHz are achieved. A theoretical model of the fibre laser is derived, whose coefficients are explicitly dependent on the orientations of the wave plates and the polarizer. Based on the model, stability diagrams of both the mode-locking and the continuous wave regimes of the laser are presented. The influence of group-velocity dispersion (GVD) and cavity length on the stability of mode-locking is also discussed.
