Abstract:Thin ZK60 magnesium alloy sheets with ultrafine-grain structure were successfully fabricated by continuous cold rolling with proper intermediate annealing treatments at 503–523K for 30min. Meanwhile, microstructure uniformity and planar texture anisotropy were strikingly improved by rolling deformation and static recrystallization, resulting in continuous improvement in the strength anisotropy. Excellent ductility more than 30% in fracture elongation was achieved after further annealing treatment at a lower temperature of 473K. This was primarily attributed to the significant weakening of the {0002} pole intensity and grain refinement during the process. It is shown that mechanical properties of the final sheets could be closely controlled by the present process.

Abstract:In this work, we introduce a microstructure with high-density nano solute clusters by rolling at 100 °C to efficiently fabricate a high-strength ZK60 alloy plate. High yield strength of 336 MPa is achieved. The rolling process at 100 °C facilitates the formation of high-density dislocations and nano substructures, which causes the formation of high-density nano Zn solute clusters. The high strength is mainly attributed to the formation of high-density nano solute clusters, dislocations, and nano substructures. The finding of nano clusters shed light on designing high-strength Mg alloys, and the applied conventional rolling can be readily implemented in industrial production.

Abstract:To explore the proper rolling parameters for industrial sheet fabrication, hot-extruded ZK61 magnesium alloy sheets with 2 mm thickness were fabricated by multi-pass hot rolling at gradually decreasing temperature with 20, 30 and 40% thickness reduction ratios. As the rolling proceeded, the extent of grain size refinement as well as microstructure uniformity was improved continuously via multiple dynamic recrystallization. The rolling deformation resulted in the formation of a strong (0002) basal texture accompanied by the increasing of (0002) pole intensity along TD but the decreasing of that along RD. Tensile tests at room temperature revealed that the enhancements of mechanical properties and its isotropy in RD–TD plane were attributed to both grain refinement and texture variation. The relations between microstructure and mechanical properties were discussed in detail on the basis of experiment in this article. Weighted by the microstructure and mechanical properties, the optimum rolling process was determined as the multi-pass hot rolling with 30% thickness reduction ratio for as-extruded ZK61. Under this condition, a uniform structure with a grain size of about 7.3 μm was obtained, and a comprehensive mechanical performance was achieved with yield strength of 194.1 MPa, ultimate tensile strength of 301.3 MPa and total elongation of 23%.

Abstract:Ultra high-strength Mg-8.2Gd-3.8Y-1.0Zn-0.4Zr alloy sheet was prepared by large-strain hot rolling and subsequent ageing process. The sheet exhibits excellent tensile properties at ambient temperature with ultimate tensile strength of 517 MPa, 0.2% proof stress of 426 MPa and elongation to failure of 4.5%. The notable improvement in strength is attributed to the dense distribution of the fine precipitates inside the grains, scattered precipitates at the grain boundaries, bimodal grain size distribution with fine recrystallized grains and large deformed grains with intense basal texture. Abstract:Obtaining ultra-high strength in commercial ZK60 wrought alloys is rather difficult by conventional processes due to their limited precipitation hardening. In this work, we proposed a novel strategy to enhance the strength of ZK60 alloy by constructing a high density of multi-scale particles in the matrix. As expected, the ultra-high tensile strength, such as ultimate tensile strength of 436 MPa and yield strength of 400 MPa, is achieved in the co-addition of minor Ca and Er in ZK60 extrusion alloys, outperforming most of Mg-Zn-based alloys reported previously. The co-addition of Ca and Er induces more multi-scale particles, including submicron-broken particles and fine dynamic precipitates formed in the matrix during extrusion. Note that fine precipitates at sub-grain boundaries stabilize their misorientations due to the pinning role and thus retard the dynamic recrystallization process, which intensifies the deformation texture of the bimodal structures. Solute segregation of Ca and Zn to grain boundaries was also observed, which favors refining recrystallized grains by solute drag effect. Compared to ZK60 alloy, the enhanced tensile strength in co-modified ZK60 alloy with Ca and Er is mainly attributed to the Orowan strengthening of multiscale particles. These results are expected to provide an important reference for fabricating high-strength Mg-Zn-based alloys.

Abstract:The microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg-6.63wt.%Zn-0.56wt.% Zr (ZK61) Mg alloy sheets processed by temperature-step-down multi-pass rolling were investigated. A uniform fine-grained structure with the average grain size of about 3.5 mu m, which is enriched with rod-shaped beta'(1)(MgZn2) and blocky beta'(1)(Mg2Zn3) precipitates, is attained by multiple dynamical recrystallization. An intense {0002} basal texture with a-axis randomly rotated in the plane is developed. As a consequence, a yield strength of 219 MPa, an ultimate tensile strength of 313 MPa, and a fracture elongation larger than 32% can be obtained. This enhancement in strength during rolling is mainly due to grain refinement and basal texture strengthening in the early stage, and is further contributed by precipitation hardening, simultaneously. Ductility improvement is attributed to the enhanced uniform elongation correlated with twinning suppression, and the enhanced post-necking elongation controlled by grain refinement, especially at the fine grain sizes. This can provide an essential reference for designing high-performance wrought Mg alloy sheets suitable for industrial fabrication. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The as-cast ZK60 Mg alloy ingot with mean grain size of 278 μm after solution treatment was subjected to severe plastic deformation by multi-pass hot rolling with decreasing temperatures. The process facilitated steady grain refinement by dynamic recrystallization with increasing rolling deformation, and the final grain size was reduced to 7.2 μm by 6 rolling passes. Tensile experiments demonstrated that the yield and ultimate strength of the finished plates were isotropic, with the former being about 202 MPa and the latter 307 MPa in both the rolling and the transverse direction, respectively. Electron backscattering diffraction revealed that the finished plates presented homogeneous microstructure and texture pattern, which well explains the observed strength isotropy. Furthermore, it is shown that the as-rolled finished plates don't need the conventional long-time T5 aging treatment, and this can simplify the process flow and help to improve the efficiency for industrial production.

Abstract:Thin ZK61 magnesium alloy sheets with ultrafine–grain structure were fabricated by cumulative cold rolling with intermediate annealing treatments. Microstructure refinement and uniformity were manifestly achieved by multiple static recrystallization during the process while planar texture anisotropy was strikingly improved as {0002} basal pole intensity in transverse direction gradually enhanced and that in rolling direction weakened. The dispersed precipitates mainly composed of blocky β1′ (Mg2Zn3 or Mg4Zn7) and globular β equilibrium phases slightly aggregated and coarsened as the process continuing. The two aforementioned factors of grain refinement and texture variation resulted in a contrary tendency in yield strength with grain size between rolling direction and transverse direction in coarse grain region but an identical increment afterwards under stable basal texture, which was well estimated following the Hall–Petch relationship with texture effect. Fracture elongation over 25% was obtained due to the enhancement of basal texture weakening to uniform elongation following εu≈78.8mbas. and that of grain refining to post–uniform elongation accounting for 40%.

Abstract:An ultra-high strength and high ductility Mg-8.2Gd-3.8Y-1.0Zn-0.4Zr Mg alloy sheet was fabricated by vertical direct chill casting, extrusion, hot rolling and peak-ageing treatment. The peak-aged sheet shows tensile yield strength of 416MPa, ultimate tensile strength of 505MPa and superior elongation to failure of 12.8% at ambient temperature. The remarkable improvement of strength is ascribed to the fine β′ phase precipitated within the grains, grains with strong basal texture and the dispersed long period stacking ordered (LPSO) phases located at the grain boundaries.

Abstract:The yield strength of the extruded Mg−9.9Y−3.7Zn (wt%) alloy at room temperature is remarkably increased from 240MPa to 364MPa using low-stain rolling. This significant improvement is ascribed to the combination of intensive basal texture, fine long-period stacking ordered phase particles and a high density of dislocations. The elongation of the rolled alloy increases as the strain of rolling increases, which is attributed to the homogenous distribution of fine long-period stacking ordered phases.

Abstract:Thin Mg—6.63wt.%Zn—0.56wt.%Zr (ZK61) magnesium alloy sheets with fine-grain structure were successfully fabricated by extrusion and multi–pass rolling with lowered temperature from 653K to 523K. Relationships between grain size, texture and mechanical properties of as–rolled ZK61 magnesium alloy were investigated. Microstructure homogeneity as well as planar texture anisotropy was strikingly improved by hot rolling deformation via multiple dynamic recrystallization. A uniform fine–grained structure of 6.1μm in average grain size and a {0002} basal texture were obtained. These led to better strength isotropy in the plane, and high yield strengths of ∼200MPa, which was related to pyramidal () slip. Enhanced ductility more than 20% in fracture elongation was composed of uniform elongation strongly correlated with basal texture, especially along TD, and post–necking elongation enhanced by grain refinement.

Abstract:Asymmetric lowered-temperature rolling was applied to the fabrication of fine-grained ZK60 magnesium alloy sheet with weak basal texture along the rolling direction (RD). The results showed that multi-pass lowered-temperature rolling could significantly improve the microstructure homogeneity and refine the grain size. Meanwhile, a fiber texture along the transverse direction (TD) gradually developed during rolling process. Importantly, the shear deformation along the RD made the c-axis of basal plane rotate to the RD, weakening the basal texture along this direction. Influenced by such microstructure variation, the yield strength along the TD continuously increased due to the successive grain refinement and the increased activation of prismatic slips, whereas the uniform elongation decreased owing to the decline of strain hardening ability. In contrast, the continuous weakening of basal texture along the RD increased the activation of soft basal slips, greatly offsetting the strengthening effect contributed by grain refinement and thereby causing the slight decrease of yield strength.
Plastic Deformation Mechanism of High Strength and Toughness ZK61 Magnesium Alloy Plate by Multipass Horizontal Continuous Rolling

Abstract:ZK61 magnesium-alloy plate with high tensile strength and elongation is obtained by combined multipass symmetric hot rolling and asymmetric warm rolling. Deformation history considering varying strain rate obtained from the macro-finite element analysis of the selected passes are introduced into the viscoplastic self-consistent model (VPSC) as initial boundary conditions for macro- multiscale and micro-multiscale coupling analysis. VPSC simulation results show that in the initial stage of rolling deformation, the basal <a> slip is the dominated deformation mode, supplemented by prismatic <a> slip and pyramidal <c+a> slip. With increased rolling strain, the pyramidal <c+a> slip presents competitive relationship with basal <a> slip, and the activation amount of {101-1} compression twins is limited. During asymmetric rolling, the basal <a> slip is dominant, followed by the pyramidal <c+a> slip. Experimental results show that the basal texture is gradually strengthened after symmetric rolling, and grain size is refined due to the activation and recrystallization of twins. Asymmetric rolling makes the basal texture deflect 10° to the rolling direction and further refine the grain size. With the ongoing of symmetric rolling, the mechanical anisotropy of the plate weakens, and the yield strength, tensile strength, and plasticity of the material improves. In particular, after asymmetric rolling, the tensile strength in the RD and TD directions of the plate reaches 391.2 MPa and 398.9 MPa, whereas the elongation reaches 19.8% and 25.5%.

Abstract:Achieving high strength-ductility synergy is a great challenge in low-alloyed Mg alloys. In this work, a new Mg–1.0Zn–0.45Ca–0.35Sn–0.2Mn (wt.%, ZXTM1000) alloy was designed and fabricated by sub-rapid solidification (SRS) to overcome the dilemma. After hot rolling and annealing, the new alloy sheet exhibited an excellent tensile yield strength (YS, ∼270 MPa) and elongation (∼21%). Microstructure characterization revealed that the high YS was mainly attributed to the fine grains (∼3 μm) and high density of spherical Ca2Mg6Zn3, Mg2Ca, and α-Mn precipitates. Moreover, the homogeneous grain size distribution, weakened TD-split texture and the activation of multiple types of slips contributed to the enhanced ductility. The findings demonstrate an effective way to fabricate low-alloyed Mg alloys with high strength and ductility by combining the SRS and hot rolling.

Abstract:Metals can be strengthened by many methods, but theses strategies always result in limited ductilities. A simultaneous enhancement of strength and ductility in metals is still a great challenge. In the present study, a multimodal grain structure composed of coarse grains (similar to 24%), ultrafine grains (similar to 56%), and nanoscale grains or subgrains (similar to 20%) has been introduced in hcp pure Zr by employing cryorolling in the temperature range from -160 to -90 degrees C combined with subsequent low-temperature annealing. The multimodal structured Zr exhibits a high ultimate tensile strength (similar to 658 MPa) and a large uniform elongation (similar to 8.5%) simultaneously. The high strength results from the contribution of nanoscale and ultrafine grains, while the improved ductility is mainly derived from the improved strain hardening capability by the coarse grains that are effective in storing dislocations and complex deformation strain paths caused by the multimodal distribution of grain sizes. Abstract:The microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg‐8Al‐1Sm‐1Zn alloy prepared by multi‐pass conventional rolling and single‐pass liner rolling were investigated in this paper. The alloy was subjected to multi‐pass conventional rolling with a cumulative deformation of 60% and single‐pass liner rolling with a deformation of 60% after solution‐treated (T4 temper) at 400 °C, respectively. The results showed that the best mechanical properties were obtained by single‐pass liner rolling at 400 °C with a deformation of 60% deformation under the combined effect of grain refinement and precipitation strengthening. The average grain size of the alloy is 7.2 μm, the microhardness is 80 HV, The tensile yield strength, ultimate tensile strength and elongation at room temperature are 255Mpa, 285MPa and 12.7%, which are 14.9%, 15.3%, and 10.4% higher than those of the conventional multi‐pass rolled alloy, respectively. Abstract:In the present study, novel high performance Mg-Al-Sn-Zn-Y (ATZ821-xY) alloys are developed via hard-plate rolling (HPR). With the addition of Y, the heterogeneous grain structure of the HPRed ATZ821 alloy evolves to be more uniform, accompanying with significant weakening in basal texture. This is due to the faster dynamic recrystallization (DRX) induced by the particle stimulated nucleation (PSN) effect from the Al2Y particles, pinning effect from well-dispersed submicron-sized precipitates including Mg17Al12 and Mg2Sn, and the <c+a> slips activated by Y atoms in α-Mg. Correspondingly, the HPRed ATZ821-1.0Y alloy shows a good combination of strength and ductility, i.e., a yield strength (YS) of ∽248 MPa, an ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of ∽385 MPa and a uniform elongation (UE) of ∽20 %. The high yield strength is mainly due to grain boundary strengthening, which accounts for ∽70% of the total yield strength. The high uniform elongation is mainly attributed to the strong work hardening associated with weakened basal texture, well-dispersed Mg17Al12 and Mg2Sn precipitates, as well as enhanced <c+a> slips induced by Y atoms in the solid solution.</c+a></c+a>This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:The microstructures and properties of ZK60 alloy were evaluated under four different conditions: extrusion; extrusion and 4 passes of equal channel angular pressing (ECAP); extrusion, 4 passes of ECAP and secondary extrusion; and extrusion, 4 passes of ECAP, annealing and secondary extrusion. Secondary extrusion at ambient temperature was successfully processed to produce ultrafine-grained ZK60 alloy. The results show that ECAP introduces significant grain refinement and there is additional refinement in secondary extrusion. High yield strength of 342 MPa is achieved after secondary extrusion at room temperature, but the elongation to failure is only 0.8%. However, by applying annealing before secondary extrusion, the ductility of ZK60 could be greatly improved to 4.5%, meanwhile the yield strength almost remains the same, and the ultimate strength of up to 388 MPa is obtained.
