Abstract:Period multiplication is a bifurcation phenomenon, which depicts a typical roadmap from periodic steady-state to chaos. There has been particular interest in studying period multiplication properties in mode-locked lasers, but the mechanism behind is still not well-studied. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a figure-of-9 fiber laser which can generate period-multiplied pulses with long-term stability. Further theoretical insight is obtained by numerical simulations, which clearly shows that the ratio between the distances of each bifurcation point is approaching the Feigenbaum constant. We believe that the laser design presented here could be a stable and reliable ultrafast optical platform to study bifurcation and chaos, which also has potential applications in optical frequency comb and all-optical modulation.

Abstract:We report on a long-term stable 50 fs pulse generation directly from a nonlinear amplified loop mirror based fiber oscillator. The laser cavity with all-polarization-maintaining fiber components can generate pulses with 0.16 nJ pulse energy and 50 fs pulse width under 85 MHz repetition rate. The 0-45 degrees C high-low temperature test, together with the 15 h output power test, shows the excellent stability of the few-cycle pulsed laser.

Abstract:A highly stable figure-9 Yb-doped fiber laser with all polarization-maintaining (PM) double-cladding fiber is demonstrated. Through leveraging the saturable absorption effect of a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror, both the Q-switched and mode-locked operation are realized by adjusting the pump power. With increasing the pump power from the threshold to the maxima, the repetition rate of the Q-switched pulses is linearly increased from 14.9 kHz to 138.0 kHz with the pulse duration accordingly reduced from 3.9 µs to 970 ns. The corresponding maximum average power and pulse energy are respectively 2.34 W and 17 µJ, which are more than ten times larger than the common material-based Q-switched all-fiber lasers. In addition, in the process of increasing and decreasing the pump power, an optical bistability that manifested as a significant power jumping effect is observed, while its effect on the pulse repetition rate and duration is trivial. Whereas for the single pulse mode-locked operation, a maximum output power of 56.3 mW with a fundamental repetition rate of 12.5 MHz is realized, corresponding to a pulse energy of 4.5 nJ. To the best of our knowledge, it is much higher than the most of previous works concerning figure-9 all-PM-fiber lasers of which the emitted pulse energy is generally less than 1 nJ. After being compressed by a pair of diffraction grating, a minimum pulse width of 378 fs and a maximum peak power of 9.76 kW are respectively obtained. In addition, through characterizing the spectral and temporal properties of the laser source, the excellent stability of both the Q-switched and mode-locked operations is verified.

Abstract:A long-term stable picosecond dissipative soliton (DS) is achieved for the first time using nonlinear polarization evolution. The environmental stabilization is performed by a Faraday mirror, which can cancel environmentally induced changes in the birefringence of the fiber. The laser cavity with all-polarization-maintaining fiber components generates DS pulses with 2.9 nJ single pulse energy and 5.9 ps pulse width. The output power test over 2 hours shows the excellent mode-locking stability of this design.

Abstract:A high-power single-frequency 1178 nm continuous-wave laser is generated in a two-stage stimulated-Brillouin-scattering-suppressed all-polarization-maintaining Raman fiber amplifier pumped by 1120 nm fiber lasers. A polarization-extinction-ratio of 30 dB is achieved due to the all-polarization-maintaining configuration and the polarization dependence gain of Raman scattering. Single-pass frequency doubling with a homemade periodically poled near-stoichiometric LiT alpha O-3 crystal (PPSLT) produces an up to 7 W narrow-linewidth laser at 589 nm. The thermally induced dephasing effect is found to be the key issue for improving second-harmonic efficiency. (C) 2013 Optical Society of America

Abstract:In this study, we demonstrated a few-cycle pulse generation system delivering an 8-fs and 13-nJ pulse. The oscillator of this system is a mode-locked fiber laser based on a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM), which is injected into the gain management nonlinear (GMN) amplifier after pre-chirp management by a chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG) and a passive fiber. Subsequently, a hollow-core photonic bandgap (HC-PBG) fiber is employed to compensate for the dispersion, achieving a pulse duration of 49.8 fs with a pulse energy of 51.8 nJ. Finally, we integrate an ultra-high numerical aperture (UHNA) fiber at the end of the HC-PBG fiber for nonlinear spectral broadening. The resulting spectral range spans from 800 to 1400 nm. Dispersion compensation is achieved using the prism-pair, resulting in a further compression of the pulse duration to 8.2 fs, with a pulse energy of 13.1 nJ and a peak power of 1.59 MW. With an overall system footprint of <0.1 m 2 and a total volume of <0.005 m 3 , this few-cycle pulse generation system delivers ultra-short pulses with high peak power while maintaining compactness and stability, making it attractive for many applications.

Abstract:An all-normal dispersion tunable mode-locked fiber laser with a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror is experimentally investigated. The laser employs an all-polarization-maintaining figure-8 cavity consisted of main loop and nonlinear amplifying loop mirror. At 1030 nm, the stable mode-locked laser is initiated by adjusting two loops' pump power, which delivers pulse width of 17.61 ps, repetition frequency of 4.133 MHz, and average power of 2.151 mW. A tunable filter is employed in the cavity to select the laser wavelength as well as force the laser operating in all-normal dispersion dissipative regime. The wavelength tuning range is 1015-1080 nm while the pulse duration ranges from 7.86 ps to 17.80 ps.

Abstract:We demonstrate a mode-locked long all-polarization-maintaining fiber laser with a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror. The fiber oscillator directly delivers 221 ps chirped pulses at the repetition rate of 448 kHz. The pulses can be further amplified up to 134 nJ and compressed down to 870 fs by a grating pair. Abstract:We report on a self-starting mode-locked all-polarization-maintaining fiber laser using a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror. It delivers a 7.81 MHz train of pulses with an average power of 213 mW, corresponding to pulse energy higher than 27 nJ. The output chirped pulses can be recompressed down to ∼114fs with a grating pair compressor. The nonlinear phase shifts accumulated in the long fiber cavity can be used to compensate for the mismatched third order dispersion and increase the compressed pulse quality. The laser shows excellent stability and environmental robustness during the test.

Abstract:We demonstrated an ultrafast Yb-doped fiber laser with a single mode fiber-graded index multimode fiber-single mode fiber (SMF-GIMF-SMF) structure based saturable absorber. The GIMF was placed in the groove of an in-line fiber polarization controller to adjust its birefringence, enabling the SMF-GIMF-SMF structure to realize efficient saturable absorption based on nonlinear multimode interference without strict length restriction. By adjusting two intra-cavity polarization controllers, stable dissipation solitons and noise-like pulses were achieved in the 1030 nm waveband with pulse durations of 10.67 ps and 276 fs, respectively. We also realized Q-switched mode-locked pulses in the same fiber laser cavity. By the dispersive Fourier transform method, the real-time spectral evolution in the buildup process of the Q-switched mode-locked state was captured, which showed that the continuous-wave in this laser could gradually evolved into the stable Q-switched mode-locked pulses through unstable self-pulsation, relaxation oscillation and rogue Q-switching stage. To the best of our knowledge, our work reveals the buildup dynamics of the Q-switched mode-locked operation in a fiber laser for the first time. And we also studied the real-time spectral evolution of the stable Q-switched mode-locked pulses, which exhibited periodic breathing property.

Abstract:We report on environmentally stable long-cavity ultrashort erbium-doped fiber lasers, which self-start mode-locking at quite low thresholds by using spectrally filtered and phase-biased nonlinear amplifying long-loop mirrors. By employing 100-m polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF) in the nonlinear loop, the fundamental repetition rate reaches 1.84 MHz and no practical limitation is found to further decrease the repetition rate. The filter used in the long loop not only suppresses Kelly sidebands of the solitons, but also eliminates the amplified spontaneous emission which exists widely in low-repetition-rate ultrafast fiber lasers. The bandwidth of the filter is optimized by using a numerical model. The laser emits approximately 3-ps pulses with an energy of 17.4 pJ, which is further boosted to $1.5~\unicode[STIX]{x03BC}\text{J}$ by using a fiber amplifier.

Abstract:<p>Multiple pulse generation in a single cavity attracts increasing attention from scientists and engineers. It could greatly simplify the laser system for applications requiring multiple pulses. Here, with a polarization-rotation loop mirror and a Faraday mirror at the ends of the isolator-free linear fiber cavity, the polarization states of the beams could be switched in each trip across the cavity, and pulses with different state of polarization may circulate in the loop mirror in different directions. Thus, two pulses with orthogonal polarization states could exist and propagate in the cavity separately. Pumped at 13 mW, polarization-multiplexed picosecond pulse outputs centered at 1564.40 nm and 1564.42 nm could be experimentally observed from the 2*2 output coupler, respectively. By examining the RF spectrum at both the fundamental and 100-times repetition rate and the temporal pulse trains, it is determined that the polarization-multiplexed pulses have the exact same repetition rate, which is attributed to the completely common propagation path and compensated polarization mode dispersion due to the end mirrors. Such polarization-multiplexed, synchronous ultrashort pulse generation from a linear-cavity fiber laser provides a simple laser configuration and method to generate stable synchronous pulses.</p>

Abstract:In this study, we have investigated the evolution process and dynamic characteristics of a multi-pulse regime in an erbium-doped fiber ring laser based on a single-mode fiber–graded-index multimode fiber–single-mode fiber (SMF-GIMF-SMF) structure as an optical modulator. By utilizing the excellent nonlinear optical absorption of the SMF-GIMF-SMF (SMS) device with a modulation depth of ~8.68%, stable single-pulse mode locking at the frequency of 9.84 MHz can be readily observed at low pump power. In addition, the single-pulse operation can evolve into a multiple-pulse regime on account of the peak-power-clamping effect via suitably raising the pump power and carefully regulating the polarization state. Further, the single-shot temporal evolution of multiple pulses is monitored, indicating that this state shows unique and interesting temporal characteristics with variable pulse separations and inconsistent pulse intensities, which, as far as we know, is the first such observation in ultrafast fiber lasers. Additionally, this study, based on the time-stretch dispersive Fourier transformation method, suggests that these multiple pulses consist of chaotic wave envelopes with erratic intensities and changeable pulse energy. We believe that these findings have profound implications for revealing fascinating nonlinear pulse dynamics in ultrafast fiber optics.

Abstract:We report on an environmentally stable mode-locked all polarization maintaining fiber laser with a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM) at a ultralow repetition rate. Experimentally, using different cavity lengths we have achieved stable mode-locking at different repetition rates. By carefully adjusting the length of the total fiber of NALM, we achieve stable broadband pulse trains with a repetition rate as low as 140 kHz. The pulses can be further amplified up to 27 mu J and compressed down to 1.16 ps. The laser system has potential application for industrial application.

Abstract:We report an all-polarization-maintaining Yb-doped fibre (YDF) femtosecond (fs) laser source at ∼1 μm comprising a figure-8 mode-locked oscillator and two YDF amplifier stages. By employing a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror, we could achieve dissipative soliton mode-locking with an output of 24.6 mW at a repetition rate of 6.2 MHz. In our experiments, a Raman signal of 16% in the pulse energy helps to obtain stable mode-locked operation in the figure-8 oscillator. The dissipative soliton pulse from the oscillator is stretched by a chirped fibre Bragg grating and is amplified by a two-stage YDF amplifier. After compression, the YDF master-oscillator power-amplifier system yields fs pulses with a pulse energy of 2.3 μJ and a pulse duration of 274.6 fs at a repetition rate of 0.52 MHz. The output pulse energy is limited by the third-order nonlinearity of the fibre amplifier chain. Prospects for further pulse energy scaling are discussed.

Abstract:We report on the experimental observation of period-doubling bifurcation of dissipative-soliton-resonance (DSR) pulses in a fiber laser passively mode-locked by using the nonlinear optical loop mirror. Increasing the pump power of the fiber laser, we show that temporally a stable, uniform DSR pulse train could be transformed into a period-doubling state, exhibiting two sets of pulse parameters between the adjacent cavity roundtrip. It is found that DSR pulses in the period-doubling state could maintain the typical feature of DSR pulse: fixed pulse peak power and linear variation in pulse width with respect to the pump power change. The mechanism for achieving period-doubling of DSR pulses is discussed.
