Abstract:In this work, we present a novel method to sinter tungsten bulk material under high pressure without any additives. The sintering temperatures were greatly reduced in our experiments. The sintered samples can achieve near-full densification (relative density of 99.5%), and have fracture toughness of about 50% higher than that from the traditional methods, without sacrificing hardness. Moreover, the grain sizes of the sintered samples maintained in the initio range. The sintering kinetics, microstructure evolutions, and relationships of mechanical properties versus pressure–temperature conditions were also discussed.

Abstract:A B S T R A C T Refractory tungsten (W) is notoriously brittle at room temperature, which restricts its workability and narrows the temperature range of critical applications. Here, we report a multi-scale microstructure modulation strategy to achieve an excellent combination of low-temperature ductility and high strength in bulk pure W. Through fast two-step low temperature sintering of the activated W powders and highenergy-rate forging treatments, unique hierarchical microstructures were constructed in pure W, including lamellar elongated matrix grains, with profuse interior fine sub-grains, and high density of mobile edge and mixed dislocations. At room temperature, the hierarchical structured bulk W exhibits a detectable tensile ductility and an ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 1.35 GPa. The high strength can be maintained at elevated temperatures, i.e., UTS > 1.0 GPa at 200 degrees C; it also has a remarkable tensile ductility of 15.3% at this temperature. These properties are significantly better than those reported in bulk pure W and W alloys with second phase particles. The shielding and blunting effects from low-angle grain boundaries and highly mobile dislocations, and the lamellar structure reaped delamination toughening effect are the main mechanisms for the improved low-temperature ductility and strength. This study demonstrates a practical route to achieve attractive low-temperature strength-ductility synergy in bulk W without involving any alloying elements, and it is a feasible and low-cost pathway to design high performance refractory metals and alloys.(c) 2022 Acta Materialia Inc. Abstract:Despite being strong with many outstanding physical properties,tungsten is inherently brittle at room temperature,restricting its structural and functional applications at small scales.Here,a facile strategy has been adopted,to introduce high-density dislocations while reducing grain boundaries,through elec-tron backscatter diffraction (EBSD)-guided microfabrication of cold-drawn bulk tungsten wires.The de-signed tungsten microwire attains an ultralarge uniform tensile elongation of ～10.6％,while retains a high yield strength of ～2.4 GPa.in situ TEM tensile testing reveals that the large uniform elongation of tung-sten microwires originates from the motion of pre-existing high-density dislocations,while the subse-quent ductile fracture is attributed to crack-tip plasticity and the inhibition of grain boundary cracking.This work demonstrates the application potential of tungsten microcomponents with superior ductility and workability for micro/nanoscale mechanical,electronic,and energy systems.

Abstract:The reduction of strength and ductility due to structural relaxation induced by high-temperature annealing has greatly limited the application of tungsten-based alloys in structural functional applications. In this study, W-25(wt%)Re (WRE) alloy, which exhibits significant yielding behavior and tensile strength above 1.4 GPa at room temperature(RT), was successfully prepared by a combination of wet-chemical and rotary swaging process. After annealing at 1000 degrees C, WRE has an ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 1253 MPa and total elongation (TE) of 9.8 % at 200 degrees C. Furthermore, following annealing at 1400 degrees C, WRE exhibits a UTS of 897 MPa at 500 degrees C, thereby demonstrating excellent resistance to annealing embrittlement and high-temperature strength. Microstructural analysis reveals that WRE retains a substantial number of fine subgrains and a considerable proportion of low-angle grain boundaries (LAGBs) following high-temperature annealing. The structural stability of WRE enables it to exhibit excellent high-temperature mechanical properties.

Abstract:Conventional material processing approaches often achieve strengthening of materials at the cost of reduced ductility. Here, we show that high-pressure and high-temperature (HPHT) treatment can help overcome the strength-ductility trade-off in structural materials. We report an initially strong-yet-brittle eutectic high entropy alloy simultaneously doubling its strength to 1150 MPa and its tensile ductility to 36% after the HPHT treatment. Such strength-ductility synergy is attributed to the HPHT-induced formation of a hierarchically patterned microstructure with coherent interfaces, which promotes multiple deformation mechanisms, including dislocations, stacking faults, microbands and deformation twins, at multiple length scales. More importantly, the HPHT-induced microstructure helps relieve stress concentration at the interfaces, thereby arresting interfacial cracking commonly observed in traditional eutectic high entropy alloys. These findings suggest a new direction of research in employing HPHT techniques to help develop next generation structural materials.
Tailoring Strength and Ductility of a Cr-Containing High Carbon Steel by Cold-Working and Annealing

Abstract:SEM, TEM characterizations, in combination with tensile tests, provided an intriguing observation that ultra-high-strength and good ductility could be achieved simultaneously by changing the ratio of large and small precipitates in high-carbon steel (1.0C-1.5Cr-0.31Mn-0.20Si, wt %). The high yield strength of 670 MPa, tensile-stress of 740 MPa, and good ductility (elongation of 26%) were obtained by adopting spheroidization annealing, cold rolling, recrystallization annealing, and cold drawing. This led to nanosized precipitates with a large ratio of big size to the small size of 0.28, promoting high dislocation storage of 1.39 × 1014 m-2. In addition, the finite element (FE) method was used to simulate the cold-rolling process, and the largest stress and strain were 830 MPa and 0.6 at a depth of 3 mm after the fourth pass of the 0.10C-1.50Cr steel, respectively. The stress and strain accumulation in the top layer was potentially caused by severe plastic deformation, as well as attrition rendered by the rollers. This explained the emergence of dense low-angle grain boundaries in the region close to the surface of the cold rolled steel.
The Fabrication of Ultrahigh-Strength Steel with a Nanolath Structure via Quenching-Partitioning-Tempering

Abstract:A novel low-alloy ultrahigh-strength steel featuring excellent mechanical properties and comprising a nanolath structure was fabricated in this work using a quenching-partitioning-tempering (Q-P-T) process. The Q-P-T process comprised direct quenching and an isothermal bainitic transformation for partitioning after thermo-mechanical control processing (online Q&P) and offline tempering (reheating and tempering). The ultrafine nanolath martensite/bainite mixed structure, combined with residual austenite in the form of a thin film between the nanolaths, was formed, thereby conferring excellent mechanical properties to the steel structures. After the Q-P-T process, the yield and tensile strengths of the steels reached 1450 MPa and 1726 MPa, respectively. Furthermore, the Brinell hardness and elongation rate were 543 HB and 11.5%, respectively, with an average impact energy of 20 J at room temperature.

Abstract:A developed tungsten (W) grade was prepared by powder metallurgy technology plus multi-step low-temperature rolling. The relative density, thermal conductivity, microstructure, tensile properties of original and high-temperature annealed states, micro-hardness and transient thermal shock resistance were characterized. The results of tensile test with a strain rate of 2 × 10 -4 s -1 show that the ductile-brittle transition temperature (DBTT) of rolled-W in the original and recrystallized state are 150 - 200 °C and 250 - 300 °C, respectively. The rolled-W presents high strength and great plasticity simultaneously. For example, the maximum ultimate tensile strength (UTS) below DBTT is as high as ∼1189 MPa, and the maximum total elongation (TE) above DBTT reaches 28.9%. In particular, the TE of recrystallized W achieves an incredible 81.4% at 500 °C, which is the highest value among all the published literatures so far. The results of transient thermal shock tests indicate that the rolled-W has an outstanding transient thermal shock resistance. It can withstand the thermal bombardment at an absorbed power densities (APD) of 0.33 GW·m -2 without causing any surface damages, and still no cracks are observed as the APD rises to 0.88 GW·m -2 . Moreover, the failure mechanism of rolled-W was also studied in details. This work plays an important role in establishing a dependable China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor (CFETR) data-library on a unitary W grade, which can provide an effective reference for the identification of material performance under the high heat flux and subsequent numerical simulation.

Abstract:We present an ultra-high tensile strength of 1.86 GPa with an elongation of 11 % achieved in a Fe–22Mn–8Al-0.8C austenitic lightweight steels in this study. A partial recrystallized microstructure and κ carbides were obtained in the investigated steels by utilizing a simple thermomechanical processing. Interestingly, the existence of κ carbides not only increased the tensile strength of the investigated specimens but a dramatical increasement of ductility (from 4 % increase to 11 % in this work) was also achieved. The formation of intragranular κ carbides in the matrix can reduce the incompatibility within the material, which can further enhance tensile strength while providing good elongations.

Abstract:A minor Ti-doped (Fe40Mn40Co10Cr10)96.7C3.3 high-entropy alloy presents a higher yield strength and a littler lower elongation than the un-doped one at room temperature. And more interestingly, superior cryogenic temperature (77 K) tensile properties: yield strength of ~1 GPa, ultimate tensile strength of ~1.5 GPa, and elongation of ~52% are achieved in this alloy. The high yield strength is attributed to the improved strengthening effect by the grain boundary and nano-sized TiC precipitation and the better ductility at cryogenic temperature is ascribed to the recovery of deformation twinning by titanium addition. It is proposed that the critical twinning stress of C-contained alloy is temperature dependent, which is related with the unbalanced pinning effect assisted twinning mechanism due to carbon diffusion.
Achieving High Strength-Ductility Synergy in TiBw/near Α-Ti Composites by Ultrafine Grains and Nanosilicides Via Low-Temperature Severe Plastic Deformation

Abstract:The common problem of low strength-ductility matching prevails in near-α high-temperature titanium matrix composites (TMCs). In this work, the design strategy of ultrafine grains and dispersed (Ti, Zr)6Si3 nanoprecipitates in the microstructure of TiBw/near α-Ti composites via low-temperature isothermal multidirectional forging (IMDF), is expected to break the trade-off dilemma between strength and ductility. The results show that with the decrease in the temperature of IMDF, the grain scale decreased from 0.98 μm to 0.59 μm, and the location of silicide precipitation shifted from phase boundaries and grain boundaries to α-grain boundaries and intracrystalline regions. The experiments confirm that the local segregation of Si and the temperature of thermomechanical deformation are the key factors affecting the precipitation behavior of silicides. With the decrease of the deformation temperature, the precipitation mechanism of silicides changes from a single diffusion-controlled precipitation to the coupling of two mechanisms, namely, elemental diffusion and dislocation-assisted nucleation, which facilitates the successive precipitation of nanometer-sized silicides at the grain boundaries and in the inner regions. The ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation of the composites were substantially increased after IMDF at 950 and 800°C, especially the excellent performance at 800°C, where the strength reached 1320.3 MPa and the elongation was 5.8%. The room and high-temperature strengthening and failure mechanisms of the composites are analyzed and discussed, and the yield strength (YS) increments provided by various strengthening mechanisms at room temperature are quantified, aiming to provide a potential preparation strategy for the synergistic strengthening of near-α TMCs with ultrafine grains and nanoparticles.

Abstract:An as-cast Ti37V15Nb22Hf23W3 refractory high entropy alloy (RHEA) with outstanding tensile properties designed by the natural mixing method and solid solution strengthening theoretical model is reported. The current as-cast RHEA presents a random solid solution with a body-centered cubic (BCC) crystal structure and inherits the natural-mixing characteristics. Interestingly, When compared to the W-free Ti38V15Nb23Hf24 RHEA, minor addition of 3 at. % W atoms increases the yield strength by 26.6% to 980 − 19 + 17 MPa while preserving 19.8 − 0.5 + 0.5 % tensile ductility at room temperature. Toward a better understanding of high yield strength, a solid solution model is proposed to explain strong strengthening, and the experimental value is in good agreement with the theoretical one, indicating the significant solid solution strengthening effect in strengthening the RHEAs. The widespread planar dislocation glide favors the production of complicated dislocation structures (e.g., jogs, dipoles, and loops) as well as dense dislocation networks, which can further obstruct dislocation motion meanwhile effectively relieving stress concentration. The dislocation tangles, loops, dipoles, and jogs together with their interactions postpone the local deformation, results in the excellent ductility.

Abstract:Microstructural characterisation and room temperature tensile testing were performed on a series of tungsten heavy alloys extruded at various temperatures. Ultimate tensile strength of the alloys increased with increasing extrusion ratio and with decreasing extrusion temperature down to 600°C. Fracture surface observations indicated that the tensile strength correlated with the tungsten cleavage failure mode. The matrix could inhibit the propagation of cracks initiated in the tungsten particles.MST/3384

Abstract:A high-strength, ultrafine-grained Al alloy with a lamellar structure was fabricated via cryomilling and consolidation (hot isostatic pressing), followed by a two-stage thermomechanical processing approach (e.g. high temperature rotary swaging and room temperature high strain rate extrusion). Each lamellar band consisted of multiple ultrafine grains connected by low misorientation angle grain boundaries. This structure allows the dislocations to glide through low misorientation angle grain boundaries and to accumulate within the band, providing a high uniform elongation while retaining high strength. Abstract:Lack of plasticity is the main drawback for nearly all ultrafine-grained (UFG) materials, which restricts their practical applications. Bulk UFG Cu–Al alloys have been fabricated by using equal channel angular pressing technique. Its ductility was improved to exceed the criteria for structural utility while maintaining a high strength by designing the microstructure via alloying. Factors resulting in the simultaneously enhanced strength and ductility of UFG Cu–Al alloys are the formation of deformation twins and their extensive intersections facilitating accumulation of dislocations.

Abstract:This study demonstrates the crucial trade-off between strength and ductility in titanium alloys. High strength-ductility synergy is achieved through severe plastic deformation (SPD) at a relatively lower temperature, resulting in ultrafine grains and well-dispersed (Ti, Zr)6Si3 nano-precipitates. The samples SPD-processed at 800 °C demonstrate excellent room-temperature properties with a tensile strength of 1558.9 MPa and 7.2 % ductility. The findings highlight the impact of SPD temperature and alloying elements on silicide precipitation, revealing two different precipitation mechanisms depending on the SPD processing temperature: single diffusion-controlled nucleation at a higher SPD temperature while a coupled diffusion and dislocation-assisted nucleation at a lower SPD temperature. Lower-temperature SPD is critical to achieving superior strength-ductility synergy.

Abstract:In the present study, grain refinement of Fe–Si–Mn–Nb–B steel was achieved by high reduction hot rolling. Through the following ultra-fast cooling (UFC) and relaxation process, martensite-ferrite complexes with soft phase embedded in the hard phase were prepared. Extremely tiny ferrite grains significantly increased the toughness of the test steel, a large number of big-angle grain boundaries existing in fine martensite lath bundles effectively improved the strength and the strain hardening ability of the investigated material. The test steel with a relaxation time of 6 s shows the best comprehensive performance with a tensile strength of 1473 MPa, an elongation of 15.0%, a low yield ratio of 0.72 and a product of strength and elongation (PSE) of 22.10 GPa%.
