Abstract:In this work, the influence of double extrusion and partial substituted yttrium (Y) (2 wt. %) on the yield tension-compression (T-C) asymmetry of Mg-2.5Sn (wt. %) alloy was investigated and the possible activated deformation patterns was quantitatively predicted via visco-plastic self-consistent (VPSC) simulation. It can be found that the double extrusion process refined the grains of the Mg-2.5Sn alloy. Partial substitution of Sn by Y, introducing abundant Sn3Y5 particles which had fine crystallographic misorientation with α-Mg, further refined the grains (average size of 8.8 μm) and weakened the texture. Compared with single-extruded Mg-2.5Sn alloy (compression yield stress/tensile yield stress, CYS/TYS=0.44), the T-C asymmetry of the single-extruded Mg-0.5Sn-2Y alloy was improved (CYS/TYS=0.75). Interestingly, compared with the above alloys, the double-extruded Mg-0.5Sn-2Y alloy exhibited yield T-C symmetry (CYS/TYS=1.01). The simulated results based on the VPSC model indicated that the refined grain size led to the decreased activation of tension twinning and increased activation of slip, which was the direct reasons of the improved of CYS/TYS in the double extrusion Mg-2.5Sn alloy and the single extrusion Mg-0.5Sn-2Y alloy. The more activated pyramidal
