Abstract:We report on a long-term stable 50 fs pulse generation directly from a nonlinear amplified loop mirror based fiber oscillator. The laser cavity with all-polarization-maintaining fiber components can generate pulses with 0.16 nJ pulse energy and 50 fs pulse width under 85 MHz repetition rate. The 0-45 degrees C high-low temperature test, together with the 15 h output power test, shows the excellent stability of the few-cycle pulsed laser.

Abstract:We demonstrate a self-starting erbium fiber oscillator-amplifier system based on the nonlinear polarization rotation mode-locked mechanism. The direct output pulse from the amplifier is 47 fs with an average power of 1.22 W and a repetition rate of 50 MHz, corresponding to a pulse energy of 24 nJ. The full width at half-maximum of the spectrum of the output pulses is approximately 93nm at a central wavelength of 1572nm so that the transform-limited pulse duration is as short as 39 fs. Due to the imperfect dispersion compensation, we compress the pulses to 47 fs in this experiment.

Abstract:High repetition rate fiber lasers have attracted great attention in recent years due to their potential applications including spectroscopy and laser processing. In this manuscript, we have demon-strated sub-30 fs pulses directly from a compact Er-doped fiber laser amplifier system with a high repetition rate of ∼203 MHz. The design of the laser comprises of a home-built oscillator based on nonlinear polarization evolution mode-locking mechanism, an all-fiber amplifier, and a fiber type compressor. By optimizing the length of single mode fiber compressor, the shortest pulse duration of 26 fs is achieved, which is ∼4.9 optical cycle at 1570 nm. The average output power of the de-chirped pulse is 267 mW with corresponding pulse energy of 1.3 nJ. Such a high repetition rate fiber laser with few-cycle pulse holds tremendous potential for numerous applications that require high temporal resolution, and high photon flux.

Abstract:Wavelength tunable and ultra stable pulse generation at 10GHz is experimentally demonstrated using a non-PM, regeneratively mode-locked fiber ring laser. Less than 2.0 ps, nearly transform-limited, sech2-shaped pulses are directly generated with supermode noise suppression ratio over 70dB and RMS timing jitter value less than 162 fs. Dispersion management has been exploited in order to obtain the shortest pulse duration at 1.1ps. The mechanisms for the super-mode noise suppression are also discussed.

Abstract:We report on environmentally stable long-cavity ultrashort erbium-doped fiber lasers, which self-start mode-locking at quite low thresholds by using spectrally filtered and phase-biased nonlinear amplifying long-loop mirrors. By employing 100-m polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF) in the nonlinear loop, the fundamental repetition rate reaches 1.84 MHz and no practical limitation is found to further decrease the repetition rate. The filter used in the long loop not only suppresses Kelly sidebands of the solitons, but also eliminates the amplified spontaneous emission which exists widely in low-repetition-rate ultrafast fiber lasers. The bandwidth of the filter is optimized by using a numerical model. The laser emits approximately 3-ps pulses with an energy of 17.4 pJ, which is further boosted to $1.5~\unicode[STIX]{x03BC}\text{J}$ by using a fiber amplifier.

Abstract:A long-term stable picosecond dissipative soliton (DS) is achieved for the first time using nonlinear polarization evolution. The environmental stabilization is performed by a Faraday mirror, which can cancel environmentally induced changes in the birefringence of the fiber. The laser cavity with all-polarization-maintaining fiber components generates DS pulses with 2.9 nJ single pulse energy and 5.9 ps pulse width. The output power test over 2 hours shows the excellent mode-locking stability of this design.

Abstract:We demonstrated a compact broad spectrum ultrashort fiber laser system that employed a similariton laser as a seed and fiber-optic nonlinearities in an erbium-doped fiber amplifier to broaden the optical spectrum. The system generated a stable 59 fs ultrashort pulse with a spectral bandwidth beyond 550 nm (i.e. 1490-2030 nm). The mode-locked oscillator produced an 85.9 fs similariton pulse at the wavelength of 1553 nm. The maximum average output power of the laser system was 251 mW. This new type of standard single-mode fiber-format energetic ultrashort system was suitable as a source for biological tissue imaging, broad-band spectroscopy, and optical frequency combs.

Abstract:We report on frequency doubling of 1.55-mu m fiber oscillator-amplifier laser with conversion efficiency of 27% by using off-the-shelf nonlinear crystal. The system generates 135-femto-second (fs) pulses with average power of 110 mW at 80 MHz repetition rate. Frequency doubling efficiency as a function of pulse pre-chirp in front of a single mode erbium fiber amplifier was investigated.

Abstract:We demonstrated the first 1.2 GHz nonlinear polarization rotation stretched-pulse mode-locked Yb laser with a compact design and innovative components. With a compact Faraday rotation angle has been used in NPR mode-locked lasers, and we find that incomplete isolation of backward light does not hinder self-starting. This laser directly outputs sub-40 fs pulses with a spectral bandwidth exceeding 70 nm, achieving over 1 W of average output power. The laser serves as a seed source, generating a supercontinuum over one octave-spanning range without external amplification or compression.

Abstract:We demonstrate an environmentally stable femtosecond laser for industrial application based on all polarization‐maintaining Yb‐doped laser and experimentally explore the effect of the net cavity dispersion (NCD) on output characteristics. The oscillator emits pulses with 5.1 ps and a 23 nm spectral bandwidth, then the pulse is compressed to 88 fs. The instabilities over 120 h gives 0.32% relative root mean square noise, indicating high stability of the pulse laser. With effective regulation of NCD, we obtained the maximum spectral bandwidth of 27 nm. Such broadband oscillator with compact all‐fiber configurations provide extremely high stability should be very attractive for long‐term industrial application.

Abstract:A stable nanosecond chirp-free pulse generation with ultra-narrow bandwidth is established from a passively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser with a homemade fiber Bragg grating as the intra-cavity filter and careful intra-cavity dispersion management introduced. The laser generates nearly chirp-free pulse that is close to the Fourier transform-limited condition. The measured pulsewidth is 2 ns and the spectral width is only 192 MHz. The measured time jitter is below 1%. The pulse repetition rate is 982 kHz, which reveals there are only 195 oscillating longitudinal modes. This is the longest duration of single stable chirp-free pulse in passively continuous-wave mode-locked fiber lasers to our best knowledge.

Abstract:We demonstrate the first 1 GHz femtosecond erbium-doped fiber ring laser mode locked by nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE). The laser delivers a maximum average output power of 228 mW, correspondingly to single pulse energy of 0.228 nJ. The pulse spectral bandwidth is 32 nm, and the direct output pulse duration is 81.8 fs without extra-cavity compression. The integrated relative intensity noise (RIN) and the residual root mean square phase noise are measured to be 0.059% and 35 mrad (ranging from 10 Hz to 1 MHz), respectively. The result indicates that the high repetition rate lasers can operate without a significant increase in noise. This laser is an ideal source as a compact and relatively high pulse energy and short pulse at this repetition rate and shows great potential for optical frequency combs and other applications around 1560 nm wavelength.

Abstract:We demonstrate the sub-100 fs pulse generation from a dispersion-managed mode-locked Er:ZBLAN fiber laser at 2.8 μm. Both numerical simulation and experiment demonstrate that stretched-pulse and dissipative soliton mode lockings coexist in the near-zero-dispersion region of a fluoride fiber laser. With fine dispersion management, the shortest pulse of 95 fs was obtained from the stretched-pulse mode-locked Er:ZBLAN fiber laser, with an average power of 280 mW and repetition rate of 52 MHz. To the best of our knowledge, this is the shortest pulse to date directly generated from a mid-infrared mode-locked fluoride fiber laser.

Abstract:An all-fiber low-repetition-rate SESAM mode-locked fiber oscillator combined with a dispersion-managed active fiber loop produces a flexible GHz burst-mode laser source. The high-power output is then produced by amplifying the GHz burst-mode laser source using an all-fiber chirped-pulse amplification system. Then, the laser is compressed using a grating pair compressor; a maximum amplified power of 97 W is obtained. This results in a compressed high power of 82.07 W with a power stability RMS of 0.09% and beam quality better than 1.2. Accurate dispersion control allows for the production of a high-quality pulse duration of 265 fs.

Abstract:We report on an environmentally stable mode-locked all polarization maintaining fiber laser with a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM) at a ultralow repetition rate. Experimentally, using different cavity lengths we have achieved stable mode-locking at different repetition rates. By carefully adjusting the length of the total fiber of NALM, we achieve stable broadband pulse trains with a repetition rate as low as 140 kHz. The pulses can be further amplified up to 27 mu J and compressed down to 1.16 ps. The laser system has potential application for industrial application.

Abstract:A passively mode-locked fiber laser with a 1.03 GHz fundamental repetition rate and a low noise performance is demonstrated. The compact and robust laser operates at a central wavelength of 1553.9 nm with a 3 dB spectral bandwidth of 7.9 nm and a temporal width of 550 fs. All the fibers and components used in the laser are polarization-maintaining (PM), so the output pulses are linearly polarized. The degree of polarization of the optical pulses is measured to be 0.9994. The phase noise of the seventh harmonic (7.21 GHz) is measured and a low timing jitter of 11.7 fs is obtained by integrating the phase noise from 30 MHz down to 100 Hz. The noise performance is analyzed in detail, and the methods for further optimizing the timing jitter are also proposed. So far, we know this to be the first-reported low-noise all-PM erbium-doped fiber laser with a gigahertz level pulse repetition rate.
