Abstract:The unique electronic and mechanical properties, of graphene make it an ideal material for nanoelectromechanical system (NEMS) applications. Here, a miniature optical fiber current sensor based on a quasistatic graphene NEMS with a graphene membrane covering the hole on a pre-etched fiber tip and two gold electrodes on opposite sides of the tip has been demonstrated. The sensor overcomes the shortcomings of conventional optical fiber current sensors based on thermal effects, such as relatively low sensitivity, long response time, and huge device size; it has simultaneously a high sensitivity of 2.2 x 10(5) nm/A(2), a short response time of similar to 0.25 s and a compact device size of similar to 15 mu m, and has found practical application. Using a smaller graphene membrane with better quality can reduce the response time to submillisecond levels with a more precise measurement system. The sensor presented in this paper may pave the way for the practical usage of optical fiber current sensors based on thermal effects.

Abstract:We demonstrate a new fiber-optic current sensor based on graphene nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) with a graphene membrane covering the hole on a fiber tip and two gold electrodes on opposite sides of the tip. The suspended graphene membrane will deform due to thermal effect when electrical current flows through it. Then the strain in the graphene nanomechanical resonator will change and it leads to the shift of resonant frequency. The proposed sensor is compact and shows a sensitivity as high as ~ 262.5 kHz/mA 2 . It can also be used for magnetic field sensors based on Lorentz force.

Abstract:A graphene-based electrical current sensor is proposed utilizing a microfiber coil resonator. Monolayer graphene sheet with a large sheet resistance is transferred onto the surface of a glass capillary rod. A microfiber is spirally wrapped around the graphene sheet to form a coil resonator. Heat generated from electrical current shifts the resonant wavelength because of the thermal effect in the microfiber resonator. The sensor exhibits a very good performance with a high sensitivity of 67.297 mu m/A(2), which is two orders of magnitude higher than that reported earlier. Our results show that microfiber-graphene-integrated devices have great potential for miniature and highly sensitive fiber sensors for monitoring electrical current. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract:We present and numerically characterize a photonic crystal fiber (PCF)-based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor. By adjusting the air hole sizes of the PCF, the effective refractive index (RI) of core-guided mode can be tuned effectively and the sensor exhibits strong birefringence. Alternate holes coated with graphene-Ag bimetallic layers in the second layer are used as analyte channels, which can avoid adjacent interference and improve the signal to noise ratio (SNR). The graphene’s good features can not only solve the problem of silver oxidation but also increase the absorption of molecules. We theoretically analyze the influence of the air hole sizes of the PCF and the thicknesses of graphene layer and Ag layer on the performance of the designed sensor using wavelength and amplitude interrogations. The wavelength sensitivity we obtained is as high as 2520 nm/RIU with the resolution of 3.97 × 10−5 RIU, which can provide a reference for developing a high-sensitivity, real-time, fast-response, and distributed SPR sensor.

Abstract:Flexible strain sensors play an important role in electronic skins, wearable medical devices, and advanced robots. Herein, a highly sensitive and fast response optical strain sensor with two evanescently coupled optical micro/nanofibers (MNFs) embedded in a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film is proposed. The strain sensor exhibits a gauge factor as high as 64.5 for strain ≤ 0.5% and a strain resolution of 0.0012% which corresponds to elongation of 120 nm on a 1 cm long device. As a proof-of-concept, highly sensitive fingertip pulse measurement is realized. The properties of fast temporal frequency response up to 30 kHz and a pressure sensitivity of 102 kPa −1 enable the sensor for sound detection. Such versatile sensor could be of great use in physiological signal monitoring, voice recognition and micro-displacement detection.

Abstract:Recently, some fiber sensing applications by coating graphene oxide or reduce graphene oxide have been proposed. In this paper, a novel humidity sensor based on core-offset fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer coated graphene oxide film has been carried out. Here, we use the chemical method to deal with the surface of the fiber first, and then coated graphene oxide on the surface of the optical fiber sensing arm. The sensitivity of 0.104dB/%RH with a linear correlation coefficient of 99.61% and good stability under the relative humidity range of 30%-60% was obtained.

Abstract:A high sensitivity surface plasmon resonance (SPR) fiber sensor with graphene coated silver nano-columns on the surface of the D-type single mode fiber has been proposed and simulated in this paper. The sensor uses evanescent wave on the surface of the fiber to excite free electrons on the metal surface to generate surface plasmon waves (SPW), and the change of refractive index (RI) is measured by monitoring the variation of the resonance absorption peak. The COMSOL Multiphysics software is used to optimize the diameter of sliver nano-column, the width of air gap between sliver columns, and to study the effect of graphene sensing layer thickness on sensor sensitivity. The simulation results show that the sensitivity of the sensor can be greatly improved with graphene coated sliver nano-columns. The maximum external RI response sensitivity of the sensor proposed in this paper can reach 8860.93 nm/RIU in the RI range of 1.33–1.39 when the diameter of silver nano-column is 90 nm, the graphene is 23 layers and the width of air gap between columns is 53.82 nm. When the RI is 1.39, the sensitivity of the sensor with 23 layers of graphene can be increased by 28% compared with the sensor without the graphene layer. The simulation results will be helpful for design and fabrication of optical fiber SPR refractive index sensor.

Abstract:We integrated a resonant graphene membrane with the conventional fiber sensing system and experimentally demonstrated a fiber magnetic sensor based on the Lorentz force. The sensor has a very compact device size of 14.9 μm and a sensitivity of 110 kHz/T. This unique device configuration may pave the way for other applications of graphene nanoelectromechanical systems.

Abstract:A microfiber biconically tapered from a standard optical fiber shows obvious sinusoidal oscillatory transmission spectrum due to the multimode interference, with evident blue-shifted peak wavelength when applying an axial force. Based on this force-induced spectral shift, here we experimentally demonstrate compact microfiber strain and force sensors with low optical power and high sensitivity. With a 1.5-μW probing light, measured sensitivity of a 2.5-μm-diameter microfiber for the strain and elongation sensing are 4.84pm/με and 404pm/μm respectively, with a force detection limit down to 50μN.

Abstract:A Fabry–Pérot acoustic sensor based on a graphene oxide membrane was developed with the aim to achieve a faster and simpler fabrication procedure when compared to similar graphene-based acoustic sensors. In addition, the proposed sensor was fabricated using methods that reduce chemical hazards and environmental impacts. The developed sensor, with an optical cavity of around 246 μm, showed a constant reflected signal amplitude of 6.8 ± 0.1 dB for 100 nm wavelength range. The sensor attained a wideband operation range between 20 and 100 kHz, with a maximum signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 32.7 dB at 25 kHz. The stability and sensitivity to temperatures up to 90 °C was also studied. Moreover, the proposed sensor offers the possibility to be applied as a wideband microphone or to be applied in more complex systems for structural analysis or imaging.

Abstract:Optical fiber temperature sensors have been widely employed in enormous areas ranging from electric power industry, medical treatment, ocean dynamics to aerospace. Recently, graphene optical fiber temperature sensors attract tremendous attention for their merits of simple structure and direct power detecting ability. However, these sensors based on transfer techniques still have limitations in the relatively low sensitivity or distortion of the transmission characteristics, due to the unsuitable Fermi level of graphene and the destruction of fiber structure, respectively. Here, we propose a tunable and highly sensitive temperature sensor based on graphene photonic crystal fiber (Gr-PCF) with the non-destructive integration of graphene into the holes of PCF. This hybrid structure promises the intact fiber structure and transmission mode, which efficiently enhances the temperature detection ability of graphene. From our simulation, we find that the temperature sensitivity can be electrically tuned over four orders of magnitude and achieve up to ∼ 3.34 × 10−3 dB/(cm⋅°C) when the graphene Fermi level is ∼ 35 meV higher than half the incident photon energy. Additionally, this sensitivity can be further improved by ∼ 10 times through optimizing the PCF structure (such as the fiber hole diameter) to enhance the light–matter interaction. Our results provide a new way for the design of the highly sensitive temperature sensors and broaden applications in all-fiber optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Graphene, a novel form of the hexagonal honeycomb two-dimensional carbon-based structural material with a zero-band gap and ultra-high specific surface area, has unique optoelectronic capabilities, promising a suitable basis for its application in the field of optical fiber sensing. Graphene optical fiber sensing has also been a hotspot in cross-research in biology, materials, medicine, and micro-nano devices in recent years, owing to prospective benefits, such as high sensitivity, small size, and strong anti-electromagnetic interference capability and so on. Here, the progress of optical fiber biochemical sensors based on graphene is reviewed. The fabrication of graphene materials and the sensing mechanism of the graphene-based optical fiber sensor are described. The typical research works of graphene-based optical fiber biochemical sensor, such as long-period fiber grating, Bragg fiber grating, no-core fiber and photonic crystal fiber are introduced, respectively. Finally, prospects for graphene-based optical fiber biochemical sensing technology will also be covered, which will provide an important reference for the development of graphene-based optical fiber biochemical sensors.

Abstract:Because of its outstanding mechanical and electronic properties and unique transfer flexibility, graphene is ideal for miniature all-in-fiber nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) in ultrasensitive sensing applications; however, its application in magnetic detection is limited because of the lack of magnetic-optic response. Here, we demonstrate a high spatial resolution fiber-optic magnetic field sensor based on Lorentz force in a pseudo–magnetic-response quasi-static graphene NEMS. The ultra-compact design of this all-fiber-based sensor is achieved by integrating a hybrid gold-graphene membrane and two gold electrodes onto the hollow endface of a single-mode fiber. An electrical current flowing through the suspended membrane in a perpendicular magnetic field can generate Lorentz force to cause a nanoscale deformation of the membrane. The sensor has a much higher spatial resolution, which is nanometer-scale longitudinally, compared with conventional optical fiber magnetic sensors.
A High-Sensitivity Current Sensor Utilizing CrNi Wire and Microfiber Coils.

Abstract:We obtain an extremely high current sensitivity by wrapping a section of microfiber on a thin-diameter chromium-nickel wire. Our detected current sensitivity is as high as 220.65 nm/A2 for a structure length of only 35 μm. Such sensitivity is two orders of magnitude higher than the counterparts reported in the literature. Analysis shows that a higher resistivity or/and a thinner diameter of the metal wire may produce higher sensitivity. The effects of varying the structure parameters on sensitivity are discussed. The presented structure has potential for low-current sensing or highly electrically-tunable filtering applications.

Abstract:A heterodyne optical fiber current sensor based on a nanowire-grid (NWG) in-line polarizer is proposed. The NWG is a one-dimension Au grating fabricated on a fiber tip by focused ion beam machining. Because the grating pitch is far smaller than the wavelength of the incident light, it works like an in-line transflective fiber polarizer with both the transmission and reflection light power being measured simultaneously. Based on this unique feature, an all-fiber optical current sensor is demonstrated. The heterodyne measurement makes it withstand light power variations showing good sensing stability. As an all-fiber sensor, discrete and bulky optical components are saved, making it more reliable in practical applications.

Abstract:Abstract The high flexibility, impermeability and strength of graphene membranes are key properties that can enable the next generation of nanomechanical sensors. However, for capacitive pressure sensors, the sensitivity offered by a single suspended graphene membrane is too small to compete with commercial sensors. Here, we realize highly sensitive capacitive pressure sensors consisting of arrays of nearly ten thousand small, freestanding double-layer graphene membranes. We fabricate large arrays of small-diameter membranes using a procedure that maintains the superior material and mechanical properties of graphene, even after high-temperature annealing. These sensors are readout using a low-cost battery-powered circuit board, with a responsivity of up to $$47.8$$ 47.8 aF Pa −1 mm −2 , thereby outperforming the commercial sensors.

Abstract:A fiber-optic current sensor implementing the differential measurement to measure currents up to tens of megaamperes is proposed. The sensor is based on a reflective interferometer with a sensing coil made up of two spliced highly birefringent spun fibers with different sensitivities and wound in opposite directions around the current conductor. Mode coupling occurring at the splice has been shown to disturb the output signal, requiring modifications to the signal processing. The 50 MA range sensor has been experimentally demonstrated.
